‘A jubilant polyrhythmic party of percussion, electric guitars, and Diabaté’s
21-stringed instrument showering notes like a musical waterfall.’ - The Village Voice
TOUMANI DIABATÉ
Channelling equal parts Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix
and ancient griot tradition (hereditary musician),
Toumani Diabaté is credited with bringing the
sounds of the kora - a traditional West African
21-string harp - to audiences around the world.
Celebrated as one of Africa’s most gifted musicians,
Grammy award-winning Diabaté has collaborated
across the musical spectrum with artists including
jazz trombonist and composer Roswell Rudd, blues
legend Taj Mahal, singer-songwriter/producer
Damon Albarn and Icelandic pop icon Björk.
SYMMETRIC ORCHESTRA
Toumani Diabaté’s Symmetric Orchestra is an
institution in Mali. Composed of musicians who fuse
tradition and innovation, they play a mix of West
African instruments including the kora, djembe,
balafon and bolombatto alongside guitars and drums.
JALI BUBA KUYATEH
Master kora player Jali Buba is part of the famous
griot family Kuyateh of Medina Wandifa. He has
been playing kora since the age of ten and is
well known for applying his mastery to a range of
traditional and contemporary styles such as reggae,
salsa, jazz and blues. He is now living in Australia
and will be joined by a band of local performers to
support Toumani Diabate`s Symmetric Orchestra.
