This work is not to be clever, Preach, convert or mould. It’s a way of stringing words and pointing To the truth that can’t be told. So I bow to the all the enlightened ones, And humbly offer this story. May all beings be guided homeward, Embracing their destined glory. 4|Page Lovegroover ® (The Groover Sutra) BY Sahaja Makashi 5|Page A man stood still beside a city street, And watched the confusion and disarray. He could see that he was lost in it too, But he knew no other way. He went along with culture and media, Like everyone else seemed to do, But an indefinable longing disturbed his mind, Carving a deeper and deeper groove. Fear and repression had overtaken him, Though he pretended to remain aloof. He reminisced about the feeling of joyous abandon That had pervaded him as a youth. He could see others were struggling and hurting, Trapped in worlds they had designed. “If I don’t know how to free myself,” he thought, “How can I help mankind?” Sadly he wiped away a tear, And wondered whether it was just too late, To turn against this entrenched way of living, And reclaim a happier state. 6|Page All this guy wanted was happiness. The search for it brought only pain. He thought working harder would solve the problem, But the results were still the same. No matter what he did, There was always more to do. To please others or himself was an endless job, Because there was always something new. Constant barrages of external stimuli, As well as bombardment by the brain. His thinking mind was overwhelming, And it was driving him insane. 7|Page To be human is to know this suffering, He knew that for sure. But why was it happening, And could there be a cure? 8|Page “Surely,” he thought, the answer started with him, Because there were always two voices in his head. One of them talked about the past incessantly, The other talked about the future instead. So the man decided to end this chattering, And used a variety of means, To try and release himself from this madness, However they just added to his disease. Sex and drugs worked temporarily, And were quite a lot of fun. Drinking and gambling offered no contentment, And he soon found himself back at square one. So he stood on his head, He did not eat. He did not lie down, He did not sleep. This guy ran until he fell over, Then flipped, rolled and hopped. He engaged in every activity to his physical limit, But these voices would not stop. 9|Page In exhaustion the man sat down Under a giant old tree. His mind became more quiet and peaceful, And the expression on his face, serene. He vowed to sit there, And not to move, Until he’d found a remedy for this fever, That all his antics had failed to soothe. “Acquisition and activity cannot quench The longings of my heart. The architect of my psychosis is this insatiable mind.” He had a place to start. His body stiffened as he sat there, It itched and prickled and pained. “Now I’m not even moving,” he lamented, “And the suffering still remains.” Being tormented by the mind and body, Had brought him to the brink, But in the depths of this misery a lightning bolt struck, And he understood the missing link: 10 | P a g e “Interaction with the world causes bodily sensations. Reacting to them grooves the mind!” This was the nucleus of every disturbance, And he used this awareness as a guide. When a sensation was pleasant, he wanted more, If unpleasant, he wanted it gone. At the very base level, craving and aversion were ruling, And helplessly he was being carried along. Watching this changing phenomenon within himself, From one moment to the next, He objectively overruled reaction and judgment, And began cooling their volcanic effect. Clearly the ignorance of why it was happening, Had been the most destructive groove. So with love the crevices of delusion were patiently filled, And even deep canyons smoothed. Sheer perseverance had bestowed the insight Of suffering’s deepest cause. Lovegroover emerged spontaneously as a result Of apprehending these natural laws. 11 | P a g e People would walk past and stare at him, Because he had gone slightly wild. ‘Have a bath hippie,’ someone shouted. Lovegroover only smiled. Some teenagers sniggered, ‘What a bum and a loser,’ But nothing could faze That intrepid Lovegroover. Children and animals came to play around him, Some people brought him fruit to eat. The days were hot and the nights were cold, Still he did not move from his seat. 12 | P a g e When Lovegroover attached to a thought, He found it would stay. And discovered if he had no reaction, It would just dissolve away. He saw that all thoughts had come from nowhere, Whether memories or anticipation. To nowhere they returned without any reality, It was just imagination! He winced in horror at what he’d done in the past, In hatred and in greed, To help perpetuate the lie Of whom he thought himself to be. Lovegroover’s mind had been a jailer, A torturer and a curse. To be a fraudulent something was misery, But the thought of being nothing was worse. 13 | P a g e In moments when all thought subsided, Peace seemed everywhere. Consistently he brought himself back to that ground, Silent, calm and aware. Some thoughts had been more persistent than others, And even these eventually passed. Stillness reigned in Lovegroover’s mind. The door to freedom had opened at last. In that darkness so desolate, That emptiness so void, All vestiges of ignorance Were finally destroyed. A torrent of love began engulfing him, From a cosmic river deep and wide. Saturating him so completely, That even death could not survive. 