VanDrie Group
E 1 The VanDrie Group: a family history. The Dutch-owned VanDrie Group is not only the world market leader in veal, but also a company built on the best family traditions. Jan van Drie bought his first newborn calf to raise in the early 1960s. VanDrie Group Today, with more than 10 companies, the group is the largest integrated veal producer in the world and therefore the world market leader in veal and the largest calf milk producer. Backed by Safety Guard, a unique integral chain management system, some 1.4 million calves are processed each year, more than 95% of which are exported all around the world. The VanDrie Group satisfies approximately 25% of European demand for veal. Jan van Drie ‘It’s a company to be proud of. All companies in the VanDrie Group are 100% aware of their responsibility for optimal quality in the products to be supplied. I raised them to have respect for people, animals and nature. Furthermore, integration is the perfect answer to constantly That’s why our logo contains the words: controlled quality veal.’ changing consumer desires and market trends. Therefore VanDrie Group, an integrated production chain, is unique in the world. The calf on a pedestal. Respect for people, animals and quality has been part and parcel of the VanDrie Group for generations. It is at the heart of our professional approach and partnership, and the principle behind the product we ultimately supply: Controlled Quality Veal. 3 Calf husbandry. The VanDrie Group’s calves are exclusively from controlled farms. The number of calf-husbandry operations under the company’s own control currently numbers over 1.200. The VanDrie Group is a fervent supporter of housing The Chain calves in groups. All calves are housed in groups in spacious, well-ventilated stables. The stables allow for plenty of daylight. Specialised supervisors support veal farmers in their work. Continual research yields the latest ideas, which are applied at the farms. Modern management systems ensure the consistently high quality of the product. Controlled Quality Jan van Drie Jr: Veal is guaranteed by our own Safety Guard quality system across the board. ‘Business has been in The EC-accredited Veal Calf Quality Guarantee Foundation (SKV) carries out our blood since we were strict inspections for prohibited substances. children. Maintaining our business contacts is ver y important to me.’ 5 Calf milk powder production. Based on whole milk replacement products, balanced nutrition is assembled that ultimately assures the tender, delicate veal delivered to the consumer. Production under optimum control conditions is carried out in ultramodern plants in the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. Some of these plants produce semi-finished products processed at other plants to create the final product, calf milk powder. A location in the Netherlands manages the purchasing and routing of high-quality raw materials. Together, the production units manufacture approximately 550,000 tonnes of calf milk annually. All ingredients used to produce calf milk are sampled and tested and, René van Drie: ‘We would not exist if approved, released for production, recorded and archived, ensuring continuous tracking and tracing from ingredient to final product. without the dedication of veal farmers. Their professionalism is the basis of our The slaughterhouses. integration.’ The VanDrie Group’s production is made to measure. This begins at the farm, where calves are housed by the desired breed and origin. All veal products are delivered according to client specifications. These may refer to the shape, weight and colour of the meat. Any desired cut can be produced during the processing of the meat. Packaging is also done in the way requested by the client: boxes, foil and product information stickers are produced according to agreed specifications. The VanDrie Group therefore delivers a tailor made concept, at any time of day, around the world. Two of the VanDrie Group’s slaughterhouses in the Netherlands – T. Boer & zn in Nieuwerkerk a/d IJssel and Ekro in Apeldoorn – are the largest veal slaughterhouses in the world. A unique feature of the VanDrie Group slaughterhouses is that each cut is labelled with the identification number of the individual animal, so that all information can be traced at any time. 6 7 The following quality and control systems are applied in the VanDrie Group, involving the undermentioned inspection and registration bodies: ISO 22000, ISO 9001:2000, FSSCS, HACCP, BRC, VWA, AID, GMP+B3, GVP, IKB, NRS, SKV, CBS, Halal certification, GMP-B10, Q&S, SGS, Lloyds, Deltacon, Sanitel, IKV, DSV, Dir. Dept. Agriculture, EDE, Qualité France, CERVAC, Gendarmerie, Douane, La Police, Brigades specials DSV, Ofival, AFAQ, DGCRF, DRIR. VealVision: Transparency through the Internet. The VanDrie group is a transparent organisation. The group believes in openness and socially responsible production. The VanDrie Group considers the Internet an important medium for giving clients, consumers and governments an understanding of its production methods. The Safety first. Safety Guard: the VanDrie Group’s integrated quality system. This quality system guarantees food safety throughout the entire production process. The basis of Safety Guard is HACCP, which is implemented throughout the VanDrie Group. The VanDrie VanDrie Group has therefore developed a website (www.vealvision.com) where all information on a batch of veal that has been received can be traced. After obtaining a password, clients can retrieve the information on the veal they have received. VealVision also enables them to find out more about the farmer responsible for the calf in question. VealVision makes information on all the group’s calves available anywhere in the world. Group is the first integrated producer to be awarded a Food Safety Supply Chain System certificate, issued by Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance Ltd. Safety Guard is also configured to meet the requirements of clients worldwide. The core of Safety Guard is the traceability system implemented throughout the chain. The basis in every phase of the production process is the animal’s individual earmark, the ID code, which remains associated with the animal and the meat. Even when the meat is processed further in the deboning plant, the ID code is still associated with each primal cut, allowing traceability to the level of the individual animal. This means data can be collected both upstream and downstream. This is another example of the difference between VanDrie Group and other veal producers. 8 9 Group Grown veal is high-quality veal from calves kept in an animal-friendly manner. All calves reared according to VanDrie Group’s Group Grown® concept are kept in Group Grown groups. Professional veal farmers ensure the groups are correctly composed to make ® the animals feel comfortable. Spacious, well-ventilated stables also contribute to their welfare. Furthermore, animal welfare is enhanced by the composition of the menu. In addition to calf milk powder, the menu for the calves is completed by cellulose, including green maize, further promoting the natural development of the calves and with it their well-being. Group Grown® veal is safe veal. Safety Guard is the quality system that ensures this safety. The SKV (an independent, government-inspected body) also tests intensively for the presence of prohibited growth stimulants and medication. Group Grown® veal is easy to digest. It is low in cholesterol and high in vitamins and minerals. Group Grown® is a tasty, light product that fits in modern times. Group Grown® veal is easy to prepare and can be combined infinitely with other products. The success of Group Grown® is partly due to the fact that it suits all dietary cultures. It suits everyone’s taste. 11 Stimulating demand. Veal originates as part of the commercial utilisation of by-products from dairy farming. After all, cows do not produce milk unless they give birth to a calf annually. Veal is now a valued delicacy that is in demand in countless countries. This is due in no small part to Marketing the marketing efforts of the VanDrie Group. These efforts continue to this day. The demands of clients are continually increasing in number and variety and they often differ from one country to another. The VanDrie Group’s integration concept encourages this in product development, logistics and service. All efforts have resulted in various distinctions, including the 2005 Logistics Award (Safety Guard) and honourable mention in the MVO nominations.
