OF LAND & TONGUE THEO CLINKARD **** The Observer **** Herald Scotland Pari Naderi **** acrossthearts.co.uk r text Pari Naderi Clinkard’s choreography has an unforced, unhurried quality that is very much of the moment. He muses, tinkers around with his material like a bloke in a shed, and then, quietly and deftly, pulls the loose ends together. The result is intimate, human-scale and charged with joy. OF LAND & TONGUE The Observer on OF LAND & TONGUE Through eloquent dance, conversation, vivid imagery and song, an exceptional cast of six performers engage their audience in an intimate celebration of language and experience. OF LAND & TONGUE draws upon a collection of words from numerous cultures which elude direct translations into English. The unnoticed is articulated, and the deeply familiar is illuminated, inviting the audience to consider the shifting relations between what can be said with words and what is experienced with the body. Staged in unconventional venues, this hour long work features compelling performances, occasional hilarity and live music to create a memorable evening for an audience of sixty. OF LAND & TONGUE is usually presented as a double bill alongside CHALK, a duet Clinkard performs with composer James Keane. The two works are performed for an audience of sixty, sat around two corner sides of an intimate performance space. OF LAND & TONGUE is conceived for presentation in unconventional spaces as well as regular theatre venues. The double bill has been presented in a school gym, a fruit market, an Art Deco hall, a roof top studio, a converted cinema, a converted chapel, an Arts and Crafts Quaker hall, a converted buttery and a maltings. The two works premiered in June 2014, before embarking on three tours including performances in Winterthur, Switzerland. It makes it impossible not to move in your seat. Acrossthearts.co.uk on OF LAND & TONGUE …it all somehow falls into place, such is the joy of Clinkard's choreography. He makes it all look so easy and in the moment. A joy to watch, with ever yone getting a chance to shine. Acrossthearts.co.uk on OF LAND & TONGUE ...a five-handed ensemble piece that plays, delightfully, with language... The dancers are uniformly excellent. The Observer on OF LAND & TONGUE Zoe Manders Choreographer t Clinkard tells us that the chalk cliffs are made up of the compacted skeletons of marine creatures, dead for millennia. He dances this compaction: twisting, looping and gyrating. His bones and his arching spine sing of their destiny; one day they too will be ground to chalk. The Observer on CHALK Pari Naderi CHALK Clinkard uses the iconic chalk cliffs of his hometown as a point of departure for this stark, poetic and slightly absurd duet, which he performs with composer James Keane. Through the simplest of means, the work playfully encourages us to reconsider our own physical make up as the two men carefully transform both objects and their own bodies to evoke the matter of chalk, whilst addressing the socio-geographic associations many people have with the cliffs in question. Guy Hoare The Observer on CHALK Old Town Clothing 35 mins Clinkard's choreography is intuitive, elemental and forever on the brink of collapse, a study in frailty and elegant vulnerability. Acrossthearts.co.uk on CHALK WATCH TRAILER I look forward to seeing what Clinkard does next. There’s a real sense of second wind about his career right now. It will be interesting to see where it blows him. THEO CLINKARD In just 3 years, choreographer, performer and stage designer, Theo Clinkard has built an international reputation for creating compelling and visually arresting works that explore the communicative potential of the body and the empathetic nature of dance in performance. He launched his own 7-strong company in 2012 and subsequently created numerous works which have toured across the UK and internationally and received critical and audience acclaim. Company works include HELL BENT, ORDINARY COURAGE (BDE Edinburgh 2014), OF LAND & TONGUE (BDE Cymru 2016 + Tanzmesse 2016) and CHALK. Clinkard is currently planning THIS BRIGHT FIELD, his new full-length middle-scale production for 12 dancers due to premiere in spring 2017. The work is co commissioned and co produced by Dance4, the renowned dance development organisation in Nottingham where he is an Associate Artist. Outside of his company work, Clinkard is currently under taking a range of high profile international commissions. In September 2015 he created Somewhat still when seen from above for the dancers and technicians of TANZTHEATER WUPPERTAL PINA BAUSCH as part of their very first evening of new work since the choreographers death 6 years earlier. In May 2016, Clinkard will premiere his latest commission for 20 dancers at DANZA CONTEMPORANEA DE CUBA, in the recently refurbished and renamed Alicia Alonso Theatre in Havana. To date, Clinkard has premiered 22 original dance works, many of them created for training institutions and youth companies in England, Austria, Chile, Ireland, Wales and New Zealand. As a dancer, Clinkard is currently dancing with Fearghus O’ Connor. He has previously worked for Wayne McGregor, Siobhan Davies Dance, Matthew Bourne, Bonachela Dance Co, Bgroup, New Ar t Club, Charles Linehan, The Featherstonehaughs, Laila Diallo, Seke Chimutengwende, Fevered Sleep, Volcano/National Theatre Wales, Dog Kennel Hill, Walker Dance Park Music, Michael Keegan-Dolan and PROBE; the 'dancer run' company he co-founded with Antonia Grove. Clinkard has recently toured 'Accumulation (1971)', an iconic signature solo work by the pioneering American choreographer Trisha Brown, widely regarded as the most significant choreographer to emerge from the postmodern era. He is the first man and the first non-company dancer to perform this legendary solo. As a theatre designer, he works in opera, theatre, dance and live art including work for Opera La Scala, Malmö Opera, Scottish Opera, Sydney Dance Co, Skänes Dansteater and Scottish Dance Theatre. Clinkard is a Resident Artist at Greenwich Dance and an Associate Artist at Dance4. Zoe Manders The Observer on ORDINARY COURAGE Clinkard’s movement language is deceptive, its apparent simplicity that of well-written dialogue. There’s nothing that doesn’t need to be there...
