Balance
I couldn’t begin to count the number of car
tires I mounted and balanced in my dad’s
store and shop. People would come in and
describe the various shakes, shimmies, rumbles, and thumps they experienced as they
drove. I was always amazed by how my dad
could listen to the customer, look at the old tire,
and then tell what the problem was. Often the tires
had to be replaced because they were out of balance. The identifiable patterns told the story. And almost every time the driver was totally unaware
of the imbalance and the potential problems the condition could cause.
As important as balance is for those little tires on a car, it is far more
critical for the large tires on a big rig. The imbalance can begin slowly
and remain unnoticed for some time. But, eventually, if not corrected,
it will cause a major hazard that can jeopardize the driver, his rig, his
cargo, and the driving public. Obviously, all the factors that result in
balance are important and good. The factors that result in imbalance
are also important but not good.
If you’re heading down the highway with all your tires properly balanced, you have confidence in your rig and you feel safe and secure.
The more normal the road surface, the smoother the trip. But you
know there is no such thing as a perfectly smooth road. Still, you glide
over the minor imperfections with little or no notice. Every now and
then you hit a pothole and you can feel and hear the response of your
tires and rig. You might let it pass without any real concern. However,
if you let it go unchecked, each subsequent “bump in the road” can
help lead to potentially dangerous circumstances.
Maintaining balance is an important principle for all of us to apply in life.
Whether it is applied to your truck tires, the food you eat, the exercise you
get (or don’t get), your spending habits, the way you relate to your family
and others, or whatever, a sense of balance helps you to move safely past
the minor obstacles and even to safely navigate the most difficult ones.
Regardless of where you apply the principle of balance, there is a point at
which that balance occurs—just like the point where I had to attach those
lead weights to a car rim so it would balance properly and run safely.
That specific balance point for life is the Son of God, Jesus. Apart from
Him everything will be out of balance sooner or later. And in the long
run, that guarantees circumstances that are eternally dangerous.
Learn the telltale patterns in your life that indicate you’re getting out
of balance. Don’t let your life get so far out of balance with God that
you end up running down an eternally dangerous road. TFC is here to

Old Gray Dog Surprise

I attend, you
never know when
you might encounter
something from the past you may have forgotten existed.
Such was the case at our TFC Lebanon Truck Rally in
June 2014, when I saw this 1956 GM Greyhound bus with
a sign on front that said “THE BASICS.” At once a light
went on in my head: that was the name of the music group
from the Hatfield, Pennsylvania, area, about seventy miles
east of Lancaster. The Basics was a group of young singers
led by Abe Kratz, who was also a truck driver; they would
sing at our TFC events in the Lancaster area back in the
1980s (the inset photo above shows them at a TFC retreat
back then).

The current owner of the bus is Wally Alderfer, who
bought it in 2000, a couple of years after The Basics
retired. Wally said the bus was sitting on a farm that he
passed on a regular basis. He had such good memories of
the old bus and, like most of us, was always fascinated
with “them old Gray Dogs.” So one day he gave in,
stopped, and inquired about buying it. After more stops
and negotiating, the bus was his! Soon after, in 2001, he
took his wife and five children on a nationwide tour. The
bus still has twenty of the original seats, with some that
turn around to face each other, as well as cupboards and
beds in the back. He also told me that was not the first
nationwide trip for the bus; The Basics had also taken the
bus on a nationwide tour years before.
In the years since, they have taken the bus on several camping trips, and have taken busloads of friends to concerts and
other events. Wally said the old bus still runs great and he
loves to drive it and hear that Detroit purr. i

Oh, What a Day!
hat was Doris High’s heading for her blog post about the 2015 Pennsylvania Truck Rally. And no wonder! It
was a first in the rally’s 34-year history: non-stop rain forced the organizers to cancel the parade, something
that had become a popular event in the community, with people lining up the parade route, often setting up
pup tents, bringing picnic baskets, and just having an all-around good time while waiting for the trucks to come by,
with the kids thrilled when truckers responded to their hand movement that signaled, “Blow the air horn!”

