Downriver Vicariate Archdiocese of Detroit Sharing Christ In and Through the Church March 2016 News The Vicar’s Corner by Fr. William Promesso This March not only brings us spring time, but also Easter. The nearness of these dates in 2016 are a good reminder of the celebration of the Paschal Mystery. Though it’s a term we often use in formal liturgical prayers, not everyone is familiar with it or what it means. The Paschal Mystery is Christ’s work of redemption accomplished principally by his passion, death, resurrection, and ascension, whereby “dying he destroyed our death, rising he restored our life.” The Paschal Mystery is celebrated and made present in the liturgy of the Church, and its saving effects are communicated through the sacraments especially the Eucharist, which renews the paschal sacrifice of Christ as the sacrifice offered by the Church. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1067) Watching winter turn to spring is reflective of the suffering of Christ that leads to glory. Watching the first flowers of spring push through the cold, hard earth remind us of Christ bursting forth from a rock-hewn tomb. Catholics have what theologians call “a sacramental imagination,” and we are able to see the grace and glory of God in the most common places and things. The Downriver Vicariate Council meets again on Tuesday, March 15. David Grobbel from the archdiocesan office of family life will speak about the recent two-part Synod on the Family held in Rome in 2014 and 2015 and other items that impact families here and everywhere. May your Lent continue to be blessed and Easter filled with new life as you dwell in the Paschal Mystery. Have a handful of jelly eggs and taste the sweetness of the Resurrection of the Lord! Indeed, how else could we be followers of the Lord if we did not personally engage in ministry to the sick, the poor, the dying and the destitute? Our faith in Christ, born of having recognized our own need for him who has come to heal our wounds, to enrich us, to give us life, to nourish us, “is the basis of our concern for the integral development of society’s most neglected members” (Evangelii Gaudium, 186). I thank you for being close to those who are ill and all the suffering, offering them the loving presence of their shepherd. — Pope Francis Mary Reparatrix Retreat House 17380 Grange Rd., Riverview, MI 48193 734-324-0901 ▪ [email protected] Scriptural Invitations of Lent Followed by a lunch of soup and bread Thursdays: March 3, 10 & 17 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Register by Monday noon of each week @ 734-3240901. The tools you collect during your time as a Dementia Care Partner will serve you well; but you must first find them, then collect them, and finally use them. Where do you begin? How do you know what you need when you don’t know what you need? This fun hands-on presentation will give you some basic tips from good reliable sources and a few suggestions on where to start to gather information that will help educate you about Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Featured are some helpful products or “tools” you might want to add to your care partner toolbox after looking them over.
