The Sports and Recreation department, located within the WRC, is your place to go and register for your favorite activity. Maybe you have a particular interest in soccer, rugby or Tai Chi. Or maybe you like to play tennis, skate, or even just lounge around at the pool. Whatever your interest, the staff at the Sports and Recreation department will be more than happy to get you on your way to fulfilling your physical fitness needs. In our best efforts to make your activities registration process the best that it can be, you will now be able to register on-line for almost all of the programmes we offer. Please be sure to read all of the important information in regard to programme registration in this booklet, as it contains the detailed process to prepare yourself for on-line registration. We hope that you will find the right activity or combination of activities in this booklet to help make your spring and summer a healthy and happy one. David Lapointe Director of Sports and Recreation MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LIBRARY AND COMMUNITY SERVICES I n the interest of providing a greater range of activities and events for people of all ages and tastes, Westmount’s Community Events Division and the Library have recently joined forces under a single umbrella. In this spring and summer 2015 guide, you will find a whole new set of cultural and community activities that we hope will both pique your interest and entice you to be active in the dynamic cultural and community life in Westmount. Most of Westmount’s community and cultural events take place in Victoria Hall or in the Library. From 1899 onwards, generations of Westmounters have passed through the doors of these two historic buildings to attend concerts, exhibitions, workshops and theatre events, not to mention a host of other municipal activities. In addition, visitors can now enjoy a number of public exhibitions of works by local artists in the Gallery space, which links Victoria Hall to the Library via the Conservatory. I would like to take this opportunity to extend a personal invitation to you to visit the Library and discover – or perhaps rediscover – its myriad services and events, including author readings, story hour, the summer reading club for children and the lecture series, as well as our free e-Book lending service. The beauty of our collections and the space that houses them, as well as our quality of service, are part of what makes this century-old library one of Westmount’s heritage gems. This year's theme focuses on PlAy! For the summer of 2015, we’re encouraging kids to see reading as play, and discover that the joyful, boundless and carefree feelings associated with play can just as easily be found in a great book. Throughout the summer months, the Children's Department will host a number of events to inspire kids to read. Ask for your Summer Reading Club Kit at the Children's Desk this summer - you'll earn great prizes! (Starts June 8, 2015) Have you ever dreamt of becoming a princess or an astronaut? Maybe you see yourself as a famous writer, or scientist. Have you dreamt about changing the world or making a difference in one person’s life? Do you dream about meeting new faces or going to faraway places? No matter our age, we all have dreams or aspirations, and so, this year, we would like you to write about “Chasing a Dream”. what do you dream about becoming or doing? • are your dreams based on fact or fancy • will your dreams come true Imagine another person’s dreams. think about: • a friend • a family member • a stranger from a different place or time why do we dream? • to imagine our future • to give a sense of purpose who can help us reach our dream? • rely on yourself • family/friends/teachers • a mentor or a hero • someone who has already achieved their own dream How do we chase a dream? • set clear goals • find someone to guide you • overcome obstacles – it may not always be easy • don’t be afraid • and don’t give up! use your imagination! Be creative and remember, as always, to write about the theme in the context of community. Think of community not just as a town or neighbourhood, but as friends, family, teams, clubs, schools, libraries, work-places, places of worship, social movements, people living in different cultures, or others sharing our planet! You are welcome to write a story, poem, or an essay. What you write is up to you; the aim is to be creative! deadline: Friday, April 10, 2015. For more information please consult the McEntyre brochure available at the Children’s Desk or at www.westlib.org. Volunteer Judges needed With over 1300 entries, the McEntyre Writing Competition needs volunteer judges to evaluate entries. ACTIVITIES FOR YOUTH mcentyre writing Competion 2015 If you are interested in being part of a judging team, please contact Wendy Wayling, Children’s librarian, at 514 989-5357 or by e-mail at [email protected]. who was Peter mcentyre? Peter McEntyre was the mayor of the City of Westmount from 1969 to 1971. He set up a trust fund to support an annual writing competition to encourage young people to think about the idea of community, and to learn more about their own communities. 23 VOLUNTEERING IN WESTMOUNT Over the years, the key to success of Westmount’s culture, sports and recreation programmes has been the involvement of keen volunteers from the community. Westmount is indeed fortunate to have residents who willingly give their time and expertise to help provide quality programmes and services, but there is never a shortage of tasks for new volunteers. For example, we are always looking for: • coaches for various sports teams; • referees and time-keepers for sports programmes; • new members for the Friends of the Library group; • volunteers to help at various community events such as Winter Carnival and Family Day. These are but four of a wide range of activities where volunteers are essential. If the notion of getting involved in these or other programmes is of interest to you, we invite you to call the Sports and Recreation office (514 989-5389), the Westmount Library (514 989-5429) or the Community Events office (514 989-5226) for additional information. COMMUNITY EVENTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CEAC) Bringing together councillors, staff and residents, Westmount’s Community Events Advisory Committee is a valuable resource for city administrators. Its role is to assist in the planning of community events, taking into account the varied and changing interests of all sectors of the community. For information about participating in the CEAC, please contact Councillor Nicole Forbes, Commissioner of Cultural Events, at 514 989-5076. PUBLIC LIBRARY COMMITTEE The Public Library Committee is made up of five residents of Westmount: three appointed by Council from the community at large and two councillors. The Committee meets monthly to discuss Library issues and ensures that the Library maintains its intellectual freedom and independence. Community members are appointed for a three-year term. For information about participating in the Public Library Committee, please contact Councillor Nicole Forbes, Commissioner of Cultural Events, at 514 989-5076.
