a matter of choice
Destiny... a matter of choice T here are very few things in this world I feel more passionate about than this: many people age better when they choose to make the decision to come to Friendship Haven themselves. The success stories on our campus are too numerous to count. Whether it’s the 85 year old that moved into our apartments with leg braces and a walker and six months after living here and participating in our wellness classes she ditches all adaptive equipment… or the 62 year old who moved here so she could actually focus on the things she loves to do (travel, bike, garden, exercise, play) rather than being tied down by must-dos (rake, mow, paint, keep up her house.) The stories are amazing. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many pieces to growing older. Believe it or not it’s a train we are all on and we can’t stop it we can only hang on for the ride. There are too many uncertainties in life to make a plan for all the “what-ifs.” The true beauty of the “what-ifs” is that at Friendship Haven you don’t have to bear them alone. You will always have a partner when you are a part of this family. To put it simply you will always have a “what-if ” partner. There are too many examples of when the “what-if ” partner scenario works exactly the way it’s supposed to. Most recently though, I’m reminded of a very touching story of a husband who lost his wife to the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s. He lost her while they both lived on our campus. She in our Simpson Health Center and he in our River Ridge apartments. He told me over and over this “what if ” that fell upon him was devastating but knowing he already felt so connected to his Friendship Haven family made this life transition much easier to bear. The realities of aging are upon us. I am always encouraged by the folks who take control of their own destiny and choose to create their world for the future rather than let the circumstances of aging control their future. I call those who make the decision to move here because they want to, not because they have to, enlightened. I use that word for many reasons; it’s not easy to leave the home you took so many years to create. But those who do it while they can enjoy an active, engaged lifestyle always seem to age better. They seem to add life to their years! I hope you enjoy reading and learning more about the Friendship Haven lifestyle. I invite you to ask questions and learn more. Whether you are considering a move yourself or you’re a family member wanting to encourage a move for a loved one it’s never too early to inquire. You might be surprised what you find out. Also I have to thank all of our donor partners that so continuously give every year to ensure Friendship Haven remains a steadfast “what if?” partner for years to come for so many friends in our community. Sincerely, Julie Thorson President and CEO Enjoy the Good Life: Discover the Friendship Haven Lifestyle . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2 Not Quite Ready to Move: Henshaws Appreciate the Priority Move-In List . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .4 Life is an Adventure: Friendship Haven Travel Club Enriches Community . . . . . . . . . . . . .6 Peace and Security: Friendship Haven Provides a Safety Net for People Living on Campus . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 For those “What If”s in Your Life: Let Us Be Your Partner . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .10 Year in Review . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 12 Star Society Members Volunteers Board of Directors Governor’s Award 2 Enjoy the Good Life - Discover the R including card clubs, billiards games, monthly potlucks, exercise classes at the Wellness Center and swimming pool, educational seminars, computer classes, writing groups, worship services, Bible studies and more, you can be as involved as you choose. Members of Friendship Haven’s Travel Club enjoy a whole library of opportunities with each trip they take. “We’ve gone on big trips to Hawaii and Washington, D.C., as well as day trips in Iowa,” said Carole Peters, who travels with her husband, David, who live in Fort Dodge. “The trips are well organized and a lot of fun.” The Travel Club is open to people in the community, as well as people who live on campus. Each winter, members are invited to a Travel Showcase at Friendship Haven, where they share input on their top choices and vote on their favorite destinations. Throughout the year, the Travel Club offers a variety of affordable day trips to Broadway shows, theater plays, and world-class musical performances at leading venues around Iowa and the Midwest. “We really liked the Daniel O’Donnell concert,” said Carole, who signed up for the Travel Club mailing list several years ago. The Travel Club also organizes longer, out-of-state bus trips, as well as cruises in popular overseas destinations, including the Mediterranean. “We’re past the stage of wanting to drive when we travel,” Carole said. “With the Travel Club, we don’t have to worry about anything, plus we meet a lot of nice people.” The Peters also look forward to the famous homemade fudge prepared by Steve Ehrhardt, Friendship Haven’s life enrichment specialist who organizes the Travel Club. “We like how everything is included in the price of each trip, and we eat at great places along the way,” Carole added. On every adventure, the Travel Club makes it easy to relax and explore. “It’s great that Friendship Haven offers their Travel Club available to the community,” Carole said. When her health