The main reason for the cancellation, Doris said, was that the eight-mile parade involves four separate fire companies and a lot of trucks parked on the grounds. They prayed—what would God have them do because of all the rain?
The “truck” part of the committee decided that it didn’t seem necessary for all those men and women to get wet. And
safety was a concern.
“Close to ninety brave truckers brought their beautiful rigs,” she wrote. “That was a small Truck Rally ‘fleet’ for us,
but everyone had a good day.” (Note: the truck rally averages 200+ trucks every year.)
“The rain also forced them to rent another large building on the Lebanon Expo grounds,” she wrote. “All the children’s activities fit inside—even the barrel train, ice cream truck, Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, and Lawn and Laurel
Cook’s cotton candy machine. It was a perfect building for the children and their parents. The children’s committee
is already giving us strong hints to rent this building every year from now on.”
One good result of the rain was that the afternoon benefit auction had its best attendance ever, since being outside
was “out.” “The close of the day was the best,” Doris reported, “with a gospel concert by the Browns from Le Mars,
Iowa. The North Hall was as full as if it were a sunny day!” In spite of the upheaval caused by the weather, she said
they all agreed, “God gave us a good day!” i

f Grieving trucker finds comfort and salvation in Christ
After I walked the lot this morning giving Highway News to drivers, Shawn came into the chapel and I was able to
spend quality time sharing the Gospel and plan of salvation with him; then I asked him if he would like to have Christ
come into his life. He answered in the affirmative and, with tears streaming down his face, he prayed the sinner’s
prayer with me and then he told me how he was still grieving the death of his 31-year-old brother who took his life
this past summer. I believe I saw Shawn become a Christian today.

f Repentance restores driver's relationship with God
Driver David came in asking for prayer because he had given in to temptation and was feeling the conviction of the
Holy Spirit and wanting to get right with God. We had a good discussion and prayer. He left with a smile and several CDs to listen to.

f Interesting day at the chapel
We had a blessed time this morning as Bunny and Peg (from the International Office) showed up. They really had
some good encouraging words. All through the day we had someone here at the chapel. When Bunny was leaving,
Mark, who has been hanging around, came in and we had a long talk. After that, two drivers dropped by. Nick was
looking for encouragement on how to help out a friend; he is from this area and was also looking to see what it would
take to get involved. Then Bobby showed up; he needed a lot of prayer.

f Trucker learns the Lord is always in control
Dennis is a rookie just getting into this trucking thing. His truck broke down and he’s stuck here for the night. He
talked about his frustrations with the job and what was going on with things at home. After I let him vent and unwind,
we talked about no matter how bad things get, our heavenly Father is always in control and loves us without limit.
We had prayer and he went on his way in a better mood than when he came in. Praise the Lord!

f God's Word helps in times of trouble
While I was having my morning coffee over at the truck stop, trucker Joe sat down and began to share the burden he
was carrying around. I shared the Word of God with him and prayed with him and he left with tears in his eyes and
a happier countenance.

Holly stopped in around 6:30 PM while her husband was fueling at the pumps. She talked about the number of drivers they were blessed to lead to the Lord already this year as they minister on the road.

f One-on-one conversations with chaplains help drivers
Walking the lot was the way to make contacts today. Some were not ready or able to visit long. One driver needed a
time of conversation. He was baptized at a young age but seemingly has not grown spiritually. I pray the Spirit will
use our time together to stir his awareness and need of a deeper walk. Later, as I was ready to leave, Harold came in.
He mentioned several times that he has times of depression. We had a great time of fellowship of things of the Lord
and sharing experiences for more than an hour. It was a good time for both of us.

f Driver needed encouragement, chaplain was there for him
Jason stopped by in the evening needing encouragement. He lives and drives locally but, as many times as he walked
past the chapel, he never came in. This time he needed the encouragement of another person to talk to and so the Lord
brought him here. We had a good visit and were able to share a video together. The video emphasized the joy of the
Lord and the fact that we need to allow the Lord to have His way in our lives. Jason was headed to Massachusetts
but was quick to tell me he would certainly be back, knowing there was someone here for him.

