The Senior Source nEWS 50th Anniversary Edition 2011, Volume 31 the senior source at fifty Over the Hill and Picking up Speed In 1961, Dallas boasted a population of nearly 700,000, two newspapers, two professional football teams (who can forget the Dallas Texans?) and a reputation as a forward-thinking, charitable city with a vibrant and growing commercial sector. Local headlines announced the opening of Six Flags Over Texas, Judy Garland’s performance at Fair Park Music Hall, a merger between the Frito Company and the H.W. Lay & Company - and the Dallas Cowboys’ very first win. The Dallas Times Herald Magazine profiled what it referred to as a “happiness center” in East Dallas in April of that year, where five days a week, older adults stayed busy experiencing the pleasures of growing old. “A Bid for Happy Hearts” told the story of Hospitality House, the activity center run by the E. D. Farmer Foundation that The Rest of the Story For the record, this cover story tells how The Senior Source officially got its start. The interesting story behind the story, though, lies in the history of the E. D. Farmer Foundation and with E. D. Farmer himself, and begins in 19th century England. Edward Disney Farmer was born in 1849, of English parentage in Ireland. His father was a clergyman of the Church of England. He was educated in England but immigrated to the United States in 1871 and worked in a flour mill in Minnesota until 1875 when he moved to Fort Worth. There he labored as a construction worker for $1.50 a day. He saved his money and invested in cattle ranching, eventually moving to Aledo to oversee his investment. Farmer’s cattle business proved so successful that he began to invest the profits into a new interest – real estate. He accumulated large holdings in Fort Worth (where he helped finance the Texas Hotel) and in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he would live for a number of years. continued on page 3 . . . In June, our billboard on the North Dallas Tollway greeted southbound commuters with news of our 50th. provided senior citizens, 60 years and above, the opportunity to find new interests, meet new people, and continue to enjoy life. Photos depicted members dancing, performing, playing bridge and painting. The article went on to describe these opportunities provided by the center as “in most cases, the best thing that could happen to elderly people”- a characterization that still applies to the nonprofit agency it would one day become. For months, however, the Foundation’s Advisory Board had struggled with financial difficulties, as the need for services was growing beyond what the Foundation could provide. Members agreed their role as an advisory board would prohibit them from raising additional funding. The solution: create a nonprofit organization that would allow them to more easily solicit funds from individuals and foundations, and would also be eligible for consideration as a Dallas Community Chest (a precursor to United Way) agency. Later that year, the new organization was incorporated as Senior Citizens Foundation of Dallas. It was business as usual during the agency’s early days and the leadership remained essentially the same. Its first annual report, Adding Life to the Years, listed officers including Eugene M. Locke, president, Robert Olmsted, vice president, and John M. Stemmons, treasurer. It went on to state that the Senior Citizens Foundation would continue “serving senior continued on page 3 . . . 2011-12 Board of Directors Directors Executive Committee Chairman-elect Robert W. Subsequent years saw continued growth and expansion in the community and by the end of the first decade, a name change to Senior Citizens of Greater Dallas, Inc. Then, in December of 1976, Molly H. Bogen, who had interned at the agency as a graduate school social worker, was hired as executive director. Under Molly’s charge, the agency began to shift its focus towards developing more advocacy, volunteer programs and direct services for older adults. The programs added during the the next couple of decades make up the framework of the nine programs The Senior Source offers today. With these strong programs in place at the dawn of the new millennium, the agency could now focus on how it would best serve the community as it faced the impending age explosion. A name change to The Senior Source, to more clearly describe its mission, was followed by the first-ever capital campaign, Coming of Age, to secure funds for a new facility from which the needs of older adults could be adquately met during the next twenty-five years. Today, The Senior Source serves more than 30,000 older adults and their family members every year in Dallas and Collin Counties. In addition to marking 50 years of service to the greater Dallas area, 2011 also represents the significant challenge of serving the first ranks of Baby Boomers who turn 65 this year. This reality, coupled with increasing longevity of older adults, means the work of The Senior Source becomes even more urgent. The agency remains hopeful, however, that through the kindheartedness and vision of Dallas and its citizens that has remained constant during the last 50 years, it can continue to meet future demands and challenges of serving older adults. ...The Rest of the Story continued At about the same time Farmer was getting established in Texas, another Brit, George Beggs, left England for Texas where he also settled just outside of Fort Worth in what is now Handley. He leased land there and began dealing in cattle and horses. His business thrived and in 1895, he moved his wife and children to Fort Worth where he opened a livestock commission and loan business in the Stockyard District. His three sons would all eventually get into ranching; two of the brothers working the ranches, and the third, George Beggs, Jr., handling the financial end of the business. Somewhere along the line, perhaps in England, or maybe upon settling in Texas, E. D. Farmer and George Beggs, Sr. became good friends – best friends - according to the Beggs Cattle Company history. Thankfully, their paths did cross and a relationship developed that factored heavily into the genesis of our organization. In the early 1920s, Farmer moved back to Fort Worth from British Columbia, and he hired Beggs’ son, George Beggs, Jr., who had also become a good friend, to manage his real estate ventures and to serve as executor of his estate, which was quite sizeable. The value of his real estate holdings in Fort Worth alone was estimated at $1 million. Farmer died in 1924, and it was discovered that this quiet, unassuming, bachelor had anonymously given thousands of dollars annually to religious, patriotic, educational and social-welfare organizations. In his will he directed Beggs, Jr. to distribute the George Beggs, Jr. George Beggs, Sr. bulk of his wealth to such charities and worthy objects as he saw fit. Beggs’ thoughtful stewardship of Farmer’s estate continued through the years, and in 1948 he set up the E.D. Farmer Foundation for the Aged and Infirmed to provide assistance to older adults of Texas. The Foundation was established with the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas as the trustee and Diocese offices served as the Dallas facility at 5100 Ross Avenue. During the following decade, the E.D. Farmer Foundation went about the business of “helping older people and those who care for them to add life to years,” primarily through Golden Age Clubs activity centers. In 1957, it formed the Hospitality House located on the grounds of the Diocese and shortly thereafter, began to administer a casework and counseling program for older adults. Which brings us back to where our story officially begins. 