General Manager’s Message
Hello to everyone in Heritage Hunt and a Happy Mother’s
day wish to all of you moms out there. I love Mother’s Day
as it is a day to celebrate our mothers, hear from the kids,
no matter how busy their lives are and, according to my
wife, marks the beginning of the planting season in our
geographic region. Probably the biggest day of the year for
Lowe’s and Home Depot, but be guaranteed that I’ll be there.
Now for the news and comments close to home in Heritage
Hunt. First and foremost, let me extend kudos to the future
Resident’s Sub Committee for an outstanding Open House in
April. I understand that there was quite a crowd and when
the dust settled on the day, at least five homes had been
moved out of active listings and there were at least three
contracts generated as a result of the outside visitor traffic.
These are incredible numbers and important to keeping up
the viability of Heritage Hunt in the local marketplace.
Pool season will begin Memorial Day weekend. Please make
sure that you have your current ID cards and that you are
familiar with Policy Resolution 10 which discusses the Pool
Rules and Regulations. You can easily find it by searching
for resolution on the website www.HeritageHunt.net and
introduce yourselves to our new pool contractor staff with
American Pools.
Now that the ground temperatures have warmed, our golf
course is greening up beautifully. Many of you have had
the chance to meet Shaun Fronk, the Director of Operations
for Golf and Food & Beverage with Up To Par, so now let’s
welcome Carey Bailey, who has recently joined the UTP team
as Golf Course Maintenance Superintendent. Carey has an
extensive background in Golf Course Maintenance and has
already surfaced many “need” areas and incorporated new
methods of course fertilization and maintenance.
One additional method recently incorporated is establishing
a “Feather Free Zone,” particularly geese control, on the golf
course and our common area ponds. Feather Free Zone has
been working with us for a month and I believe you should
see a significant reduction in our resident and visiting geese
population. The goal is to make our ponds a “less welcoming
or desirable habitat” for the geese and have them leave
Heritage Hunt to settle at different surroundings.
There are a lot of exciting excursions coming up, so please
see the schedule in this month’s Horn or online. The rest of
2016 schedule is posted and if the current trend continues
each excursion will sell out soon. Don’t miss out on your
chance to enjoy a fun outing at a great price and without the
headaches of driving and finding an affordable parking spot.
Lastly, let me remind you of our town hall on May 3 at 7 PM
in the Ballroom. There will be a presentation and discussion
of the preliminary proposals for the Fitness Center and
Clubhouse Food & Beverage Expansion which have been
under study by the Fitness Center/Lounge Task Force for
several months now. Some of you have attended one of the
Task Force’s meetings, but now is the chance to see and
hear the discussions about the recommendations along with
voicing your questions and comments.
May you enjoy the remaining days of Spring and for those
that have served our country a special thank you. Have a
great Memorial weekend!

Board Briefs
All those April showers have produced a real turnout
of May flowers here in Heritage Hunt. We compliment
the Grounds Committee and our landscape contractor Heritage Landscaping Services for their continued
care of the community common areas. May also has
produced a number of important community items
that residents need to be aware of and express their
opinions on the outcome.
On May 2nd, there is one more State Corporation
Commission Town Hall on the Dominion Power Line
project at 7 pm at Battlefield High School. It is very
important that all residents attend if possible and
express our opinion that these lines are at least buried
along Rte. # 66 or the entire project relocated from
the Haymarket area to Innovation Park off PWC Parkway in Manassas; all at Amazon’s cost. For those who
cannot attend this meeting and even those that can, a
sample letter which should also be sent to the SCC, is
available on the HH website Member Home page.
The Fitness Center Lounge Task Force Town Hall Open
Meeting takes place Tuesday 5/3 at 7 pm in the Club
House Ball Room. The concept drawings of what the
Task Force recommended to the Board 4/28 will be
presented and reviewed here for the community to
view and comment on these two projects. Resident
comments can always be expressed at any time before
and after that meeting to the Board. All minutes and
concept drawings from the 5 month Task Force meetings are on the website under Committees/ Ad Hoc/
Task Forces.
Regarding the HH website, we have now have been
using this website service for 2 years. It is time to give
the website and accompanying POS (point of sale)
system for food / beverage/golf sales a “checkup”. We
want to determine if the website is fulfilling the needs
of our users based on the objectives which were/ are
a way for residents and non- residents (outside golf
members, perspective buyers) to get and stay connected from anywhere and everywhere to what’s
available and happening in the community.
To get the website “checkup” done, a Web Services
Survey of 8 questions will be available from 5/1- 5/31
on line and also in print form at the Club House front
desk and in the Pro Shop for residents to review and
comment on. The POS system which is used primarily by staff is being reviewed at the same time by
UPT and CMC. All comments will be correlated and a
report made to the Board at their June 13th working
meeting and will be published in the July Horn. The
plan is to re-compete the contracts for the website
and POS services to make sure we are getting exactly
what is needed for HH. We intend to use the survey
data as a basis for the Requests for Proposals that will
be created and sent out this summer. Make sure to
read, review and answer the survey.
Resolutions that were approved at the March 3/24
Board meeting are listed below. Please note that due
to Horn publication dates, this information appears a
full month after the meeting. Residents can always go
the website for the full meeting minutes that are

