From a Spark to a
Blaze

Phase One 2011: Operation
Tsinelas (Flip Flop): One year in
the making
One thing can lead to another,
with willingness of heart, love,
and compassion to poor, innocent
children in the remote Atulayan
Island, Luzon, Philippines. The flip
flops walked many miles in many
directions since 2011. That little
‘spark’ has now become a ‘blaze’…
growing from one box of used
clothing to many more, expanding
from one village, to four...and
counting.
We launched Operation Tsinelas
in 2011 to distribute flip flops to
many poor children living on a
remote island, Atulayan Island, of
the Philippines. Our group began
with projects, such as building a
house, roof, toilet, and painting
chapels. Next we expanded into
the distribution of medicine, used
clothing, shoes, school supplies,
purses, seeds and even counseling,
motivating and evangelizing. The

people were very appreciative. The
project was funded privately by
my American family and I here in
Iowa. We received donations from
local people and organizations. My
Philippine family soon became part of
the team effort also.
Good news about the project soon
spread to other small towns in the
rural areas of the island. Many people
have requested used clothing, ‘tsinelas’
flip flop, and even medicine. Money
donated for one pair of flip flops can
buy a kilo of rice. Food needs come
first. Before the flip flops, so many
poor children either wear slippers
with holes or go barefoot. Many of
the people in the villages depend on
fishing, agriculture, and some are
laborers. The unlucky go hungry.
Although I don’t have enough
funds, I believe that it is not how
much we give, but how do we give
it. I have faith in God and believe
that He will provide.
Phase Two 2012: Operation
Toothbrush Ministry
We expanded our out-reach
activities to many needy families in
additional villages in Bikol Region,
Luzon. We could not help all of the
villages, but we helped the “very

needy ones”. This year’s highlight
included toothbrush and toothpaste
and we introduced proper dental care
to many school children.
One early morning, we were
walking near the seashore of my
birthplace in Tinambac, Luzon, and
our feet took us into a small hut with
eight children who possessed neither
toothbrushes nor slippers. The
mother, who looked pale and sick,
was doing a pile of laundry to help
the family income.
I interviewed the mother and
asked how I could help them. Four
of the little children bore signs of
untreated wounds and skin diseases
and these immediately caught my
eye. I tended to them immediately,
applying medication.
I set my niece Rachell to look for
guava twigs and showed her how to
make them into small homemade
toothbrushes. I brushed the children’s
teeth, using stove ashes to polish
their teeth. My family was poor also
when I was a little girl in the village,
so I performed the same practice
since I could see myself in them.
Their wondrous smiles brought me a
great sense of satisfaction.
I became an instant ad hoc dentist
technician and temporary nurse,
and when I finished, we became
acquainted with our new friends
and I started evangelizing. To my
amazement, an old widow rushed
through the decrepit bamboo fence
with a sense of amazement in her
voice. “ I hear someone is talking
about God, can I listen also?”, she
asked. I smiled and she sat on a

bamboo bench and the whole family
and the old woman listened. I was
surprised that the family did not even
know much about the Word of God
and the way to pray. I taught them
some basics and that made everyone’s
day.
I left the place and promised
to cement the floor of the family
dweling and also build the house for
the old woman. She was so grateful
and happy that God answered her
long-time prayers.
We came back the next day to
distribute toothbrushes, toothpaste,
and some food.
Phase Three 2013: Operation
Reach for the Stars: Boat and Book
Drive and Scholarships
After visiting two poor villages,
our feet took us back to Atulayan
Island, our pilot project, discovering
special needs. An elementary teacher
requested books that had illustrations
that the children could read as
the children use only curriculum
books. This teacher also asked for
dictionaries as seventy students share
two dictionaries.
With no
electricity or
computers on
the island, a set
of encyclopedias
would be a great
help and we are
researching this
now. Notebooks
are also badly
needed, since
one child can
only have
one or two
notebooks.
The school has no library. People
there hoped the government would
build a library. Four empty rooms
were available but the structure had
no roof. Authorities promised this
facility but nothing ever materialized.
Transportation of high school
students from the island to the
mainland by boat proved to
be a major problem. The little
community required a boat large
enough for more students. Many
students are late for school or even
miss classes for lack of a larger craft.
I thought of an idea, “Boat and
Book Drive”. The boat will cost
$2,000.00. I believe that we can give
them a boat in the near future. For
now, we will start with the books. I
couldn’t wait until the following day
to start the book drive. We went to
a second hand store and begged the
owner for solid offers of hundreds
of books. Treasure Chest of Laurens,
owned by Milly Burnham, was so
generous to give us almost 500 books

