Client Brief
We have been tasked to source appropriate venues for the European Reunion 2013 in late April early May.
The format will be similar to the Paris reunion with venues that are of interest rather than run of the mill venues.
We have looked for the following venues:
Friday
An evening drinks reception for 500, followed by smaller dinner venues for around 100 guests depending on individual college needs
Saturday
An intriguing venue with a guest speaker and a tour of venue
Lunch venue for up to 500 people
Academic programme venue for up to 500 people
Gala dinner venue for 500 people with guest speaker.
An issue which needs to be addressed is adopting the Spanish way of life, where people tend to eat around 10pm, consequently most of the
museums are open to the public until 8.00pm, and consequently venues such as The Prado are only open to private events from 8.30pm

Madrid 2013
Madrid has had a host of identities since men first settled the fortifiable site by the shallow River Manzanares. From Roman way station and Arab
garrison town to the hub of perhaps the most powerful global empire the world has known, and from there to a war-torn wasteland – few other
European capitals can claim a past anything like as chequered. Its history is a complex mosaic of peoples and cultures, and its present reflects that
complexity.
Post-Franco explosion
In the 21st century, the city is re-inventing itself yet again, and exploring Madrid today brings the visitor face to face with all the achievements and
dilemmas of 'la transición': the post-Franco explosion of ideas and expression of newfound freedom. Nowadays the heart of Spain is throbbing to the
rhythm of a fresh pacemaker. There are new inhabitants, new infrastructure and new habits, bound together by an enduring sense of historical
continuity. The old and the new are bubbling together, mostly harmoniously, and madrileños are as interested to see the results as any visitor.
Reminders of the past
Reminders of the past are everywhere and it's hard to know where to begin: you can't ignore the Prado, Thyssen or Reina Sofía, housing some of the
finest collections of art anywhere in Europe, and Sunday isn't Sunday in Madrid without a visit to the Rastro flea market and leisurely breakfast
vermouth in a nearby bar. 'Madrid de Los Austrias', the grand Habsburg-created area east of the Plaza Mayor, breathes the 17th and 18th centuries
from every cobble, while the Retiro beckons with its acres of green space and neatly manicured walkways.
Design & innovation
But the new clamours for attention as well: the Jean Nouvel-designed extension to the Reina Sofia museum, opened in 2005, is as courageously
incongruous as it is successful, and the renovation and pedestrianisation of the network of narrow streets round the Puerta del Sol have made
walking through the area infinitely more pleasant. Even Richard Rogers' award-winning new terminal at Barajas airport is worth a shuttle ride when
you arrive. New investment, fresh faces and what seems to be a never-ending economic boom have energised Madrid and its inhabitants. The city
continues to relish its substance and renew its form. If you've never been, it's a must. If you knew it before, you'll be astonished at the changes.

