Dockers eprogramme - Leigh Miners Rangers
Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Twist Lane for our final Kingstone Press National Conference League Premier Division home fixture of the season against Hull Dockers. At stake for ourselves is the opportunity to clinch our first league leader’s trophy for seven years, provided we avoid defeat against a Dockers team with a 2-0 record against us this season. It is a great opportunity for the team and whilst the play-off structure might devalue the achievement of finishing top of the table over the course of the season, it is still a tremendous feat of consistency and quality. However we know the scale of the challenge today against a very resolute side who themselves push for the play-off places and who will be determined to pay a fitting tribute to their club stalwart Chris Stephenson. They have been something of a bogey side for us for many years and we will need to be at our best this afternoon. Regardless of the outcome, the conclusion of the league season is but stage one in the process, with the cup final next Sunday and the play-off series to come. We are in a position to achieve something special this season, building on what we have already done in league and Challenge Cup – and lest we forget that momentous run began with a defeat and subsequent reinstatement against Dockers – but in many ways the real business starts from this point onwards and we will be determined to keep pushing on as the season races to its climax. th One landmark gets ticked off next Sunday 4 October 11.30am as we travel to Widnes’ Select Security Stadium for the Conference Trophy Final against Wath Brow. There is a supporters’ coach running, kindly organised by our friends at The Britannia, and for further details visit our website. With the game being one third of the Kingstone Press Finals day, ticket prices reflect that with adults starting at £15 and concessions £7.50. Tickets are on sale from the RFL website or at the stadium itself, but also listen out for further announcements this afternoon. On the same day, our women’s team face old rivals Brighouse in the Plate Final with full fixture arrangements to be confirmed. Our Alliance team are also in action today with a league fixture against divisional leaders Orrell St James. There’s no doubt of course what is at stake today, back in January when we opened our pre-season training in the Army camp we discussed our goals for the season and to finish top of the league was one of those ambitions. Today gives us the opportunity to achieve that, and to maintain our unbeaten home record, and we need to challenge ourselves to maintain our form and focus and raise our performance levels once again. At the same time we need to stay calm and composed, not put ourselves under unnecessary pressure, and hopefully get that reward with the result which will be celebrated by everyone connected with the club. We have had two tough games in recent weeks where we have had to slug it out, not necessarily play at our best but do enough to get the result, and that is what you need to do if you want to finish at the top of the table. The West Hull game showed what this division is all about, they are scrapping for their lives and they played outstandingly well against us, Ian Kerman’s kicking game kept turning us round but we matched them with our completion rate and yardage, it was two teams going toe to toe and in the end the effort we put in gave the opportunities for some smart individual plays to give us the points. East Leeds last weekend was the biggest game of the season to date for us, they are a massive pack and they came at us strongly early on. We knew we needed to go with a different approach, try to get off the ruck and at their big men but the play-the-ball was so slow it was difficult to put that into practice. We enjoyed lots of possession but didn’t use the ball well enough to turn that possession into points, which would have made things a lot more relaxed in the final fifteen minutes than they subsequently turned out, but overall our core players were outstanding, they worked tirelessly throughout the match and played a key part in getting the win. Our mantra over the last few months has been to take every game as it comes, treating each one as a cup final, and we have another one on the list this afternoon. A glance at the league table, and their results this season, shows how good Dockers are, we know they will travel down strongly and they are a threat to anyone. They have beaten us two from two this season and will be determined to make it three in a row so we know we need to be at our very best to get the result. Whatever the outcome today, this is a big month and a half ahead. It is about taking it one step at a time and not looking ahead any further than that however we have to embrace the opportunity we have given