Federal Bill To Provide HOA
Members Tax Relief
Introduced at the House of Representatives a bipartisan supported bill called the HOME Act (Helping
Our Middle-Income Earners) looks to amend “the
Internal Revenue Code to allow individual taxpayers an income-based tax deduction, up to $5,000, for
qualified homeowners association assessments paid
during the taxable year. The bill defines “qualified
homeowners association assessments” as regularly
occurring, mandatory financial assessments: (1) that
are paid by a taxpayer to a homeowners association
for the taxpayer’s principal residence, (2) that directly
benefit such residence, and (3) that arise from the
taxpayer’s mandatory and automatic membership
in such association. The bill requires homeowners
associations to file an informational return that sets
forth the name, address, and taxpayer identification
number of a taxpayer from whom the association
receives assessments and the amount of such assessments” Residents are urged to contact their local representatives to encourage passage of this bill. To learn
more you can either call the Community Associations
Institute information line 888-224-4321 or visit www.
congress.gov and search for bill H.R. 4696.

Web Service Survey Offered
WEB SERVICES SURVEY
TURN IN TO THE CLUBHOUSE FRONT DESK BY 5/31
1) How often do you visit/use the community website
www.HeritageHunt.net?
Daily
Weekly
Monthly
Never
During the month of May the Association would like
to hear from the community and non-resident golf
members about their level of usage and satisfaction
with the community website www.HeritageHunt.net.
What we hope to identify is what web service functions are used, what isn’t, what we need to add, and
how can we make the website even more attractive
and user friendly. The insights gleaned will help the
Asssociation as they look at future web services.
We ask each person in a household to either take the
survey online or turn in a completed print copy to
the Clubhouse Front Desk or one of the community
drop boxes by May 31. Participation is voluntary and
recorded anonymously. Those wishing to complete a
print copy can either tear out the survey form to the
right or pick up a copy at the Clubhouse Front Desk.
Results will be tallied and presented to the Board at
their June working board session.

Expand Your Horizons with
Free or Low Cost Education
Free college tuition may sound like a presidential election promise, but for Virginia seniors, course study at
state universities and college is already a reality!
Under the Virginia Senior Citizens Higher Education
Act, anyone who is age 60 and has had legal domicile
in the state for one year is eligible to participate in
both credit and non-credit courses for audit (receive
no credit). Those who seek
course credit and whose

taxable income has not exceeded $23,850 for the
preceding year in which enrollment is sought attend
classes for free. Seniors with any income level may
audit courses for free. Tuition-paying students receive first priority for class spaces. The law places no
limit on the number of semesters a senior citizen may
register for tuition-free courses. Audit, credit courses
or noncredit courses cannot exceed three courses per
semester.
George Mason University and Northern Virginia Community College catalogs delight those who want to
engage with any of a big range of subjects. What better way to learn a new language, study some form of
creative writing, or take a computer course to get up
to speed with a new technology?
For more information, visit www.gmu.edu or www.

calendars.
Low-cost learning options are available locally with
lifelong learning institute (LLI) affiliates.
Lifelong Learning - Manassas is hosted by the NOVA
Manassas campus, and in the words of its president,
Heritage Hunt resident Mary Foster, “has a class for
everyone.” It is a member of the Elderhostel Institute
Network, an umbrella organization for LLI affiliates in
the U.S. and Canada. The Manassas affiliate is administered and operated by its volunteers. Classes and
events are held at Hylton Performing Arts Center and
other Prince William County locations.
“Hone your writing skills, increase your knowledge
of science, explore the world’s religions, hike, learn
a new cooking skill or attend at performance at the
Hylton center,” Mary continues . Classes range from
a 90-minute workshop up to a 2-5 week series on
specific topics. Local day trips are organized every fall
and spring semester too. Clubs with weekly meetings
offer such topics as bridge, book, Mahjongg, camera, and computer clubs. Annual dues for unlimited
classes in two consecutive spring and fall semesters is
$100. Additional fees apply to some activities. www.

