Challenge Fest - Herstory quilts
Are you ready ladies? Break out your fall wardrobe and get ready for a
FABULOUS event full of food, fun and friendship. Barbara Seidel has
been working around the clock organizing “The Herstory” Challenge
Fest. We will get to know more about some of the ladies in our guild
who made a quilt for the Challenge telling their quilt story. LeAnn Goettel has an amazing menu planned for us; “corn” you hardly wait? Just
for coming you will receive an opportunity ticket at the door for a
chance to win wonderful door prizes. If you have a quilt entered in the
Challenge, you’ll receive a second ticket. Twenty or so of our members
volunteered to make centerpieces for the tables. Everyone gets a ballot at the door to vote for the Viewer’s Choice Award; the Guild’s judges
have already selected their favorite quilts. This is a guild meeting you
won’t want to miss. The doors open at 9:15 a.m..
Remember to CARPOOL; we want to have room for everyone. If you
arrive late and can’t find a place to park at the Church (A), you can park
at Iva Lees Restaurant or DeNaults Hardware closest to Ave De La
Estrella and West Ave Marquita. (B)
If you have any questions email Vickie [email protected]

WORKSHOPS
Monica Shafer [email protected]
Julie Vlahos [email protected]
November will be the Her-story Challenge Fest, so there will be no workshop.
December there will be no workshop as well, due to the holidays.
We’ll start the New Year with a workshop with Ami Simms. Check out her work at www.amisimms.net
SHOW & TELL
Wendy McCalley [email protected] Linda Rigdon [email protected]
Show and Tell in October presented 10 quilted items by nine
quilters. They were all lovely to look at, but we especially
enjoyed seeing some candy corn in October.
There will be no Show and Tell in November as we will be
seeing and hearing the Herstory of many Surfside Quilters.
The December meeting is early enough in the month that we
might be able to see some Christmas gifts as well as holiday
quilts. Will be looking forward to that.

STASHBUSTERS - PHILANTHROPY
Sheri Hill, [email protected], 949-492-3788
Barbara Ann Christensen, [email protected] , Roni Trehy, [email protected] , Charlotte Spere, [email protected]
The next meeting: November 20, 2013 San Clemente Presbyterian Church 10 am - 2 pm
During the November meeting the Stashbusters table will be in the Fireside Room to collect any quilts you
may want to turn in. They will have a few quilts for quilting. We will return to our regular spot in December.
The Hoffman batiks are very popular; all bundles have been taken. Four of the quilts are completed and we
were able to cut batting during our meeting for the tops turned in with backing. Thank you for including backing! We are purchasing fabric for other batiks tops as they arrive. If you haven’t had time to work on yours
yet – there is still time. I hope to get them out in February or March.
We took 15 quilts to the Dana Point Senior Meals on Wheels last month. They were very well received and
will be given to homebound seniors during the holidays.
We are in need of quilters, both long arm and free motion! We are trying do all the piecing of the backing
and will include the backing and batting, 4 inches on all side, with each kit.
Join us November 20th for our next Stashbuster meeting. There is plenty to do: sew on your own philanthropy project or ours; prepare backs, batting and binding; cut kits; go through our stash for fabric to use in a
philanthropy project. Bring your lunch. We will provide water and a yummy dessert.
SMALL ITEMS: Our host church is grateful for the small toiletries and non-perishable food items we deliver
each month. They deliver the items to missions in Baja as well as to FAM.

NO MAGAZINE SALES IN NOVEMBER
Do you have a stack of used quilting/sewing magazines, patterns or
pamphlets that you no longer want to keep? We sell them four for a dollar and the
money goes toward the guild expenses.
Jeanne Tavasci
Patterns don’t grow old. When they are done in new fabrics and popular current
colors they have a whole new look, something the Modern Quilt movement has
discovered and continues to explore.

