Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church

“Behold, our light has come, death is no more, though the sun fades
from our sight, God has sent sustaining light. ”
(Attributed to Ambrose of Milan, 4th century )
Okay, so I get it: Advent, like Christmas, seems to come earlier and earlier!
The close-out Gospel passages from the now-previous church year had a lot of “preAdvent” themes that remind us of the passion of our Lord and the apocalyptic, eschatological
end times. God’s coming kingdom, heralded by Jesus, proclaims that the last days are surely
coming.
There is no prediction, no crystal ball, no star reading going on here.
It is fact; it is promise.
Meanwhile, as we wait, there is no shortage of “gloom and doom” to navigate through
as we make holiday plans. The non-Christian, ungodly acts of terror are getting more frequent. Racism rages like an out-of-control forest fire. The world groans in travail, seemingly
unabated throughout all millennia. Wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes and famine were
prophesied by Jesus, and they have continued to inflict suffering on so many.
We get reminders occasionally of how precious and precarious life is. You talk to someone on the phone; they sound fine, and then you get word that they have collapsed dead from
a heart attack or stroke. A car of people heading to do God’s work gets “T-boned” at an intersection. There are unexpected complications from a surgery. Cancer returns.
“Gee, thanks, ‘Pastor Downer’”! Merry Christmas!
We can counteract the cacophony of the world’s unrest by being silent; still; imagining
that first snowfall of peace blanketing the frozen brown grass. (This, from a native Floridian).
We can sow seeds of moral discourse, not vindictive bashing. We can welcome the terrorstricken Holy Family again, and receive with glad thanksgiving the long-expected Jesus.
We need each other, and the relationships that we try to fashion based on the empathizing, unconditional love of Jesus. Along the way may come grudging compromise (“do we
have to go to their house again for Christmas?”), agreeing to disagree on hot-button

topics, loving the person while hating the be2

Thanks to all who served in November!
Great teamwork – thanks be to God!
On Tuesday, November 10th, we served 90 meals, and 27
carry-outs to the hungry. Big thanks go to the following for
preparing and serving: Nancy Dascher, Paul Dascher, Ian
Harris, Richard Harris, Sean Harris, Joe Nieb, Joe Ann
Nieb, Ed Rosenberg, Mary Rosenberg, Mike Swanto, Pam
Swanto, plus other youth volunteers.
We serve on the second Tuesday of each month. This is a
great opportunity for a group, club, or family to serve the
community. There is no financial commitment necessary;
simply a gift of time and service. The entrees for these meals
are provided, but salads, side dishes, and desserts are always appreciated.
We need a new Coordinator for this ministry. It isn’t
hard. It just takes organization and contacting helpers
and servers. Please lift this need up in prayer. Thank
you!
COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS
1. Requested hymns will be sung 15 minutes before the service on
December 6th.
2. December 27th will be a Lessons and Carols Service.
3. If anyone has purses that they don't use and would like to donate to the homeless, please bring them to the church by December 6th. Dorothy Caldwell has a list of hygiene products that will
be put into the purses. She is accepting donations for us to fill the
purses at church, or you can bring a filled purse. The purses will
then be taken to the Interfaith Kitchen on December 8th for distribution.

5. The stove in the church kitchen is up and running. We have
been blessed here at Faith Lutheran in many ways. Volunteers are
going to meet here at the church after the 8:30 breakfast on December 12th to clean out all of the cupboards in the kitchen, wash
everything and organize them.

Also, a few of us are going to Hollerback’s for Breakfast at
9:00 AM on Saturday, December 28, 2016. They serve a
good breakfast at a reasonable cost. Interested? Call or email Bob Bebee at 386-736-7477, flbbs@bellsouth,net. Car
pooling is available.
The organizers of our Harvest Fest, held on October 31,
2015, extend sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to
the success of our event. This includes those who made financial contributions, including Thrivent Financial, the
many people who donated food, pastries and drinks, to our
Montessori school and to the Beacon and Home Town
Newspapers. Special thanks goes out to those who spent
many hours planning, staffing the booths, setting up and
cleaning up. The unicorn ride was a special addition to
our event, thank you.
As a result of the success of Harvest Fest, we were able to
give a sizable donation for our youth activities and toward
purchase of items to re-stock our newly renovated kitchen.
Next year will be even better!