“We offer a wide variety of classes in four annual
terms,” said Susan Todenholt, Osher LLI administrator.
“Among our most popular classes are those in French
art of the 18th and 19th centuries that include field
trips to the National Gallery of Art; our concert series
in which musicians perform and interact with their
audiences. Our investment forum runs year ‘round
and meets every week as do our special interest clubs
in photography, cooking and other subjects.” Other Osher LLI activities include musical instrument instruction and “wining and dining” trips to wineries in the
Virginia countryside she said. May’s Senior Prom and
a Murder Mystery play in October performed by the
OLLI players are on the group’s social events calendar.
Todenholt said members benefit from not only from
teaching by GMU professionals, but also access to the
aquatic center, library, GMU email, campus parking,
and the online commercial lynda.com learning site.

The Community Relations Committee (CRC) sponsors the
popular Residents Forum Series featuring a fellow Heritage
Hunt resident sharing professional experiences, hobbies or
other areas of expertise with our community. The Forums
are held at the Clubhouse in the Mountain View Room on
the 2nd Tuesday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
May 10th “Mobile Hope” Donna Fortier, the daughter of
residents Jack and Judy Martins is the founder and CEO of
a growing charity called Mobile Hope, which helps young
people in need. There are many services for adults, but very
few for children who are alone and on their own. Would
you be surprised to learn that there are teenagers living
in tents along the W&OD Trail? Siblings who would rather
sleep in a car than become part of a bureaucracy that might
separate them. Where do these kids get a toothbrush? A
warm winter coat? They don’t want to stand out as “the
homeless kid” in their schools, so tend to stay in the shadows, afraid to participate. What do they say to their friends
when asked where they live? How do they explain why they
can’t have a sleepover or why their parents can’t drive them
to the football game?
Donna will tell us how she made the decision to leave her
comfortable corporate life and how a turtle helped her
make that decision. Learn how you can help!
June 14 “ Polio: The Scourge of Our Childhood” Howard
E. Gold, MD an 11 year resident of Heritage Hunt, after
practicing for 39 years as a Pediatric Physician in Massachusetts, will share his interest in the story of Polio and
how it affected the lives of our children. He will also cover
the many aspects of Polio from its earliest history to the
present.
The CRC invites all Heritage Hunt residents to share their
experiences with the community at future Residence

Where Are The AED’s?
An AED is an Automated External Defibrillator is a
device that could save a life. It provides an electric
shock to a person whose heart has stopped. And
there are SIX of them located in public areas at Heritage Hunt, with obvious signage pointing out their
locations.
•
Clubhouse lobby
•
Golf Pro Shop
•
Golf Maintenance Facility (by back gate)
•
Fitness Center
•
Marsh Mansion first floor rear hallway
•
Marsh Mansion Hunt Country Tavern
Anyone who can hear, read, kneel and follow directions can successfully apply an AED. Folks who
have been trained to use an AED can probably do so
quicker. What happens when someone collapses? The
procedure to follow is:
1. Shake them/attempt to arouse, “Are you ok”
2. Whether they stir or reply or lie still, stay with
the victim and DIRECT someone, “Call 911 And Get
the AED!!” The collapsed victim may have lost balance, consciousness or may have had a heart attack
or worse. Calling 911 will get emergency medical
personnel to your location to diagnose and treat the
victim. (the person making the 911 call should stay
on the line with the operator providing necessary
information)
3. If the victim is not conscious, or not breathing, immediately start Chest Compressions, CPR, a technique
that can be easily taught and does not require mouth
to mouth breaths. If someone says “I know CPR”, let
them help. Continue these compressions until the
victim regains consciousness, or until EMT’s arrive
and take over.
4. If someone brings an AED device, open case, TURN
ON AED. Follow recorded voice instructions immediately. Follow directions until EMT’s arrive.
CPR/AED classes are offered quarterly at Heritage
Hunt. Look for announcements on the Heritage Hunt
homepage or E-newsletter.

A Walk on the Cart Paths
Could Be Hazardous to
Your Health
Look up in the sky. It’s a bird; it’s a p lane; no it’s a
golf ball. Boink! Ouch! #@%*! Don’t let that happen
to you or a member of your family.
As Policy Resolution 9, Golf Course Regulations,
Section VIII, Prohibited Activities, Letter “A” states,
“During operating hours, only golfers and persons
authorized by the HOA or golf course operator are authorized to be on or use the golf course, including cart
paths. Walking (including walking of dogs), jogging,
bicycling or any other presence on the golf course by
non-golfers during operating hours is not permitted.”
The regulation is there for your safety. When the average golfer hits a golf ball, that 1.62-ounce solid, dimpled sphere travels at a speed of between 105 and180
miles per hour. It could sting and leave a nasty welt if
it hits soft tissue. It could do serious damage or death,
if it hits you in the head.
Please, do not walk, or allow a member of your family
to walk, on the cart paths or the course during the
hours of operation. The hours vary with the season.
Currently, the first tee time is 7:30 a.m. and the final
one is 7:00 p.m., which means that golfers will be on
the course until after sundown. In addition, the maintenance crew is out with the heavy equipment long
before the fist golfers hit the course.
We want everyone to enjoy the beauty of our community and to also keep out of harms way. Thank you for
your cooperation.

