About GIPE
Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) is
one of the oldest research and training institutes in
Economics in the country. Established in 1930, the
Institute is registered under the Societies Registration Act,
1860, and the Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950. The
Servants of India Society, founded by late Shri Gopal
Krishna Gokhale, are the Trustees of the Institute.
The primary object of the Institute is to conduct research
into the economic and political dimensions of the Indian
society, and to provide training to researchers in this
domain. Under the pioneering leadership of late Professor
D. R. Gadgil, its first Director, the Institute set exalted
standards for high quality research, teaching and training
in diverse branches of economics.
In view of the eminent and sustained contribution of the
Institute to teaching, training and research in Economics
since its inception, and in recognition of its potential to
emerge as a centre of excellence in the field of teaching and
research in Economics, the University Grants
Commission, in 1993, granted to the Institute the status of
a Deemed to be University.

the field of agricultural economics, the Union Ministry of
Food and Agriculture established the Agro Economic
Research Centre (AERC) at the Institute in 1954. Over
the past seven decades, the AERC has completed over 200

from evaluative and fact-finding surveys, many analytical
studies are carried out in the PRC. Recently, a study on
cost of health care in the public hospitals in Maharashtra
has been completed at the Centre. The Centre has just
completed two rounds of World Bank-sponsored research
study on quality of health care (client and provider
satisfaction). The demography of India's tribal population
is another recently completed research project at the
Centre.

Why Recruit from GIPE?
Students at Gokhale Institute undergo a rigorous two year M.Sc. program that equips them with the skills necessary to
thrive in a challenging work environment. The following are some of the broad areas to which the students have been
exposed and thus will be valuable resources to any institution that they will become a part of.
6
Economic and Financial Analysis
Data Analysis & Forecasting
The Response mechanisms towards real and
monetary factors and the inter-linkages between
various events that affect the economy are very
important facets that the participants in the financial
market need to track. A thorough understanding of
such factors is crucial to have an edge over peers.
The role of predictive analysis in taking business
decisions has become critical and has been
continuously evolving. The econometric modelling
techniques that are imparted in the institution keep in
mind the contemporary trends and needs of the
industry.
Investment Banking
Risk Advisory & Insurance
A thorough understanding of macroeconomics,
fundamental techniques and quantitative finance are
the core skills needed in an investment banking role.
The students at Gokhale Institute of Politics and
Economics are well trained in these techniques.
Risk identification and management is a critical
process involved in developing efficient and forward
looking models. The core skills needed in the roles of
risk management and risk mitigation are imparted to
the students at Gokhale Institute of Politics and
Economics through the various courses that form part
of the two year curriculum.
Development Sector
Research
The course framework is such, that it provides a
different perspective to students, aiding them in
understanding the chronic socio-economic issues
facing the contemporary world. This enables the
formulation of effective policies that are economically
feasible.
Research is the backbone of innovation. Any new
business model needs to undergo scrutiny in order to
become economically viable. Strategy supported by a
clear understanding of key economic principles
impacting the business helps to conceptualize ideas in
an efficient manner.
Media & Publishing
Sales & Marketing
Students at Gokhale Institute of Politics and
Economics are well versed with the current economic
issues facing the world and are well equipped to
articulate their own opinion as well as report on the
issue. The course prepares them for an unbiased
impact analysis that forms the core of any media and
publishing venture.
Marketing strategies rely on fundamental economic
principles that are crucial to not only entrepreneurs
but established firms. Analytical skills rooted in
economic theory provide an extra edge to
comprehend the significant aspects and also to take
positions on a more informed basis.
Alumni Speak
Sanjay Jha
Executive Director
Dale Carnegie Training India
Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics(1980-82)
“There was this instinctive feeling that it was a distinctive educational institution, one of the
finest in economic research, behind its otherwise sober, unassuming demeanor. The
professors pondered deep into meticulous detail, and one began to experience learning
economic theory in a different light. Suddenly, we discovered as students the fascinating
world of micro and macroeconomics, beyond mere complex models to its applicability in
the real world.Decades later, I consider my post-graduation at Gokhale Institute as having
given me a wider, global mind-set at problem-solving; every variable counts. Also, that the
devil is in the details. And most importantly, that resource allocation, be it physical, time,
financial or human assets, is fundamental to success. I have constantly leveraged those two
years at GIPE in my decision-making and business calls. They have made a fundamental
impact in helping me take a catholic view of critical issues.”
DebopamChaudhuri
V.P. Research and Chief Economist
Zyfin Research
Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics(2003-2005)
“I take great pride in my association with Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics. My
deep gratitude evolves from the intense exposure to global economic literature that has left
an enduring impression on my career path. The institute is unique in its pragmatic approach
towards training. The curriculum has been etched out by academic stalwarts and focuses less
on text books and more on journal publications, to acquaint students with latest research
and developments globally. Its serene existence amidst a lush landscape and splendid library
adds to the intellect of this establishment.”
Syed ZubairNoqvi
Assistant Director,
Office of Chief Economic Adviser (Dr.Arvind Subramanian),
Ministry of Finance, Government of India
Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (2008-2010)
The unique feature of this Institution is the flexibility it provides to students to chalk out
their course structure by giving them a broad choice of electives. All students need not be
equally strong in every dimension of economics/finance and this fact is respected by the
Institute. The dedicated faculty coupled with access to the famous DhananjayaRaoGadgil
library, with its plethora of resources is all that one needs for quest of knowledge.
GIPE is an Institution that allows the students to engage in debates and discussions (both on
and off-campus), participate in umpteen number of team activities and learn to live and care
for each other as a family in a cocooned hostel campus - all of which harnesses the overall
persona of the students and empowers them to shine as smart and confident individuals in
the professional world.

M.Sc. Economics
M.Sc. Economics is a two year post graduate programme, which blends economic theory with
its empirical application in a balanced way to enhance the understanding of economic policies
at the national and international level. The programme focuses on Microeconomics,
Macroeconomics, Public Policy and International Trade and Finance. The course curriculum
provides dedicated teaching in sixteen advanced compulsory courses and four elective courses.
The Institute provides an interesting portfolio of twelve optional courses. The syllabi of the
courses are designed and updated in such a way, so that the students master the art of
application of the subject in real world situations. The rigorous evaluation process ensures
proper testing of students' capabilities.
Training in advanced econometrics and its application through hands on software training is a
key feature of the programme. In addition, the curriculum offers many other inter-disciplinary
areas that widen the opportunities of students to frontier research. They are well trained to build
simple theoretical models, initiate empirical research, and evaluate findings. The meticulous
and advanced two year programme serves as an excellent foundation for finding a career in the
corporate sector, research and academics.
