SALESIANS SARRIÀ | 2015 - 2016
Interview with José
“Salesians Sarrià reaffirms its spirit as a welcoming, Abascal, Principal of
inclusive college, in pursuit of quality” Salesians Sarrià
At Salesians Sarrià, since the
begining, we have understood
that Vocational Education
and Training (VET) should
be linked to the business world.
This sensitivity has led us to be
a leader in the sector, both for
companies that entrust us with
their professional profile needs,
and for students, who know
for certain they will leave our
college with technical and human impeccable education, with
a practical experience that will
allow them to develop naturally
in the workplace.
The relationship between college and business is promoted
from different areas, as explained by our principal, José Abascal:
Why is the relationship with business so important?
Nowadays, it is essential that Vocational colleges have a close
relationship with companies for two reasons: first, this enables
us to work with the latest technology, and secondly, to know
business needs and take action from the field of
education to meet them. Being aware of the labour market demands, we can guarantee a higher
student qualification and employability.
« It is essential that
vocational colleges have
a close relationship with
companies »
Which advantage does this link offer to
companies?
From our experience, we realised that companies welcome with satisfaction qualified professionals in those areas they need the most.
For example, we are currently asked for industrial mechanics with knowledge of robotics,
since most production processes are automated.
Salesians Sarrià has integrated robotics in both Electrics and
Mechanics cycles, profiles that are highly demanded. In addition, companies that collaborate with our college have preferred access to our Career Service for qualified graduates.
PRESENTATION
During the 2015-2016 academic year, we have made a great
organisational effort and have achieved that 90% of our
cycles can be followed through a Dual VET system
(Apprenticeships) by those students who want to. A fact that
both students and companies find very positive.
Let’s talk about students ... what does this Dual VET
system new model offer them?
Students are the main beneficiaries of Dual VET as it enables them to learn the profession empirically by practising some hours in a company with a paid internship.
This way, the student acquires a real prospect of the
professional world which facilitates the transition to
employment.
What are the main education news for the next academic
year?
As we mentioned before, our college is very sensitive to labour market demands, so as to adjust our students’ education to real needs. This is why we review and upgrade our
educational offering every year, if necessary. Next year 1617 we will launch three new Vocational Training cycles.
In Graphic Arts, a Higher-Level Vocational Education, we’ll
have the new programme “Design and Graphic Production
Management” which will be offered in the 2x3 mode and
will give students the most complete qualification they can
get. We will also add the “Industrial Mechatronics” cycle
in the 2x3 mode, in order to respond to the companies’ demand for profiles specialising in this field. As for Middle-Level Vocational Education, we offer a new programme: “Care to
People in a Situation of Dependency”, with which we aim
at extending our offering to the service sector, which is one of
the main engines of our economy.
All these news are for the field of Vocational Training...
What about High School degrees?
Here, the biggest news for the year 2016-2017 is that we will
offer the International Baccalaureate (IB®), which aims at
educating people that have an international mind so that they
can acquire a high level of responsability both at a personal
and a social level.
on in the InnovaFP programme, promoted by the Catalan
Education Department. Through this programme, our students develop real projects for the companies that need them.
At the beginning of the year we organized an event to present
our Services Charter to companies, which precisely wants to
promote and maximize the relationship between our college
and business to share knowledge and take advantage of it for
both parties.
Which is the college social committement?
Salesians Sarrià stands firm in its spirit as a welcoming, inclusive college, in pursuit of quality. We are a
Christian college, which has the vocation of social service as one of its foundational values. This is why education in solidarity and social committement is a key element. This vocation is translated in specific lines of action.
In our closer surroundings, I would highlight the project
We Revise Together, a volunteering scholastic reinforcement for children from Sarrià in collaboration with Social
Services. At an international level, we take part in the project
Share The Light, with an English Salesian college. It is a
cooperation project in Zambia we perform at a reception
center for orphan girls which is managed by Salesian nuns.
Finally, as a result of our corporate social responsability,
we also offer a wide educational programme to all our staff,
as well as choices to ease their family life reconciliation. For
instance, we offer a summer school for the children of all our
employees, which is managed by Salesian Youth Movement
instructors, which has more participants every year.
« Language learning
is present in all of our
programmes »
What are the main projects Salesians
Sarrià is currently working on?
We are committed to a borderless education.
We have a clear international vocation and
language learning is present in all our programmes. In this regard, every year we organize different exchange programmes with
European colleges and offer the possibility of
doing internships in foreign companies.
We also work to boost innovation. We implant critical
thinking, quality work culture and the entrepreneurial spirit
that characterises us. An example of this is our participati-