at a good price that our funding
could afford.
I believe that if we want to have
hope for our children, education
will arm them to face their future
world. Their future depends upon
a great deal of help. They must
acquire reading skills, enhancement
in their knowledge in all levels, and
above all improvement in mastery
of the English language. This young
generation, enhanced and fortified
with education, will impact their
lives, especially when it is their time
to someday start a family. This might
even help control the population in
the village or even in the country.
Phase Three will sponsor ten high
school scholarships in 2013 to those
who have good grades and aspire
to higher education. Many of the
parents of the students cannot afford
to send their children to school, so
these children marry young or are
sent off to be housemaids or helpers.
All these projects cannot be
carried through without all the
support of many generous donors
in small towns/cities of Iowa. The
Atulayan Elementary School and
other villages that were touched by
the love and compassion extend their
‘Thank you’. Thank you for helping
us save children and give them a
chance at a better future.

Writers Free For All will meet
Monday, February 18th at 7 p.m. We are
encouraged to keep writing our childhood
memories, but also since it’s February
maybe throw a love story in there! Please
join us for inspiration, even if you haven’t
written this month.
The Book Club’s February choice is
Emma Donoghue’s “Room.” I’m about
ready to pick up a copy and read it again.
Here’s what our library catalog says about
it: “A five-year-old narrates a story about
his life growing up in a single room where
his mother aims to protect him from the
man who has held her prisoner for seven
years since she was a teenager.” How’s that
for an interesting point of view? I think
we’ll find lots of things to talk about here.
We’ve got lots of copies, so stop and pick
one up to read, even if you can’t join the
discussion at 7 p.m. on Monday Feb, 25th.
We’re still working on weeding our
adult nonfiction. As I write this, I’m still
in the 600’s, but that’s still progress, right?
Stop at the Library to see if any of these
books want to go home with you. I’ve also
found some areas that we have needed to
update, so I placed an order this week for
some new nonfiction, just enough to fill in
the gaps I created!

L-M Middle School Wrestlers Get Season Off To Successful
Start
The Laurens-Marathon M.S. Wrestlers opened the season on January 29th in a meet hosted by Pocahontas Areas Schools.
Six wrestlers competed in the contest, wrestling a total of 13 matches, and at the end of the day, the team ended competition
with an overall win-loss record of 7W-6L.
Noah Anderson led the team with 3 match victories. Noah defeated Lucas Lampe of Carrol Kemper 10-1 In his second
match, he won by decision over Brody Goodman of South Central Calhoun(SCC) 5-2. In his final match of the contest,
Noah defeated Logan Fonken of SCC.
Rick Unger added two victories to his and the team’s record. Rick wrestled the same wrestler twice due to a low number
of participants in his weight class. In his first match, Rick won by decision over Dash Boitnott 14-2. Later in a rematch,
Rick again won by decision 15-6.
Gunner Arends tallied one win and one loss in the contest. In his first match, Gunner defeated Meika Lohrs Dowling
6-4. In his second match, Gunner lost by fall to Jason Tripp 2:47.
Brandon Beyer also tallied a one win, one loss record for the day. Brandon started with a loss by fall to Kent Woestre of
Humbodt in :19 before bouncing back to win by fall over Lee Fishbaugh of SEW in 1:23.
Jason Wood suffered two losses on the day. In his first match, Jason lost to Cody Linn of Humboldt. In his second
contest, Jason lost to Miles Rupier 15-5.
Mike Mahorney suffered two losses on the day. In his first match, Mike lost by fall to Jeremy Williams of PAC in :23.
In his second contest, Mike lost by fall Tanner Campbell of South Central Calhoun in :46.
L-M JH Wrestling Posts Another Successful Meet

