Its central location and the extraordinary depth
of its hospitality facilities, culture, sport and
attractions make Lausanne the destination of
everyone’s dreams. Anything is possible here
because we are in a position to offer it and,
above all, to free organisers from any worries
about arrangements, schedules, management
and entertainment.
The attraction of the Lake Geneva Region is its
geographical diversity: peaceful lake shores,
forested hills, green meadows, mountains and a
vineyard listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site
are facets of its captivating landscape. The city
of Lausanne runs a dynamic urban marketing
campaign based around four images, four beacons of excellence of international repute: education and research, sport, culture and sustainable development.
Hotels of style and tradition of hospitality
Well versed in the art of combining first-class
charm, amenities and services, some of Lausanne’s
hotels are luxury establisments among the best
in the world. From large business hotels to
charming little ones, there is a wide spectrum of
comfort and gastronomy. Congress and seminar
delegates have also been privileged clients for a
long time, thanks to the contribution of internationally renowned graduate schools in the
fields of science (EPFL), medicine (CHUV) and
management (IMD, EHL).
and sporting events. A destination of culture,
history and gastronomic seduction: our office
organises made-to-measure unforgettable shared
experiences!
Olympic Capital
The centre of the Lake Geneva Region on the
shores of Europe’s largest freshwater lake, Lausanne
is also the capital of the canton of Vaud. The
headquarters of the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) since 1915 and Olympic Capital
since 1994, it is home to over 20 international
sports federations and the only Olympic museum
in the world.
Lausanne innovates constantly, so the suggestions and ideas given in this guide represent
only a fraction of the possibilities on offer. Our
office will advise you and is able to organise all
or part of your project while incorporating the
themes of your choice.
Summer and winter recreational
and incentive programmes
From water sports to mountain activities, from
sweet idleness to hyperactivity, every year
Lausanne offers its visitors more than 400 cultural

By its central geographical location, Switzerland is an ideal international
destination for business, incentive and leisure travel.
Switzerland is a country with many different facets. It unites an impressive
variety of landscapes in a small geographical area and benefits from an exceptional natural heritage. As an important centre for communication and transport between the countries of Northern and Southern Europe, it has a common frontier with Germany, France, Italy, and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
The Alpine Arc, just a few kilometres away from Lausanne, features some of
the finest mountain peaks like the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc or the Jungfrau,
and spectacular passes: Grimsel, St Gotthard, Simplon and Great St Bernard.
Two rivers have their source here: the Rhône and the Rhine.
These natural assets are further enhanced by security and dependability,
Swiss values par excellence.

ARRIVING
IN LAUSANNE
Like Switzerland, Lausanne benefits from regular and direct access from all
over the world via two international airports. As distances are very short,
visitors can enjoy changing scenery and atmosphere in a matter of minutes
at the heart of the European road network (A1/E25 and A9/E27), on one of
the most compact railway networks in the world (CFF on the Geneva–Zurich
services, TGV and EC direct to Paris and Milan), by air (45 minutes from
Geneva-Cointrin International Airport), or even by water thanks to the ships
operated by the Compagnie Générale de Navigation on Lake Geneva. Whatever the number of participants, the different means of local transport (bus,
metro, taxi) are reliable and efficient, whilst ensuring that transfers are
quick and comfortable.

SERVICE
LAUSANNE TOURISME & CONVENTION BUREAU
Your host and partner agency
Plan your success
The success of a professional event or of a motivational trip often rests on the ability to
profit from every minute. Reputable training centres are an integral part of the provision in
a city traditionally geared towards hosting business people. Apart from the third largest
congress centre in Switzerland and a wide range of hotel accommodation, Lausanne offers
you a selection of infrastructures ensuring efficient organisation and a range of exceptional
recreational activities.
Your event, made in Lausanne: congresses, seminars & incentives
Lausanne Tourisme & Convention Bureau is a private association that is recognised as the
official tourism office of the city of Lausanne. It is your first point of contact and your
favoured partner if you wish to organise an international or national meeting, a congress,

service, the Convention Bureau offers the global or partial organisation of your event and
links the logistics of your meeting with official events or leisure activities.
Lausanne, a beacon of excellence

infrastructures
Lausanne offers a wide range of hotels
characterised by their diversity and quality, from its 5-star hotels to its youth
hostel. Over 5,000 beds are available to
suit your preferences. The city’s luxury
hotels are regarded as among the best
in the world and promote a sense of wellbeing thanks to their exceptional spas,
as well as large hotel chains and small
hotels full of charm, budget hotels and
hostels in the country… The range is
wide and varied because Lausanne benefits from a historic tradition of hospitality. In order to facilitate trips for business purposes, most of the hotels have
conference rooms and specially equipped
rooms for hosting business clients.
In the past few years, Lausanne’s hoteliers have invested enormously in renovation in order to offer ideal conditions
to their guests. The hotel sector of the
whole region is also moving forward: new
establishments such as the StarlingHotel
at EPFL by the lake are springing up as
part of current large urban development
projects of the Vaudois capital.

A modern and spacious Congress
and Exhibition Centre
Beaulieu Lausanne dominates
Lausanne whilst being close to the
city centre and the airport. In a
peaceful parkland setting, with
views over the Alps and the Cité,
it offers congress delegates ideal
working conditions. Combining
style and technology for events of
any size, its architecture designed
to be airy in an elegant building
bathed in daylight, Beaulieu Lausanne offers state-of-the-art technological equipment. Fixed or
modular, combining warm wood
shades and the lightness of glass,
the rooms play the ace card of flexibility and can be adapted to the
size of your event.
A theatre and a cinema
But Beaulieu Lausanne offers even
more. With its 1,850-seat theatre
26
welcoming famous faces such as
Arthur Rubinstein, Sidney Bechet
and Phil Collins, it serves equally
well as a setting for both entertainment and business. In fact, the
theatre is perfectly adapted to any
type of large-scale conference or
meeting. The cinema is smaller
with a modular stage system and a
variety of layouts, and is capable
of holding up to 650 people.
Visitor safety, a leitmotiv
The safety and peace of guests are
leitmotivs at Beaulieu Lausanne.
All access can be controlled,
whether at the gates to the underground car park, at the entrances
to the site or at those to the many
rooms and halls on the site – an
asset particularly in evidence during major events such as general
meetings held by multinationals.