OUR
COLLEGE
Our College
With over 130 years of history, Salesians Sarrià is a pioneer in quality teaching,
which offers its experience to post-compulsory education: the Spanish Baccalaureate and Vocational Education and Training (VET).
We work every day to be able to respond to the needs of young people, in a family
atmosphere and through a friendly and direct treatment. In this line, and following St. John Bosco’s style, we pay special attention to build an educational
relationship of trust that allows us to accompany each of our students in their
growth process.
Our aim is to promote a new professional model with a consolidated technical
training and both transversal values and skills that companies increasingly
value. Not only do we want to teach professionals, but also autonomous individuals that are responsible for their work.
One of our most important work lines is the implementation of the Dual VET
system, since we understand the importance to be in constant contact with
the companies and organizations to work together in the students’ training
process. On the other hand, as for Baccalaureate, we believe the application
of new methodologies and resources to be essential to work in the classroom, giving a key
role to languages and TAC in the learning
process of our students.
• We issue professional certifications complementary to formal qualifi-

• We have an International Relations department which coordinates
intnernships and stays in different European countries.

(Escola Universitària Salesiana de Sarrià).
• We provide students and families with a psycho-pedagogical attention and guidance service.
• We have a Job Pool for students and alumni.
To achieve these goals, we have a team of enthusiastic educators who put their knowledge
and technique at the disposal of the integral
growth of each student. We are committed
to a clear regulatory system that promotes
respect for everybody’s rights and duties and
we offer tutoring and attention to diversity
plans, guaranteeing personalised attention to
students.
Teachers, service staff and students together,
we build a big family, within and outside the
classroom.
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME | OUR COLLEGE
Our Pastoral Programme
We introduce you the Annual Educational Pastoral Programme (PEPA) which
states that our college, as a priviledged educational facility, plans to go beyond formal teaching, as it pursues a comprehensive education for the individual: values, attitudes, skills, a deep understanding of life and trascendence, etc.
The role model to which we aspire is defined from the times of Don Bosco
in the Preventive System: the honest citizen and the good
Christian. College must therefore be a place for constant innovation as well as educational and evangelizing research at
the service of the young and society as a whole.
« We pursue a comprehensive
To this end, we work to provide our students with a high
quality theoretical and technical education in order to become competent professionals, while ensuring a solid human
training which will help them complete their maturity process. We propose to work together to help our college become
a space that enables the maturity of the search for the meaning of life through the experience of faith.
education for the individual
beyond formal teaching »
In this new academic year, from Salesians Sarrià we want to help build a fairer and more supportive society by promoting different activities that help
spread these values. That is why our educational activities throughout the
year will have a common theme expressed in the motto “BEAT!” (“BATEGA!”).
Against the temptations of falling into passivity, routine and superficiality, we
invite you to live with intensity from creativity and innovation, looking at life
with depth. To beat is to set a genuine and unique rythm, to live our desires
and dreams passionately, to feel full of life and to want to spread this life to
others. To beat is feeling the eyes of God in our lives, it is to put faith and hope
to the minor difficulties that want to paralyze us.
You are young,
starting from scratch,
live with passion…
BEAT!