The Laurens-Marathon MS wrestlers went to Rockwell City on February 4th for the South Central Calhoun Wrestling
Meet. Six wrestlers participated in the meet, wrestling a total of 12 matches. The team came home with 8W-4L, uping the
team’s season win-loss record 15W-10L.
Ricky Unger led the team with 2 match victories. Ricky beat Devin Allen (OABCIG) with a pin :27. His second match,
he defeated Alex Scheuble (OABCIG) 19-14.
Noah Anderson also had two victories, adding to the team’s record. Noah won his first match against Michael Streed
(OABCIG) with 16-0 technical fall in 4:00. Noah next wrestled Brody Goodman from SCC, winning again 8-4.
Gunnar Arends had one win and one loss this meet. In the first match, Gunnar defeated Meika Lohrs Dowling 9-7. In
his second match he was pinned in 1:10. He wrestled Chase Devitt from OABCIG.
Brandon Beyer had a win and a loss. This makes his record 2-2. In Brandon's first match, he wrestled Ben Wozniak of
SCC. Beyer pinned Wozniak 2:29. In Beyer's second match against Grant Gansemer (East Sac), he was pinned in :49.
Jason Wood had a nice meet bringing in two wins. First Jason wrestled Austin Behrendsen (OABCIG) winning with a
pin in :40. Next, Jason wrestled Austin Burger of MNW for his second match. Jason won, 9-2, after an Injury Default after
the 1st period.
Mike Mahorney suffered two losses on the day. In his first match, Mike was pinned in :40. He was wrestling Adam
Brown of PAC. In his second match, Mike wrestled Jeremy Williams of PAC, losing by fall in 1:25.

On February 7th

On Thursday, February 7th, the
Laurens-Marathon M.S. wrestlers
hosted a ten team invite. The Ten teams
in attendance included GraettingerTerril-Ruthven-Ayrshire, Pocahontas
Area, Sioux Central, River Valley, AltaAurelia,West Bend-Mallard GCB, East
Sac, Prairie Valley and South Central
Calhoun and Laurens-Marathon.
Six wrestlers competed for LaurensMarathon in a total of 12 matches. The
team came out 6W-6L, uping the season
record to 21-16.
Gunnar Arends started the meet
with a win. He wrestled Brock Bobinet
from PAC. The score was 4-2. Gunnar's
second match wasn't as successful. He
wrestled Meika Loers-Dowling of SEW
losing a close match 5-7.
Jason Wood was our second wrestler
this meet. Jason pinned Joe Ferguson
(GTRA) in 1:19. Later Jason wrestled
Garrett Bales (SEW), and he pinned him
in :27 seconds--his fastest pin so far this
season.
Noah Anderson gained two wins
on the day. In his first match against
Connor Carstens (PV), Noah scored 10
points while shutting out his opponent,
making the score 10-0. Noah also
wrestled Sam Stadler (RV) and pinned
him in 2:42. Noah is currently 7-0 on
the season.

(AA) first and lost 8-0. In his second
match, Ricky was pinned in 2:50. He
wrestled Kolton Klingson (PV). This

season, but he is still 4W-2L this year.

(RV) and lost 1-10. He also wrestled
Tanner Campbell, and was pinned in
1:28.

Gansemer (ES) in 2:50. When Brandon
wrestled Ben Wozniak of SCC, he won
with a score of 3-2.
The L-M middle school wrestlers will
next travel to Gilmore City to compete
on February 19th at 4 p.m.

Season Ends
The Lady Chargers took on Storm Lake
St. Mary’s on Thursday, Feb. 7 in their
first round of district play. Although the
Chargers had defeated St. Mary’s twice
before in the season, the third time was
not a charm as they were defeated by a
score of 40-28.
Briley Sullivan scored 10 points for
the night. Allison Hofmaster, Brooke
Runneberg and Kaityln Pinney all had 4
points for the night.
Brooke pulled down 9 rebounds,
Briley 8 and Tiffani Reese and Kaitlyn
each had 4.
The Charger men traveled to West Bend
of Friday night, February 8 to take on
the Wolverines of WBM. The were
victorious with the end score being 5839.
Tyler Stumbo tallied 38 points and
Seth Hersom had 10.
Seth pulled down 15 rebounds, Matt
Cleveland had 6, Tyler had 5 and Ben
Fuchs had 4.