From Wounds to Cocoons - to Freedom

Webster defines a wound as “an injury; a cut or breach; an injury to feelings, reputation, etc.” A cocoon is defined as
“any of various protective coverings.”
Out here in the asphalt jungle, we meet many wounded people who have wrapped themselves in a cocoon to keep
from getting hurt again and again. Hurt by whom? Family, friends, churches, jobs, and the list goes on. The hurts are
as wide and deep as the drivers are different. Yet, the same defense often takes place—the building of a protective
cocoon.
The cocoon doesn’t always look the same. A driver may use his job to stay away from troubles at home. A transient
may be running away from reality. A woman may be trying to find love and acceptance by turning to prostitution.
People wrap themselves in alcohol, drugs, lying, stealing, cheating, etc. Whatever form the protective layer may take,
every time they are hurt the cocoon gets thicker until nothing or no one can penetrate it—except God’s Holy Spirit
through His message and His messengers!
“What do you know about this?” you ask. As a young mother of two small children, I lost my husband of five years
in a nasty truck accident. Without realizing it, I began to spin a cocoon around myself and my children to make the
pain bearable. Many years later, after remarriage, two more children, and finally opening up to the Lord’s healing
Spirit, the cocoon began to unwind. As God’s light penetrated the deep recesses of my mind and spirit, the buried
hurts came forth just as Lazarus came from the grave at the call of Jesus, after the stone was removed from the
entrance of the tomb. God used my husband to help remove the stone. The comfort I could offer to other hurting people was used by God as a means to slowly unwrap my own grave clothes. And God’s Holy Spirit removed the face
napkin to clear my vision.
As a caterpillar wraps a cocoon around itself, so we bury our hurts. But just as it emerges as a beautiful butterfly, so
also can we come forth as new, beautiful, free creatures of the Lord! I could have chosen to stay in the cocoon and
become a bitter person, but I chose life in Jesus Christ! What about you? i
Let Jesus Set You Free from Your Cocoon
R Believe in Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins and for eternal life.
R Confess Jesus as your Savior and Lord and turn from your sins.
R Pray this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I know that I’m a sinner. I believe that You died on the cross and shed Your blood
to pay the penalty for my sins. Please forgive me and come into my life. You are my Savior and Lord.”

O There’s No Such Thing!

he 2nd Annual East Coast Marmon
Show was held in September of 2014 at
Weaver’s Market parking lot in
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It was another
great success, with Marmon fans attending from
as far away as New Brunswick, Canada.
Although this Canadian didn’t bring his Marmon
this year, he said he just wanted to check things
out; he hopes to bring his truck next year.
Several Marmon owners from all over Virginia
and Maryland brought their trucks:
• Herring Motor, from Somerset, Pennsylvania,
had three beautiful, bright red 1994 and 1995
models, one wrecker, and two tractors that
still looked like new.
• D. P. Miller and wife (bottom right photo)
brought their 1975 cab-over; they also had
their little three-legged dog with them, who
was doing great and seemed to be enjoying
himself.
• A rare set-back front axle Marmon from
the 1990s was brought by Reamstown
Excavating.
• Dan Magness, from White Hall, Maryland,
brought his 1981 10-wheeler flatbed with a
rare V- shaped grill.
• Robert Neil and his grandson came all the
way from Virginia with his beautiful 1987 pure
white Marmon with a long walk-in sleeper.
There were also two beautiful Marmon model
trucks on display, owned by the Sauder family,
the owners of the former Dutchman’s Truck
Service.

This year’s show will again be held at the
Weaver’s Market parking lot, 2590 N.

Pass Lake Chapel Banquet and Dedication

t was a weekend to remember! After two years of praying and planning and a cross-country move for Janet and
myself, on April 11th this year the Passport Chapel at the Pass Lake Travel Center was dedicated and the local
ministry held its first
annual Fund Raiser Banquet.
I
Ninety-four people attended
the banquet, about thirty
more than we expected, and
so encouraging, considering
that the chapel had been on
site for less than six months.
It was held at the Italian
Cultural Center in Thunder
Bay, Ontario. A dinner of
spaghetti and meatballs was
an instant smash hit! We had
eleven tables sponsored,
which was two more than
was expected. Everyone was
so excited at the turnout!