SALESIANS SARRIÀ | 2015 - 2016
A Sustainable College
We know a better future also depends on us and this is why we want to contribute to building a culture of sustainability with the help of everyone being
part of our college.
« We promote the education
community’s involvement in
improving the environment »
Salesians Sarrià is certified as escola+sostenible, a recognition that encourages participation and the active implication
of the educational community so as to improve the environment by adding educational values for sustainability in all the
aspects of the life in our college.
Salesians Sarrià’s Sustainability Plan intends to foster
knowledge of nature and the main dangers it faces, to encourage the respect for natural wealth and the willingness to
preserve it, and act in a respectful way with the environment.
This year we will continue with the implementation of the
following improvement measures both within the college and
in its surroundings, as well as new ones:
• Follow-up of the Observatory for Sustainability’s
activity, a place for reflexion consisting of teachers,
non-teaching staff and students.
Salesians Sarrià promotes projects
that are respectful with the
environment
• Performance of activities arising from our committement
as a more sustainable college (escola+sostenible).
• Working with sustainability in every module or subject, as well as in
every tutoring session.
• Paper saving while sending information to families via e-mail.
• Consolidation of public transportation use during visits.
• Encourage sustainable habits and responsible behaviour (two-sided
printing for projects, waste recycling, sustainable packaging, promotion material, etc.).
• Addition of companies having sustainable-related initiatives in technical visits.
• Establishment of a sustainability and solidarity protocol for the
different college parties and all the activities by the Salesian Youth
Movement (SYM).
• Sustainable waste management both at a domestic and at an industrial level.
• Expert consultation on power saving (efficient heating, heat insulation...)
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME | OUR COLLEGE
A Supportive College
In a global crisis scenario, we consider that our role as an education centre is
to approach our education community to the deep meaning of solidarity as
a value. As a Christian college, we understand the fraternal and charitative
dimension of helping others, which makes us understand solidarity as the fair
distribution of goods and social justice.
We believe, then, that the value of solidarity cannot be just
worked during a specific moment of the year or during a particular campaign, but our aim is for it to become a transversal
element during life in the centre: it is the way to understand
the relationship with others which is materialised in several
activities and life options.
In this line, during the year we have managed some solidarity initiatives with the implication of the whole education
community. Among the most relevant activities there are:
• We Revise Together: Project, through which we offer
children from the neighborhood a place to study and
spare time everyday.
The value of solidarity is worked
during the whole year.
• TheBoscoRun to raise funds for the We Revise Together project.
• Two blood donation campaings during the academic year.
• Selling of Intermon Oxfam Fair Trade products and charity cakes.
• Collaboration with the NGO VOLS
thanks to the funds raised with the
sale of artisanal products from Africa
and Latin America.
• Charity chocolate, which proceeds
will be earmarked for the Share The
Light project.
• Sensitisation tutoring, conferences
and exhibitions.
• Charity football and basketball
games.
• Food collection to be sent to the
Food Bank from the social dining
Assís, in the neighbourhood of Sarrià.
• SUMMER BEAT musical charity
performance to contribute to the
college solidarity fund.
Solidarity Projects at
Salesians Sarrià
What is We Revise Together?
Our college aims at offering a space for conviviality, education and
entertainment addressed mainly to postgraduate students from the third
cycle of Primary School to the the first cycle of Secondary School from Sarrià.
With We Revise Together, children have an educational and leisure place
after school. Besides doing homework and reviewing, the kids enjoy their
spare time and a healthy snack at the school facilities.
We Revise Together Project was born from the collaboration between
the Social Services Center from the District of Sarrià and Salesians Sarrià,
with the support of volunteer instructors and former Salesians students.
Cooperation Project in Zambia
Two of our teachers have travelled to Zambia to discover the initiative that
Daughters of Mary Help of Christians carry out in this country and they had
the opportunity to witness the huge impact their teaching programme has.
The English Salesian College Farnborough already works closely with this
project.

