Going to a museum — say an art museum or a natural history exhibit — generally immerses visitors in a
world of things they’ve never seen before. (Most people not having, say, a Van Gogh painting or a dinosaur
skeleton sitting in their living room).
But Andy Hershberger, associate curator of Geppi’s
Entertainment Museum, is hot on the trail of things
that people have had in their lives and living rooms,
particularly if they’ve grown up in Baltimore. And he’s
hoping local residents will help him out. After all, the
artifacts for this new exhibit would come from residents themselves.
“This is going to be a permanent floating exhibit that
celebrates Baltimore,” says Hershberger.
The exhibit, which is the brainchild of Missy Bowersox-Geppi, has not yet been set up, but museum officials are now on the hunt for items to fill it. And that’s
where local residents can help.
Got quirky Baltimore stuff? Maybe a silly souvenir
of a local event, a photo, a sign or ad for a local business — you name it, Geppi’s wants it. But only temporarily. You can have it back.

Have lunch with Santa at Salem Lutheran Church, 1530
Battery Ave., Saturday, Dec. 18, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Hot dogs
and pizza slices will be a buck apiece. Or wander down to
VFW Post 10078, 425 E. Fort Ave., where kids under 12
can tell Santa their wish list and get a goodie bag.
A toast to Tom Scilipoti, son of St. Leo’s
School, former barber, and photographer of
events large and small, significant and not-so, in
East Baltimore for the last six decades and
more.
In December 1950, Tom shot a picture of a
benefit in Little Italy for the Italian Boys Town.
It was published in the East Baltimore Guide on
Thursday, Dec. 14, 1950.
It was the beginning of a beautiful relationship. Since then, Tom has shot pictures of everyday life in his city—pavers working with steam-

Tom’s lifelong love of his city is apparent

Community unites to provide gifts for neighborhood kids
The Exchange Club of Highlandtown and
Canton, St. Casimir’s School, the Southeastern District Police and Baltimore Guide
readers teamed up to provide truckloads of
toys for neighborhood kids whose families
have fallen on hard times.
Despite the recession, Eastsiders dug deep
in their pockets to buy toys and games for
children of all ages.
Shown at right is the student council at St.
Casimir School. Students at St. Cas filled a
hallway at the school with toys. Meanwhile,
members of the Exchange Club stood in the
cold for hours accepting toys in O’Donnell
Square. The Southeastern District will distribute the toys.
The Exchange Club, and an anonymous
donor at Our Lady of Pompei, will provide
Christmas dinners to more than 250 families.
Thanks to everyone who contributed to a
merrier Christmas for all.

Residents of the 100 block of N. Curley
St. got together Saturday morning for a little
coffee, donuts and tree-planting. The neighbors, with the help and advice of the Parks
and People Foundation, planted 27
Armstrong maple trees, a fast-growing tree
that can reach 50 feet in height. The leaves
turn red and yellow in the fall.

Get the goods
on local holiday goodies for giving
by JACQUELINE WATTS
[email protected]
If there is anything that strikes more
fear into the hearts of American women
than trying on swimsuits, it’s the holiday cookie exchange. There’s not
enough time to bake, and if you do
bake it’s a sure bet that a) your oven
will go up; or b) that you will get distracted and leave your cookies to bake
till the cinder stage; or c) you will get
to the end of a recipe sometime around
1:30 a.m. and find that you are out of
vanilla.
Not to mention the fact cookie
exchanges are more cutthroat than
speed dating or the Black Friday sale
at Wal-Mart.
So what do you do when someone
Get a jump-start to your New Year!
proposes a cookie exchange?
You cheat, that’s what you do.
Grab your plastic and take advantage
of the many artisan bakeries in our
area, offering everything from cupcakes to cookies to cakes to ethnic
favorites.
For instance:
Holiday themed cupcakes from
Caroline’s Cupcakery, 1433 E. Fort
Ave., Locust Point: High-end cupcakes
are all the rage, and Caroline’s can
soothe your cupcake craving, from the
red velvet with the silky buttercream
icing ($3) to the snowman and Christmas
tree cupcakes ($4). Also try the pumpkin ($3), available seasonally. Cupcakes
are baked and decorated on the premises.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN
(Never known to fail)
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine,
splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God.
Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh,
Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are
my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of
Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are
none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein
you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin,
pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother,
I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you
who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain
my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and
forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my
life you are with me, I want this prayer to thank you for
all things as you confirm once again that I never want to
be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for
your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say
this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request
will be granted. This prayer must be published after the
favor is granted. M.M.H.

