Sacramento Sierra Chapter December 2015 Appraisal News & Review President’s Letter RECORD DESIGNATIONS, BREA INFILTRATION AND EXTREME BOWLING As 2015 rapidly comes to an end we proudly present news, highlights and a little humor from the past year at the Sacramento Sierra Chapter of the Appraisal Institute. Top 12 highlights of 2015 20 new designtions— a record! Well, we’re pretty sure, because we had 17 last year, and we were pretty sure that was a record. (7 MAI, 3 SRA and 10 AI-GRS in 2015) 2015 President John Ashworth, SRA Two designations awarded to BREA employees—yes, they’re among us, and we’re glad to have them in the AI and in our chapter! New designee Dylan Ridgely, SRA coming all the way from Crescent City, just south of the Oregon border, to receive his certificate at the Installation Dinner. Learning about the career and background of Ron Garland, MAI, SRA in the wonderful presentation by Smokey Stover, MAI, AI-GRS as Ron was awarded the chapter’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the Installation Dinner. There was a great recounting of a character-defining (and career-altering moment in standing up to [well-known lender] employer pressure! The Economic Forecast in January with presentations by top economists, market specialists and a Sacramento Kings owner, followed by a good lunch and giveaway of NBA collectibles. Several chapter members having a work day to help in the building of a local Habitat for Humanity house. Our two-day Fall Conference in Tahoe—always a favorite destination with great topics and speakers. Bowling night and chapter meeting at Strikes in Rocklin, with Andy Burger, MAI (our new Secretary -Treasurer for 2016) and Kevin Ziegenmeyer, MAI receiving their designation certificates. Dick Seevers, MAI, SRA announcing that he had been waiting since 1991 to present Kevin with that certificate, and that, as best as he could determine, the candidacy was a record length for Region I…and probably right up there nationwide. Kevin’s aforementioned record for longest candidacy prior to designation being erased just two months later when new SRA John Hassler, Supervising Property Appraiser Investigator for the BREA, reported at the Installation Dinner that he began his candidacy in 1987. I think John’s record of 28 years is safe. Judd Cline, MAI rolling his only two strikes of the evening while bowling out of turn, one scored to me and the other to his mother, Kathy Cline, SRA (keeping us both out of last place). The latter gift was actually a trick shot: following a standard bowling approach Judd swung the ball behind his back and then forward through his legs—for a perfect strike (your results may vary). An updated chapter website to improve functionality, appearance and ease of maintenance for Jenny. Arrival of Dominic Calabrese: the baby’s due date was the day of the bowling event, but Jenny confidently and correctly predicted that the newest family member would not be born until the next day, then attended to all the details of the event (though she wisely refrained from acrobatic bowling maneuvers). That was actually 13 highlights but I didn’t want to attach an unlucky element to the heading. I hope there were no glaring omissions…if so please inform Bob Steed. Seriously, however, many thanks to Bob for all his hard work on the Continued to page 2... ..Continued from page 1 newsletters for the past sev- eral years! aspects of chapter operations, and continues to be the constant as chapter volunteers arrive and depart. Michael John Dolim Jennifer Smith Lisa Besso Greg Ferrero Clayton E. Warren John Vo Serve on a committee or the board. Most positions have a very minor time commitment; no more than four meetings a year, mostly via WebEx. If you are Congratulations to our Newly interested further in serving as an officer, the chapter would likely provide expense paid attendance to the Designated Members as of Leadership Development Advisory Council (LDAC) July 2015 conference in Washington DC. It’s held every Spring in a very nice venue, is limited to 100 AI ap- Nelson Wong, MAI praisers nationwide, and is very equipping for AI Justin Kobilis, MAI and career leadership skills. Michael Mobley, MAI Consider submitting news or an article for the news- Jeffrey R. Shouse, MAI letter: news from your firm (promotion, award, reChristina Morlatt, SRA tirement, etc.); background on an interesting market John S. Hassler, SRA area, locale or property type; the most dangerous, Dylan Ridgley, SRA weird or awkward experience in the field—whatever might entertain or inform the chapter? Just send it in -we can edit as needed. Also…it’s not bad for your resume to note that you’ve had an article published! Well, it seems that this past year has been good for appraising. I’m thankful for a busy 2015 which had a lot of interesting and diverse assignments. And I’m also very thankful for having been able to work with, and get to know better, some of the best appraisers in the region. We really do have some great people and great appraisers in our Sacramento-Sierra Chapter. I’d like to thank fellow 2015 officers Adam Bursch, MAI and Steve Parent, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS for all their efforts this year—they are extremely capable and committed to our chapter, and we are in great hands going into 2016. Thanks also to each of the volunteer board members and committee members for their service and dedication to the chapter, to Kathy Cline for creativity and dedication in organizing our events throughout the year, and to Jenny Calabrese, our Executive Director, who handles all 2015 Designation Recognition Andrew Burger, MAI (12/10/14) Continued to page 3... ...Continued from page 2 Blake Lindsay, MAI (1/31/15) Kevin Ziegenmeyer, MAI (3/31/15) Dylan Ridgley, SRA (8/11/15) John Hassler SRA (8/13/15) Christina Morlatt, SRA (8/19/15) Jeff Shouse, MAI (10/15/15) 2016 Executive Officers Adam Bursch, MAI (President) Steve Parent, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS (Vice President) Andrew Burger, MAI (Secretary/Treasurer) Welcome New Board Members 2016 Jared Calabrese, MAI (2018) Justin Lambert, MAI (2018) Joe Esparza, MAI (2018) Departing Board Members 2015 Rob Weck, MAI Thank you for your dedicated service to our chapter!