SALESIANS SARRIÀ | 2015 - 2016
A Healthier College
Our college is a strategic place to promote the adoption of healthy behaviors.
For this reason, Salesians Sarrià wanted to join the network of colleges that
are part of the program FEM SALUT promoted by the Public Health Agency
of Barcelona.
« Salesians Sarrià is part of
the FEM SALUT programme,
which aims at promoting
healthy behaviour at school »
This plan is based on the participation and commitment of
the entire education community, from teachers, administrative and services staff to students and their families. And it is
materialized in the development of activities in the center so
as to achieve a healthier environment through a methodology that allows students themselves to be responsible for their
attitude.
In order to analyse the projects that had been launched in
this area and to identify potential improvements, last year we
created parent, student, and teaching and non-teaching staff committees. After obtaining their proposals, we analysed them and we decided to priorize
initiatives in the field of physical, emotional and mental health for 2015-2016.
Our education community is
committed to achieveing a healthier
environment.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS | OUR COLLEGE
International Relations
At Salesians Sarrià we work every year to encourage the internationalisation
of our education community through the participation in international projects
and the promotion of English, French and German in our study programme.
Our Students
Students have the opportunity to take part in exchange programmes in foreign colleges. An enriching experience both
personally and academically, which opens the door either to new
cultures and new ways of interacting, and provides the necessary
tools to understand an increasingly complex globalised world.
hese exchanges are performed during two school periods,
going abroad and welcoming others at home by our students.
« We encourage
knowledge,culture and
experience exchange »
The demand for these exchange programs has registered a steady growth in
recent years and demonstrates the importance of learning another language
to communicate properly and in a way to be understood beyond our borders.
Vocational Education and Training students can take part in internships in
the working places (FCT) at European companies with the Erasmus + programme.
This year, Vocational Education and Training students at the Administrative
Management CFGM and at the Administrative and Finance CFGS will participate in the 22nd International Trade Fair of Students Firms 2016, to be
held in Prague.
Besides exchanges, we prepare students for Cambridge’s official exams.
Our Team
The International Relations department participants in the educational
tasks to provide students with a comprehensive preparation, which includes
both the technical resources and human training that ensure them a good
starting point in the labour and academic European market.
Among the tasks performed by this department, there is the
organisation of our college staff training in English and the
teaching of some units of the curriculum in this language;
the organization of Baccalaureate exchanges with English,
French and German colleges, as well as the Vocational Education and Training exchanges in different European colleges.
It is also responsible for managing training programmes in
European companies and for the reception and coordination
of language assistants.
The year 2015-2016 our college will
offer the following student exchange
programmes:
• Salesian College Farnborough, England
• Macclesfield College, England
• Dürer Gymnasium de Nuremberg, Germany
• Fritz-Winter-Gesamtschule, Germany
• Lycée Felix Le Dantec de Lannion, France

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS | OUR COLLEGE
Cooperation Project in Zambia
One of the international projects in which our college has
participated this year has taken place in Zambia, a country
where two Salesians Sarrià teachers travelled to assess the
possibility of cooperating with the initiative developed in this
country by the Daughers of Mary Help of Christians.
The Salesian College Farnborough (England) - with which
we have a special bond because we offer student exchange
from 13 years ago- already works closely with the project. Since childhood, their students are involved in several tasks aimed to collaborate on this project, known as Share the light,
either to obtain financial resources as well as working in situ,
as each summer a group of Baccalaureate students travels to
Zambia.
This year we were invited to accompany them to get first
hand knowledge about the actions being carried out and to
assess the possibility to participate. The proposal was interesting to us, and our professors Ricardo Gámez, head
of the Mechanical and Automotive department, and Marta Pujol, head of the Psychological Counseling service for
Higher-Level VET, traveled to Zambia for 7 days and were
able to closely know the communities Salesian Sisters of St.
John Bosco have at Mazabula, known as City of Joy, and at
Lusaka, called City of Hope.
During the trip, our teachers could see Zambia’s povertystricken population, and the importance of the work carried
out by Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco’s community, as well
as the work still left to do.
The two of them highlight the experience as very positive, both personally
and from the educational perspective, as they have seen the initiative also has
a great impact on students. From now on, we must analyse in depth if we can
collaborate with this important project.

Educational Offering
The Catalan education system is divided into four stages: early childhood
education, primary education, secondary education and post-compulsory education. Salesians Sarrià offers its experience to post-compulsory education,
with a wide range of Baccalaureate and Vocational Education and Training
programmes.
Vocational Training is part of the courses students can take after achieving
the Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) diploma from the age of 16 on.
It is organised in Middle-Level and Higher-Level VET cycles This educational modality seeks to qualify students for the tasks associated with a profession and provides a first theoretical part at the educational center and a second
phase consisting of practical training in the workplace.
There is also the Dual VET (Apprenticeships) system that allows students
to combine their education at college with professional activity, working for a
company which is related to the studies that are studying. Thus, the student
will achieve part of learning in a practical way and through its work in the
chosen company.
Once the ESO diploma is obtained, the other academic output that students
can choose is the Baccaulareate. It takes two years and is usually studied
between the ages of 16 and 18. It is organized in different paths, so that students can choose one according to their interests: Science and Technology and
Humanities and Social Sciences.