ICCC Nursing Students Excel
on NCLEX
Biggest Little Paper In Town!
The students in the Iowa Central nursing program took the annual
National Council of Licensure Exam (NCLEX) and produced excellent
results. In total, 141 students took the exam for the first time and 132
passed for a sparkling 93.6 percent pass rate.
“We are very proud of how our students performed,” said Iowa
Central’s Dean of Health Science, Trina Staton. “The students know that
our classes are very rigorous for a reason. We want to get them ready for
the nursing profession.”
Both the Practical Nursing (PN) and Associate Degree Nursing (ADN)
students took the exams. A total of 42 PN students took the exam and 41
passed for a 97.6 percent pass rate. Ninety-nine ADN students took the
exam and 91 passed for a 91.9 percent pass rate.
Compared to the rest of the state and national averages, Iowa Central
was again impressive. The PN pass rate average for students taking the
exam in Iowa was 94.83 percent and the national average was 84.23
percent. The ADN average for Iowa was 90.24 percent and the national
average was 90.34 percent. Iowa Central’s students outperformed both the
state and national averages.
“I think the results show that our program is getting the students
prepared very well,” said Staton.
The NCLEX is the exam that anyone entering the nursing field must
pass before they can receive a license to work. The test is reviewed every
three years and changed to meet the evolving technology of the field. The
exams feature multiple choice questions in addition to audio and visual

analysis and short answer questions.

Maddie Aden and David Erickson
Exchange Vows
Maddie Aden of Pocahontas
and David Erickson of Pomeroy,
exchanged vows to consecrate their
marriage on June 30, 2012 at St.
John Lutheran Church in Pomeroy.
Witnessing the vows were parents of
the couple, Brian and Leslie Aden of
Pocahontas as well as Monte and Deb
Erickson of Pomeroy. In addition,
the attending grandparents were
John and Sharon Edmonds of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Wayne and Marilyn Aden of
Pocahontas, both grandparents of the bride. Flowers on the altar were in memory of the late
Carl and Elsie Erickson as well as Raymond and Anna Dallenbach, both grandparents of the
groom.
Serving as maid of honor, was cousin of the bride, Megan Aden. The bridesmaids, who
all wore classic black, tea-length dresses and pink satin shoes, were as follows: Mallory King
(friend), Jill Erickson (sister of groom), Kami Hetletvedt (friend), Brooke Aden (cousin
of bride), and Rae Barrett (friend). Dan Erickson, brother of the groom, served as best
man. Groomsmen, who sported black tuxedos with ivory shirts, included: Tom Patterson
(cousin of groom), Don Patterson (cousin of groom), Parker Aden (brother of bride), Alex
Aden (cousin of bride), and Shane Holtorf (friend). Garland carriers were Nick Erickson,
nephew of the groom and Caroline Harrison, friend of the bride. Aubrey Erickson, niece of
the groom, was the flower girl accompanied by the ring bearer and friend of the bride, Jack
Harrison. Helping the bride into her ivory gown with sweetheart neckline and her pink satin
shoes was personal attendant, Jill Patterson (cousin of the groom and friend of the bride).
As guests arrived, they were greeted by guest book attendants Amber Aden and Allison
Edmonds, both cousins of the bride. Guests were then seated by ushers Austin Aden,
Mitch Aden, and Avery Aden, all cousins of the bride. Among the green sprigs and pink
peony blossoms that lined the pews, were tall candelabras that were lit by Justin and
Marcus Wykoff, both nephews of the groom. Organist, Karen Bruns, set the mood with
processional music by Lorie Line, followed by “Canon in D” and “Trumpet Voluntary.”
Officiant, Pastor Mark Galbraith, was accompanied by homily presenter, Scott Essing.
Scripture readers included Susie Aden, aunt of the bride, and Tascha Wykoff, sister of the
groom. During the lighting of the unity candle, soloist, Mallory King, sang the song, “A
Thousand Years.”
Following the ceremony, the bridal party and guests joined in celebration at a reception
held at the Expo Center in Pocahontas and were greeted by dining room hosts and hostesses
Barry and Leah Aden, aunt and uncle of the bride as well as Fran and Mary Patterson, aunt
and uncle of the groom. Upon entering the Expo Center, one saw tables adorned with pink
rose petals, vintage votives as well as sparkling cider and pink moscato. The guests followed
the bridal party through a buffet style supper and danced away the evening.
The couple vacationed in the Dominican Republic for their honeymoon, and they now
reside in Pomeroy, Iowa. The bride, a graduate from the University of Northern Iowa, now
serves as an elementary teacher at South Central Calhoun Schools in Rockwell City, Iowa.
The groom graduated from Iowa State University with a business management degree and
currently raises livestock and farms.