14 | P a g e He was nothing that could be pointed to, Beyond anything that could be contained. Formless and encompassing were hints at an identity, If indeed one still remained. Without concepts of past or future, His ego totally resigned, Into an endless moment, so perfect and beautiful, That had been there all the time. There was nothing left to do, His boat had made the other shore. All his questions had been eradicated, And he wondered why no more. Lovegroover smiled and bowed in reverence, To the powers that lay beyond. The love from nature that guided him, Was really him all along. 15 | P a g e There was just the morning star, Blossoms falling in the breeze, Dawn breaking over the horizon, And Lovegroover under the tree. Calmly abiding with nature. The supreme reality. A clear, compassionate wisdom, Embracing totality. If he talked about what he had realized, Would anyone understand what he meant? Seers of the past encountered the same dilemma, Still, he resolved to make an attempt. 16 | P a g e Before he could move, a woman came, And sat at Lovegroover’s feet. She was very upset, Tears rolled down her cheeks. ‘Lovegroover, I want to be happy,’ she sobbed, ‘The beauty of youth to never age. I never want my family to be sick or suffer, And have wealth that does not fade.’ Lovegroover smiled In a curious fashion. Patiently he listened, Full of compassion. 17 | P a g e For a while Lovegroover sat motionless, With empathy twinkling in his eyes. Then straight from the heart, words began resonating, To his own complete surprise: “Attachment to these thoughts Brings the anguish to your mind. Seeing clearly that all worldly things change, Will free you every time. You are clinging to objects that are transient, Craving for conditions that pass away. Overlooking the eternal part in you Is blinding you from the way. Dispel the darkness, By allowing this spark of light. Turn your attention within,” he smiled, “And trust nature to put it right.” 18 | P a g e “All your distress can be extinguished, You need not even doubt it. If you really wish to end your tears, Here is one way to go about it: When desire comes to tempt you, With awareness keep the mind at bay. When hatred comes to see you, With love send it away. As illusion comes to delude you, Smile and give it no attention. Laugh at the amazing tricks of the mind, And see them as your own invention. Every moment use this umbrella, To shelter yourself from rain. Eventually all the clouds will pass, And only clear sky shall remain.” 19 | P a g e Before long people came from everywhere, Just to be in his presence. Lovegroover told them wonderful stories, And pointed to their innermost essence. “Just behave yourself, And do what is good. This is the heart Of Grooverhood. Everything happens naturally By purifying the mind. It’s all a matter of endeavor, Patiently and rightly applied. This is what you’re here for, And it’s all you have to do. All the love in the universe Is not apart from you.” 20 | P a g e “Make a lamp of yourself for others, Become a serving angel of all. Selflessly invest time and energy Following natural laws. We have lost touch with nature, And at the same time our own. Stop, breathe and smile from your heart, This will bring the mind back home. Refrain from hurting anyone or anything, Cease clouding the mind. Being unconcerned for the way of the worldly Will make you groovy all the time.” 21 | P a g e “Whatever thoughts and beliefs you’ve accepted, Without any investigation, Leave you unknowingly caught between pleasure and pain, And keep you revolving in frustration. If you wish to know why you’re suffering, Locate these attachments of the mind. It may not be a pretty picture to start with, But this inquiry works every time. If you don’t understand how the mind is working, You won’t even know you’re in prison! Awaken to this crucial point, With awareness and precision.” 22 | P a g e “People who seem to live a groovy life, Are also bound in this worldly game. Suffering is common to everyone, And so the remedy will be the same. Through countless ages we’ve been tormented, Without ever questioning why. So much needless hardship, created and endured, Now we all can turn the tide.” 23 | P a g e Whether a king or a beggar, His teaching was never reserved. Lovegroover’s only query to himself was: “How will I love and serve?” He showed everyone a breathing practice, And how to understand the peace he’d found. Lovegroover discussed some steps to be taken, As people sat amongst him on the ground. “Patiently watch what you are doing, Observe the natural breath. Treat sensations of the body with equanimity, And nature will do the rest. Keep returning to the ground of being, The part of you that’s always aware. It’s silent and subtle, but you’ll know it instantly, By the bliss of it when you’re there. The simple is sometimes hard to believe, We’re so used to the complicated. This is a practice in which all succeed, Because your existence cannot be debated.” 