But there’s so much more to the Y than one might think. From exercise to education, from volleyball to volunteering, from preschool to preventive health, the Y doesn’t just strengthen our bodies – we strengthen community. We’re a cause, dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We’ve been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow, and thrive. Yet we’re called to do so much more. Our region faces new challenges that create a greater need than ever for the work we do every day. Fortunately, where some see obstacles, we see opportunities to make a difference. For 28 years, our Y has been here: Developing and delivering programs that emphasize prevention and a proactive commitment to Healthy Living. Partnering with educators and parents to support learning, health and well-being long after school hours. Serving as a gathering place for individuals of all backgrounds to come together on common ground. The Marshfield Area YMCA is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected, and secure children, adults, families, and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child, and when our community comes together for the common good. In reviewing the 2014 Annual Report, you will read about many of our accomplishments but more importantly you will read about stories of impact. As we move beyond 2014, we will focus on collaboration, developing quality youth programs, strengthening our roots in the community, continuing with facility and equipment upgrades, and building on our YMCA’s legacy. Teri Wilczek Chief Volunteer Officer John Nystrom Chief Executive Officer Today, the Y is at a tipping point of making true, community-wide change. It is our volunteers, donors, staff and supporters who have made this progress possible. And it is the volunteers and staff, working together, who will drive the Y and the communities we serve forward. We are thankful for the many volunteers, donors, and members whose commitment to our mission is so critical to our continuing success. Sincerely, Teri Wilczek Chief Volunteer Officer John Nystrom Chief Executive Officer 3 | mfldymca.org 2014 HONOR ROLL 10,427 MEMBERS AND PARTICIPANTS Child Watch at the Y CHILDREN LEARN TO SWIM 1,161 Swimming at the Y $302K FINANCIAL SUBSIDY AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT Festival Foods Turkey Trot KIDS IN DAY CAMP AND AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS YMCA Healthy Kids Day 4 | mfldymca.org 369 MEMBERSHIP 2014 9117 2013 9167 Senior Adult 319 428 Adult 998 1012 5212 850 5018 809 84 73 College Youth 139 197 111 157 AWAY 1054 1008 Special 264 551 TOTAL MEMBERS SERVED Family Single Parent Family Healthy Hearts/Therapy Marshfield Area YMCA Summer Day Camp Program FINANCIALS For Years Ending December 31, 2014 and 2013 (audited by Hawkins, Ash CPAs, LLP) Unrestricted Net Assets Revenue Membership Fees Program Revenues Contributions In-Kind Contributions Grants Fundraising Other Net Assets Released from Restrictions Total Revenue 2014 1,026,015 725,855 139,846 12,150 7,816 12,968 28,062 39,268 1,991,980 2013 1,040,792 672,186 120,738 9,450 8,919 10,635 41,597 40,205 1,944,522 Expenses Program Services Management and General Fundraising Unallocated Payments Total Expenses 1,697,395 248,192 100,959 40,429 2,086,975 1,609,669 251,122 97,735 38,546 1,997,072 Change in Unrestricted Net Assets Change in Temporary Restricted Net Assets Change in Permanently Restricted Net Assets Change in Net Assets (94,995) (4,934) 147 (99,782) (52,550) 875 (51,675) 5 | mfldymca.org YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Nurturing the potential of every child and teen Y Summer Day Camp Field Trip Y Summer Day Camp Community Garden Harvest OUR IMPACT: We believe all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Our Y provides $91,507 in assistance for children and teen programs: After School, Youth Aquatics, Day Camp, Water Wise and Youth Sports programs, which are intended to promote personal achievement and support working families. 1,914 kids are enrolled in these programs that enable them to learn, grow, and thrive in a safe and nurturing environment. Holly and Kayin are so thankful for the YMCA Financial Assistance Program. Because of this program, they have been able to participate in fitness classes, swim lessons, and summer day camp. Holly says “the quality of care in the summer day camp is excellent and the best part is that neither Kayin or myself have ever been made to feel like we were less welcome or undeserving because we could not pay the full amount.” “Everyone is so kind and we are treated with the same respect and care as everyone else. That to me is huge!” Holly states. “Because of the financial assistance program at the Y, my son has developed athletic skills and self-esteem. He comes home every day with a smile on his face and is always excited and proud to tell me his accomplishments in the swimming pool or on the rock climbing wall. I love that we have a place to go where we feel welcome and also can work on fitness and personal growth. Every day we are here is a new adventure and a new learning experience. It not only benefits my child, but provides me an opportunity to help him grow and to be a part of it. I can’t say enough how thankful I am for the Y’s financial assistance program.” 18% Of the children enrolled in swim lessons are learning this lifelong skill thanks to the Annual Support Campaign. 