LIVING THE QUESTIONS
Living the Questions is
an open-minded alternative to
studies that attempt to give
participants all the answers.
Living the Questions
creates an environment where
participants not only interact
with one another in exploring
the best of today’s theological thought, but together strive to
explore what’s next for Christianity. LTQ features 33 of today’s
leading religious voices in 20 minute video segments.
We initially did this program in 2007 in our church with
three study groups. We have obtained an updated set of the
videos and will conduct the first seven sessions beginning in
late September. (Saturday, Sept. 27 is the planned start date).
We will show a preview of the first two sessions in Wesley Hall
after both Sunday services on Sept. 7 and 14. Signups for the
class will be available on both Sundays.
We had a great response to this series when we first did
it in 2007. If you missed it then, this is your chance; if you
enjoyed it then, this is your chance to participate again and
share with others.

Pedaling Pastor
Welcome back to
another church year of
serving God in our community and
world!
Two words best describe and
distinguish the global United Methodist
Church. Connectional and Episcopal.
Episcopal refers to a polity system
where pastors serve under a Bishop
and cabinet—not a congregation.
Connectional is the way we reach in
and reach out in our communities and
world to do God’s work of bringing
justice to all. Another way of saying that
is to create Heaven right here on Earth.
Our task as faithful Christians is to do
that—no small task to be sure.
One of the features of the
Connectional Church is that we have
churches and mission projects and
partners all over the world. I have
travelled extensively since I was 18 and
I have yet to discover a place where we
do not have a partner somewhere. With
the internet this connection is easier
and easier.
This church year my husband
and I are doing what pastors and
congregations have done for centuries.
We are hosting a pastor Rev. Dr.
Duncan Ibuuri in the US so he can
complete some Clinical Pastoral
Education at UC Davis Medical Center.
He will live with us part of the time and
also be able to stay with members from
Sact 1st UMC where my husband Rev
Don Lee serves as senior pastor.
Don and I have had many
congregations and pastors assist us in
our ministry in far flung lands. We
welcome Rev. Dr. Ibuuri and do pray
you to will enjoy his presence as a
connectional minister and current
leaders in our global church. Please
pray for him and his family.
In Christ, Rev Tana

SPIRITUAL DISCOVERY
I would like to thank the members of Grass Valley UMC for their support of my
ministry. Recently I became a licensed local pastor for Walnut Avenue UMC in
Walnut Creek. Your gift helped me to purchase a new robe for Sunday worship.
I have included photos of Tom and I in action at our new church. We are having
a great time with our congregation! I wish for you many blessings as you
continue your faithful witness. Thank you, Michelle Robbins

CONNECTIONAL MINISTRY!
The Rev. Dr. Duncan Ibuuri
Connection is a hallmark of United Methodism. Rev Don Lee and Rev Tana have
teamed up to assist The Rev. Dr. Duncan Ibuuri who will be visiting Sacramento for one year.
Rev. Dr. Ibuuri is a Methodist clergy from England. His birth country is Kenya, where he was
trained and served for some time. He will be in Sacramento to do Clinical Pastoral Education
at UC Davis Medical Center beginning August 2014 to August 2015. At some time during his
stay with us I will have Duncan preach at GVUMC. He arrived Aug. 13.
Here is a little from Rev. Dr. Ibuuri:
Just to say that I will be 53 in May (!) rather an easy going person. Never smoked all
my life or taken alcohol (I don't know whether it is sweet or bitter!) or any form of drugs etc but
I am not judgmental. Jesus found me while in early years and give my life to Him as Lord
and Saviour - By His grace, I have sort to seek His leadership and direction in my life. He is
always merciful to bring me back to the path when I falter.
My wife is called Joy (she is a dental nurse). Currently working with the Ministry of Defense.
Our son - Daniel has just turned 16 (March). He is currently preparing for General Certificate
of Secondary Education which he will do in May/June 2014. Then, he will proceed to A Levels
in September 2014.
Next to Joy is our daughter Carol, she is 22 and at university - studying for a bachelor's
degree in Forensic Investigation and Psychology.
Winfred (Winnie) turned 21 in January
2014. She is at the University of East
London studying for a bachelors
degree in Law. She is currently on a six
month placement in a law firm in Central
London.
Next is our daughter Purity. She is 26.
Currently doing a second degree
in Therapeutic Radiotherapy at Suffolk
University Campus but spends most of
the time on placement at Cholchester
NHS Hospital (Colchester is 51.2 miles
(82.4 km) northeast of London).