24 | P a g e “Through attachment to the body you concoct personality. Its’ source is the mental notion of ‘I’. Mistakenly you believe this is who you are, ‘Yo! This is me, and this is mine!’ Experience the relationship of body and mind, Learn to release their intimate bond. Then whatever arises, you will have your own insight, To go through, around, beyond. Nothing is yours, it’s nature’s, What you are is already free. The awareness of just being is bliss. Meditation is the key.” 25 | P a g e “My words are only pointers,” he added, With a beaming, childlike grin. “You have to embark on your own adventure, For the timeless source within. Remember I am always with you, And you will never feel alone. This is the only journey worth going on, Because it’s the one that takes you home. All your lifetimes of exploration, Of thinking, acting and chasing, Will be lost in a peace unfathomable, And a love so all-embracing. Such are the laws of nature, And they are not separate from you. By casting aside all that is false, You are bound to see what’s true.” 26 | P a g e Through direct experience backed, By an unconditional guarantee, The vigilant ones retraced their steps To joyous immortality. Lovegroover pointed everyone home, Until the end of his earthly days: “Grooving love isn’t anything special, It’s just the natural way.” How can gratitude be more adequately shown, What happiness can be greater? Than for you to rest eternally now, In the endless love of nature. 27 | P a g e 28 | P a g e The Sutras Of Joyous Abandon (The Sayings of Lovegroover) BY Sahaja Makashi 29 | P a g e If you did not exist, The universe could not possibly be. Before anything under heaven, you are. This understanding will set you free. ____________________________________ If you believe you are this body-mind, Then something has gone wrong. This moment, sense your own existence, Here is the door beyond. ______________________________________ I make everything beautiful, I make everything real. Then I make all my own suffering! Aha! The truth revealed. ______________________________________ Motivated by base desires, Intoxicated by the primal dance, To do, to have, to become, You do not stand a chance. __________________________________________ To realize you’re here is a miracle in itself, With that, half the work is done. Now groove past the dividing mind To see everything as one. ______________________________________ All that can be conceived Is a mirror-like reflection, Of the expansive power to manifest Out of total subjection. ______________________________________ 30 | P a g e Everything that was, Everything that will be, Are lost in this loving moment. Awareness is the key. _______________________________________ The priceless understanding, Always given for free. The ancient habit of identification, Lost irretrievably. _____________________________________ This is all I had to do, And all I had to see. The vastness of the universe Is not apart from me. __________________________________________ So much wasted energy, So much wasted time. Go beyond your body first, Then go beyond the mind. ___________________________________________ Beyond the body, Beyond the mind, All sensations overcome, All illusions pacified. _________________________________________ A reason to go beyond the mind cannot be understood, Until its’ hold is clearly seen. Constantly remembering to redirect your attention Reveals the waking drama as a dream. ____________________________________________ 31 | P a g e What is beyond the senses? What is beyond the mind? Oh, it’s you! And you’ve been there all the time. ___________________________________________ Stand back and watch That which resides, And That which stands alone. Unimpeded, uninhibited, Relax, you’re already at home. _____________________________________________ Holding any thought is bondage, Surrender and let them go. Just be the silent observer Of this ephemeral show. ____________________________________ I was never born, I will never die. The pure awareness, immutable, Transcending space and time. ______________________________________ All you ever see is you, In stillness and silence it dawns. To wake, dream and sleep In heavenly peace. ___________________________________________ Closer than a thought, Both external and internal. The one existence, all pervading, Ancient and eternal. ____________________________________________ There is nothing new to be gained, Only ignorance must be removed. Investigate; you are not a person, This is the way to groove. _________________________________________ Universally you reside, This body is nature’s own. There are no other persons, This world is not your home. _________________________________________ Nothing can touch your core, No matter what the event. You are pure spirit, harmonic awareness, A billion, trillion percent. ________________________________________ All you wish to find, All you want to see, Everything you are, Is not apart from me. _____________________________________ 34 | P a g e Discard all beliefs, And patiently start again. There was no personality to begin with, There won’t be one in the end. ______________________________________ Egos are conditioned illusions, And on investigation are tamed. All form may be different, But consciousness, one and the same. _____________________________________ Deceived by appearances, You don’t apprehend your