HOSPITALITY

Fall is in the air and the quilts come out of the closets to cover our beds. I love to
sleep with the covers up to my chin and remember my early years in Utah with
cold wind blowing outside my window.
This month’s block is “Flying Pinwheels” and now is the time to get your triangles
blocks out of the way so you can concentrate on family, friends, and turkey dinner.

don’t worry – we have new incentives for you!
We are an open group and you are welcome to be part of us.
There are no restrictions – all quilters, new and not-so-new [or
even old. Editor] are invited. Our easy, relaxed meetings are a
great place to get to know other members of SQG. We cheer
each other on, we have a lot of laughs, and we get things done!
Wondering about sizes for

These are not EXACT sizes, just

WOUNDED WARRIOR PROJECT Mary Freedman, Chair

Dawn White [email protected] , Robin Free [email protected], Nancy Burch [email protected],
Virginia Keenan [email protected] ,
We decided not to have a block for November and December; we are all too busy
this time of year to have more on our plates. The hope is that we will have a backlog of squares for the committee to work on and complete for those months. I
know that we’ll have tops, but we’ll have to see how the quilting part goes; you all
know how busy long arm quilters are that time of year. I still could use one or two
quilters to give Nancy a hand with the quilting, longarm or domestic machine.
The committee will meet on Nov 5th and again on Dec 3rd to sew blocks together
and do other work on the project. So bring any blocks you have finished to the
November and December meetings. Or, make some more and bring them.

They both found the quilt fun to
make with machine piecing and

Vickie Janis won the Monthly Mini for October. These two
fabric pictures were made by Marcia Faultersack .
Charlotte Spere made “Busy, Busy” using a
method of appliqué learned in her friendship
group. She wanted to try the double freezer
paper, starch and glue technique and chose
this pattern with 30’s fabric and 94 units of
appliqué around the border. She had not
appliquéd and wanted the experience. The
units in this quilt are not too small so it was
not difficult, just time consuming. She says
it was a good learning experience for her.
12
At Quilt Festival in Long Beach Ginny Keenan purchased a book of purse patterns and chose the pattern for this
one as her first project. She also purchased the kit for this quilt . The olives on the fabric were what sold her.
Unfortunately, the kit was missing some fabric. She says she has now learned not to throw away the receipt before she finishes the project. [This is a sideways view of the quilt—because the spacing is better. Editor]
“Three for Sara”. Vickie Janis’ two year old
granddaughter moved out of her crib and into
a big girl bed—queen size. The pattern came
from Road to California 2 years ago. The hibiscus fabric on borders and back came on a
full bolt of fabric at a garage sale for $10!
Vickie did the machine quilting, inspired by
Linda Ambrosini's class for Philanthropy.
Joan Orris showed this wall hanging titled “Hold the Gravy” from a
pattern in Sep/Oct 2013 issue of McCall’s Quilting Magazine. It is a
birthday gift for her sister, fellow guild member Lenora Wills, who likes
whimsical things. Lenora provided the wool for the turkey but had not
seen the quilt until the meeting. The wool turkey appliqué is hand
blanket stitched with perle cotton and the piece is machine quilted.
13
“Loose Leaf Earl Grey” Jan Hirth made this quilt
from a pattern called Green Tea and Sweet
Beans. It is a sampler type quilt incorporating
different techniques including hand appliqué, lots
of pieced y-seams, English paper piecing, and
machine piecing of traditional blocks as well as
newly designed ones. Her colorful fabrics are
mostly Kaffee Fassett prints. She hand and
machine pieced the quilt.
Michelle Lincoln showed “Worthy”.
Her inspiration came from the
book “Crazy Curves” by Elisa Wilson. She made the top with her
younger brother in mind. But after
a visit with him in VA, she decided
the colors didn’t go with anything
in his house and it became a UFO.
Last summer a quilting friend
asked about it, so Michelle gave it
to her and posted a picture on
Facebook. Her brother and SIL
raved about the picture and she
had a few moments of regret for
giving it away since they liked it so
much. Nine months later her
friend from Mesa Grande called to
see if they could meet up. They
met at Fat Quarters Quilt shop and
she presented Michelle with the
quilt which she finished and had
quilted by Ida in Julian. She said
her quilt group told her she
needed to return it to Michelle,
who will be giving it to her brother
in Feb 2014 for his 60th birthday.
14
Phyllis Parente made this Bat Mitzvah gift for her cousin’s granddaughter who will be bat
mitzvahed next week in Las Vegas, where they live. Phyllis wanted to make something
cheerful and young for the young girl. She is looking forward to seeing family members
who she rarely has the opportunity to see, and to playing a bit of Craps!
Board members, Committee Chairs and
Special Committee Chairs wear red-violet
leis to the meetings so you can easily
identify them.
Have a question? Ask a lady in a lei!
The Wounded Warriors Project table
was attended by committee member
Carmelle Spruill.
