Lamar begins season with some new
faces in important places

While that may not be a complete sentence, it holds just as
much, if not more power when it
comes to describing the Lamar
Silver Foxes football team.
All of those players listed
were key contributors over the
last two or more seasons, which
have seen the Silver Foxes make
it to back to back upper-state
championship games and all of
them have graduated
“We had a lot of key guys in
key spots graduate,” Lamar head
coach Corey Fountain said,
describing his current roster.
“Hopefully we got some younger
guys who can step up. They’re
unproven right now, but hopefully they can step up and be contributors this year for us on
offense and defense.”
A big person that Fountain
has to replace is Brown, who has
been the starting quarterback for
the past four years and the key
catalyst in running his high-powered spread offense. If last year
was any sort of foreshadowing of
what life is like without Brown
when he went down due to
injury, it could be a long season
on the offensive side of the ball.
“Last year was kind of a
scramble,” Fountain said on last
year’s quarterback situation.
“We had like a third string quarterback take over for a while, we
had a freshman; he played for a
little bit and like I said we ended
up putting LaBradford Abson
there for a big chunk of the season - the middle of the season.”
But now there is no Brown,
there is no chance that he will
come off the bench after he is
healed. There is also no Abson,
Lamar’s leading rusher last season, to make plays with his feet
and keep the ship afloat.
Instead, there is new crop of
kids coming in and one getting
his chance to replace Brown and
be the vocal point of that offense
is Kobie Durant.
“This year we are going to
move Kobie Durant from wide
receiver
to
quarterback,”
Fountain said, naming his new
quarterback. “He’s been doing
well for us this summer in passing leagues; he’s been working
out real hard. Hopefully that will
translate to success on the football field.”
And while this may be
Durant’s first year as the starting
quarterback coming out of camp,
do not expect Fountain to slow
down or water down Lamar’s
offense any.
“We haven’t simplified that
much,” said Fountain, describing
the state of the Silver Foxes
offense. “We are still running the
spread. We might mix in some
option this year. Some of our
younger quarterbacks do a better
job of running the football than
throwing the ball so we are going
to try to run the ball a little more
this year.”
With so many key players
from last year graduating though
it seems like expectations would
be modest this season. In Lamar,
a town that loves its football
dearly, that is not an option
“Well, you know Lamar is a
big football town,” Fountain said
on Lamar’s football tradition.
“They don’t expect anything less
than success, and these kids
know that and they’ve been
working towards that over the
summer. Hopefully we’ll have
some guys step up this year.”
Despite the offense making
just a few mild adjustments, the
defense is making a somewhat
significant change and it has to
do with the personnel that
Lamar has on its roster.

“We are going to a more 3-4-5
multiple look defense to get
more of our athletes out on the
field,” Fountain said on the
change.
When it comes to youth, however, Lamar tops the charts in
Darlington County as the Silver
Foxes only have six seniors on a
roster that Fountain described as
junior heavy.
However, that does not mean
that Lamar does not have an
ample amount of returning players though.
“We only have six seniors, but
we have guys that did play last
year,” Fountain, speaking on
Lamar’s overall experience, said.
“We have seven returners on
offense and six on defense.”
And while the seniors may be
outnumbered it has not changed
the impact they are having on
the team as a whole.
“So far the guys that are seniors, they’ve stepped up and
they’ve really tried to lead our
younger guys,” Fountain said on
his senior leadership. “They do it
more by example, there’s not a
lot of talk; it’s more they’re in the
weight room every day. When
they’re in the weight room
they’re working hard, when
we’re at passing league they’re
working hard, they’re picking
guys up; they’re making sure
guys know what they’re supposed to be doing.
That leadership might not be
enough, however. At the end of
the day Lamar is going to have to
overcome its lack of depth, its
overall youth and the fact of
dealing with so many new faces
if it wants to make to a third
straight upper-state championship.