Golf Handicap Committee
The USGA has made a few changes to its ‘Rules &
Regulations’ for the 2016 season.
However, two basic premises underlie the USGA
Handicap System, namely that each player will try to
make the best score at every hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and the player
will post every acceptable round for peer review. The
player and the player’s Handicap Committee have
joint responsibility for adhering to these premises.
Fundamental to providing all players an opportunity
to compete on a “level playing field”, is a properly administered and monitored handicapping program.
Following USGA guidelines, the Handicap Committee
is responsible for developing criteria for the purpose
of reviewing individual players whose Handicap Index
does not accurately reflect his/her potential playing ability. An individual player whose Tournament
performance is found to be ‘exceptional’ may be contacted and asked to meet in person with the Handicap
Committee.
‘Exceptional’ performance is determined when
someone frequently performs in Tournaments at a
level inconsistent with reasonable expectations based
on USGA guidelines. As authorized by the USGA, the
Handicap Committee will have the right to modify or,
in extreme cases, withdraw a player’s Handicap Index.
It is important for all golfers to recognize basic expectations inherent in the handicapping system:
• Based on USGA research, the average player is expected to play equal to or better than their course
handicap about 25% of the time.
• Dean Knuth, former USGA Director of Handicapping, has stated that, “if you played 100 Tournaments of 100 players, each player should win but
once,” assuming that all golfers are abiding by the
score posting guidelines.
Should you have questions, please feel free to contact
a member of the Handicap Committee: Bill Sauder, Joe
Triano, Bettie Layman, Joy Plante, Bob Bettini, Judy
Murphy, and Susan Lucas.

It’s the first part of May; here are some important
things you can and should do now:
Fertilize your roses (with Espoma’s RoseTone) and
repeat every three weeks up to August 15, if they are
repeat bloomers. Pinch off any suckers at the base.
Save your rose’s energy for the more valuable part of
the plant: the flowers! Please remember that deadheading roses will keeps the bush blooming (if it is a
repeat-blooming variety). However, don’t deadhead
them after September 30; this lets the last roses set
seed --- allowing the plant to go into dormancy for the
upcoming winter.
Fertilize your bulbs (it’s not too late). Work BulbTone
or bone meal into the ground around your bulbs so it
cannot be washed away. Put any fertilizer or systemic
you use under the mulch so it gets to your plants more
efficiently.
Scratch in 1.5 inches of LeafGro compost around your
plants. This will rejuvenate your soil, and help your
plants become stronger and more floriferous. Don’t
use around plants with silvery/blue leaves as they
don’t like rich soil. And don’t pile anything high at the
plant’s base which will cut off oxygen and rot the base.
After enriching your soil, put one inch of mulch down
and water thoroughly. Mulching before the summer
heat will help retain water in your soil, cool the soil
and keep weeds down (or at least make them easier to
pull).
Put lime (alkaline) around your hydrangea bushes for
pinker flowers, or aluminum sulfate (acid) for bluer
flowers. White hydrangeas will not change color.
For ANNUALS, use MiracleGro or any fertilizer that
is high in phosphorus--the middle number--such as
Jack’s Classic Blossom Booster 10-30-20 or Green
Light Super Bloom 12-55-6 with chelated iron, in a
watering can once a week and you will have more
flowers than ever before! Phosphorus (the middle
number listed on fertilizers) encourages blooming, as
well as strong roots and disease resistance.
Other than annuals, do not fertilize perennial plants
past August 30th. This will slow them down in preparation for winter dormancy -- rather than encouraging
them to remain actively growing.