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
I have endorsed the statement below from the National
Interreligious Leadership Initiative for Peace in the Middle East (NILI). For more
information about NILI,
Grace and Peace,
Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr.
Resident Bishop
THE STATEMENT IS AS FOLLOWS:
Jewish, Christian and Muslim Religious Leaders Welcome Ceasefire; Call
Urgently for Renewed Negotiations for a Two-State Peace Agreement
As leaders of American Jewish, Christian, and Muslim national religious organizations,
united in the National Interreligious Leadership Initiative for Peace in the Middle East
(NILI), we welcome the ceasefire agreement of Israel and Hamas, and the negotiations
to make it permanent. We were appalled by the kidnappings and murders of Israeli
and Palestinian teenagers. We believe the loss of even one human life is a tragedy
that grieves God. In the recent weeks of war between Hamas and Israel, we mourn
the innocent civilians killed. We offer our prayers as well for the wounded and for the
families of all the victims of violence.
This tragic escalation of violence demonstrates once again that there is no such thing
as a stable status-quo in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Ideas being promoted in some
circles for returning to the previous status quo or managing the conflict are
dangerous. Acknowledging the recent failed negotiations, we call on Israeli and
Palestinian political leaders to renew negotiations to achieve a two-state peace
agreement, the only realistic resolution of the conflict in which both people can live in
peace, security, and mutual recognition. The crucial choice leaders on both sides face
now is between negotiating a two-state peace agreement with a new sense of urgency
or condemning Palestinian and Israeli children and youth to continued conflict -- more
violence, more suffering, and more deaths.
Page 6
We strongly supported Secretary of State Kerry’s efforts to achieve a negotiated peace
agreement, and urge the United States to renew efforts to reach a two-state
agreement as soon as possible. Recalling President Obama’s words in Jerusalem,
“Peace is necessary...peace is also just…and peace is possible,” we believe the
outline of a possible two-state agreement is widely known, including ideas drawn from
previous official and informal negotiations for fair, realistic compromises. While none
of the previous plans present a complete outline, the Taba Agreement (2000), the Arab
Peace Initiative (2002), People’s Voice Initiative (2003), Geneva Accord (2003), and
the (unofficial) Israeli Peace Initiative (2011) are sources for principled and practical
ideas to help resolve all the issues, including borders and security, settlements,
refugees and Jerusalem.
It is more urgent than ever that the United States and the international community
press for a two-state peace agreement. While appreciating that maintaining a
sustainable ceasefire is now the priority, we would welcome an early opportunity to
meet with Secretary of State Kerry to discuss how we can assist with renewed U.S.
efforts to achieve a negotiated two-state peace agreement. We pledge to mobilize
active public support from members of synagogues, churches and mosques across the
country for active, fair and determined U.S. leadership for peace.

