We’ve made good friends and enjoyed great rides, rallies, and conventions. We have laughed until our sides ached. We’ve been amazed to see 40+ members working and sweating, even in February, to put on the best rally of the year…(a completely impartial opinion!) We’re proud to be volunteers, alongside many of you, doing what we all can to continue to keep Chapter I one of the strongest chapters in California. We just can’t help but want everybody who sees us at a restaurant, rest stop, or rally to recognize us, not just for our great-looking wheels, but for our obvious friendship and tiger pride! Please join us for an October event—on 2, 3 or 4 wheels. The After Gathering Ride on October 12th and the Lunch Ride to Slater’s 50/50 on the 19th are great opportunities to travel together — and, of course, eat together, and at the same time show everybody who sees us that GWRRA groups ride safely and know how to have a good time. Rallies to San Luis Obispo or San Diego are also great opportunities to spread CA1-I chapter pride. CA1L San Luis Obispo October 5 Di nn After Gathering Ride Elsinore October 12 None of us have the time or can afford to attend every Chapter, District and Region event, but look ahead on our 3-month calendar and circle now the events you can come to. They’re just not the same without you! In our minds, every year Chapter I is absolutely the “Chapter of the Year”. The more we ride together, the more everybody will be able to see that, too. Lunch Ride Anaheim October 19 George and Norma CA1F San Diego October 26 See Page 9 for all the group ride details. 2 ACD’s Dan & Lavonne ACD’s Joel & Marti Why Do We Have To Take It Again? ATTGATT Why do we have to take it again? When we went to the District Convention this year, we took the Trike Rider Course in order to keep our Master Level. Yes, it was HOT out there on the black asphalt at the airport. Yes, some riders had to do the exercise over a few times keeping the rest of us waiting. But, watching others helped us learn what not to do as well as what to do. After taking the advanced rider course for the third time, we now look at it a little differently. In the future we will be looking forward to it instead of wondering why we have to take it again. Did we learn anything we didn’t already know? You bet we did, we definitely learned that there’s always room for improvement. It was Intense and rigorous at times. Turning and stopping on two wheels was a little more than the co-rider expected. Luckily she was prepared for the unexpected! It’s like anything else in life, it’s important to keep learning and refining our skills. Refresher courses help with forgotten or neglected skills as well as redeveloping or correcting skills. The instructors were GREAT! They were knowledgeable, informative and extremely patient. Safety doesn’t happen by accident. Are you one with ATTGATT? Do you make ATGATT a priority? Do you know what ATGATT is? All The Gear All The Time. This means you wear and use all the proper gear each and every time you get on your motor. Many times, the weather is too hot. Not as hot as asphalt scraping against your skin! Don't need face protection? Anesthesia will take the pain away, too, while you're having that foreign body removed! Gloves protect your nails only if you're wearing them! Keeps sweat off the grips, too. We all buy things that seem good at the moment. Would you happen to have a safety item that still has the tag on it? Seems redundant to think about ATGATT because we're always talking about safety. We say it's the most important thing...to keep yourself safe before all others. Remember the shortcut you take may not have a positive end result. Are you one with ATGATT? Will you always make ATGATT a priority? Hope so! Marti and Joel Dan and Lavonne All The Gear All The Time! 3 Educator Bud Rider Levels Program — Intent on Safety It’s time for Chapter I riders and co-riders to think about their place in the GWRRA Rider Education Levels Program. Many of us began the program with enthusiasm, but may not have thought about it for awhile. It’s about more than patches or recognition. It’s about continuing to sharpen skill and awareness, and to accomplish those safe driving miles. The GWRRA Rider Education Division is structured in four Levels: Level I = Safety by Commitment. A member simply makes a commitment to safe riding. Level II = Safety by Education. A member is enrolled in Level 1, completes an approved rider course, and completes 5,000 safe miles. Level III = Safety by Preparedness. A member is enrolled in Level I, current in Level II, and completes a CPR and First Aid course. Level IV, or Master Tour Rider, is a member who has been current in Level III for one year and has accumulated 25,000 safe miles. Senior Master is earned 5 years after the year of achieving Level IV. Grand Master is earned 10 years after the year of achieving Level IV. Life Grand Master is earned 15 years after the year of achieving Level IV. Where are you in the Rider Education Program? Level I Level II Level III Sandy Bascom Carolyn Alvarado Felix Alvarado Crash Clymer Mark Bascom David Mark Norma Mocabee Larry Rauch Kathy Budavari Al DeSantiago Betty Rauch Bill Todd Master Senior Master Grand Master Jane McLauchlin Rod McLauchlin Bud Budavari Linda Flechtner Rich Mason George Mocabee Denece Newman Chuck Hatfield Lavonne Hillhouse Gary Newman Dan Jacobs Lorraine Nygren Wade Nygren Lorine Nunnally Don Nunnally Marti Winkler Joel Winkler If you believe you’ve reached a higher Level than what is recorded above, let me check that out with you and update GWRRA records if needed. And, let’s add more Chapter I members to this worthwhile program. Ride safe, and above all, have fun! Bud 4 District Directors Vince and Pam Puterbaugh Fall is in the Air As we enter October, you can feel that