Doris High from the TFC International Office in Pennsylvania. Cerwin leads the team that builds the TFC chapels, and they
do such a great job! He and Doris delivered the chapel to Pass Lake last October.
Dennis, Cerwin, Pastor David Kimball, and Charlie Wilson took part in the program, as did I. The Shaver Music
Company from Thunder Bay did a wonderful job entertaining us with worship music. We were asked by many people to be sure to invite them
back next year.
The chapel dedication took
place the next afternoon. We
had no idea how many people
would attend, and once again
had a huge surprise, as twentyeight people showed up.

service; and then we went outside to pray for the ministry.
They also prayed for Janet and

God work through His people in

After supper we walked
outside toward the chapel as
Doris followed us taking
pictures. We then had to say
“so long” to our wonderful
friends Doris and Cerwin,
and to Dennis as he flew out
the next day, heading for
meetings in Calgary.
Thinking over the Lord’s
blessings, we can only echo
the words of the Psalmist:
After the service inside the chapel, the group
gathered outside for the dedication prayer.
“The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled
with joy” (Psalm 126:3). i

More True Stories of God’s Amazing Grace
From the logs of the Solid Rock Chapel (Denver, CO)
f We met Kevin in the truck stop as we were inviting drivers to the 11:00 AM service. When we got to the chapel,
he was waiting on us. At the end of the service, Kevin shared a testimony about his mother passing away and him
seeing an angel in the room, which convinced him that there was an afterlife, he said. So we asked him, “Since you
are sure your mom is in Heaven, are you sure that you will be there when you pass away?” His answer was, “No.”
We then shared the Gospel with him and Kevin prayed to receive Jesus as his Lord and Savior!!
f Steven came in with some questions from the First Steps Bible study book he was working on. We had a good time
working out the answers. After a time of fellowship and prayer he left happy.
f H. came in for the evening service and we had a wonderful time exploring the Bible and what it all means. He is
an ex-Muslim and is now an avid Christian. What a blessing he was tonight.
f Rick stopped to let us know that God has healed his daughter of lung cancer and the Doctor said he didn’t know
how “The chemo and radiation treatments don’t usually remove it,” he said, “but it's completely gone!” Rick was
thanking the Lord for answered prayer!
f Victor came in not knowing why; he just felt drawn to the chapel. After a short conversation, I asked if he knew
where he would spend eternity; he said he didn’t know. Then I asked if he would like for me to explain how he could
know for sure and he said he would like that very much. After hearing the Gospel, he prayed to accept Jesus Christ
as his Savior.
f Donald, who was here on Thanksgiving Day and had good talks with a couple of chaplains, came in to let us know
that he really appreciates us and our ministry.
f JD came in and asked for prayer about changing jobs and child support, which led to a two-hour talk before prayer
for God to guide him through this time and that he would trust God to work out the details.
f There were some very good and lengthy conversations with drivers out on the lot. One of them needed encouragement to stay in the Word. Another driver gave testimony of joy in the Lord and following Him.
f Salvador was riding with his dad, who had accepted Christ about a year ago and was excited about reading the
Bible. They came in for the service and as I started to present the message, the Lord prompted me to ask how many
would use the terms “saved” or “born again” to described themselves. All but Salvado raised their hands. When I
asked them if they would like for me to explain what those terms meant and how one could be saved or born again,
they all agreed. After hearing the presentation, Salvador said he wanted to receive Christ. He prayed right then and
now is born again, just like his dad!
f Austin was delayed in being able to deliver his load so he had to spend the night. As he came out of the truck stop
after eating dinner, he saw the sign on the door about a Bible Study. He thought, “I might as well,” and came saying
he did not know for sure that he was saved. After the study on spiritual growth, we explained that before a person can
start growing he or she needs to accept Christ as personal Savior. After hearing the Gospel, Austin prayed to receive
Christ.