needs changed and she needed more assistance with daily living activities, including medication management, Friendship Haven was the family’s first choice. “It’s good to know that in Friendship Haven’s 60+ years of existence, no one has ever been asked to leave because they can’t afford to pay the full cost of living on campus.” —Ron Blanchet “Friendship Haven is the premiere care provider in the area,” said Ron, whose mother enjoyed playing bingo and taking day trips with her friends at The Gardens. “The levels of care available at Friendship Haven were very important to us. Whether Mom would eventually need that care or not, we appreciated that it was available.” The family’s appreciation also extended to Friendship Haven’s charitable care. Friendship Haven provides the Care Trust Fund, an endowed fund that provides for the monthly expenses of accommodations and care for those who have exhausted their resources. All recipients remain confidential. “It’s good to know that in Friendship Haven’s 60+ years of existence, no one has ever been asked to leave because they can’t afford to pay the full cost of living on campus,” Ron said. Knowing that a safety net is available at Friendship Haven is reassuring.” The care, companionship, and encouragement that Friendship Haven provides are a blessing on so many levels for countless families like the Blanchets. Ron sees this compassion in action at the Simpson Health Center, where his older sister, Bonnie, has lived since December 2013. A retired nurse, Bonnie spent most of her career in the Milwaukee area before two bouts with cancer prompted her return to Iowa to be closer to family. “When some of Bonnie’s friends from Milwaukee came to visit, they couldn’t believe a community the size of Fort Dodge could have such a great health care center,” Ron noted. Friendship Haven is more than a home; it’s a family, he added. “All the resources that Friendship Haven offers provide real peace of mind. It’s a wonderful place.” Ron Blanchet In 2014, Friendship Haven provided more than $1.1 million in charitable care, while receiving $421,000 in benevolent care income. The only reason we can continue to do the things we do is because of your committed partnership. And as a partner, we hope you share some sense of ownership and pride as you read these stories. You are a very large part of why our friends here enjoy happiness and peace of mind. We hope these stories have painted a strong picture of why we feel this is a special place. Our unique brand of offering active, healthy lifestyles along with innovative, compassionate care offers a wholistic approach to providing real enjoyment in the retirement years, not to mention the sense of family our friends here share with one another. All of these allow us to be the best “what-if ” partner we can be when unexpected events in life occur. When combined with the safety-net of the charitable care we provide, Friendship Haven continues to fulfill our vision of “People living full lives with faith, passion, and purpose.” We want to make an appeal to you for your continued generosity towards our mission. Having an effective, complete overall approach to helping our neighbors bear the “what-ifs” in life requires real dollars. No greater example of this is mentioned in the preceding article: providing over $1 million in charity care while generating offsetting revenues of $421,000. As you can see, that gap is very wide and threatens to grow wider as time goes on. It can only be narrowed through your ongoing graciousness. Your gifts will not only help those no longer in a position to help themselves, but will also allow us to maintain our commitment to always providing the best in innovative programs and services. Your partnership will continue to touch real lives. Please continue your support. Thanks again. That’s why “vibrant” best describes Friendship Haven’s Simpson Health Center, which earned the 2014 Governor’s Award for Quality Care in Health Care Facilities. “It’s easy to see the ‘black and white’ – the environment, the rules, the expectations—and all of those things are important,” said Jennifer Crimmins, vice president of Health Center operations and licensed administrator of the Simpson Health Center. “What’s truly meaningful, however, is the color – the vivid relationships that create home.” This spirit is reflected in the people of Friendship Haven, said Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, who presented the award at the Health Center on August 20. “You exceed expectations and are doing a firstclass job. I encourage to you to continue to excel.” The Governor’s Award for Quality Care in Health Care Facilities award goes beyond black and white by emphasizing quality of life, said Crimmins. The Governor’s Award for Quality Care in Health Care Facilities award goes beyond black and white by emphasizing quality of life, said Crimmins, who noted: • Black and white is comfortable. Beyond black and white is growing, learning, and innovating. • Black and white is following rules, regulations, and meeting expectations. Beyond is raising the bar on excellence for not only ourselves, but challenging our entire industry to think differently. • Black and white is a routine, organization-driven, one-sizefits-most plan of care. Beyond empowers team members and gives people choices in their plan of care. One of our residents said it best: “They know what I want before I even know I want it.” • Black and white is being a partner in care. Beyond is being a partner in life. • Beyond is listening, hearing, and doing—creating color in the life of those we serve.