Spanish Baccalaureate
The Spanish Baccalaureate prepares students for subsequent studies, both
at a professional level and for university, as well as to access the labour market.
Our goal is to provide comprehensive and versatile training to provide our
students with the necessary tools to pursue higher education.
At Salesians Sarrià we teach Science and Technology, Humanities and Social Sciences itineraries. With a duration of two academic years, studies are
structured in two blocks: a common curriculum for all education paths and
another one that’s diversified into specific subjects for every
modality. Thus, the common block guarantees a basic training to students, while the diversified one enables them to get
specialized according to their preferences and capabilities.
The Baccalaureate schedule is Monday to Friday’s mornings
from 8:00 am to 14:30 pm.
To access the Baccalaureate students need to have obtained
the diploma in Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO) or to
have completed a mid-level training cycle.
After obtaining a Baccalaureate’s degree, students have different academic pathways:
• Undertake university studies, once admission exams are
passed.
• Access to Higher-Level Vocational Training.
Moreover, Baccalaureate forsees that the student performs a Research Paper
(TR), which is handed over during the second year and is supervised by a
teacher. It has a duration of around 70 hours and accounts for 10% of the final
grade. Students choose a topic and an issue to investigate, then they raise a
hypothesis or initial goals, they research and process information, elaborate a
synthesis of the results and conclusions and they finally present a written and
oral report.

The Benefits of Studying Vocational Training
VET programmes are the most chosen ones in European countries such as

SALESIANS DE SARRIÀ | 2015 - 2016
OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH
BUSINESS
Corporate Relations Department
From Salesians Sarrià we work actively to keep a direct contact with companies and organisations from different professional fields in order to understand
their needs and to learn first hand the reality of every moment, with the aim of
promoting exchange of knowledge and the employability of
our students. From this year on, moreover, we are an Accredited Employment Agency by the SEPE (Public Employment Service) [NEW].
« College and business
must share their
knowledge »
Our college has a department dedicated to establishing and
keeping this link, to ensure that these organisations and institutions collaborate in the practical learning process of students and at the same time act as advisers and consultants
in the application of the different formal education curricula, especially in
Vocational Training cycles.
In-company internships offer students their first contact with the labour
world and provide the professional experience they need to join the labour
market.
To facilitate this type of experience to our students, our college has a Career
Service, which manages the various job offers that arrive at the center thanks
to the established agreements with our partner companies, which work in different sectors.
However, the Corporate Relations Department offers Occupational and Continuous Education programmes - also
online- in response to today’s competitive market’s demands.
Many of these courses are also fully funded so that students
and former students can complete their training or be upgraded into new technologies and new ways of working in constant evolution.
Internship programs offer students
their first contact with the labour
world.
COLLEGE-BUSINESS | OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH BUSINESS
Pol Caparrós
CFGM in Microcomputing systems and networks Student
«The Dual VET system gives us experience and knowledge in a real work
situation in the workplace.
This project allows us to work like a regular employee in a company, learning
to live with colleagues and gain experience in exchange for remuneration.
Working as part as our education and receiving remuneration for your work is
a challenge and a great motivation.
In our case, we are learning how to communicate and treat a customer / user
politely and professionally. Like most of us, at the beginning, the students
had no idea how to answer a call, but gradually we’ve earned experience in
how to treat a client easily and fluently».
Miquel Garcia
Dual VET Tutor
«My experience as a tutor is very positive. Our students come at a very young
age, starting the first Middle-level year very nervously and with obvious uncertainty and ignorance about the profession they want to learn. Day by day
they improve their education and there comes a time when they have to demonstrate their knowledge and competence in business practices. The first
days are tough, with morning classes and staying in companies in the afternoon. But students quickly adapt, they see the reality of the workplace, the
meaning of many the activities they do in class and they benefit more fom
free time and improve work and organization capabilities.
This attitude is greatly appreciated by the company, which generally offers
employment contracts to students after their training in the workplace.
It is very rewarding for teachers and parents to participate in boys and girls
maturing process, to observe their commitment to a well done job, and a large
gain in autonomy, responsibility and professionalism».
Sergi Luque
Company -Talleres Autolica Tutor
«The basis of competitiveness and business world transformation in this
country should be based on education and I find no better way than the Dual
formula. It is important that this does not serve only to be full of ourselves
without leading us anywhere.
My experience as a tutor in such modality, tells me that with well-aimed
and prepared students like the ones we have, the transfer college-business is
simple. We wish and hope that this collaboration will go further and that we
do not relax for a second.

