Pearl Sydenham profi..
Pearl Sydenham by J. & G. Meakin So far no registery marks found. Pearl Sydenham shape was primarily made by J&G Meakin. Some compotes have been found with a J. Maddock mark. The name Pearl came from the oval mark with PEARL CHINA below J&G Meakin. (see drawing). No patent registry date has been found on any J&G Meakin piece of white ironstone, but we suspect it was potted shortly after 1853-4 (when The T&RBoote Sydenham shape was patented). It is an obvious copy with enough variations. They made round or oval bodies with no flat panels. But it still resembles Sydenham. The pointed shield or ogee motif is shouldered tightly with no dart or fleur de lys between. (see dish drawing). As with many Meakin shapes Pearl Sydenham is beautifully potted always gleaming white with seldom any crazing. It is no easily found. We know of no collector that has gathered a set of the tea, chamber and dinner pieces. Besides Meakin, this plate is also found marked Pearson’s No. 5 Shape, E. Pearson, Cobridge, c. 1856 Persia Shape, E. Corn, Burslem, and T. Goodfellow.
