THE CITY
The City of Watauga is a desirable community in North Texas because of its low crime rate, highly-rated school districts, excellent
location and affordable housing. It is located minutes away from major interstate highways, DFW International Airport and Alliance
Airport. The City has about 24,000 residents and a dynamic business and residential community. It partners economic growth with
an outstanding civic atmosphere. In 2008, CNNMoney.com named Watauga as having the second best affordable housing in the
nation. Education is a major contributor to the quality of life in Watauga. The City is served by the
award winning Keller Independent School District (KISD) and Birdville Independent School District
(BISD).
The City of Watauga operates under a Home Rule Charter providing for the Council-Manager
form of government. The City is governed by a City Council composed of the Mayor and seven
(7) Council Members, all elected at large for two year terms. Watauga is a full-service city that
provides a wide range of municipal services including City Administration, City Secretary, Human
Resources, Information Technology, Utility Billing, Planning & Economic Development, Finance, Municipal Court, Police, Fire,
Animal Control, Library, Parks and Community Services.
Greg Vick serves as City Manager and brings over 35 years of progressive City Management experience along with a transparent
and participatory form of management. The management team is comprised of the City’s nine (9) department heads who enjoy a
cooperative working relationship.
THE POSITION
The Public Works Director is responsible for the operations of the Public Works, Code Enforcement and Fleet and Building
Maintenance divisions. The Public Works Director heads community revitalization efforts which have been prioritized in
Watauga’s City Council strategic plan. The Director plans, organizes and coordinates the activities of all Field Operations including
the repair and maintenance of the City’s streets, storm drain system, drainage channels, water and sewer system, fleet and city
buildings and structures. The incumbent is also responsible for community revitalization ; industrial, commercial and residential
building construction and inspection; and city code enforcement.
The Public Works Director manages 50 employees. Direct reports include the Fleet &
Facilities Manager, Building Official, Utility Superintendent and Public Works
Superintendent. Additional responsibilities include adherence to EPA and TCEQ
regulations and Storm Water Phase II mandates. The Director is also responsible for
Capital Improvement Projects, department budget, the Traffic Signals Program,
management of Oil Lease Agreements and Community Development Block Grant
(CDBG) projects.

THE POSITION
The City of Watauga is looking for a Public Works Director with a proven track record and strong credentials in the Public
Works field. The ideal candidate should have strong communication, presentation and public relations skills. Residency
within City limits is not required.
The ideal candidate will must be able to establish and maintain a positive working environment which results in quality, creativity and team work. The incumbent will need to hold employees accountable, yet also be approachable and a consensus
builder who creates a positive work environment. He/she will also maintain professional standards of the department with
the implementation of training programs for new and existing employees.
The candidate will need to assure fiscal responsibility and the creative use of limited resources. Watauga’s new Public
Works Director will prepare and update short and long range strategic plans to ensure the Department’s contribution to the
City’s overall plans and strategies.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
A successful candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field, a minimum of ten (10) years in public
works operations and at least five years of supervisory and management experience. Class C License in water operations and Class
II waste water operations through the Texas Commission on Environment Quality are highly desirable. Professional Engineering
registration in the State of Texas preferred.
COMPENSATION
Compensation is competitive and will depend on the qualifications of the successful applicant. Full-time employee benefits include 13 Paid Holidays, 15 Vacation Days and 15
Sick Days annually; Longevity Pay; Texas Municipal Retirement System - City matches
2:1, 5 years vesting; Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance , AD&D Insurance, and
Long Term Disability, which are provided at the City's expense. Additional benefits include a cell phone stipend and City vehicle for business use.
Salary Range is $100,000-$130,000 for well qualified applicants.