Hi, Santa, it’s Kaleb. This year, I have been a
very good boy and have caught on pretty
well to this whole potty training business.
My list is short this year; all I would like are
some toys. And don’t you worry — cookies, milk and carrots will be waiting for you
and your reindeers. Thanks, Santa.
Kaleb, age 2-1/2
P.S. Remember the magic key; we don’t have
a chimney.
Dear Santa,
My name is Mason and I am 2 years old. A
lot has changed this year for me. I use the
potty now so do you think you could bring
me some of those cool kid, big boy underwear? I have been kinda good and was
hoping you could drop me off a “Stinky
Garbage Truck” — he’s so awesome. Oh
yeah and one more thing, can you bring me
a kitchen set? I would really like to make my
mom and dad some “pantakes.” Thanks for
everything, Santa.
Love,
Mason
P.S. Your cookies and milk will be on the
table.
Dear Santa Clause,
How are you doing? I am doing good.

Kruschiki from Traditions by Pamela:
Pamela Skaw, a Canton native of Irish and
Polish extraction, knows her kruschiki, the
little Polish bowtie cookies dusted with powdered sugar. A proper kruschiki should shatter when you bite it, and after a few the happy
eater should wear a dusting of powdered
sugar just like the cookies do. Pamela’s
bowties are crisp and delicate and delightful
and are available at Ostrowski’s Famous
Polish Sausage, 524 S. Washington St.
Need an elegant gift for a wine lover? Try
her wine or liqueur truffles, $11/doz. The
dark, rich, sinful chocolate truffles pair wonderfully with—you guessed it—wine, and are
available at V-no, 905 S. Ann St. in Fells
Point.
She also offers cakes, pies, candied nuts,
cookies, and a host of other confections.
Order by phone, 443-473-9625.
Planning an elegant party, or just need a
few things for a brunch? Try Canton
Bakery, where all kinds of sweet delicacies
are produced on-site. Proprietor Mohammed
Iqbal learned the baking trade in France, and
it shows. He also produces daily breads such
as bagels, muffins, donuts and more.
The long case at the corner bakery is
loaded with fancy cakes, cheesecakes, chocolate mousse mice, pies and cookies.
The bakery also offers a full carryout
menu, so if you are in the mood for a cheese
steak along with your cheesecake, you’re
good to go.

THE BALTIMORE GUIDE 23
By Andrew Mindzak
You’ve gotta be kidding me. Another fourth
quarter lead down the drain. This lead,
however, looked to be insurmountable after watching their first half domination of
the Houston Texans. Maybe next week they
should just try playing from behind in the
fourth quarter. This one, luckily, went the
Ravens’ way (It’s about time!).
Baltimore jumped out to an early 7-0 lead
thanks to a first quarter touchdown run
from Willis McGahee. That lead grew to
14-0 courtesy of a touchdown pass from Joe
Flacco to Derrick Mason, and then the two
hooked up again about four minutes later
to put Baltimore up 21-0. A late touchdown
pass from Texans’ QB Matt Schaub to Andre Johnson cut the lead to 21-7 at the half.
The second half looked to be much of the
same from Baltimore as David Reed returned the opening kickoff 103 yards to put
the Ravens up 28-7. Then, just like that, Baltimore vanished faster than a bottle of Grey
Goose at the Lohan residence.
Neil Rackers hit two field goals in the third
quarter to pull Houston to within 28-13.
Then came the fourth quarter.
Schaub hit Jacoby Jones for a score with six
minutes left, and then with only 21 seconds
left and the Ravens‘ defense gasping for air,
Schaub found Johnson in the end zone again
to bring the Texans within two before they
nailed the two point conversion to tie the
game.
The Texans final two drives of the game
were 99 yards and 95 yards against the Baltimore defense.
Luckily for the Ravens they won the coin
toss in overtime and received the ball, because their defense was gassed. After being
on the field for over 19 minutes in the second
half and giving up 306 yards of offense in
the second half, the offense needed to give
their defense a rest.
With that being said, the Ravens’ offense
didn’t do much as they gained only ten yards
on six plays and punted away. Sam Koch,
who might as well have been the MVP for
the game, pinned the Texans deep yet again,
at their own nine yard line.
This time, the Baltimore defense dialed up
the pressure and rattled Schaub on the first
play causing an incomplete pass. The very
next play, more pressure from the Ravens’
front four forced Schaub to throw an errant
pass that was picked off by Josh Wilson who
promptly returned it for the game winning
touchdown.
Flacco had a solid but unspectacular game,
completing 22 of 33 passes for 235 yards and
two scores. Mason had a great game, hauling in six passes for 78 yards and a pair of
TD’s. Ray Rice had a combined 120 rushing
and receiving yards as well.
Schaub had himself a great game minus the
game ending pick, threw for 393 yards, and
Johnson caught nine passes for 140 yards
and two scores. Even running back Arian
Foster ran 20 times for 100 yards against the
Ravens defense.
I’m not sure what needs to be done to their
defense to help them get in games, but one
thing is for sure, the Ravens offensive line
needs to do a better job up front. Rice ran
19 times for 54 yards and Flacco was sacked
five times and was under a decent amount
of pressure.
Next up for Baltimore are the reigning
champs, the New Orleans Saints. If they
thought the Texans offense was good, wait
‘til you see Drew Brees!
