EVERYTHING IS ALL RIGHT
“Danny’s Song” by Anne Murray
“And even though we ain’t got money
I’m so in love with you honey
Everything bring a chain of love.
And in the morning when I rise
Bring a tear of joy to my eyes
And tell me everything’s
gonna be all right.”
May I find new & unique ways
to view my world with new eyes and
limitless skies.

SOCIAL MEDIA IN EDUCATION
AllTop.com lists the pros & cons of using social media in education.
“In the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s latest Social Media
Adoption study, 100% of colleges & universities studied are using some form
of social media. Usage continues to rise for the most popular tools.”
“Social media is growing & not going anywhere. Many schools are now
embracing the move. By understanding this movement, schools can make
better choices on how to utilize social media in education.
“Facebook is used in 98% of colleges surveyed as opposed to 61% two
years ago. Colleges create mascot pages to encourage school spirit.
“Twitter is used by 84% of the colleges to send up-to-date announcements to students and for class announcements & discussions.
“47% of admissions professionals are now using LinkedIn.”

WAR NEUTRALITY
Time magazine, 14 August 1939: “In World War II, if it comes, some nations
may avoid fighting. But they will certainly not go untouched. Just as modern
warfare is no respecter of lives, soldier or civilian, so it is no respecter of the
pocketbooks of neutrals. To every neutral nation that has risen above the
level of primitive handicrafts, a world war is an economic explosion. As a
neutral such a nation enjoys the traditional lot of innocent bystander.”
* from Darry D — I can’t help that this premonition of a war gone by
might as well apply to the War on Terrorism and the coming conflagration in the Middle East.
PROM DRESSES FROM SLUTS-R-US
Remember your high school prom?
Remember formal gowns for the ladies & corsages & formal photos?
You might not want to view the collection of 10 “Slutty Prom Dresses”
posted by ChaCha.com which may reflect modern trends I’d rather not see.
MAGNA CARTA RESTORED
Huffington Post: “A 715-year-old copy of the Magna
Carta will soon return to public view at the National Archives after a conservation effort removed
old patches & repaired weak spots in the English
declaration of human rights that inspired U.S.
founding documents. The National Archives unveiled the medieval document Thursday in a specially humidified glass & metal case. It is the only original Magna Carta in the
U.S. A $13.5 million gift from David Rubenstein funded the conservation.
The U.S. copy was one of four reissued in 1297. It still carries the wax seal
of King Edward I of England, which is attached by a ribbon under the
document.”

hat a simple message provided in a profound
way. How often we forget that we have a most
powerful friend who is available 24/7 with mystically
magical powers far beyond those we possess or
ever can possess.
ometimes, when we’re downing in the deep allconsuming lakes of life, we need to recall that
long before we needed a life preserver, we had a
friend who died to save us from threatening seas.

FACEBOOK GRAFFITI WORTH $200M
Huffington Post: “In 2005, David Choe was
invited to paint murals on the walls of Facebook’s
first offices in Palo Alto, California, by Sean Parker,
then Facebook’s president. As pay, Parker offered
Choe a choice between cash in the ‘thousands of
dollars’ or stock then worth about the same
amount.
“Expressing brilliant foresight, Choe reportedly opted for stock options instead of payment in 2005 for covering the
walls of Facebook headquarters with spray-painted murals.
“Choe has since been homeless, ‘wandering the earth, making good art
& bad music.’ In fairness, Choe’s living situation may be more of a personal
choice than a financial one. (Choe’s work is a regular fixture at San Francisco’s Upper Playground & is displayed in major museums.)

FACEBOOK DEPRESSION IN TEENS
‘Lima Golf’ — CBS Boston, 28 Mar 2011: “Add ‘Facebook depression’ to potential harms linked with social media, an influential doctors’ group warns, referring to a condition it says may
affect troubled teens who obsess over the online site.
“Researchers disagree on whether it’s simply an extension of depression some kids feel in other circumstances, or a distinct condition linked
with using the online site.
“But there are unique aspects of Facebook that can make it a particularly tough social landscape to navigate for kids already dealing with poor
self-esteem.
“With in-your-face friends’ tallies, status updates & photos of happylooking people having great times, Facebook pages can make some kids feel
even worse if they think they don’t measure up.” Click to read more.
“The Pity Train has just derailed at the intersection of ‘Suck It
Up & Move On’, and crashed into ‘We All Have Problems’,
before coming to a complete stop at ‘Get the Heck Over It’.

EXABYTE SOCIAL CLOUDS
‘Linda Sunshine’ — AncestryInsider.com: “Josh Coates, in “Exabyte
Social Clouds & other Monstrosities” at RootTech 2012, discussed
social networking, exabytes of storage, & cloud computing.
“Coates illustrated the size of an exabyte:
U 1 gigabyte is equal to the human genome. The 3.2 billion base pairs would
take 9.5 years to read aloud.
U 1 terabyte is equal to 32,000 trees worth of paper (18" diameter trees).
U 1 petabyte is equal to a truck filled with one ton of paper. Then get
1,400,000 of them.
U 1 exabyte is equal to all trees in the US that are larger than 8" in diameter
being cut down & turned into paper. (That’s 30,000,000,000 trees.)
U 1 zettabyte is equal to all the grains of sand on every beach in the world,
7 times over, 1 grain representing 1 kilobyte.
“Cloud computing is a metaphor. Coates
compared the cloud to electric utility companies.
In the early days of the industrial revolution, manufacturing plants had their own power generators.
They had to generate their own power. That required tons of equipment, large costs, & wasted
capacity. With the development of power companies, factories could buy their electricity for a
fraction of what it cost to generate it themselves.
“That is what the cloud is like. We buy electric power from the cloud. Even computer servers can be marshaled from the
cloud. And the cost is pennies on the dollar of running your own data center.
A teenager can assemble a super computer in his room for a few hundred
bucks. Really.
“We live in a day when amazing things impossible just five years ago,
are possible today.
“In closing, Coates brought it all together in one question: ‘What would
you do with unlimited bandwidth, storage, & central processing units (CPU)?’
No other generation has had this question posed to them. It’s a pretty heavy
responsibility.”
“What are we going to do with this?”

NO FRILLS AIRLINES
Long before the current economic challenges forced airlines to go to “no
frills,” Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, and Tim Conway showed the future of
aviation in this 10 minute video.
TRUE COLORS
he Slovenian vocal group Perpetuum Jazzile’s outstanding rendition of the
love ballad “True Colors” lets me review my day in a way that creates a
smile on my lips, a glint in my eye, & a knowledge that the coming daze of
dreams will be pleasant.
eth Nielsen Chapman singing, “All I Have,” resonates before it’s too late
to turn off the computer & retire for the night.
eth Nielsen Chapman voice sings “Say Goodnight Not Goodbye” as I
make time to find the kind of sounds to surround my evening’s ending.
As I reach out to turn off the systems that have brought me so much joy
today in ways that I could not have imagined this morning, I smile for awhile
at the peace that is mine.