A new beginning for the Falcons
in 2015

The word “new” is becoming synonymous with Darlington High
School and its football team.
After four years under head
coach Will Lampkin, four years of
Trayvon Thomas running the ball
down opponents throats, four years
of the same uniforms and four years
of the same offense, that is all about
to change.
Darlington now has a new coach
in John Jones, Thomas has graduated, Nike is now making the uni6
forms, and what was once a prostyle offense with shotgun variations is now a completely spreadyou-out style offense that mimics
the likes of Auburn and Oregon at
the collegiate ranks.
Change is not always a bad thing
and sometimes it’s better to “be out
with the old and in with the new”.
But for change to be successful
the person implementing it must be
able to get people to follow or it is
bound for doom. That is where
Jones comes in.
As the new head coach, he is the
ultimate leader and through his
leadership Darlington will either
see success or fail. After coaching at
Sumter the past season the fellow
Darlington native has come home
with a goal of changing the culture
of the Falcons football program.
While the challenge is not easy,
Jones has embraced the challenge
with open arms and an open mind;
more importantly, the players have
done the same.
“We feel like we have had a great
summer with our guys, the work
ethic has been very impressive,”
Jones said on the progress of the
FOOTBALL 2014
team. “We’ve been very happy and
pleased, it’s more than we expected or
hoped for, but the level we want to compete at we just aren’t there yet right now.”
Jones, who took over shortly after last
season ended, has seen a vast improvements from when the team.
“I think we are a lot further along than
what we were in the spring,” said Jones,
referring to his team’s growth. “I think it
has been a really beneficial summer for
us.”
And while the team is still learning and
the change is still fresh, there are some
things that are not going to change; and
that begins with the expectations of the
program.
Five years ago, when Lampkin took
over, he said his goal was to build
Darlington into a playoff team year in and
year out and Jones feels the exact same
ketball and he is successful. Coach Howle
and those guys, they’ve had a successful
program and he has been the point man
for a lot of those successful teams they’ve
had.”
The quarterback is the driving force of
Jones’ zone-read spread scheme on
offense, and Johnson and the other quarterbacks on the roster are really starting to
pick up all of nuances of the offense.
“We’ve had a little bit of hiccups here
and there, but none of that is not what we
expected,” Jones said on the state of the
offense. “You know, first year in another
offense, something totally different from
what they were used to running, but we
feel like we are making strides and all of
our quarterbacks are starting to get more
comfortable and the more comfortable
they become the better we will be.”
Jones, however, doesn’t believe his
offense has to score a bunch of points to
be effective. He believes his offense can
help benefit his defense in more ways
than just lighting up the scoreboard.
“We feel like we have an opportunity to
be a good defense, but to be that good
defense we are going to have to produce
offensively and doing that is not necessarily putting a lot of points on the board, but
every drive has to be a good drive,” Jones
said on what can help drive the defense to
be successful this season.
But before Jones gets complicated with
all of the “x’s and o’s” of football he,
believes his team has to overcome a pro-
what when it comes to the team this season.
“We’ve definitely set a goal to play in
November, which puts us in the playoffs,”
Jones said, discussing the Falcon’s goals
for the season. “One of the things we talk
about - which we will have to play exceptionally well to get it - but one of the
things we talk to our guys about, we want
to be the first team to play a home playoff
game in that stadium.”
That may be a tough goal to accomplish in his first season, especially in a
region that has both Hartsville and
Marlboro County in it, but Jones isn’t
making any excuses and believes his team
can make some noise this season.
“We like our football team and we feel
like we should be a challenging football
team for some people,” Jones said, declaring his faith in his team this season.
And what makes him have so much
faith, you might ask? It probably starts
with his quarterback, Frankie Johnson.
Johnson, who played last year as a
wide receiver and “wild cat” quarterback,
is now the man in charge and while everyone knows his success on the basketball
court for the Falcons, it’s that success that
Jones hopes rubs off on the rest of his
teammates.
“Frankie is a guy that leads by example,” Jones said about Johnson. “He works
hard every day and he comes every day
and does what he is supposed to do and
wants to learn. You watch him play bas-

lem depth. While he feels he has talented
players at each position, some of the backups are unknown.
An injury can derail any great season,
no matter how good the team is and by
building good depth a team can lessen the
blow when something like that happens.
“I believe our biggest issue right now is
depth problems,” Jones said on his team’s
one glaring weakness. “We have to find
some depth at some key positions.
The first game of the season, which is
at home against Carolina Forest is less
than two weeks away. Can Darlington find
that depth by then, can it eliminate those
small hiccups on offense, and can the
Falcons host the first playoff game in its
current stadium?

