Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church DeLand, Florida
Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church DeLand, Florida “Behold, our light has come, death is no more, though the sun fades from our sight, God has sent sustaining light. ” (Attributed to Ambrose of Milan, 4th century ) Okay, so I get it: Advent, like Christmas, seems to come earlier and earlier! The close-out Gospel passages from the now-previous church year had a lot of “preAdvent” themes that remind us of the passion of our Lord and the apocalyptic, eschatological end times. God’s coming kingdom, heralded by Jesus, proclaims that the last days are surely coming. There is no prediction, no crystal ball, no star reading going on here. It is fact; it is promise. Meanwhile, as we wait, there is no shortage of “gloom and doom” to navigate through as we make holiday plans. The non-Christian, ungodly acts of terror are getting more frequent. Racism rages like an out-of-control forest fire. The world groans in travail, seemingly unabated throughout all millennia. Wars, rumors of wars, earthquakes and famine were prophesied by Jesus, and they have continued to inflict suffering on so many. We get reminders occasionally of how precious and precarious life is. You talk to someone on the phone; they sound fine, and then you get word that they have collapsed dead from a heart attack or stroke. A car of people heading to do God’s work gets “T-boned” at an intersection. There are unexpected complications from a surgery. Cancer returns. “Gee, thanks, ‘Pastor Downer’”! Merry Christmas! We can counteract the cacophony of the world’s unrest by being silent; still; imagining that first snowfall of peace blanketing the frozen brown grass. (This, from a native Floridian). We can sow seeds of moral discourse, not vindictive bashing. We can welcome the terrorstricken Holy Family again, and receive with glad thanksgiving the long-expected Jesus. We need each other, and the relationships that we try to fashion based on the empathizing, unconditional love of Jesus. Along the way may come grudging compromise (“do we have to go to their house again for Christmas?”), agreeing to disagree on hot-button IN THIS ISSUE: topics, loving the person while hating the be2 havior they’re engaged in. We can prepare Notes from the Pastor rooms of welcome, tables of fellowship, and 3 December News & Announcements offerings of peace. We can be holy people. Calendar, Birthdays & more news Thank You Service Assistants! Money Matters, Prayer Chain, Poinsettia Dedications Council, Staff and Business Directory 2 4-5 6-9 9-10 8 Located in the basement of the First United Methodist Church of DeLand Thanks to all who served in November! Great teamwork – thanks be to God! On Tuesday, November 10th, we served 90 meals, and 27 carry-outs to the hungry. Big thanks go to the following for preparing and serving: Nancy Dascher, Paul Dascher, Ian Harris, Richard Harris, Sean Harris, Joe Nieb, Joe Ann Nieb, Ed Rosenberg, Mary Rosenberg, Mike Swanto, Pam Swanto, plus other youth volunteers. We serve on the second Tuesday of each month. This is a great opportunity for a group, club, or family to serve the community. There is no financial commitment necessary; simply a gift of time and service. The entrees for these meals are provided, but salads, side dishes, and desserts are always appreciated. We need a new Coordinator for this ministry. It isn’t hard. It just takes organization and contacting helpers and servers. Please lift this need up in prayer. Thank you! COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS 1. Requested hymns will be sung 15 minutes before the service on December 6th. 2. December 27th will be a Lessons and Carols Service. 3. The organizers of our Harvest Fest, held on October 31, 2015, extend sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of our event. This includes those who made financial contributions, including Thrivent Financial, the many people who donated food, pastries and drinks, to our Montessori school and to the Beacon and Home Town Newspapers. Special thanks goes out to those who spent many hours planning, staffing the booths, setting up and cleaning up. The unicorn ride was a special addition to our event, thank you. A big “THANK YOU”! goes out to the following special people who had a hand in assembling shoe boxes to be sent out for this worthy cause. Thanks to their efforts, children will be blessed and touched by God’s love and grace. Dorothy Caldwell, Doris Candalino, Nancy Dascher, Deborah DeGaetano, Karin Goranson, Helen Martin, JoeAnn Nieb, Dorothy Pomeroy, Marianne Stewart, Project Leader, Judy Swiatosz, & Debbie Wuertz Family 1 Michael Ayling (11 year old boy Aaliyah Ayling (8 year old girl Imani Ayling (8 year old girl) Sean Ayling (6 year old boy) Sade Ayling (4 year old girl) We need people to help put up our Christmas tree in the sanctuary. We invite you to come for breakfast on Saturday, December 12th at 8:30, after which we will set up the tree. We especially need younger ones!! COME, HELP, AND BE FED! Family 2 Douglas Smith (17 year boy Troy Lyles (13 year old boy) Family 3 We take unused and unwanted purses, or cosmetic bags that we have cluttering up our closets or drawers fill them with snacks and hygiene and sanitary products and give them out at the Dec 8th Interfaith Kitchen. Kalia Grubbs (2 year old girl) Zebra Longwing Butterfly A list of items may include but not limited to: Soap Wash Cloths Razors Shampoo/Conditioner Comb Hand lotion Toothbrush Toothpaste The zebra longwing butterfly (Heliconius charitonius) was designated the official state butterfly of Florida in 1996. The zebra longwing butterfly is found throughout Florida in hardwood hammocks, thickets, gardens, and particularly in the Everglades National Park. Tissues Sanitary needs Nail clippers Emery boards Socks (one of the most needed items for a homeless person) None of these items can be bought with the snap program so for a homeless female these would be great gifts. We need to have the items or filled purses by Sunday Dec. 6th. The zebra longwing butterfly is characterized by long black wings with distinctive thin stripes and a slow, graceful flight. It makes a creaking sound when alarmed. Zebra longwings feed on nectar and pollen. They are the only butterflies known to eat pollen, which is probably why they have a long lifespan (about six months, as compared to a more usual one month for other butterfly species). To all gardeners and would like to be gardeners. There will be two Saturdays in December we will be mulching and weeding the Memorial /Butterfly Garden; December 5th and 19th. We will be preparing the garden for the winter season. If you wish to help please come on out and join us. The butterflies are still here enjoying the garden. The zebra longwing butterfly lays its eggs on passion vine leaves. Passion vines contain toxins that are consumed by the caterpillars, which make the adult butterflies poisonous to predators 5 Pastor Art and I would like to thank each of our Sunday Service Assistants for all the help they give us each Sunday. Our Sunday Morning worship experience would not be the same without each of them. If you would like to join any of these groups please let me know. Dorothy Caldwell (386)2164014 or [email protected] Greeters The Greeters are the Parking Lot welcoming committee. Before the extinguishing of the last altar candles, the acolytes relight their taper and then process out into the narthex. This symbolizes that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. It also symbolizes the light of Jesus Christ going out into the world where believers are called to serve. They will also give and receive the offering baskets and help as communion assistants.