An historic building and unique venue, the Royal House of Tapestry. This fine factory was made for King Philip V in 1721. The factory was moved to its current location in the XIX
century, near the Retiro Park, in the centre of the city. The building maintains excellent areas of its original structure and still today operates today as a Tapestry factory with 55
craftsmen/women who design and weave tapestries and carpets. It has two large and spacious rooms of 440 m² (4,736 sq. feet) and 160 m² (1,722 square feet), with high ceilings.
Lavatories, kitchen and adjacent catering room are available. The rooms have both air-conditioning and heating. The rooms may also be decorated using in-house made carpets
and tapestries.
History
The Real Fábrica de Tapices was founded in 1721 by Felipe V, on the model of the royal factories set up in France at the beginning of the 17th century. His intention was to create a
strong national industry so that Spain would not have to depend on imports of French or Flemish products. The Spanish monarchy thus became the promoter of one of the
longest-surviving tapestry factories in history.
The King appointed Jacobo Vandergoten as Director, the renowned master tapestry maker of Antwerp, who moved with his family to Madrid. Vandergoten set up his looms and,
to start with, began to weave tapestries based on preliminary drafts brought from Flanders, but very soon the Crown secured an agreement for the supply of “model pieces”
created by the King’s painters so that they could be reproduced in the looms.
Throughout the 18th century, the Factory enjoyed a period of great splendour with the arrival of the first Bourbons. Under the artistic direction of Antonio Rafael Mengs, various
artists, amongst whom Francisco de Goya stands out, headed a process of renewal in which the tapestry acquired an original aesthetic and parted ways with the Flemish tradition.
Between 1775 and 1793, Goya painted sixty-three model drafts for tapestries for the Royal Seats of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and El Pardo during the reign of Carlos III and Carlos
IV, with themes such as hunting and local customs.
Over the course of the 19th century and the first few decades of the 20th century, the Madrid factory grew in terms of prestige and achieved more extensive international
renown. The degree of perfection and artistic quality of the rugs and tapestries was recognised in the form of an Honourable Mention by the Imperial Commission of the Universal
Exhibition in Paris in 1867, and a gold medal in the Universal Exhibition of 1900. At the same time, there was a proliferation of orders from all around the world: palaces, theatres,
luxury hotels and private residences all decorated their open spaces with exquisite rugs, tapestries and appliqué made by the Factory.
In 1996, the regal and historical factory became a foundation, and the Real Fábrica de Tapices Foundation came into being, a non-profit body dedicated to ensuring the passing on
of the trades and the spread of knowledge of the historical legacy of the Real Fábrica to future generations.

The CBA was founded in 1880 thanks to the determined efforts of a small group of artists. During the first years of the 20th century, the board of directors consisted of some of
the most prominent cultural personalities of the era (such as Jacinto Benavente and Carlos Arniches), while the young Pablo Picasso attended its painting classes as a student and
Ramón María del Valle-Inclán frequented its parlours.
In 1981, the twelve-storey, multi-purpose building was declared “an historic and artistic national monument”. Following this, in 1983, a thorough refunding of the CBA was
undertaken thanks to the Association of Sculptural Artists, which brought together some of the most prominent creative minds in Spain. The CBA, having since opened to the
public of Madrid and providing an important international cultural venue, has begun a process of expansion and re-organization.

History
The earliest evidence of the Hospital de la Pasión (Hospital of the Passion) appears in historical documents of Madrid and in plans of the city of Madrid in the XVII century,
specifically in 1638. The Hospital of the Passion was dedicated exclusively to the care of women.
In 1780, Carlos III ordered the foundation of a College of Surgery in Madrid. This new college was to be modelled after the existing ones in Cadiz and Barcelona used by the
Military. After returning from a trip through Europe where they had been sent by Carlos III to study and practice with the most prestigious surgeons of the day, the doctors
Antonio Gimbernant and Mariano Rivas where called to Madrid to direct the Royal College of Surgery.
In 1781 the project to renovate the hospital for the College of Surgery´s use was commissioned to Francisco Sabatini who at the time was working in the General Hospital as an
architect, today it is the Queen Sofía Centre for the Arts National Museum. Sabatini created the plans to locate the New College of Surgery in the plot that was occupied by the
neighbouring Hospital of the Passion; but this project was never realized and the Royal College of Surgery occupied the cellar of the General Hospital to the
disappointment of the doctors Gimbernat and Rivas.
It was not until 1830 that Fernando VII, took up the earlier idea of his predecessor. In 1831 Isidro González Velázquez made drafts of the projects. These were modified by Tiburcio
Pérez Cuervo in 1836 into their final version. Don Pedro Castellón Ginesa, Royal Surgeon of the court of Fernando VII, decided to unify both colleges, Surgery and Medicine.
And so began, the Royal College of Medicine and Surgery of San Carlos, In 1843 was renamed the Faculty of Medical Science (medicine, surgery, and pharmacy). In 1845 it was
named the Faculty of Medicine. When the Faculty of Medicine moved to its current building in the University, the former quarters were neglected for many years. This period
abandonment endangered the integrity and the very existence of this building. It was saved by the Minister of Education and Science who in 1970 created the Official School of
Doctors of Madrid.