Few people have as powerful of an impact than a mom
and that impact doesn’t have an expiration date. We
all find ourselves “sounding like our mother” at some
point in time. It could be as Buddy Hackett shared,
“My mother’s menu consisted of two choices: Take it
or leave it.” Or how about “If I told you once, I’ve told
you a million times. Don’t exaggerate!” One, I have
found myself recently saying to my kids is “One day
you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like
you!” And yes it has happened to me as a young parent. I am blessed to have three kids, two who look like
me, and one that behaves like me. Amazing how my
prayer life has expanded since becoming a parent of a
child like me. Now my parents get to enjoy watching
us stumble as we seek to rear our kids in a healthy
way.
A recent lesson learned is that a mother’s impact
doesn’t end when the kids leave to start a life of their
own. It is no surprise that a mom regularly puts aside
their own needs to meet the needs of their kids. For
grandmas, it could be baby sitting, providing a meal,
cheering on your grandkids at a sporting event or as
recently experienced teaching the granddaughter how
to get the right curl in her hair to look extra special
the next day. Seeing our young daughter get giddy
over the new look she just learned how to do points to
the fact that even the smallest moments shared create
a lasting impact that can be multi-generational.
Today, we share meals that were regular recipes of
our mom(s). In our household it is a beef curry dish
that I will ashamedly be gluttonous over. Another I’ll
never forget, was a liver dish my mom tried to pass
as a steak and brussel sprouts and fried okra as tasty
compliments to any meal. It was a lengthy time sitting at the table choking down the food but we did
it to show appreciation for the meal and for fear of
the consequence for not eating. It still amazes me the
many different meals my mom cooks up when we
spend time together. It also touches my wife’s heart
when she hears her kids compliment the meal provided asking her to write down the recipe for them to enjoy in the future. And yes, now I like brussel sprouts.
Moms, whatever your talent may be let me encourage you to seize opportunities to continue to create
memorable moments in your kids and grandkids (and
for some great grandkids). Keep yourself as an available source of insight for your kids, they need it. Share
stories of your life and keep a record of those moments you make with them. It will be those memories
you and others may draw strength from in the future.
Lastly, THANK YOU for all the sacrifices and expressions of love you gave unconditionally. They have
made a never ending impact. Happy Mother’s Day!

What a magical night for the Bull Run Warrior
Retreat. The Silent Auction, lottery and 50/50 was
a success, the final number is not in but I can report
approximately $17,000 was the last number I heard.
The fabulous models in their Stein Mart clothes took
to the runway like they owned it. The Men In Song
overwhelmed the room with their military tribute
and Angela Knight wowed everyone with her angelic
voice and support for the veterans. Joe Maranto, HH
artist and Veteran presenting the portrait of his sketch
of Nick Thom and his wife Samantha to them was a
humbling experience. Our own HH resident Margaret

Another exciting announcement is that Nick Thom

Honoring Our Vets
For the past four years the Heritage Hunt (HH) Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America
(MOAA) has been meeting WWII, Korean and terminally ill Vietnam veterans at Dulles International
Airport under the National Honor Flight support
program run for our chapter by LTC Herb Tuttle, USA
(Retired).
A four year total of 174 MOAA members (many of the
same people each year) and 34 non-MOAA residents
of HH met 96 flights and greeted or bid farewell to
5,368 Veterans. That’s good participation, though we
think there were more non-MOAA members, both
inside HH and outside, who came but we have no way
of identifying them.
The 2016 Spring season started April 18th and will
run through the beginning of June, and resume in
August through October. Scheduled dates are May 7,
10, 26 and June 5. To register as a greeter or to learn
more please visit their website www.heroeswelcomeiad.com for the most up to date schedule and available
greeting options.
Please consider joining us and surprise these Vets, as
they aren’t expecting anyone at Dulles. It’s a moving
experience for the Vets and their greeters so come on
out and greet these valiant men and women who sacrificed so much for our freedom. For a resident point
of contact please call LTC Herb Tuttle at: (703) 7435345 either in the afternoons or evenings.

Animal Sanctuary Donation
As a resident I want to share about a unique opportunity to help an organization I volunteer for. It is
called the The Trixie Foundation in June. A classmate
of mine started The Trixie Foundation 25 years ago. It
is a 501 charity that is a no-kill animal sanctuary for
adandoned and abused dogs and cats. You can learn
more about the charity by visiting www.thetrixiefoundation.org. Located in Webbville, Kentucky, the
founder Randy Skaags, named the foundation after his
first rescue dog, Trixie.
On June 1st I hope to bring my vehicle full of much
needed supplies. Any donations would be wonderful!
Below is a wish list that will serve 276 dogs and many
cats as well. With so many of us being animal lovers
will you help me get the word out? Items that they
could use are:
• Dog and cat food
• Flea/tick shampoo and Frontline (tick prevention)
• Used beds, towels and wash clothes
• Cleaning products and paper towels
WIth one month to collect items before my trip, I am
excited to see what we can collect as a community.
To help make it easier for you I am willing to pick up
items from you or you are welcome to leave items at
my door - 13958 Breeders Cup Dr. Thank you for your
donations and for questions, call me at 703-743-2499.