ourselves with the league, cup and play-offs to come. The cup and Grand Final takes the headlines but the league is arguably the most important of the lot, and whichever team finishes top should deservedly be recognised as champions. The lads are hungry and the opportunity to create some special history for this club is the challenge we look forward to. Whilst we hope these aren’t our last notes of the season, we would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us this season, most recently with the people who travelled over to East Leeds to give us their backing, which is much appreciated. We’d also like to thank the players for their commitment, effort and friendship. It has been a privilege to work with them once again this season, to have such a talented group who never quit and play the game in the right way. Enjoy the game Allan and Paul Two photos from matches against Dockers from yesteryear. Above, Danny Jackson and Tom Farrimond contain Jon Eccles in the September 2013 draw at Tower Grange which confirmed both teams’ NCL Premier survival whilst below, Adam Thomason is tackled in our June 2012 Twist Lane defeat. We look at two memorable matches against our opponents Hull Dockers… A DAY TO REMEMBER Rewind the clock back eight years and Miners again faced Docker in a lateseason encounter where victory would all but guarantee a League Leaders’ th title. 7 April 2007 saw us travel to Tower Grange knowing a win would put us with a commanding advantage over our nearest rivals Skirlaugh, and in a titanic encounter we just about came out on top 19-16. Tries for Paul Wingfield, Adam Higson and Dave Patterson, alongside three John Woods goals and a Garry Fitzmartin field goal, were just about enough despite Dockers’ efforts from Jon Eccles, Glyn Jones – a Grand Final winner for West Hull against ourselves in 2002 – and Andy Walker, Chris Stephenson with two goals. Scott O’Brien and Tom Farrimond are both in contention to feature for Miners today, whilst Fitzmartin, Adam Teece and Martin Lewis are playing for the Alliance side of late. Eccles, Stephenson and Darren Bunby could all play for Dockers today. For the record, the teams were :Dockers – Paul Dam, Stuart Lambert, Andy Walker, Paul Taylor, Glyn Jones, Scott Yeaman, Steve Sellars, Matt Emerson, Gary Adam, Darren Bunby, David Fletcher, Jon Eccles, Chris Stephenson Subs – Craig Taylor, Mike Jarvis, Andy Taylor, Nicky Caldwell Miners – Darren Pilkington, Paul Wingfield, Adam Higson, John Woods, Martyn Hulme, Garry Fitzmartin, Scott O’Brien, Craig Wingfield, Aaron Gorton, Dean Balmer, Dave Patterson, Simon Warhurst, Martin Lewis Subs – Tom Farrimond, Danny Mole, Danny Galvin, Adam Teece Miners confirmed top spot with a win over Shaw Cross a week later but lost to Skirlaugh in the Grand Final, becoming the first club to top the league but not go on to claim the main prize. AND ONE TO FORGET th 9 April 1977 saw Miners face Dockers’ predecessors NDLB (National Docks Labour Board) in a BARLA National Cup fourth round tie at a miry Twist Lane and in a thrilling encounter the home side came out on the wrong side of a 10-11 result. Missing key figures Paul Dowling and John Webster, and with a number of others walking wounded, John Cooke opened the scoring with a penalty but Stephens levelled for NDLB and the Hull side’s giant pack relished the swampy conditions. Warley scored Docks’ first try but Jake Gaskell and Roberts combined to put John Cooke in for the leveller. Docks scored again and had command of the game when Cooke and Roberts collided as they tried to tackle Warley and the visiting centre took advantage to steal away for his second try and 11-5 with fifteen minutes remaining. Philip Rowe’s bomb was spilled for Charlie Warburton to score under the posts, Roberts goaling, but some resolute defence by NDLB denied a winning try for Alan Keaveney and an attempted drop goal by Rowe to tie the scores. NDLB went on to reach the final, where they lost out to local rivals Cawoods (now West Hull). THE VIEW FROM THE FRONT ROW Good afternoon and welcome to Twist Lane for our final home game of the league season against Hull Dockers. Unfortunately I miss today’s game due to being away on a family holiday in Menorca, but I will be making sure my phone is connected to Wi-Fi so I can get regular updates on Twitter from Elaine, Katie and Shelley! Today promises to be a really tough game as it always is against Dockers, they have been a bit of a bogey side for ourselves and having already beaten us twice this year at The Willows they will be coming to Leigh confident of beating us again. I know all the lads are looking forward to this game and why shouldn’t we be with ourselves being unbeaten in our last eight games, we haven’t lost at home all season and it is something we take great pride in. There can be no bigger incentive for us this weekend to keep our 100% home