With News, Notes, Anecdotes,
Stats And Trivia
The season is just starting to swing into high gear, but it’s
never too early to talk about the GMC Tournament.
This year’s event will have a new twist as ‘Super Sunday,’
always a staple at Middlesex County College, will be held at
New Brunswick High School.
Nothing against New Brunswick High, but MCC was the perfect
venue to watch four games all day with plenty of room to move
about and watch the games from every corner and every angle.
So we’ll see how the new venue works out.
The semifinals will move from MCC to South Brunswick High with
the championship game still waiting the approval from Rutgers.
Securing the date for the final at Rutgers has always been an
issue because of availability. Here’s to hoping the site
remains at RU because in my opinion, that is one of the main
reasons the Middlesex County/GMC Tournament is the classiest
county tournament in the entire state and I have witnessed
them all during my long career as a local and statewide
writer.
The Middlesex County/GMC Tournament championship has been
played on the Rutgers campus ever since the 1969-70 season.
When the tournament began in 1964-65, the final game was
played at Woodbridge High School up until the 1968-69 title
game when Colonia beat South River at WHS before a sold-out
gym, 80-62, as CHS’s first 1,000-point scorer Craig Frank
dropped in 31.
The title game would be sold-out long before the game would
begin.
A long line would be formed all along that corridor leading up
the entrance of the Woodbridge gym as people would be turned
away.
Then, in 1969-70, the game was moved to the Rutgers University
gym affectionately known as ‘The Barn’ located on College Ave.
in New Brunswick.
Bruce Carey’s jumper near the final horn provided the packed
house with a thrill as Perth Amboy knocked off New Brunswick,
62-60.
In 1970-71, I was in the house as a 12-year-old watching my
brother and Metuchen shock future NBA first-round draft pick
Gary Brokaw and New Brunswick, 83-78. Brokaw scored 46.
The final game was played at ‘The Barn’ up until 1978-79 when
it moved to the brand new Rutgers Athletic Center,
affectionately known as ‘The RAC.’
When the games were played at ‘The Barn’ the JV boys final
would be played before the varsity boys final.
When the venue moved from the Rutgers College campus to the
Livingston campus at ‘The RAC,’ the girls varsity would play
before the boys in the title game. It has been that way ever
since.
Up until the early to mid-2000’s, the semifinals and finals
for the boys and girls were both played at ‘The RAC.’
Keith Hughes
Who can ever forget the first year when the GMC was formed in
1985-86 when Keith Hughes of Carteret and Lunearl ‘Earl’
Summers put on a show before 5,500 in the final game at The
RAC with the Ramblers winning 69-67. Hughes dropped in a cool
40, Earl had 28. I thought the roof was going to come off the
place that night.
How about 1989-90 when Ray Mulero of Kennedy was fouled with
no time left on the clock and drained two foul shots to
complete an improbable comeback against Perth Amboy, 54-53.
Okay let me stop because I could go on all day. I have been to
every county final since 1979-80, another classic when Mike
Payne pumped in 33 as Colonia beat Amboy in OT, 64-62.

thriving with a combined record of 13-5.
Competing against each other in the Red Division, the
Brunswick’s have spent the early part of the season beating

TEACHER/PUPIL
Andrew Hill
Chris Chiera
When Colonia head coach Chris Chiera walked into the Kennedy
gym on Monday nigh, he saw a sight he had never seen before –
Andrew Hill in green.
When Chiera took over as head coach from Ken Pace at Colonia
in 2005, he has only had one hire – Hill, a heady point guard
at Carteret back in the day who wanted to get into the
coaching ranks.
Hill remained on Chiera’s bench for eight seasons before
taking the Kennedy job this year and was instrumental in the
school winning 128 games during his stay.
“I knew he was ready to become a head coach about four or five
years ago,’’ said Chiera, whose team bested Hill’s, 57-40. “I
would ask him his for advice on the bench, what he thought
about this or that. And he would give it to me even if he
didn’t agree with me. He was always thinking like a head
coach, so I knew he was ready and I couldn’t be happier for
him.’’
Chiera admitted it was strange at first.
“It was strange not seeing him on my bench this season,’’ said
Chiera. “But walking into the gym and seeing him in green was
strange. I busted his chops about his hair cut, which he has
since changed, I rubbed his head and then it was time to play.
He will do a great job over there.’’
STREAKING FALCONS
St. Joseph has won 20 straight GMC Red Division games and 30
straight games against GMC competition.
St. Joseph has won 20 straight GMC Tournament games and is
26-2 in its last 28 GMCT games.
St. Joseph is 16-2 in its last 18 state games with six in a
row.

SCRIMMAGE VS. J.P. STEVENS:
COACH’S COMMENTS:
TEAM STRENGTHS: “Athleticism, experience, speed, depth.”
TEAM WEAKNESSES: “Bench is very young with limited experience
on a varsity level. Will take time to learn the system and
develop into solid role players.”
OUTLOOK: “With a solid nucleus coming back we should have
improvement with our cohesion this year. Scoring shouldn’t be
much of an issue with potentially two 1,000 point scorers on
the team. Solid play within the interior (rebounding) will be
crucial. If we can defend at a high level we should at least
compete for the division and hopefully go farther in the
county’s and state’s (North Jersey Section 2 Group 3).”
GOALS: “To Compete and defend at a high level every game.
Continue to build on the fundamentals as the season grows.
Focus on the details to become a strong tournament team.”