SADDLE PALS PRESENTS – HEROES
ASTRIDE
GVUMC members Jane de’Zell, Melanie
North, Tom Stevenson, and Marilyn and Ken
McCracken, active, founding members of
Saddle pals, have envisioned and birthed
Heroes Astride.
Heroes Astride is a sister program to
Saddle Pals, whose mission is to advance the
independence and quality of life for people with
disabilities and their families through
horsemanship.
Ken McCracken was only 23 when he arrived home from the Vietnam War in
1969. But he had seen more disturbing events during his stint in the Army than most
see in a lifetime. Despite being safely back at home, he found himself flinching and
fidgeting every time a helicopter flew overhead.
When he enrolled in college the teacher asked students to sit in
alphabetical order. McCracken couldn’t do it – he insisted on sitting against the wall.
More than 40 years later, McCracken laments the fact that there weren’t
programs available to support him during his difficult transition back into civilian
life – programs like the one he’s involved in today.
Heroes Astride is based on the premise that the simple act of riding and
being with a horse can benefit able-bodied, wounded or injured veterans. McCracken
couldn’t agree more.
“An animal isn’t a threat,” he said. “It’s just neutral. It accepts you – it
meets you on neutral ground.”
The new program is a great opportunity for veterans who have
experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, brain injury, stroke,
amputation, as well as vision or hearing loss, says Marsh Kubitschek, UCP Heroes
Astrid Director.
“This program offers our veterans camaraderie, muscle building, stronger
focus, memory skills and well-being through riding lessons, horse knowledge, games
and exercises,” she added. “Our goal is to eventually have a
program run by veterans for veterans, with professional
support.
The new Heroes Astride
Program hosted an open house on
August 16th at the sprawling Blue
Fountain Farm. 17761 Grizzly Bear
Drive in Grass Valley. They will be
hosing more Family fun day’s soon.

Edward “John” Berryman (aka Sgt. Berryman) passed away Aug. 13, 2014,
in Grass Valley, Calif., with family at his side. He was 82.
Born May 11, 1932 in San Francisco to Edward Russell Berryman and
Amy Marguerite Berryman (nee Kelly), his family moved back to Grass Valley

from Grass Valley High School in 1950. Later, he graduated from Placer
College, was a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society and went on
to graduate from Sacramento State College in 1954.
John worked as an insurance inspector and private investigator most of his younger
years, married Dorothy B. Price in June of 1953, was drafted into active duty in the U.S. Army
3rd Armored Division (Spearhead) from 1955–1957 and in the reserves until honorably
discharged in 1963.
John was a sergeant on the Grass Valley Police Department from 1966–1979, married
Gail F. Nicholls in May of 1970, and then Josephine “Mikki” Petrea in Sept. of 1978.
He and his wife Mikki moved to Crescent City in 1991, where he lived for 21 years and was

Turn Out the Light, Come Out and Shut
the Door
Turn out the light, come out and shut the
door,
That scientific journal now can wait.
They cannot with precision calculate
The cosmic values that suggest the end
When that last star its energy shall spend
And all then sinks to chill and utter dark.
No formula can promise then one spark,
Yet still the ashes of our present world
Will speed in silence as it once was hurled.
Turn out the light, come out and shut the door.
It doesn’t matter what the pundits say,
Opinions they have changed since yesterday.
Who knows what Congress may decide to do;
Committees always fail to think things through.
With news reports assaulting ears and eyes,
Our jumbled mess can come as no surprise.
The scandals seem to sprout and grow like weeds,
It seems just everywhere the crook succeeds.
Turn out the light, come out and shut the door;
We just have time to go and start the car.
I’d like to walk, but it’s too late and far;
The study at the church starts in an hour.
Let’s sit, and pray, and let God’s blessing shower.
I need to hear what Jesus had to say
About those things that will not pass away,
About God’s purposes for you and me
And what will follow in eternity.
-Earl Leonard Langguth
BOOKS NOW AVAILABLE ON KINDLE
If you are getting E-books on Kindle as so many
people are now doing you need to be aware that Rev.
Earl’s book, Evolution: The True Story of a Life That
Changed, is now available for less than four dollars from
Kindle at Amazon.com. Some years ago Rev. Earl wrote
and published on XLibris the story of his
pilgrimage from a hostile atheism to Bible-based
ministry. The book is new on Kindle and is equipped with
text to speech if listening is more important to you than
reading the text. He says he is preparing a large book of
his poetry for possible Kindle publication later this year.
That work is entitled Sites, Sights, and
insights. His book, Illuminations, is currently available
from Tate Publishers on Amazon.com.