Swing, Salsa, Rumba, Waltz
Want to learn or improve your
dance skills? Beginning Monday May 2nd Kathy
and Randy Stachel will start an afternoon class
in the basics of East Coast Swing. Class will start
at 3:00 PM and last until 4:00 PM and be held in
the clubhouse ballroom. May and June classes
will focus solely on East Coast Swing (fast dance).
July and August classes will focus on Rumba
(slow dance). Later months will move into other
dances like Cha-Cha, West Coast Swing, Waltz,

Heritage Hunt Little Theater capped a busy month
with the three performances of our spring production
“Boeing Boeing,” a French farce by Marc Camoletti.
The hilarious tour de force of an American architect
trying to balance his life with three fiancées kept the
audiences laughing (as well as actors, directors, and
production staff). As is typical, nearly every member
of the Little Theater was involved in the production:
actors, directors, readers, painters, carpenters, sound
and light techs, costumers, makeup artists, small prop
and stage managers, decorators, seamstresses, ticket
sales people, and publicity. Truly there is a job for
everyone in theater. We thank all of our friends and
neighbors who support Heritage Hunt Little Theater.
As if the play wasn’t enough, HHLT met on April 28
for dinner and a short biopic of Neil Sedaka, all timed
to coordinate with the Heritage Hunt Concert Series
program later in the evening.
May’s meeting will be held on Thursday, May 19th at
7pm in the Marsh Mansion. The meeting will feature
a program on directing and acting. Anyone interested
in furthering their understanding of these subjects is
welcome to come. Please contact Membership Chair
Ginny McCardle at 1803/[email protected] for
information on joining.

Where Creativity Abounds
Thru October 2016
24
Come by the Arts and Crafts Room any Thursday
morning and you will see anywhere from 12 to 18
people having more fun than
seniors should legally have. We
are in the throes of creativity,
each of us off on our individual
adventure with a brush in hand.
Members feel free to stick their
nose in their neighbor’s endeavors and praise abounds. No one
is exempt from constructive
criticism as we formally critique
each other’s work at the end of each session.
Occasionally we have an exceptional artist\instructor
come by and move us on to greater heights. Watercolorist Toni Bragg was our most recent on April 6th.
The art group is comprised of people who use various
mediums: watercolors, pastels, Acrylic, oil, etc. Many
of our artists are finishing up items entered in “Art at
the Mill” April 23rd through May 8th and The Plains
“Piedmont Regional Art Show” May 20, 21 and 22nd.
Also check out our two-month exhibit in the lower
level of the club house mid-May and you may also find
some new paintings of ours upstairs by May. Thanks
to those of you who have supported us over the years.

My family and I have been patients of Gainesville Dental Associates for

been incredibly friendly, efficient, professional and perform great work.
My last several visits have been with Nichole and Dr. Davenport and they

For The Love Of Song
Spring has kept us waiting this year. One day 80 and
the next an overnight freeze. My beautiful Magnolia
blossoms turned brown overnight. But the sun will
come out tomorrow. Little Orphan Annie was right
about that.
Until we get that nice weather, the Women of Note
will lift your spirits with some beautiful music. On
May 11th and 12th we will be waiting to entertain you
with an array of melodies. Some familiar, some new,
but all sung with heart and the strong desire to please
you, our audience.
The cost for the nostalgia and comradery is only $10
for concert seating. Our director, Bobbie Bragg, always
finds music to keep your toes tapping and your eyes
smiling and your ears shouting “Horray!” So join us
and listen and sing along if you want to. We love to see
you enjoying yourselves. It makes all the rehearsing
worthwhile. See you there!

The Heritage Hunt Chapter of the American Wine
Society invites members and guests to join us as we
continue our exploration of quality wines, wineries,
vineyards and wine-makers. We’re dedicated to the
appreciation and enjoyment of wine from around the
world.
Our March 2016 meeting included an introduction
to the excellent wines being produced by Francis
Ford Coppola at his new Virginia Dare Winery in
the Alexander Valley AVA just north of Napa Valley,
California. In April, we tasted the rich and delightful
wines produced in Mendoza, Argentina. The quality
and value of this region’s wines was readily apparent
as we sampled Bodega Luigi Bosca-Arizu and learned
about viniculture in the foothills of the Andes.
On May 16 we will return to Virginia, and continue
our wine adventure with a presentation from Howard
O’Brien, founder and owner of Chateau O’Brien at
Northpoint Winery & Vineyard in nearby Markham.
We’ll have the chance to sample the range of highquality red and white wines produced by Mr. O’Brien
right in our area.
Chateau O’Brien grows its own grapes following Mr.
O’Brien’s belief that producing the best wine possible starts in the vineyard: “Wines are made in the
vineyard first.” The steep slopes and rocky soils (that
are readily evident if you visit the winery) provide
excellent drainage and trace elements that contribute
to the quality and texture of the wines. The wines embody the unique and enduring characteristics of the
soil and climate. The vineyard has been in production
for 11 years, and the winery focuses on hand-crafted,
small-lot production. CNN featured Chateau O’Brien
in a piece on Virginia wineries in March 2013. Mr.
O’Brien has visited with us previously and his presentations are always both informative and entertaining.
You’ll appreciate his commitment to practices that
affirm and take advantage of our Northern Virginia
terroir.
The Virginian Dining Room will open at 6:45pm on
Monday May 16 with ‘social’ wines and the opportunity for you to greet old friends and meet new ones.
The presentation of our featured Chateau O’Brien
wines will follow. As always we’ll have delicacies for
paring. Door prizes will conclude a great event.
Reservations for our May 16 event are required for
members and guests (who are always encouraged).
Event registration closes at 12pm noon Friday May 13.
To reserve your seat contact Emily Russell at omieljr@
aol.com or 703-743-1875. You can pay the tasting
fee of $22/person at the door by cash or check. Our