Inspired by King Alfonso XIII’s desire to build a luxury hotel to rival the Ritz in Paris, the Hotel Ritz in Madrid shares with the Ritz hotels in Paris and London a reputation as one of
the truly original grand luxury hotels in Europe.
The Hotel Ritz opened its doors in 1910 in the presence of His Majesty King Alfonso XIII. The hotel was designed and built under the personal supervision of the legendary hotelier
Cesar Ritz, from whom the name was adopted.
The Ritz has played a crucial role in the life of Madrid for over a century. Still today, the hotel remains a key attraction for many to this European capital.
At the beginning of the last century, King Alfonso XIII returned from his trips around Europe full of impressions of the Palaces that he had visited. A succession of parks, avenues
and grand designs had excited the imagination of the young monarch, leaving him overwhelmed with new ideas and plans for the Spanish capital, Madrid.
Madrid was a city of intense vitality, with magnificent buildings and beautiful gardens; nevertheless, something was missing. The King was the first person to recognise how much
the city would benefit from a great hotel of luxury; a hotel of the same standing as the Ritz of Paris, or London.
He did not waste time in putting these ideas into practice. Madrid had to offer its visitors something quite extraordinary: a hotel that could satisfy the refined taste of a new breed
of traveller, who at that time was only just beginning to be known as a "tourist".
The dream of the monarch began to take shape. The construction of the Ritz had begun - spacious, luminous and comfortable - with the endorsement of the Ritz Development
Company
Charles Mewes of Paris, and Luis de Landecho of Madrid were the architects in charge and in just a short time the walls of the future hotel rose above the magnolias, cedars and
acacias of the Prado.
At the time of its opening the Hotel Ritz provided the latest in luxury and comfort, offering four to five bathrooms in each section of the hotel and a telephone on each floor next
to the elevator. With facilities like these, the Ritz instantly became one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

The first record of the existence of a small castle named “Negrales” is cited
between 1590 and 1600.
After several events and mishaps in 1790 a country palace was built over the original foundations of the castle, preserving the old cellars and passageways. The four towers of this
palace dominated the rich fertile lands watered by the rivers Henares and Jamara. During the nineteenth century a member of the owning family of the “Marquis of Villamejor”
Palace, en enthusiastic horse breeder, founded the “Figueroa” Stud. Parts of the stables are still preserved.
With the passing of the centuries the “Palace” lost its towers but its interior remained intact as well as the group of cottages, granaries, stables, courtyards, cellar and tiny chapel
which was once the centre of the agricultural and livestock employment of the community of “El Negralejo”.
The palace has recently been restored and transformed into a restaurant that scrupulously maintains its pure Castilian flavours. Ancient tools, cooking vessels, farm implements,

This palace was constructed at the start of the 19thcentury, with a plain facade. The interior vaunts lavish Isabelline style decoration from the era.
Lying in the heart of old and cultural Madrid, it was the main hub of aristocratic social life.
Set in the town centre of Chamartín de la Rosa, a small village, which formed part of the Infantado estate, and lays to the north of Madrid. It was restored in the mid 18th century.
Its original shape was destroyed, but its civic facade is still intact.
It possesses four rooms for 120/140 pax, 100pax, 110 pax and a meeting room for 32 pax. Receptions can be held in the garden for 200/300pax standing.
Palacete de Pastrana enclosures “Antonio Vicente Monquete” Auditorium.
The area compromises a theatre room, with a capacity of 486 people; two annexed rooms and a spacious entrance hall.
Due to its characteristics and location it offers the perfect choice for symposiums and conferences.
History

north of Madrid Village.
In 1679 these possessions went to Catalina Mendoza, eighth Duchess of Infantado who, once she married Ruy Gómez de Silva, became Duchess of Pastrana.
From the palace, built in 1860 and under romantic influence, stands out its elegant façade and the splendid gardens, trapezoid shape, looking out over