3 Timeline: The First Fifty 1961 Senior Citizens Foundation of Dallas established in 1961 to succeed the E. D. W. Bush was asked after the skydive celebrating his 85th birthday - why he did it, he famously replied, “Well...just because you’re old, that doesn’t mean you can’t do fun stuff. And you don’t want to sit around drooling in the corner.” Our sentiments exactly.”’ So we decided to hold our own skydiving event to celebrate our 50th birthday, and to send a message to everyone 50 and older that you can - and should - continue to do “fun stuff.” We’also set a goal of raising $50,000 to commemorate the occasion and support the programs through which we serve older adults in our community. On October 1, 50 skydivers 50+, including board members, staff, old and new friends, took to the skies for The Senior Source at our 50 Over 50: JUMP INTO ACTION Tandem Skydiving Event. These brave adventurers tandem skydived throughout the day with the professionals at Skydive Dallas, northeast of McKinney. More than 150 friends and supporters turned out to celebrate and cheer on our 50 Daredevils as they take the ultimate leap of faith for a great cause. A lunchtime celebration also took place with a videotaped message from veteran skydiver and Honorary Chairman, former President George H. W. Bush and a delicious meal from our friends at Dickey’s Barbeque. Be sure and look for photos in our next issue of The Senior Source News. Spirit of Generations Luncheon 2011 This year, as we celebrate 50 years of service, we are pleased to pay tribute to five individuals whose indelible marks on the community - and on our organization - will endure for generations. Becky Bright, Carolyn and David Miller, and Lydia and Dan Novakov will be honored on Monday, November 21 at the 2011 Spirit of Generations Awards Luncheon. The event will be held at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas at 12:00 noon. For information on sponsorship opportunities, contact us at 214-823-5700 ext. 6120 or by email at [email protected]. H O N O R E E S Becky Bright David & Carolyn Miller Lydia & Dan Novakov 12 Agency News Keeping Seniors Safe One of the greatest challenges facing older adults in Dallas and across the country is how to remain safe. As persons age and frequently become more frail and vulnerable, they often experience a devastating loss of security of both person and property. Thanks to the generosity of the W.W. Caruth, Jr. Foundation of the Communities Foundation of Texas, The Senior Source is in a yearlong collaborative planning process to develop a senior safety model to address key issues of senior safety in our community. The model will be one that will create services that will be transformational and sustainable. Working in collaboration with The Senior Source are Baylor University Medical Center, Chase Bank, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office, the Dallas Police Department, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services/Adult Protective Services, John Norris, an attorney who serves on the Texas State Guardianship Advisory Board and Clarkson Davis for project management. To develop the model, the collaborators are gathering information about key areas of safety: abuse and exploitation, frauds and scams, safety in the home and neighborhood, financial security, and guardianship. Once the information gathering is complete, the collaborative will then turn to designing a model to address concerns with the intent being to receive funding to implement the program and ensure that older adults in Dallas are significantly more secure. He will be deeply missed. 13 Agency News Geriatric Care Management - a new program for a new chapter In our last newsletter, we reported that after several years of planning and securing start-up funding - courtesy of Bank of America and The Meadows Foundation - our first ever fee-based program was set to launch. The new program, Geriatric Care Management, is designed for those concerned about the changing circumstances of an older adult and are seeking solutions to ensure the highest quality of life. It provides confidential and indepth personalized services tailored to meet individual needs for older adults and their caregivers. The program hit the ground running in March under the direction of Cyndy Selecman Morgan - a former development director at The Senior Source, and Lue Taff, who has been at the helm of our Elder Cyndy Selecman Morgan, Molly Bogen, Bob Best, and Lue Taff Support Program for the past nine years until joining this new venture. The first three months were spent fine tuning the program’s goals and creating an Advisory Group. Since then, the program has assisted over 40 older adults and their families. In depth assessments with written recommendations have been made to families needing assistance on issues including home visits from specialized doctors, recommendations on how to modify their home, and learning how to monitor the care of their older relative from a distance. Our feedback has been very gratifying. Clients like the one-stop shopping we offer as experts on senior resources in our area. For more information, contact Cyndy Selecman Morgan at 214-823-5700 ext. 6157 or [email protected] Junior League of Dallas The Senior Source takes to the golden screen with SOLE SISTERS, an innovative film project spearheaded by award-winning film maker Cynthia Salazar Mondell, that will explore the different stages of women's lives through intimate stories about their relationship to their shoes. Young women from the SOLE SISTERS project were enthralled with the stories the women from The Senior Source’s Foster Grandparent Program shared. A group of Chinese women remembered their mothers binding their feet to ensure they would remain small so they could marry good husbands. A group of African American women talked about how their parents would trace their feet on butcher block paper, go into town and return with new shoes. A Hispanic woman told the story of her red high heels that sit on her dresser in order to keep shoes near to her. The film is scheduled to premiere in late 2012.