~ Drivers Wellness Focus: Preventive Health ~
There is a “Health Awareness Month” for a multitude of issues, when health professionals bring to our attention
information and advice to help improve and maintain our health and wellness. Here are two important ones to
consider for August.
August is National Immunization Awareness Month
All adults need a tetanus booster every ten years.
Tetanus, also called lock jaw, is a bacterial infection that
can cause severe muscle spasms and death. The combined tetanus/Tdap vaccine also protects against diphtheria, a bacterial disease that
causes swollen neck and lymph
glands, and pertussis, a highly contagious bacterial disease referred to as the 100day cough. This preventive
vaccine is important not only
for you but also to protect any
children you may be around.
Shingles vaccine protects against a very painful viral
condition that is related to chicken pox. You’ve probably
seen the commercials on TV and yes, not only is shingles
a very painful rash that can last up to four weeks, the neuralgia (nerve pain) associated with the virus can last for
months.
Getting an annual flu shot can help protect you and those
you may come into contact with from developing a nasty
virus that may last up to four weeks. This is not a cold or
other virus that may make you ill for a few days. The flu
can incapacitate you for several weeks with fever and
severe muscle aches, as well as the potential to develop
secondary infections.
Pneumococcal vaccine can help prevent pneumonia, an
infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs,
resulting in cough, phlegm, fever, chills, and difficulty
breathing. The new vaccines contain protection against
multiple strains of pneumonia, and usually one dose is
sufficient to last for years.
To find out which vaccines you may need as an adult, go
to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website (www2.cdc.gov) and complete their quiz (enter “vaccine quiz” in the search field). The quiz is very easy; for
instance, the author completed the quiz in two minutes
and found that recommended vaccines are 1) seasonal flu
vaccine; 2) Tdap vaccine for tetanus, diphtheria and per18
tussis; and 3) a Zoster (shingles) vaccine, as I am over
age 60 and have had chicken pox.
That site also has a chart that shows what vaccines adults
need, as well as how many doses based on age. In the
site’s search field, enter “adult immunization schedule”
and it will give you a PDF document you can print. And,
of course, you can always ask your doctor.
August is also National Medic Alert Month
Do you have any physical conditions that would need to
be known if you required medical attention and were
incapable of speaking?
• Diabetes?
• Severe allergies to medicines, foods, bee stings, etc.
(severe allergy means that your body can go into anaphylactic shock if you come into contact with a particular item)?
• Seizures? Heart conditions? Blood thinners? Epilepsy?
Pacemaker? COPD?
• Any medical condition that would be helpful to a paramedic or person rendering aid if you are unable to speak?
If so, it is strongly advised that you wear a bracelet or
necklace with your condition noted so that you can
receive faster, more
accurate medical
treatment.

Whose Voice Has Your Attention?
heard about a driver recently who dreamed he was a
muffler. When he woke up he was exhausted. Maybe
that has not been your dream (or nightmare), but
somehow your life has felt like it’s been running on
fumes. Your gauge has been on empty and you wonder
how you are still going.
I
The world seems to be driving itself to the point of
exhaustion. Hatred, greed, envy, disease, and natural disasters are bringing a sense of hopelessness to many.
There has always been a rising and falling of men who
wished and attempted to rule the world at any cost.
Unlike nations ruled by despots, the United States of
America established itself upon principles which brought
order, strength, and stability to its people. In the past,
when evil has attempted to raise its head, it has not been
allowed to prevail because our laws, established on certain principles, have been used to govern it. Sadly, the
victory over evil can diminish if the importance of those
principles is diminished. Those changeless principles
originate in God Himself. Today a battle wages in our
land fueled by the philosophy, “There is no right or
wrong.”
Unless all mankind acknowledges God-ordained principles, there will be conflict. Logic and common sense do
not exist in the mind that sets itself against God and His
wisdom. Men and women have always wanted to be their
own gods. It is possible to become frustrated with those
fighting for such things as pornography, same sex marriage, abortion, or homosexuality. The frustration is born
out of love for the people whose lives are deceived by
Satan; not intolerance.
To acknowledge Jesus means people have to deal with
their sin. The hardness of their hearts causes them to
deny His existence and the sin in their hearts. If they cannot deny His existence, they will attempt to discredit His
claim to be the Son of God, Savior of the world.
Hearts not willing to be changed by repenting and
acknowledging Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will be
judged by God Himself in His time. Many would say this
is being intolerant. When we think of freedom, it seldom
occurs to us that the essence of freedom rests inside us.
We wrestle against crime and create laws to govern, yet
deny the only source of help—a changed heart that
comes only through Jesus Christ.
Driver, how long have you been listening to the wrong
voice? Jesus tells us in John 10:10, “The thief (Satan)
comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that
they may have life, and have it to the full (abundantly).”
He tells us he is the Good Shepherd and lays down his
life for the sheep. Isn’t that true freedom?
Sin and evil will always be with us until Jesus returns,
and our spirit becomes exhausted by sin’s presence. But
God gives us His answer found in the Bible, in Isaiah
40:29-31, “He gives strength to the weary and increases
the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and
weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who
hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will
soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow
weary, they will walk and not be faint.” i
But it is the conflict Christians have been promised. For
Jesus Himself said, as written in Matthew 10:34, “Do not
suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did
not come to bring peace, but a sword.” Jesus is doing battle for the hearts of men and women, redeeming them
from the eternal death brought by sin, while Satan, the
destroyer and liar, deceives the multitudes.