Hartsville looks to take care of unfinished business

Last season was great, but it
did not quite have the finish the
Hartsville Red Foxes were looking for.
Going for its second state title
in three years, the Red Foxes
came up one game short, losing
to the South Pointe Stallions at
Williams-Brice Stadium in the
3A state championship game.
Now a new season is upon us
and while there are plenty of
familiar faces still on the roster
one thing head coach Jeff
Calabrese believes is just because
you had a good football team last
season does not mean you are
going to be a good football team
this season.
Throughout his career at
Hartsville as its head coach,
Calabrese has stood by his
mantra of “get better every day”
believing that no team is where
they need to be when the season
starts; and this season is no different.
“Right now we are not a very
good football team, I can tell you
that,” Calabrese said on the state
of his team. “We have the capability to have a good season, it
just depends on what their (players) attitude is and how hard
they work and how much they
improve from day to day.”
One of the main reasons
Calabrese says the team is struggling at the moment is due to
some of the players that have
been lost due to graduation last
season. Hartsville returns an
abundant amount of talent at the
skill positions on offense, but it
does have to replace some of the
players in trenches and wide
receiver Dequan Benjamin, the
Red Foxes lone shrine bowler.
“It’s a whole new cast of char-
acters,” Calabrese said on why
this team cannot be measured off
of what last year’s team did.
“Offensively we have quite a few
new offensive lineman, we have
to break in a new wide receiver,
replacing a shrine bowler.
Offensively the offensive line
drives the bus so even though
you have some running backs
you have to be able to block some
folks.”
Three of those major running
backs returning are Brian Rivers,
Shy McPhail and J.C. Clair and in
that dynamic Wing-T offense the
more backs the merrier.
McPhail and Rivers have
become household names in the
Hartsville community, playing
and contributing since they were
sophomores. Clair, on the other
hand, was relatively unknown
until an injury to Rivers gave him
the shot he needed last season.
Now Clair is going to be

counted on to replace star back
Aryon Dudly who is gone after
having a stellar career with the
Red Foxes Calabrese believes the
experience that Clair gained
from last season will have him
even more prepared for this season.
“I think it’s fantastic,”
Calabrese said on the experience
Clair gained when Rivers went
down. “ I think J.C. rushed for
about 750 yards, averaged about
8.4 yards a carry and had several
touchdowns and really only
started in the five region games.
I think that experience is tremendous and he has had a really
good offseason.”
But while the talent at the
tailback position appears to be
deep and something that opposing coaches will grow to be envious and fearful of, Calabrese still
echoes a simple sentence that
will truly dictate how the Red

“The offensive line is key,” said
Calabrese.
Hartsville’s offense is not just handcuffed to run, however. Once its running
starts to take control of the game quarterback Matt Lynch, who is entering his third
year as a starter has been able to have
some success throwing the ball down
field.
During those previous years, however,
he has had the luxury of throwing to a
Shrine Bowl wide receiver. Now that
receiver is gone - and replacing him is junior Steve Joyner, who Calabrese is excited
about.
“I believe he is a young receiver that is
going to make a difference.” said
Calabrese.
Offense does not win championships;
it is the defense that separates the winners from the pretenders and Hartsville,
who has one of the best defensive players
in the state in Datavious Wilson, hope to
be in the winner’s category.
Unfortunately, for the moment,
Hartsville is going to have to play without
Wilson, who is injured, and may miss the
first few games.
“He led our team in tackles for two
years,” Calabrese, listing Wilson’s accomplishments, said. “He set the single season
record for tackles last year and when it is
all said and done what matters is, will he
be there and be ready to go. He’s a great
kid and a great player.”
As the opening game of the season
against Central gets closer and closer, the
anticipation builds even more and more
and with the success the Red Foxes have
had over the last four years the expectation are through the roof.
Can Hartsville live up to the hype or
will the losses the Red Foxes have suffered
through graduation be too much to overcome? By the time the months of
November and December get here the
answers should be growing clearer.
