What is a Qualifying Event?
In order to buy a Marketplace health insurance plan outside the open enrollment period,
you must have a qualifying life event. Qualifying life events that create a special enrolment
period include: Getting married; having, adopting, or placement of a child; permanently
moving to a new area that offers different health plan options; losing health coverage (for
example due to a job loss, divorce, loss of eligibility for Medicaid or CHIP, expiration
of COBRA coverage, or a health plan being decertified); and people already enrolled in
Marketplace coverage, having a change in income or household status that affects eligibility
for tax credits or cost-sharing reductions. Voluntarily quitting other health coverage or being
terminated for not paying your premiums is not considered loss of coverage.
What are Special Enrollment Periods?
If you have a qualifying life event, you get a special enrollment period. This means you can
enroll or change your health insurance plan outside the open enrollment period. Special
enrollment periods last 60 days from the date of the qualifying event.
Do you or someone you know, have a Qualifying Event and eligible for a Special
Enrollment Period?
Contact our Navigator at (607)772-8860 at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss if your
qualifying event makes you eligible for a special enrollment period and what your options
may be.
Small Businesses:
If you own a Small Business and you are thinking about offering insurance to your employees,
or if your business has an enrollment period during the year, open enrollment for the Small
Business Marketplace is ongoing for the entire year of 2014. In order to know what all of your
options may be going forward, contact our Navigator at The Chamber.
Open Enrollment Period:
The next proposed open enrollment period is November 15, 2014 and lasts until January 15,
2015. This would be in order to obtain health insurance for 2015.
Contact our Navigator at (607)772-8860 at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss what options
you may have or if you would like to enroll your Small Business into the SHOP Marketplace.

With the start of hurricane season this week, the Internal Revenue Service encourages
individuals and businesses to safeguard their records against natural disasters by taking a
few simple steps.
Create a Backup Set of Records Electronically
Taxpayers should keep a set of backup records in a safe place. The backup should be
stored away from the original set. Keeping a backup set of records –– including, for example, bank statements, tax returns, insurance policies, etc. –– is easier now that many
financial institutions provide statements and documents electronically, and much financial
information is available on the Internet. Even if the original records are provided only on
paper, they can be scanned into an electronic format. With documents in electronic form,
taxpayers can save them to the cloud, download them to a backup storage device, like an
external hard drive or USB flash drive, or burn them to a CD or DVD.
Document Valuables
Another step a taxpayer can take to prepare for disaster is to photograph or videotape the
contents of his or her home, especially items of higher value. The IRS has a disaster loss
workbook, Publication 584, which can help taxpayers compile a room-by-room list of belongings. A photographic record can help an individual prove the market value of items
for insurance and casualty loss claims. Photos should be stored with a friend or family
member who lives outside the area.
Update Emergency Plans
Emergency plans should be reviewed annually. Personal and business situations change
over time as do preparedness needs. When employers hire new employees or when a company or organization changes functions, plans should be updated accordingly and employees should be informed of the changes.
Check on Fiduciary Bonds
Employers who use payroll service providers should ask the provider if it has a fiduciary
bond in place. The bond could protect the employer in the event of default by the payroll
service provider.
IRS Ready to Help
If disaster strikes, an affected taxpayer can call 1-866-562-5227 to speak with an IRS specialist trained to handle disaster-related issues.
Back copies of previously-filed tax returns and all attachments, including Forms W-2, can
be requested by filing Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return. Alternatively, transcripts showing most line items on these returns can be ordered on-line, by calling 1-800908-9946 or by using Form 4506T-EZ, Short Form Request for Individual Tax Return
Transcript or Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return.