record knowing that a victory will win us the League Leader’s Shield, we have worked very hard as a group to get ourselves into this position and it would be nice if we could wrap it up this weekend ahead of next Sunday’s Conference Challenge Trophy Final. The last two games since my last notes have been challenging contests, the first one which was at home against West Hull could have gone either way with Wests coming full of enthusiasm and fired up for the two points as they look to avoid relegation. Thankfully we had enough in the tank and that extra edge when it mattered to get the win, and with Siddal beating Mayfield on the same day it gave us a four point cushion at the top of the table. Last week we went over to Yorkshire to take on East Leeds and although we made hard work of it near the end to only win by two points, I thought we were nowhere near our best attacking-wise but we were always in control for most of the game and overall more than deserved the two points. th Last weekend at the club saw a surprise 40 party for Allan Coleman, Allan getting hammered on all the free drinks he had managed to pester off people (nothing new there then) and then falling asleep in the club late on. The week leading up to the party Allan went away for a few days with his wife Joanne, being too tight to buy his own clothes he decided to pinch all their Callum’s clothes, Callum having to stay in his school uniform all week whilst his dad was away. One of Allan’s birthday presents was a new mobile phone with a camera, I think it must be his first one judging by Facebook. Posting a shedload of photos in his bid to be a selfie king! Whilst on the topic of Facebook I will give Dave Muir a mention for sharing things about terrorist group ISIS and young Connor Ratcliffe who has been doing a Tommy Parkinson by pining for his old club St Judes! And finally on behalf of all the players I would like to thank you all for all the support you have given us this season and we hope to see you cheering us on today and at next week’s Trophy final, as well as the upcoming play-offs. SPONSORSHIP NEWS With Lee Walls A warm welcome is extended to both our own supporters and to the players, officials and fans of Hull Dockers ARLFC. The game at Twist Lane today is our last home league game of the season and a win today would see the Miners finish top of the league (and in my eyes be the TRUE Champions) but I suppose we should just be thankful that the Super 8s / Middle 8s nonsense has not descended upon us as yet ! Today we are using the game as an opportunity to recognise our coaches’ fantastic efforts this season by inviting Joanne Coleman and Shelley Whitworth the wives of our joint head coaches to the sponsors suite to enjoy the final game in a little more comfort. Hopefully they will be joined by some of the player’s partners and hope to see the Miners finish the regular season (at home) in style. I am also delighted to announce that our forthcoming Conference Cup Final against Wath Brow Hornets at the Select Security Stadium has been specifically sponsored by Taylor Drilling. I have also done a specific piece elsewhere in the programme on a new sponsorship partnership with Taylor Drilling for 2016. In relation to our ‘Taylor Drilling’ Cup Final, there is coach transport from the club returning to the club after our game, a list is up in the club and places are being taken so if you want to go via the coach please get your name down to secure a seat a contribution toward the coach cost is required at £5.00 per person. The coach will be leaving at 10.15am sharp so please be at the club in good time. Match tickets are also available at the club, the price has been fixed by the RFL as there are three finals that day and despite our plea to consider our game singularly the price is fixed at £15.00 and £7.50 concessions (inc children over 2yr old (unbelievable that one!!!). Enjoy the game…. Come on the MINERS…. Yours in sport. Lee Walls HULL DOCKERS LEIGH MINERS RANGERS 2015 Date Opponents st It’s been another year of defying the doom-mongers for Hull Dockers as the Tower Grange side, perennially tipped by the critics as relegation candidates, cock a snook at the naysayers and prepare for a play-off campaign. It has been another fine season for Dockers, who boast an impressive record against their top six rivals thus far, and a win today would not only complete a third victory of the season over Miners, and put a dent in our league leader’s aspirations, but also give them every chance of a top four finish. Under wily old foxes Chris Kay and Terry Smirk, Dockers have recruited well this year with the likes of David Painter, Craig Cook, Lee Brown and Ross Kemp all joining from stricken local rivals East Hull and Skirlaugh, whilst old stagers Chris Stephenson and Jon Eccles will be bidding for one last hurrah after years of distinguished service at HU8. Dockers have taken points off Siddal and ourselves, and completed a notable double over Wath Brow, in what has been an impressive campaign. They have dropped points on the road in recent weeks though with losses at Thatto Heath, Mayfield and Egremont prior to their trip west this afternoon, but few teams have proven as tough for Miners to crack over the last decade as the unheralded men from Tower Grange, and this afternoon will be the sternest of tests for our league aspirations. 