American Wine Society.

Physical activity is imperative for all of us, but the social aspect of group exercise is important as well. Getting comfortable in the water by socially interacting
and physically moving all parts of the body through
interval training is a great way to get started in an
aqua fitness activity.
Pool workouts are formatted to build strength, cardio fitness, flexibility, balance, and stress relief. The
blood moves through the body at a faster rate in the
water temperatures between 83-85 degrees farenheit.
Your heart rate wil be lower in water based activities
versus land exercises. The movement of the water
against the body results in a “massage” and during the
cool down “relaxation” period. Water exercise allows
for a greater range of motion and enhances continued
recovery for many health issues without feeling aches
or pains.
Moderate and regular exercise in the water has proven successful in managing risk factors such as blood
pressure, cholestrol, and self esteem. Try us out and
you’ll notice a difference. We are here all year long
and hope to see you at the indoor pool at 8:30 AM on
Tuesdays and Fridays.

If The Shoe Fits...
Now that warmer weather has come in full swing we
all look to enjoy the outdoors more with a brisk walk,
jog or run. We pull out our walking/running shoes
and set off not realizing the potential impact our
shoes can have on our body’s workout. Just like the
type of tire can impact where and how a car moves
effectively, so do your shoes. So what should one
consider when making a shoe selection? It starts with
identifying your desired activity and whether your
foot pronates, supinates or no-nates.
When considering the desired activity you want to
think about the intensity of the activity, the season of
the year, the type of terrain, such as indoor/outdoor,
wet or dry environment, rough or smooth surface,
etc. You also want to identify the “nate” of your foot.
A simple way to do this is to wet your foot and take a
step on a paper towel laying on the floor. Based on the
footprint made you can determine what “nate” you
are.
No-nate (normal) foot prints show the heel and
forefoot connected by a broad band (Picture A). This
points to a foot that rolls slightly inward as you walk
or run thus absorbing shock. Stability type shoes
work well as they provide a good mix of mid foot support and cushion.
Pronator or flat footprints show the whole sole of the
foot pointing to an over inward roll as you walk/run
(Picture B). Typically you want to find a high stability
shoe that has a firm midsole. While a bit heavier and
more rigid they tend to be more durable.
Supinator or narrow footprints show a narrow band
between the heel and forefoot (Picture C). This points
to a foot stride that isn’t properly absorbing the shock
of each step taken. A very flexible but cushioned shoe
with a soft midsole work well as they encouraged foot
motion or roll to get proper shock absorption back.
Once you have determined both the desired activity
and foot print it is time to pick the right shoe with a
removeable insole. This is where a third party orthotic provider can be of help. You can find them at speciality running store or a medical provider such as an
orthopaedist. While it may seem time consuming to
do so your body will thank you. With the right shoe fit
you can enjoy your walk, jog or run and decrease your
chance of injury which saves you time and money.

NORTHERN VA
WITH OVER
20 YEARS OF
EXPERIENCE
March began with a return to Long Park in Haymarket.
The elusive water crossing continues to be a challenge.
Our first few hikes here resulted in us having to scale
up a steep hill along the water’s edge where there
was no trail. We finally found the area meant to be the
crossing but the water was too deep to cross. We are
determined to complete all of the 4 miles of trails in
a loop with no backtracking so we will try again late
summer when it should be drier.
As the spring arrived and weather warmed up, we
hiked the section of the Bull Run Occoquan Trail from
route 28 to Bull Run Park including the Bluebell Loop
near the park. Our timing was perfect for this hike as
the bluebells were in full bloom. This is a beautiful area
running along the water for most of the hike with small
hills and water views.
Scheduled hikes in May include White Oak Canyon in
the Shenandoah as well as Prince William Forest near
Woodbridge. Please check the Activities Section for
more information on these hikes. To be added to the
HH Hiking Club email contact list please email Margi
Worrest at [email protected]. This will keep you
informed of cancellations due to weather issues as well
as any additions or changes to our hiking schedule. For