natural state. See unity in diversity, Subtle yet innate. __________________________________ You are always looking outside For the happiness found only within. There cannot be renewal without total destruction. With nothing you are filled to the brim. ___________________________________ Not the old, Not the new. This is your only duty, And all you have to do. _______________________________________ 35 | P a g e You are everything, You are everywhere, Absolutely limitless, Immovable, embracing, aware. _________________________________ The unadorned, the constant, Right before our eyes. And although there is no signal, Boldly recognize. ____________________________________________ You don’t have to do anything, No-one’s keeping score. You don’t have to be anyone, Or be enslaved anymore. _________________________________ Ego is a pimp, Let love be your master. I compassionately warn you, All else is disaster. _____________________________________ Desiring love will blind and bind, Then attachment will shatter. Impermanence is meant to wake you up. This is the heart of the matter. ______________________________ Do you think you can thwart your destiny With intellect, possessions and wealth? You will still be barren, What you search for is yourself. _________________________________ 36 | P a g e Causes are innumerable, Results you cannot control. Security in a transitory world? Fallacy! Just be, and behold. ____________________________________ If you know who you are, You can truly love another. Clinging is not love my friend, It’s just attachment brother. _____________________________________ Once you know the ground, You can always return. Without it you’ll continue stumbling With objects none of your concern. ____________________________________ No name, no form, no attributes, No body, no mind, no self. You are the heart of being, Nothing, nothing else. __________________________________ See all that manifests as transient, Realize how long it’s taken For you to have this opportunity. In this precious moment, awaken. _____________________________________ Go, go, go beyond, This is the sacred dharma. Beyond that is the wilderness, And the end of all the drama. _____________________________________ 37 | P a g e Disrobe and stand naked, From all that mind discerns. The next step is the wilderness, From which only a thread returns. _______________________________________ Identify with who is seeing, Rather than what is seen. Being no longer personally involved, Will wake you from the dream. __________________________ Wakeful sleep, The golden mean. The harmony and transcendence Of the seer and the seen. ________________________________________ Conflict in life will teach you There is so much to unlearn. Nothing ever happens, You have no concerns. ____________________________________ In the end you realize, That you really already knew. Seers were pointing the way all the time, You just didn’t know what was true. ____________________________________ The beckoning of the natural state, The silence of the expanse. The eloquent words can only point, For one moment take a glance. _____________________________________________ 38 | P a g e When everything is traced to its’ origin There’s nothing left to stand on. Effortlessly, peacefully, Joyously abandon. _________________________________________ You need nothing to be happy, Causes cannot make it arise. You are always blissfully dancing, But ego thinks otherwise. ________________________________________ Beyond conceptualization, Beyond all belief. The priceless understanding Is spontaneous relief. ____________________________________________ No location, Oceanic. Nowhere, everywhere, Blissfully dynamic. _______________________________________________ Looking away from the mind, Outside its’ conceptual stance. Waves of love resonate and manifest as Poetry from the expanse. ___________________________________________ Like a singer who loves to sing, And a traveller who loves to move. As a dancer loves to dance, Lovegroover just loves to groove. ________________________________________ 39 | P a g e Surrendered to the nature, A splendor for all to see. In every moment, absolutely loved, And absolutely free. 40 | P a g e You are not this or that, Not the doer or the mover. Simplicity is the supreme teacher, Love baby, Lovegroover. 41 | P a g e 42 | P a g e Lovegroover’s Blessing May all beings be happy, may all beings share the happiness. May all beings be peaceful, may all beings share the peace. May all beings be harmonious, may all beings share the harmony. May all beings be aware, may all beings share the awareness. May all beings be tranquil, may all beings share the tranquility. May all beings be compassionate, may all beings share the compassion. May all beings be loving, may all beings share the love. May all beings be free, may all beings share the freedom. With all the love in the universe. 