31 Jan Hull Dockers th 14 Feb WALNEY CENTRAL th 7 Mar WEST HULL th 14 Mar WIGAN ST PATS st 21 Mar OXFORD th 28 Mar MAYFIELD th 11 Apr Oulton Raiders th 19 Apr YORK CITY th 25 Apr WATH BROW nd 2 May UNDERBANK th 9 May Egremont Rangers th 16 May Lock Lane rd 23 May SIDDAL th 6 Jun Millom th 13 Jun Hull Dockers th 20 Jun EAST LEEDS th 27 Jun Rochdale Mayfield th 4 July WIGAN ST PATS th 11 July OULTON th 18 July LOCK LANE th 25 July Wath Brow Hornets st 1 Aug Siddal th 8 Aug THORNHILL TROJANS th 15 Aug EGREMONT nd 22 Aug West Hull th 27 Aug THATTO HEATH th 5 Sep Wigan St Patricks th 12 Sep WEST HULL th 19 Sep East Leeds th 26 Sep HULL DOCKERS th 4 Oct WATH BROW th 10 Oct Thatto Heath Comp F–A CCR1 CCR2 CCR3 NCL CCR4# NCL NCL CCR5# NCL NCC1 NCL NCL NCL NCC2 NCL NCL NCL NCCQF NCL NCL NCL NCL NCCSF 6-10* 26-18 32-28 24-22 32-6 26-14 24-10 14-44 32-8 40-6 30-40 24-27 28-18 40-16 18-25 30-12 38-44 48-16 40-22 30-12 4-64 25-14 24-18 NCL NCL NCL NCL NCL NCL NCL CCF^ 34-24 40-10 35-22 32-22 30-20 20-18 Sponsors Miners Past Players Taylor Drilling Svs E Jones / M O’Brien Cadence Miners Past Players Leigh Past Players T S Décor Ltd The Balmer Family Past Miners T S Décor Ltd / Miners Past Players The Britannia WA Glazing Miners Ladies *Result overturned after Dockers played ineligible player Home games in capitals # - Game played at Leigh Sports Village Stadium ^ - Game played at Select Security Stadium, Widnes PLAYER PROFILES – CONNOR PARTINGTON Name - Connor Partington Age - 21 Sponsor - Sandy's Superstars Occupation - Student Twitter - @cpartington93 Favourite position - Centre Favourite food - Fajitas Favourite drink - Aloe Vera Favourite song - Deadmau5 - Strobe Best trainer at club - Darryl Kay Worst trainer at club - Charles Tyson Best dressed at club - Lee Walls Worst dressed at club - Mark Nicholson Ambitions for 2015 - To be playing week in week out and to win something with Miners NATIONAL CONFERENCE PREMIER DIVISION With just two rounds of fixtures remaining for most of the NCL Premier clubs, the major issues are still to be resolved following another weekend of intriguing results. Perhaps the club who will be sweating the most over the next two weeks will be Egremont Rangers, who followed up a loss at relegation rivals Thatto Heath Crusaders with an even more disastrous setback at already-relegated Oulton Raiders, losing 44-24 to the bottom side. Tommy Griffiths (below, left) was star for Oulton with a hat-trick but Egremont now have to beat Siddal this afternoon to give themselves breathing space as both Thatto and West Hull sit just two points further back. Thatto couldn’t capitalise as they were beaten heavily at Siddal 56-18, despite leading 12-10 at the interval, Freddie Walker with a treble for the Chevinedgers who remain second. West Hull though gave themselves fresh hope as they edged out Wigan St Patricks 23-22 thanks to Danny Nicklas’ (below, centre) late drop goal. Despite that result Pats remain fourth after Hull Dockers went down to a heavy loss at Rochdale Mayfield, Matt Calland with four tries for his team as they continue to rack up the points on home soil, 48-18 the result. The top six appear well set as neither of the two sides with a realistic hope of challenging for a play-off place could capitalise, East Leeds losing out to ourselves of course and Lock Lane seeing their hopes effectively ended by Wath Brow Hornets, who ended a two match losing streak by bouncing back 28-18 in Castleford, Franny King (below, right) with a try and four goals for the Cumbrians who had the ageless former Whitehaven stalwart Marc Jackson back from suspension and influential in the front row. ALLIANCE TEAM This afternoon we also play host to our Alliance team’s crunch North West Men’s League Division Two fixture against Orrell St James. Our visitors have clinched the league title but the promotion race is set to go to the wire and after recent wins over Woolston and a walkover against Widnes Tigers, Miners sit second, two points clear of Golborne Parkside – whom we host next Saturday. That win over Woolston was secured with tries for Jamie Hall (2), Jake Ford (2), Scott Travis, Neil Shackloth, Adam Thomason, Declan Flannery and Ryan Monaghan, Adam Ashurst with six goals. Jake Ford also claimed the match award. When the two sides met a month or so ago, Orrell were victorious 48-18, and the Saints have lost just one game this season.