Zebra Longwing Butterfly
A list of items may include but not limited to:
Soap
Wash Cloths
Razors
Shampoo/Conditioner
Comb
Hand lotion
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
The zebra
longwing butterfly
(Heliconius
charitonius)
was designated
the official
state butterfly of Florida in 1996. The zebra
longwing butterfly is found throughout Florida
in hardwood hammocks, thickets, gardens, and
particularly in the Everglades National Park.
Tissues
Sanitary needs
Nail clippers
Emery boards
Socks (one of the most
needed items for a homeless person)
None of these items can be bought with the snap program so
for a homeless female these would be great gifts. We need to
have the items or filled purses by Sunday Dec. 6th.
The zebra longwing butterfly is characterized by
long black wings with distinctive thin stripes
and a slow, graceful flight. It makes a creaking
sound when alarmed. Zebra longwings feed on
nectar and pollen. They are the only butterflies
known to eat pollen, which is probably why they
have a long lifespan (about six months, as compared to a more usual one month for other butterfly species).
To all gardeners and would like to be gardeners. There will be two Saturdays in December we will be mulching and weeding
the Memorial /Butterfly Garden; December
5th and 19th. We will be preparing the garden for the winter season. If you wish to
help please come on out and join us. The
butterflies are still here enjoying the garden.
The zebra longwing butterfly lays its eggs on
passion vine leaves. Passion vines contain toxins
that are consumed by the caterpillars, which
make the adult butterflies poisonous to predators

Pastor Art and I would like to thank each of our Sunday Service
Assistants for all the help they give us each Sunday. Our Sunday
Morning worship experience would not be the same without
each of them. If you would like to join any of these groups please
let me know.

Greeters
The Greeters are the Parking Lot welcoming committee. They get here 20
minutes before service starts and work in pairs with one person taking
the front lot and the other taking the back lot. They assist our visitors &
members getting out of their cars, if raining will bring large umbrellas
out to your car so you do not get wet. They are there to answer any visitor
questions and to invite the people going by the front of the church to
come on in and worship with us.

pantry delivers can be dropped off. They hand out the morning service
bulletins, take up the offering, release the pews for communion and
straighten up after the service.

Acolytes
The Service of the Acolyte includes: Procession in with a lighted taper to
light the altar candles in the worship service as a symbol of Jesus’ coming into the presence of the worshiping community. Before the extinguishing of the last altar candles, the acolytes relight their taper and
then process out into the narthex. This symbolizes that Jesus Christ is
for all people everywhere. It also symbolizes the light of Jesus Christ going out into the world where believers are called to serve. They will also
give and receive the offering baskets and help as communion assistants.

Intercessory prayer is one of the Christian’s most powerful tools. By lifting up those in need, we bring them to the
Lord for His healing hand, strength and comfort.
We pray for those who are chronically ill, that God would be their daily companion and strength:
Laura Coe, Richard Hoel, Nina Eriksen, Linda Feiler, Lloyd Zeller, Kerry Sholtis, Lance Borows, Faith Eriksen
For those who are fighting cancer, that they will know they are not alone in the battle:
Austin Carey, Ray Bebee, Janet Persell, Peter Vrionides, Curt Doroban, Bob Jordan, Alfred Mueller, Isabelle Lee Pritchett, Emily Snyder, Suzie Farris, Judy, Cathy, Mark Creel
We rejoice with those who are recovering form injury, illness, or surgery:
Nina Eriksen, Scott Ridolph, Christopher Menza
For those who are shut in, that they will feel the Lord’s constant presence:
Lucille Eaton (FLHC), Jerry Kimmel, Irma Milward (FLHC), Dick Woodring (FLHC), Millie Glover
We pray for those whose needs are known only to the Lord:
Karin Goranson, Cathy Buchner, Marilyn Snow, Heather Kinney, Preston Kinney, Carolyn Stevens, Dick Woodring,
Dorothy Caldwell, Scarlet Valdez
We pray for the special concerns of our neighbors, our community, our nation and our world:
Our men and women in the military, Habitat for Humanity, All people in war-torn nations, Storm victims, Rain for
areas that need it, For our local, state and national leaders, for those in the grip of addiction to drugs and alcohol and
for their families.
Email you prayer request to [email protected] or contact Faith Eriksen at 736-1799