Include Branding
as Part of
Your Marketing Strategy
A great product or first-class service is seldom enough to sustain a
lasting impression among your customers. In today’s competitive market, a great branding strategy will help ensure that customers remember your business as the “go-to” source for their needs.
A branding strategy includes your company’s name, logo, symbols,
Web site, and other tools that define your small business in the minds
of consumers and, perhaps more importantly, differentiates it from
others providing the same products or services in your target market.
According to marketing experts such as Laura Ries, president of the
Atlanta-based Ries & Ries marketing firm, branding and marketing
go hand-in-hand.
“If you can build a powerful brand you will have a powerful marketing program,” Ries says. “If you can’t, then all the advertising,
fancy packaging, sales promotions and PR in the world won’t help you
succeed.”
Almost anything can be branded, including you. But branding is complex and involves the customer’s total experience with you, your product
or your service. The most effective branding combines both online and
off-line elements. The Web offers tremendous opportunities for promoting
your brand, through low-cost search engine ads or interactive features on
your Web site.
Keep in mind that the best brands tend to tap emotions and appeal to
a person’s natural need for involvement. Be original in identifying your
brand identity—the thing that truly sets your small business apart. Everybody touts quality and service, for example, so look for something that’s
really different. If you are having trouble pinpointing a branding message,
try asking your customers what they need from you the most. Then base
your brand on that.
Your brand should also last a long time, so avoid elements or catch
phrases linked to trends likely to disappear or become outdated. Simplicity is also a virtue in your branding message. Buyers are overwhelmed by
excess information. Too much information confuses your brand message.
A number of resources can help you understand and craft a sound
branding strategy, including: The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding. Written by market guru Al Ries and daughter Laura, this smart and accessible
book includes 11 Immutable Laws of Internet Branding. Peter Montoya’s
The Brand Called You offers ideas and advice on how entrepreneurs can
promote themselves, personally, as a brand. Australian branding expert
Martin Lindstrom also offers an extensive library of branding articles on
his Web site, www.martinlindstrom.com.

It’s Not Too Late to Think about
Applying for GBEOP’s Leadership Program - BLI;
Applications are Due August 1
BLI Class of 2014
Raises Record Amount for OurSpace
The BLI class of 2014 hosted a trivia night fundraiser
at the Son’s of Italy in Endicott to benefit OurSpace,
an important community initiative that seeks to revitalize
Recreation Park in the City of Binghamton,
with the focus on accessibility for individuals
of all ages and needs. The evening consisted of food
from Lupo’s, Nirchi’s, Roma’s and Frito Lay,
team trivia by D. Mosher Entertainment,
a bake sale, 50/50 raffles, door prizes
and a basket raffle featuring over 40 baskets
donated by local businesses.
There were 130 people in attendance, and the BLI class raised $5,500 to benefit this project, the most of any BLI class!
Eggs & Issues
Thank you to Sponsor,
Cushman & Wakefield/Pyramid Brokerage Company,
for the June 5 Eggs & Issues on Start UP NY.
A large group was on hand for this topic.
A special thanks to our panelists:
Kevin Drumm, PhD, President, SUNY Broome
Robert Murphy, Director of Economic Development, City of Binghamton
Per Stromhaug, PhD, MBA, Binghamton University
BLI, now going into its 28th year, is a highly
respected community leadership training and
development program offered through the
Greater Binghamton Education Outreach
Program (GBEOP), a non-profit affiliate organization of the Greater
Binghamton Chamber of Commerce. The Broome Leadership Institute was
created under the belief that the future prosperity of a community lies in its
people. The goal of the program is to identify people who are interested in
playing a key role in making Greater Binghamton the best that it can be.
The benefits are tremendous: meeting with key decision-makers face-to-face;
gaining a broader understanding of the issues affecting life in our region; learning
new skills and making invaluable professional contacts; gaining the knowledge,
experience and contacts needed to make a positive difference in our community;
and experiencing fun along the way.
The BLI program begins with a teambuilding retreat on September 19
and meets for a full day on the first, third and fifth Thursday of each
month through mid-March. Only 20 diverse applicants are accepted, so we
encourage you to apply early since space is limited. There is a fee involved
for successful applicants: $1,250 for Chamber members, $1,500 for nonmembers. Scholarships are available through funding raised by the BLI Alumni
Association. Applications are due on August 1.
Here’s what some of the recent BLI grads are saying
about their experience:
“BLI is a great, eye-opening experience that provides
opportunities to visit a variety of influential people, places,
businesses, industries and charities within our local
community. It has been invaluable to participate in this
experience to help better appreciate the passion, drive and
efforts of others to make us a stronger, more caring
community. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing this
experience with the members of the class of 2014. With the
knowledge I have gained through BLI, I plan to be
engaged on a larger scale to help those less fortunate and
to make this the best place in the world to live. I want to lead others to take an
active part as well.”
David L. Hansen, Department Manager / Project Manager / Engineer,
Stantec (BLI ’14)
“Having lived in this area all my life, the Broome
Leadership Institute has introduced me to numerous area
professionals, and expanded my knowledge of the vast
array of businesses and organizations that work to keep
this area viable. I also better understand the challenges
facing our community and how we as leaders can work
together to overcome those challenges. I would highly
recommend this program to any professional laying down
roots in this area – it will completely change your view of
Broome County and all of the wonderful opportunities that
this community has to offer.”
Nicole Leonard, Community Relations Coordinator, ACHIEVE (BLI ‘14)
Thank you to our Moderator,
Kenneth Kamlet, Attorney-at-Law,
Hinman, Howard & Kattell, LLP
“After graduating from Binghamton University, I decided
to remain and build a life in Broome County because the
area provided a strong sense of community. BLI taught me
to look outside of myself and the small “bubble” I live in,
and helped open my eyes to all of the hard work it takes to
build each aspect of our community. BLI also taught me
that, no matter where you work or what you do, we’re all
in this together.”
Lana D. Sturdevant, Associate Attorney,
Levene Gouldin & Thompson, LLP (BLI ‘14)
BLI Alumni Spotlight
The BLI Alumni Spotlight is a feature
developed by the Communications Committee
of the BLI Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Name: Bob Stezzi
BLI Graduation Year: 1994
Company/Organization: Bob Stezzi Training
and Consulting
Job Title: Founder and President
E-mail address: [email protected]
Tell us briefly about yourself and please update your classmates on
your personal/professional experiences since graduating from BLI:
Established Bob Stezzi Training & Consulting in 1995 and have been
developing and conducting leadership development and professional
skills workshops and individual coaching throughout the U.S. Our
family is growing – we were blessed with our first grandchild, Nico,
last November.
Favorite Books/Movies: I love learning, laughing, and challenging
the imagination, so just about any book on leadership, personal
effectiveness, comedy, science, and science fiction (Blanchard,
Johnson, Covey, Goleman, Maxwell, Chomsky, Adams, Clark, Herbert,
Pohl, Niven, Pournelle). Not that many movies and very little TV.
Current and Past Notable Civic Activities: American Society for
Training and Development, Better Business Bureau of Upstate New
York.
Interests/Hobbies: Anything outdoors, all kinds of music, reading,
writing, physical training, scale modeling, flying and skydiving.
How did your BLI experience change your perception of the
community? Being raised in Philadelphia (which was great), I fell in
love with upstate NY – the great people, the pace of life, the beautiful
countryside. Being new to the area, BLI really jumpstarted my
familiarity with the people and organizations that make this area great,
and the things they are doing to keep us moving upwards.
How did your BLI experience motivate you to become more
involved in the community? BLI introduces you to ways you can be
involved that you might not otherwise know about, and the examples of
your classmates help motivate you as well.
What was your most memorable BLI activity/moment? Hard to
pick one because every session and activity was interesting, fun, and
worthwhile.
What was the most valuable benefit to you from your BLI
experience? The more I got to know my classmates, the more ways I
found to challenge myself both professionally and personally.
What “nugget of wisdom” do you have for your fellow BLI alum?
Leadership is learned. Continue to be a student of leadership.