Cycling Club News
In May, our start time
at the Marsh Mansion
will be 8:30 AM. In
June, after school lets
out, we will change
our start time to 8 AM.
Can you believe 70
degree temperatures
in March and 80
degree temperatures
in April? Doesn’t it
feel really good to be
riding without being
all bundled up? The
warmer weather in March and April allowed us to return
to riding 3-4 days each week. It also allowed us to travel
offsite to ride at Prince William Forest (see left picture
below), to DC twice to observe the cherry blossoms
up close at their peak (see right picture below), on the
W&OD trail, and to other locations.
April 1st, we received our new cycling jerseys from Primal Wear. On April 23rd, several cyclists participated in
a ride along the new bike trail that connects Richmond
and Williamsburg. This scenic trail, which was completed in August of 2015, meanders along the James River
for 50 miles. It’s a great ride. Put it on your bucket list.
The Cycling Club is meets every Monday – Friday at
the Marsh Mansion, except on days we transport our
bikes to start points
outside of HH. On
Tuesdays the Club
has been conducting a leisurely ride
lasting 60 minutes
(plus or minus a
minute or two) over
mostly level terrain.
The ride stopped for
a water break at 30
minutes and at Subway at Merchants Square in Dominion Valley for coffee,
tea, sodas, and chit chat before returning to HH.
Some folks have stated that they would like to ride with
us, but have an aversion to leaving the confines of HH.
So, we have started a new Tuesday option that rides for
one hour at a very leisurely pace in the northern and
flatter end of HH. Come on out and give this new format
a try. Remember, on all of our rides, we never leave you
to ride alone unless you ask us to do so. We are always
there to help with a flat tire and to guide you home
safely.
We have lots of fun rides outside of Heritage Hunt
planned for this summer and fall. Some will include an
overnight stay at interesting locations. Persons not yet
on the HH Cycling Club email list may get on the list by
emailing Bob Shannon at [email protected]. Being
on the list will allow you to know when weather conditions are considered too severe to ride locally or when
the club is going to take a ride with a starting point away
from HH.

The Bocce League is off to a great start. Our league,
now in its seventh season, continues its unique
growth. We now have twenty-four teams of six players. Counting substitutes, and a waiting list, we have
165 players. It is the second largest participatory
sport at Heritage Hunt, behind golf.
There are a large number of rookies, and all practiced
so they would be ready in time for Opening Day. The
teams this year have some colorful names. Some relate to the rolling aspect of the game. Some are Italian
in nature reflecting the heritage of the game. Others
are just fun. These are the names and the captains.
Heritage Division:
• Baci Grandi – Bill Daly (defending champions)
• The Botches – Joan Donnelly & Mary Ann Jacobsen
• The Bulls – Mike Lyden
• Canto di Trombo – Frank Maresca
• The High Rollers – Phyllis Olitsky
• The Mustangs – Jan Gonyaw
• The Pallino Pals – Bill Gorodnick
• Rolling Thunder – Howard Gold
• The Sixers – Creighton Turner
• The Sweepers – Robert Pourciau
• The Tornadoes – Ed Rozenblat
• The Untouchables – Ann Thornton
Hunt Division:
• The Bocce Bambinos – Bob and Ellie Rewald
• The Bocce Warriors – Herb Thompson
• Chewbocce – Helen Esposito
• The Clippers – Gino “The Barber” LoConte
• The Condo Chicks – Jane Hollandsworth
• The Doo Wops – Rich and Sandy Salva
• La Bocce Vita – Larry Barrett
• Mama Mia! – Nancy Modrak
• The Marsh Smashers – Nadine Bishop
• The Pallino Paisanos – Jack McDonald
• Red & Green Thunder – Mark Siegel
• The Shamrocks – Mike Ennis
The season rolls for nine weeks, then there are playoffs and the championship set for June 18.
You are invited to watch the excitement. You will see
some wonderful shots and some not so wonderful.
But the overriding spirit of fun and camaraderie will
be obvious. It’s every Saturday morning. The Bocce
Courts are located in front of the Marsh Mansion.

How Much Can You Sell Your
Heritage Hunt Home For?
If you think, “As much as my neighbors got,” you’re on the right track, but there’s more to
consider. Comparables, ‘comps,’ are most useful when they’re the same model as yours and
have closed within a few days of your home’s listing - but these ARE NOT the norm!
Even with an exact comp match, you need an active REALTOR® with experience selling a
variety of homes in Heritage Hunt, analyzing comps (like checking with the agent to see if the
seller offered incentives) & interpreting local market conditions. I’m ready to help!
Let’s chat today about your home and set a date for a home
valuation to find out how much you can sell your home for.
It’s FREE & there’s NO OBLIGATION to list your home for sale.