road but I feel I’m in the way of other drivers.”
“Yeah, Hog, I hear you,” said Green Onion. “I
used to sing, ‘On the road again, singing through my
nose again, counting my toes again’ and then I’d put on
a red bandanna like Willie Nelson and face the day. Now
I’m discombobulated about being too old to work and too
poor to quit.”

David, the shepherd boy, killed a lion, a bear, and anything else that threatened to harm his sheep. He stood up
to the nine-foot giant Goliath with only a sling and five
smooth stones in his shepherd’s bag. He was able to stand
there with such confidence and courage because he knew
that he served an Almighty God. So in that crisis of war
in Israel, David could boldly say to the giant, “You come
against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come
against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God
of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied” (1 Samuel
17:45). Then David ran enthusiastically to destroy the
enemy in combat. He sank a small smooth stone (a guided missile of the Lord) by his sling into the giant's forehead, and Goliath fell face down. David removed
Goliath’s head with the giant’s own sword.
Years later, when David was the king of Israel and his
men were in the thick of battle, David became weak and
exhausted. Ishbi-Benob was a descendant of the giants
(Rephaites) and he threatened to kill David, but Abishai
came to David's rescue and killed the giant, saving King
David's life. After that David's men declared, "You are
not going out to battle again! Why should we risk snuffing out the light of Israel?" (2 Samuel 21:17 NLT).

roads and the best places to eat and sleep on the longhaul. Well I have news for you. God and your company
already have somebody in training to replace you!
Elijah was a man just like us and thought he was the only
true, vital, pure prophet left in Israel. He called fire from
heaven and killed all the false prophets of Baal.
Afterward he ran for miles before King Ahab's chariot
until Queen Jezebel put a contract on his life to kill him.
Now Elijah ran for his life and prayed that he might die.
He felt expendable and non-essential for any more service for the Lord. After a long sleep, God fed him and gave
him strength to find a prepared, godly replacement.
Elisha, who became Elijah's servant and friend, was
God's chosen successor to Elijah when Elijah went up
into heaven in a fiery chariot. Elisha got a double portion
of Elijah's spirit and did twice as many miracles as Elijah
had done. (1 Kings 17 – 2 Kings 2:12).
God still had lots of work, ministry and encouragement
for David, Elijah, Elisha, Peter, and Paul to do before
they were taken home to be with the Lord. Until our time
to go home, we need to trust the Lord to give us wisdom
for this stage of life. Remember God's promise: “I created you and have cared for you since before you were
born. I will be your God throughout your lifetime – until
your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care
for you. I will carry you along and save you” (Isaiah
46:3-4 NLT). i
There comes a time in all our lives when we have to hang
up our sword like David did and pray for God's new
direction in our lives. Or maybe you are just discombobulated, going through a time of confusion, disoriented,
sickened inside by life and the news, unsettled, distressed, and worried at times. We worry about whether

righteous, not even one ... for all have sinned and fall short
of the glory of God’” (Romans 3:10, 23).