6 | mfldymca.org HEALTHY LIVING Improving the community’s health and well-being 16% Of our members are able to belong as a result of our community giving and financial assistance program. OUR IMPACT: We are committed to helping people live longer, healthier lives. With a mission centered on balance, we bring families closer together, encourage good health, and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun, and shared interests. $163,923 in direct assistance was provided to children, adults, and families to allow them to afford their Y membership and wellness programs. 10,427 children, adults, and seniors were active and engaged members and program participants at our Y through personal fitness activities, wellness classes, and Youth Fit 4 Life. In August 2013, Phil was involved in a rock slide resulting in a compound fracture of the femer and tibula of both legs, fracture of left arm, shoulder separation and amputation of a finger. After a few weeks in an Idaho hospital, he was transferred to a nursing home in Marshfield, where he began rehab. A month later, he was discharged from the nursing home. He then began physical therapy at Marshfield Clinic two days a week. A regular Y member who used the Marshfield Area YMCA to maintain health, he now found it to be a necessity for his rehabilitation. Along with the two days a week at Marshfield Clinic Physical Therapy, he added working out at the YMCA five days a week. He treated his Y visits for rehab as a part-time job, reporting for work. Rehab progressed as a result - progression such as being able to use the YMCA stairs rather than the elevator. His physical therapists gave him exercises to incorporate at the Y and also made sure that he was not developing any bad habits in the rehab process. After his wounds were healed, he used the Y’s whirlpool, therapy pool, and swam laps in the large pool. Even though Phil has some workout equipment at home, the Marshfield Area YMCA was a critical part of his successful rehab, along with the support and encouragement from staff and fellow members. Phil has now returned to his full-time job. For 28 years, our Y has been developing skills and emotional well-being through welcoming all people and building a healthier community through collaborations. We provided in-kind support valued at $35,782 to 32 community-based organizations through facility usage, access to training, partnership and free programs open to the entire community. Rick and Barb Mueller, Co-Chairs for the 2014 YMCA Annual Campaign, know how fortunate they are to work and live in a caring community like Marshfield. They have seen first-hand the generosity and compassion that the residents of Marshfield consistently give when the need is apparent, and the cause is just. The Muellers realize the value of a healthy lifestyle. “While training over the years for different events, we’ve used the resources of the YMCA to keep in shape, and we know that so many others can benefit the same way we have. Unfortunately, financial barriers, and family or child care issues, can prevent people from helping themselves through a healthy, active lifestyle.” The Annual Campaign raises money for scholarships and programs that benefit all age groups. Having been a stay-at-home mom for 17 years, Barb knows that active kids are healthier, happier, and tend to make healthier choices as they grow. “I feel strongly that kids should be able to exercise and play, and socialize with other kids in a healthy environment, and certainly the Y offers that. Unfortunately, we know that there are financial issues that prevent parents and kids from participating in all the benefits and programs the Y has to offer.” Rick and Barb also know that those issues span across the generations. “So many Senior Adults could benefit too, but many are on small fixed incomes that make joining the Y difficult. Think of the incredible health improvements and social connections those Seniors could enjoy with just a bit of exercise on a regular basis.” 100% Of the people who want to participate in Y programs are able to do so, regardless of their ability to pay. 8 | mfldymca.org 8 | mfldymca.org OUR DONOR The following people and companies donated to the 2014 Annual Campaign. We are very grateful for the generosity of those who consider the mission of the YMCA a worthy recipient of their time and resources. Many families in the Marshfield area benefit from the dedication of these kind donors. OUR CAUSE TO STRENGTHEN THE FOUNDATIONS OF COMMUNITY Everything we do is designed to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve health and well-being, and motivate people to support their neighbors. Our goal is to bring more services to more people in the key areas of: Youth Development: 2,229 area youth are taking a greater interest in learning; making smarter life choices; and cultivating the values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, the pursuit of higher education, and goal achievement. Healthy Living: 10,427 area adults and youth receive the support, guidance, and resources needed to achieve better health and well-being. Social Responsibility: The Marshfield Area YMCA helped 461 people and businesses give back and assist their neighbors by offering them opportunities to volunteer, advocate, and support programs that strengthen community.