Greater Binghamton Chamber’s “Business of the Week”
Affordable Advertising
Each week, the Greater Binghamton Chamber randomly selects a chamber member business, which is named “Business of the Week”. The
business is spotlighted for one business week (M-F). The “Business of the Week” receives: a personal visit from Chamber representatives, the
week-long display of a stylish, prominent sign that formally announces their recognition, photo opportunities and an announcement on the
home page of the Chamber’s website.
Our “Business of the Week” program, sponsored by Visions Federal Credit Union, is another opportunity to show our appreciation to
Chamber members for supporting the Greater Binghamton Chamber of Commerce and investing in our community, as well as for Chamber staff to better familiarize ourselves with our
members. We want to learn more about their company, how it fits in to our regional community, and how we can best serve their business.

Friends of the Broome County
Public Library
Founded in 1967, the Friends of the
Broome County Public Library is an
all- volunteer non-profit organization.
Our mission is to promote interest in
the library and its services and provide
support for its programs. Our volunteer
activities range from book reviews and
book sales to maintaining the Reading
Garden. Membership is open to anyone
with an interest in community involvement
and a passion for reading.
Best known for our book sales, we also
operate a gift shop located in the rotunda of
the library. The gift shop carries a variety
of merchandise including greeting cards,
candy and toys and of course, books! We
have a large selection of audio books,
recent fiction and non- fiction, and DVD’s
at reasonable prices. The gift shop is open
most afternoons and during the book sales.
All proceeds from our book sales and
the gift shop are used to support library
programs and events. The Friends of the
Library is the proud sponsor of the Summer
Reading program run by the Youth Services
Department. Last year approximately
1,500 children were involved. We also fund
the purchase of reference materials, new
computers, furniture, community outreach
materials and special programs not covered
by the library’s budget.
The support of our mission by the triple
cities community has played a large part
in our success. Our membership in the
Chamber has helped our organization
reach a wider audience. Seminars focused
on small business issues have been really
helpful to us. We look forward to future
opportunities for networking through
Chamber events.