SALESIANS SARRIÀ | 2015 - 2016
Careers Service
One of Salesians Sarrià’s primary objectives, in addition to providing
technical training and human quality, is for our students to be employed after
the completion of their studies. Since the founding of our college, we have
helped employers and students to meet.
For this purpose, any company that collaborates with Salesians Sarrià can
provide us with their job posts that need to be covered. Then our college will
make a selection of the profiles that best meet the requested requirements
and send the chosen resumes to the organization.
College students and alumni looking for a job will be able to register on our
digital platform, that hosts our Career Service, as job seekers. Here they will
be able to upload their updated résumés, specifying their skills and capabilities. This platform will be our main source of information when generating
the connection with the job offers received from companies.
This service offers a number of advantages and benefits for both contributor
companies and users, who are registered in the job pool. The first can have
preferential access to a pool of highly qualified professionals, who have the
college’s endorsement. Moreover, people who have registered at the digital
platform will receive support and guidance in their job search.
We work to facilitate employment to
our students.

Dual VET and FCT
At Salesians Sarrià we have adapted our curricula in order that our students
alternate training time at college with time for training and productive activities in companies. This training program provides training skilled workers that are adapted to market needs and ensure the cooperation between
colleges and businesses.
Students will acquire the necessary technique skills to help them in their integration into the labour market, while advancing in their studies. Being able
to apply their knowledge into practice helps them throughout the learning
process and represents an added value for the student. Another key point is
that this education model is financially funded training, which helps ensuring that students have an additional motivation.

Salesians Sarrià makes
the news in the media
Once again, the media have echoed the different initiatives organised by Salesians Sarrià and have focused on our college’s commitment to Dual VT.
In fact, our college principal, Mr. José Abascal, was interviewed in a monograph by the newspaper La Vanguardia which was dedicated to this new VT
model, through which students receive part of the training at our college and
the other, through training and productive activities in company. Also, our
Middle-Level Vocational Training Coordinator, Miguel A. Buendia, participated in the TV programme L’Illa de Robinson by El Punt Avui TV to
present the most innovative projects in this field.
Moreover, TV3 stated, during the news, the companies need for professional
profiles and the work of colleges like Salesians Sarrià to meet this demand.
A report was also broadcasted by 3/24 news channel.
Salesians Sarrià has also been in the news as an employment benchmark,
with only 10% of their students being unemployed after completing their studies. Newspapers such as El Economista and the news agency Europa Press
published these data as encouraging at a time when youth unemployment was
around 50%. In the same line, the channel 8TV broadcasted a report on how
Vocational Training students entry the labour world faster.
The media also covered the session organized by our college about the challenges faced by 2.0 students and innovation within VET, which made it
to the news both in the press and in specialized media in education. Among
them, Radio Nacional, Digital D Barcelona, the website dedicated to teaching Educaweb, the website Compromesos amb l’Educació by the Diputació de Barcelona, and the magazine Educación 3.0.
Moreover, the program Lletra Lligada at Ràdio 4 interviewed our Director
of Vocational Training Studies, Eloy Gonzalez, to talk about career opportunities offered by VT.

AUTOMOCIÓN
Estudiantes

HUMAN TEAM
We are a social, inclusive, respectful, economical and non-selective college
with an open mind and welcoming nature.
Our desire is to present ourselves in a closer way to students and families
through personalized tutoring and teaching and our goal is to foster among
our students values and professional skills that companies value increasingly
more.
We offer activities beyond the classroom: sports, hiking, theater, music, leisure activities, discussion groups and volunteering.
Furthermore, we have a parents of students association, that’s active and participative, and has an educational and leisure activities programme of its own.
« The teacher who is seen only in the classroom
and nowhere else, is a teacher and nothing more;
but let him go with his boys to recreation and he
becomes a brother »