Skillet Lasagna

1 T/ olive oil
3 garlic cloves, minced (or garlic
powder)
1 lb. ground turkey (or hamburger)
8 lasagna noodles, each broken into 4
pieces
1 (26 oz.) jar tomato sauce
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella (6 oz.)
3/4 c. ricotta (I used mozzarella)
Warm oil in a 12 inch. nonstick skillet
over medium-high heat. Add garlic
and cook until fragrant, 30 seconds to
1 minute. Add turkey, salt and pepper
and cook, breaking up meat into small
pieces with a wooden spoon, until it
loses its pink color, 3-5 minutes.
Scatter lasagna noodles over turkey.
Pour tomato sauce and 2 cups water
on top of noodles. Bring to a simmer,
and then reduce heat to low, cover
and cook at a low boil until noodles
are tender, stirring occasionally, 20-22
minutes.
Sprinkle 1 cup mozzarela onto
turkey and noodle mixture and stir
to combine. Remove pan from heat
and spoon heaping tablespoonfuls of
ricotta on top of lasagna. Sprinkle
with remaining mozzarella. Cover
and let stand until cheese is melted,
4-5 minutes. Serve hot. This is easy
and tasty.

3/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1 package vanilla cake mix
1 egg
2 1/2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
1 can coconut pecan frosting (ready
to spread kind)
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
½ cup chopped pecans
5 pds. white potatoes
3 T butter
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1/2 cup celery
1 pd cooked ham, diced
1 can chicken broth
1/4 cup real mayonnaise
1 cup Velveeta, cubed
salt and pepper to taste
Heat oven 350° F. Spray 15x10x1inch baking pan with non-stick
cooking spray. Place melted butter in
large bowl, reserve three tablespoons
of the cake mix; set aside. Add
remaining cake mix to butter; blend
well. Add egg; mix well. Stir in oats.
Press 2/3 of cake mix mixture (about
2 ½ cups) in bottom of sprayed pan.
Place frosting in microwave safe bowl
and heat on high for one minute.
Add reserved three tablespoons of
cake mix and stir until large lumps
disappear. Spread frosting mixture
over cake mix mixture in pan
and spread evenly. Sprinkle with
chocolate chips and pecans. Crumble
remaining cake mixture over frosting
mixture. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes
until top is golden brown and edges
are bubbly. Cool 1 ½ hours. Cut
into bars.
Partially cook potatoes; cool and
peel. Slice 1/4 inch thick and place in
a 2 quart casserole.
In a saucepan, melt butter and
stir in flour until well blended.
Add onion, celery, ham, broth,
mayonnaise and cubed cheese. Cook
and stir until thick. Season with salt
and pepper.
Pour ham and cheese mixture
over potatoes and toss gently. Bake at
275 F for 1-1/2 hours. Serves 10 to
12 people.

City Council Minutes
The Laurens City Council met in regular session at the Municipal Building at 5:00 pm, February 4,
2013. Mayor Pro-Tem, Gary Heuton , called the meeting to order. Present were Council members Clarence
Siepker, Rich Newgard, Steve Berry; City Manager, Barbara Smith; Public Works Director, Julian Johnsen;
Police Chief, Chris Toner; and City Attorney, Ann Beneke. Mayor Rod Johnson and Councilmen Ken Kunickis
were absent. Kunickis arrived at approximately 5:07 pm.
Councilman Newgard motioned to approve the consent agenda consisting of the agenda, minutes of the
January 21, 2013 meeting, and the list of claims. Berry seconded the motion. Ayes all; motion carried.
The fiscal year 2014 budget was discussed. The councilmen had no further questions or concerns
regarding the 2014 budget.
Siepker motioned, seconded by Newgard to authorize Barb Smith, City Manager; Joan Hoban, Deputy
City Clerk; Rod Johnson, Mayor; and Gary Heuton, Council Member to be the authorized signers on the CD at
Iowa Trust. Ayes all, motion carried.
The Chamber of Commerce would like to purchase banners for the light poles in the downtown area.
There will be 16 banners in all. Siepker motioned to allow the City employees to put the banners up one time in
the Spring, and take them down one tie in the Fall each year with the exact dates for each action to be
determined. Berry seconded the motion. Ayes all, motion carried.