fall is in the air: the days are shorter, the nights are cooler, and we now have to check the NFL schedule before we commit to this Sunday’s ride. As far as riding and safety goes, we need to be keenly aware of the drivers around us as more commuters are driving with either sun in their eyes or is unaccustomed to darkness. As always, responsibility for our safety remains with us and needs to be our number one priority. Having said all that, fall is one of our favorite times to ride. The brisk fall air, if you can call 65 degrees brisk, is such a welcome change to the hot days of summer. The contrast between the sun and the shade as we ride through the foothills remind us that this is the interactive experience that cagers miss out on. If these are the types of rides you look forward to, then CA1L’s and CA1F’s annual events are right up your alley. On Saturday, October 5th, CA1L is holding their annual Pirate’s Run with some of the most picturesque scenery that California has to offer. On Saturday, October 26th, CA1F is hosting their annual Halloween Fun Run in beautiful San Diego. Both events provide a wonderful opportunity to dust off some of your old Halloween outfits and come in costume. In November, the District officers will be trekking to Las Vegas for the Regional Officer’s Conference. This will be our first opportunity to meet with Ray and Sandi Garris (GWRRA’S Directors) in an official capacity and to network with our peers across the region. In many respects, we will be doing the same thing that the chapters do at the various rallies: socialize, problem solve, and eat. On January 25th, we, along with the other senior District officers, will share the information gleaned in November with our chapters at California’s officer conference. All GWRRA members, not just officers, are welcome to attend and we will be holding breakout sessions for some of the positions where networking and problem solving will happen along with more detailed information regarding the specific positions. We strongly recommend taking some time during the first two weeks of November and get together with your fellow chapter members to reflect on and celebrate the successes of 2013 and your goals for 2014. Until next month, ride well and ride often. 5 Kevin Airport Restaurant Hunt October 6 1. You have between Jul 8 and Dec 1, 2013 to compete in this Hunt. Dan & Lavonne Wally & Willadean Kevin & Jackie October 1 October 16 October 18 2. Dan M. is holding a list of 11 airports in LA, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. 3. You must travel to 5 pre-selected, but as yet unrevealed, airports and have a meal — breakfast, lunch or dinner — at each of them. We will trust your honesty that you actually ate at the airport but a receipt will be a tie-breaker. Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust and hostility to evaporate. Albert Schweitzer Be there for a Chapter I member in need. Monte Kevin Marti If you have good news to share or would like Chapter I to be thinking & praying for you, contact Becky or Pat. (See pg. 14 for contact info.) 4. You must submit a “Hard Photo” of yourself (or group) to Dan that clearly identifies the airport eating establishment. Photos on cell phones DO NOT qualify. Photos from cell phones may be used, but they must be printed. 5. The only restaurants which will be included are those restaurants which Dan has pre-selected. While you may go to 5 different airport restaurants, you may not have gone to those on the selected list. The more airport restaurants you visit, the more you increase your odds of capturing pictures of the right ones. 6. The winner(s) will receive a $100.00 prize. In the event of a tie, that prize will be split amongst the winners. 7. The same rules apply as with the original Hunt — no electronic devices to be used, cell phones, GPS, internet. Talk to friends (or enemies). Somebody you know may just fly a plane. 6 October 2013 Sun Mon Tue 1 Wed 2 Thu 3 Fri 4 Sat 5 CA1-L Rally San Luis Obispo 6:00 AM Loc #1 6 7 8 9 10 11 GATHERING 12 Breakfast 8:-00 Meeting 8:30 After-Gathering Ride Elsinore 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 Lunch Ride Slater’s, Anaheim Hills 11:00 AM Loc #3 20 21 22 23 Business Mtg East Shore RV Pk San Dimas Newsletter Submission Deadline 27 Meet & Eat 24 25 26 6:30 AM Loc #3 7:00 PM 28 29 30 CA1-F Rally San Diego 31 3:00 PM Corky’s Rancho Cucamonga Ride Departure Locations—Page 8 Complete Ride and Event Details—Page 9 November 2013 Sun 3 Mon 4 Tue 5 Wed 6 Thu 7 Fri Sat 1 2 8 9 GATHERING Breakfast 8:-00 Meeting 8:30 After-Gathering Ride Circuitous Route to Polly’s Pies, Norco 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 CPR/First Aid El Dorado Park Upland 10:00 AM 17 18 19 20 Meet & Eat The Hat Upland 21 22 23 28 29 30 6:00 PM Newsletter Submission Deadline Ride 24Afternoon 25 Rainbow Oaks 26 27 Restaurant, Rainbow 2:00 PM Loc #3 7 December 2013 Sun 1 Mon 2 Tue 3 Wed 4 Thu 5 Fri 6 Sat 7 HOLIDAY PARTY Upland Hills Country Club See Flyer 8 9 10 11 12 13 GATHERING 14 Breakfast 8:-00 Meeting 8:30 After-Gathering Ride Ricardo’s Place San Juan Capistrano 15 16 17 MEET & EAT 18 19 20 21 25 26 27 28 Vince’s Rancho Cucamonga 6:00 PM 22 23 24 29 30 31 Chapter I Ride Departure Locations Location 1: Mobil Station—2249 Huntington Drive, Duarte From I-210 exit Mt. It is difficult to plan well without knowing who’s coming. Please be mindful that it is equally as important for other Chapter rallies. Pre-registration is the highest form of etiquette for our fellow Gold Wingers who work just as hard on their events as we do on ours. Check out the upcoming rallies and take time to pre-register. Thank you! 18 REGION ‘F’un STAFF Region F Directors Assistant Directors Assistant Directors Assistant Directors Treasurer Region F Educators Asst. Region Educator Asst.