Rogers Industrial Specialists
Our primary business is rigging and
industrial relocation. Within that realm of
work, we also provide a variety of crane,
warehousing and transportation services,
which allows us to be recognized as a full
service company.
Our business was incorporated in 1999.
Being a specialized company, has allowed
us to better focus on the ever changing
and demanding challenges of the core
services that we provide. Our customers are
paramount to us and any requests for service
are never considered too big or too small.
We have recently relocated to our newly
expanded and renovated office space.
This endeavor was in the planning and
remodeling phase for some time. This
expansion allows us to free up needed
space in our storage area and to better
facilitate storage and office operation for
management and control of the company.
Our Mission Statement is and always has
been: “Rogers Industrial/Crane Specialists
will consistently deliver value-added
services to all of our customers, exceeding
their expectations. Above all we will earn
the confidence of our clients through a
continued commitment to excellence and
total customer satisfaction.”
All of our employees are responsible
for attaining our mission by: complete
customer satisfaction, superior quality
services, continual improvement, teamwork,
and building and maintaining a positive
corporate image within our community.
Our company owner, Jerry Rogers, is
extremely civic minded and has volunteered
manpower and equipment to assist in
community projects whenever requested.
To name just a few of the more recent
events and memorials: Dick’s Sporting
Goods Champions Golf Tournament,
American Civic Association Memorial at
Front and Clinton Streets, 9-11 Monument,
Government Plaza, Binghamton, Vietnam
Memorial at the Broome County Veterans
Memorial Arena, sponsorship of local youth
activities and sponsorship of many Police
Agencies Specialized Programs.
It is our feeling that being a member of
the Greater Binghamton Chamber of
Commerce is being part of “Who’s Who”
in the business world for this area. Being a
member also allows the community to be
advised of our services when our help is
required. Being selected as your “Business
of the Week” gives us added exposure
through your newsletter.

material handling equipment touches
everything around you—the clothes you
wear, the food you eat, the car you drive,
almost everything around you has been
touched by a forklift at one point or another.
The Raymond Corporation was established
in 1922 when our founder George Raymond
Sr. purchased Lyons Iron Works, a foundry
that was establish here in Greene, NY, in
the 1800’s. Raymond has been an innovator
since the early beginnings of this company,
patenting the first hand pallet truck, as well
as the first double-faced wooden pallet in
1934. George Raymond Sr. then donated
the patent from the double-faced wooden
pallet back to the industry for all to use.
Today, Raymond is part of the Toyota
family and is a significant contributor to
Toyota Material Handling Group’s over $7
billion dollar business.
The Raymond Corporation has been
experiencing record performance and
growth, and as a result, we have almost
doubled our employment in the last three
years. Raymond’s success is a tribute to our
dedicated and hard-working employees.
Raymond is also dedicated to investing in
our employees’ development, as well as our
current and future leadership, which is the
true foundation of our company. Raymond
collaborates with local high schools,
colleges, and universities to help develop
our future workforce by teaching them
relevant skills for future success. Raymond
is also a leading corporate citizen within
our community donating to over 80 local
non-profits organizations in our area.
By being a member of the Greater
Binghamton Chamber of Commerce,
Raymond is able to participate in
various programs that help shape greater

HOLIDAY
June 2 – 6, 2014
YMCA of Broome County
The Y focuses on youth development,
healthy living and social responsibility.
We currently offer over 100 different
programs that range from all day child
care, to safe, affordable housing for the
homeless man looking to reintegrate
into society; we offer summer camps,
after school programs and swim lessons
through to Chronic disease assistance and
senior focused wellness programming.
We believe that by meeting the needs of
our neighbors, we will help strengthen the
foundations of the community we live in.
The YMCA of Broome County was
established in 1865 to offer housing to
men working on the railroad. As times
and community needs have changed, so
have our programs and services. Now,
embarking on our 150th anniversary year,
we offer two full facilities, numerous offsite program locations and serve all our
neighbors, irrelevant of their demographic.
The Y is a non-profit charitable organization
that annually gives back over $450,000 in
services each year to our community. We
never turn anyone away for financial barriers
and as such will scholarship any person
proving a need. Each year we impact the lives
of over 15,000 local people and will continue
to meet the needs of thousands more as needs
arise. To some we are just a ‘swim and gym’,
but to all those who tell us how their life has
been positively impacted by the work of the
Y, we are clearly so much more.
Partnerships and collaborations have
proven a successful approach for the
Y for a long time. We are not here to
compete for business; we are here to
serve our community. By being a member
of the Greater Binghamton Chamber
of Commerce, we have been able to
continually develop and build upon local
connections that have ultimately allowed us
to help and serve more of our neighbors.