The University of Lausanne is
based by the lake in the magnificent Dorigny park. There you will
benefit both from an infrastructure
created specifically for seminars
and conferences, and from a university campus setting that is
utterly exceptional in terms of its
beauty, its access to Lake Geneva
and its century-old trees.
The different conference rooms at
UNIL are spread around its site and
provide seating capacity for 20 to
800 people. The biggest auditorium is in the Amphimax building,
which can be divided into 2 sec-
30
tions of 300 and 500 places. These
dimensions give rise to a revised
concept of the notion of an
auditorium: efficient audiovisual
resources and screens replace
blackboards, whilst there is now no
need to be facing in the direction
of a central speaker. These conditions provide for new layout options: the floor can be horizontal
and mobile desks distributed freely
in line with requirements. Seminar
rooms and a new 400-seater
cafeteria round off this programme, which covers a total area
of 8,255 m2.

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne is a leadingedge institution of global repute.
Situated on the shores of the lake
on the university campus, which
houses over 17,000 students and
5,000 researchers, the EPFL is a
small town of entirely south-facing
terraces. There is a perpetual buzz
about the site; in spring 2010, it
will inaugurate its new place of
learning information and life, the
Rolex Learning Center, whose
architecture is an outstanding feat
of technology, and a 4-star hotel
with 154 rooms. The Institute is
also working hard on the construction of the biggest solar park in
Switzerland. It is possible to enjoy
the benefits of this unique setting
for the organisation of seminars,
conferences and meetings by hiring rooms with seating capacity for
up to 600 people. These places are
equipped with the high-tech facilities in which the Institute specialises, and are available when no

THEMED EVENINGS
Leaving a lasting memory in the minds of your guests is a challenge that you
will meet effortlessly thanks to the multitude of places steeped in a special
atmosphere that you will uncover in Lausanne and throughout the region.
With its rich history, the region offers a wide choice of medieval castles and
small manor houses for the organisation of an event, both by day and by
night. These unusual places, located in a rural or vineyard setting and, for
the most part, listed national heritage sites, confer a special ambiance on
your event and leave a stamp of success on it.
The most adventurous people can also choose from unusual hospitality
venues offering to combine their themes with gastronomy: art museums, a
theatre school, a salt mine, a covered market and a high-altitude restaurant
invite you to stage your banquets, seminars and meetings there.
These venues have high-tech infrastructures and may be enhanced by a
programme of classical, popular or traditional folk entertainment.

the land. Along the way, tasting cellars, typical auberges and restaurants

M
MUSEUMS
In Lausanne, the public consumes culture in the same way as others do
vitamins. With the help of large public subsidies, the city has gained in the
popularity stakes all over Europe and justifiably so: 23 museums feed the
voracious appetite for culture in a city of less than 150,000 inhabitants.
Thanks to the initiative of some enlightened people and to the favourable
political context in Switzerland during the 20th century, some establishments have become genuine cultural institutions with international influence. These include the Art Brut Collection, for a long time the only one in
the world to recognise the status of art in spontaneous works by fringe
artists, and The Olympic Museum, a global centre of information on this
international sporting movement. These few examples do not, however,
eclipse the host of other exhibitions offered in Lausanne and appearing in
museums of astonishing quality and diversity: Fine Arts, Applied Arts, Photography, History, Sports and Sciences. With everyone’s interests represented in a single city, all you have to do is allow yourself to be carried
away by the universe of the museum of your choosing.

Lausanne exerts a special appeal owing to its absolutely exceptional cultural
depth: a very fine opera, a host of theatres, including the Théâtre de VidyLausanne, European Theatre Space, high-quality music and, of course,
dance, most notably with the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, which is based in the
city. But Lausanne also has avant-garde scenes, jazz cellars and an awesome
number of festivals, with every single taste catered for!
From June to September, Lausanne is in full swing: under the banner of
“Lausanne Estivale”, over 400 shows and recreational activities – theatre,
dance, walks, storytelling and every kind of music – are a regular feature of
urban life for the people of Lausanne! An extravaganza of cultural events,
fun and entertainment for visitors of all ages and from all backgrounds,
most of them free of charge.
At the beginning of July, Lausanne hosts a multicultural event that is
unique in Europe: the Festival de la Cité. In the old town and around
the cathedral, some 200 free open-air attractions are given in eight days: theatre performances, dance, concerts, cabaret, comedy, street arts, literature...
The town is again enlivened by the open-air cinema with 1,800 places by
the lakeside beneath the stars, the Swiss Film Archives, the open-air cafés,
fairground rides, terraces... and numerous festivals with ambitious line-ups
that attract large groups from abroad to Lausanne or the surrounding area.
Classical music is not left out, thanks in particular to the Lausanne Chamber
Orchestra, which enjoys international renown and can also be hired for opening and closing ceremonies at Beaulieu Lausanne Convention and Exhibition
Centre. Outstanding professional musicians, including violinists and string
trios or quartets, can play elegant harmonies to mark a special ceremony.
Event lovers and culture vultures, come to Lausanne,
you will feel like staying here!