43 | P a g e 44 | P a g e Why Lovegroover? Cultivating awareness is the most important skill you can learn in this lifetime. This innate and primary power is the key to understanding and apprehending your true nature. It is the greatest gift you can ever give yourself. With this gift you will recognize clearly that awareness and love are not different or separate; they always come or are absent together, and are the background of every thought and action. Reflect on this deeply and from every angle. You will see for yourself that awareness includes not only love, but happiness, peace, truth, compassion, fulfillment and freedom within it too. These features of wholeness are characterized by no thought and no craving. This sense is never apart from you, it’s just that the habit pattern of the mind is thinking and craving, and so these intrinsic, beautiful aspects of yourself are blurred from view. Awareness brings the clarity needed to see the spell you are under and see reality as it is. At times we don’t feel happy or loved because we are wishing or expecting it to come from outside, and when it doesn’t come, we go searching for it. In western society we are conditioned at a young age to seek love and happiness in this way. To look away from external things to bring satisfaction and redirect your attention within is a major turning point. Rest assured, it is a natural progression, and there’s no need to be frightened. This is the path of return. We are embroiled in the mental grooves of the past and these habitual ways of thinking leave us at the mercy of cause and effect, gain and loss, pleasure and pain and all the other dualisms. This is the realm of the mind. Through the filter of genes, conditioning and memory, the mind issues thoughts that constitute our phenomenal experience: the ego, the body, all the associated attachments and the destructive sense of separatism from nature and each other. 45 | P a g e Taking the mistaken identity of the body and mind to be who you are, adding the identification with experiences as happening to ‘you’ breeds this very human feeling of being limited (mortal). This is the deepest groove of all. Through constant repetition we groove this inaccuracy in memory and then attempt to understand ourselves and the world with our mistaken outlook. This constitutes the ‘bondage’ spiritual traditions talk of. The source of this ‘bondage’ is our incapacity to see how our problems are arising and the unconscious attachment to transitory aspects of manifestation. Some initial guidance in meditation to focus awareness is absolutely essential for most westerners. Unless you spend some time investigating awareness, the being you are, understanding the hold the mind has over you is unfeasible. How and why things manifest in your life will remain guess work and so an escape from your self-created turmoil will be impossible. Following a belief system will not help to uncover and dissolve the deep grooves hidden in the psyche. Some grooves take longer than others to dissolve because your attachments to some experiences, beliefs and objects can be very deep rooted. The human intellect has developed over millennia, not to integrate with a computer, but to be able to notice this power that is with you all the time, trace consciousness to its’ source and realize your true nature. Instead of continually grooving the mind with falsity, use your intelligence and discernment to investigate what the truth really is. There will be resistance from the mind in the beginning, so be prepared for it. Inevitably nature takes over and does all the work for you because love is the way of nature, and you cannot stop it. As you do investigate, naturally and without effort, you truly learn to love. Not some things and not others, this is the hallmark of attachment, but kind acceptance toward everyone and everything equally because the mental barriers of separation begin being dismantled. 46 | P a g e No one can share their understanding with you, pointing is all that can be done by any teacher. It is by your own direct experience and through your own exploration that you will be able to see the way the mind is working, intimately understand your conditioning, the process through which all phenomena arise, and ultimately who you are. As everyone’s conditioning is particular to them, so is their path out of it. This is an individual quest to dissolve individuality. Enlightenment is not something new to be acquired, it’s just removing our misconceptions using the strongest force in the universe, which in the end you will find to be nothing but yourself. This gift is innately yours already; you only have to allow it some space in your life. If you can remember to bring the mind back to the present every time it runs away into the past or the future, you are cultivating freedom (bhavana vimukti) from the mind’s habit of projecting things that are not real and then attaching to them. All the fulfillment, happiness, love, peace and freedom that for so long was mistakenly sought outside in the manifestation (thanks to the mind) is within you, just as all the masters have said since time immemorial. And so “Lovegroover” came into being spontaneously to remind me of the ground already covered. May it be a helpful reminder for you too. Some other synonyms would be Joyous Abandon, Blissful Dancer or Prema Bhavana. Lovegroover just sounded better, and to groove awareness/love in every moment of life is the practice (if any) to be cultivated. All and nothing, all at once. 47 | P a g e 48 | P a g e In due course, the commentary and compendium text of Lovegroover will be published depending on the amount of interest received for this excerpt.
