Chairman’s Comments
Chamber Board of Directors
Growing Talent,
Leading Innovation. As I begin
my final weeks as
Chairman, I have
begun reflecting
on the past year.
When I chose
Growing Talent,
Leading Innovation as my theme
for the year, I had
in mind a strong
vision for the
future and a strong focus on growing from
within. With those goals in mind, I couldn’t be
more proud of the work we’ve been able to
achieve together.
The Leader In Me is an effort I have had the
pleasure to be a part of since its inception in
2011. This year two of our schools achieved
the self-sustaining Lighthouse Status, making
us national leaders. Currently, there are 101
Lighthouse schools worldwide, and we are
honored to have the first 2 in Kentucky – Briarwood Elementary and Natcher Elementary.
I have also had the pleasure of seeing our
community celebrate the completion of our
$1.4 million fundraising campaign to put The
Leader In Me in every public school, K-12, in
Bowling Green and Warren County. I would
be remiss if I didn’t take this moment to reflect on just how important that milestone is
to our children and to the future of our economy. I want to thank each and every one of
you for your commitment to this initiative. I
also want to thank our campaign co-chairs
Ann Puckett and Rick Wilson for their leadership.
year, we’ve announced over $202 million in
investment and the creation of over 400 new
jobs. Those are simply staggering numbers!
In fact, included in those numbers is the announcement of the Constellium-UACJ BodyIn-White Plant, the single largest announcement in South Central Kentucky in a decade.
And we’re not finished yet!
On top of outstanding achievements in economic development, our Chamber has been
busy as well. In fact, this summer, the Chamber
was named as a finalist for the 2014 Chamber
of the Year. That means we were 1 of 5 of the
top Chambers in the nation for 2014! As you’ll
read later in this newsletter, our Chamber has
again been awarded 5 Star Accreditation by
the US Chamber. Fewer than 1% of all Chambers receive this accreditation, which again
recognizes our Chamber as being among the
best of the best. I am very proud to be Chairman of such a high performing Chamber! And
the work hasn’t stopped there. As part of ongoing retention efforts, we were able to visit
with each and every one of our partners this
year one on one to make sure they’re getting
the most out of their Chamber partnership. In
addition, I’m pleased to report that we have
added 164 partners to the Chamber family
this year.
But don’t take my word for it! From the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives to
the International Economic Development
Council, we have been honored with several
awards in 2014. From membership retention
to outstanding programs like The Leader in
Me, I am proud to say that this Chamber is top
to bottom a first class, high performing engine that I am proud to be a part of.
While we’re working on our young workforce, we’ve also been working on growing
the economy in South Central Kentucky. This

Bowling Green Receives
International Economic

for Downtown Redevelopment Efforts
ect and so excited that our hard work has been honored on the international stage.”
“Bowling Green and Warren County experience success because of the partnership
we enjoy,” said Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson. “Bowling Green continues to
grow and prosper thanks to a shared focus on the future. The downtown redevelopment project is just one example of the success we can and have achieved when we
collaborate toward a common goal. I am very proud to be honored by the IEDC for
our work.”
The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce recently accepted a Bronze Excellence
in Economic Development Award on behalf of Bowling Green and Warren County in
the category of Multi-Year Economic from the International Economic Development
Council (IEDC) for their work on the downtown redevelopment project, underway
since 2008.
The honor was presented at an awards ceremony on Monday, October 20, during the
IEDC Annual Conference, which was held October 19-22, in Fort Worth, Texas. Chamber President and CEO Ron Bunch and Warren County Judge Executive Mike Buchanon were on hand to receive the award.
“Economic development efforts have long been a keystone in the quest to bolster
the economy and improve quality of life in every locality across the country,” said Bill
Sproull, IEDC chair. “As the nation continues to tackle challenges in the midst of global uncertainty, these efforts have taken on an even greater significance. With this
award, we laud trendsetting locations like Bowling Green for leading the charge.”
According to Warren County Judge Executive Mike Buchanon, “Downtown redevelopment is one of the things I am most proud of since I’ve been Judge Executive. Thanks
to the efforts and cooperation of several state and local entities, downtown Bowling
Green is now a thriving entertainment, cultural, and business destination. Through
a lot of hard work and determination, there is simply no better place than Bowling
Green to raise a family and have a career. I couldn’t be more proud of this international recognition. ”
The Bowling Green TIF project began in 2008 and over the past six years over 200
million dollars has been invested. The project has paved the way for new jobs, a minor league baseball park, a performing arts center, a new city park, and revitalized a
space where our citizens now want to live, work, and play.
Warren County Downtown Economic Development Authority Chairman Doug Gorman said, “The downtown redevelopment project has truly been a labor of love for
all involved. We had a vision to transform our downtown into a destination where
people want to come to live, work, and play, and we committed to making it happen.
It took a lot of hard work and the cooperation of several different entities, but today
we have a bustling downtown that is growing every day. I am very proud of this proj-

Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Receives
National 5 Star Rating from the US Chamber
· Outstanding Member Growth for 2013;
· Outstanding Special Event for our FranklinCovey/The Leader In Me Dinner; and
· Outstanding Publication for our “Business Grows Here” brochure.
®
In November, the United States Chamber of Commerce announced that the Bowling
Green Area Chamber of Commerce has been reaccredited as a 5-Star Chamber. The
accreditation process is a comprehensive examination of every aspect of a Chamber’s
operations, including governance, finance, human resources, government affairs,
program development, technology, communications, facilities, and benchmarking.
According to the US Chamber of Commerce, only 1% of the Chambers of Commerce in
the United States actually achieve the highest level of accreditation, 5 Star Accreditation. The Bowling Green Area Chamber maintains a high standard of excellence, and
is proud to have achieved accreditation without a lapse since 1973. “The reaccreditation process is rigorous. Every 5 years, the US Chamber looks through
our operations from top to bottom. From government relations to HR to economic
development, they leave no stone unturned. I am distinctly proud of the Chamber
of Commerce team for their dedication and hard work. They are truly a high performance team, “ said Tonya Matthews, Vice President of Partnership Services.
The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce maintains a strong focus on the
needs of our partners and the growth of our community. We work in collaboration
with our local leadership on a regular basis to ensure our partners have a community
with a strong local economy and vibrant quality of life where their businesses can
grow and prosper. We are delighted to be recognized by the US Chamber for our efforts to serve our community as the best Chamber we can possibly be,” said Chamber
CEO Ron Bunch.
“I am so proud of the work of our Chamber of Commerce. From economic development to partnership services, our Chamber strives every day to provide the highest
level of services to our partners and our community. I am delighted to see that the US
Chamber continues to recognize the high quality and professionalism of our Bowling
Green Area Chamber of Commerce with 5 star accreditation.” stated John Mark Fones,
Chairman of the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
This announcement comes on the heels of a banner year for the Bowling Green Area
Chamber of Commerce, with several national awards and rankings.
2014 Chamber of the Year Finalist
Earlier this year, The Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce, 2009 Chamber of
the Year, was named one of five finalists nationwide for the American Chamber of
Commerce Executive’s (ACCE) 2014 Chamber of the Year.
Chamber of the Year is the nation’s only award recognizing the dual role chambers
have in leading businesses and communities.
KCCE Awards
In April of this year, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce was honored with
four Excellence Awards by the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives. Awards
included:
IEDC Awards
In October, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce was the recipient of 2
Bronze Excellence in Economic Development Awards from the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). Awards included:
· Excellence in Economic Development, Human Capital for our work with The
Leader In Me; and
· Excellence in Economic Development, Multi-Year Economic Development on
behalf of Bowling Green for their work on the Downtown TIF project.
Site Selection & Southern Business & Development Recognitions
Earlier this year, the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce was honored with
two notable rankings by economic development entities that showcase their success
in relation to similar communities across the entire U.S.
Among metropolitan areas with populations less than 200,000, the city of Bowling
Green ranked 6th on Site Selection’s Top 10 Metro Areas for New and Expanded Facilities in 2013.
As a further salute to the Chamber’s success, Bowling Green was also featured in
Southern Business & Development’s “Ten More Shining Examples of Economic Development that’s working in the South” list in the Winter 2014 edition released at the
end of February.
Top Announcements in Kentucky
In a nod to the Chamber’s outstanding economic development success, The Lane
Report announced in August that Bowling Green and Warren County are attracting
the top investments in the state. The article featured a ranked list of economic development announcements in the Commonwealth from June 1, 2013 to May 31, 2014.
German-based Bilstein North America claimed the top spot as the largest capital
investment by a new firm in the Commonwealth for the year 2013 and the third largest overall. Bilstein invested $120 million in their production plant and U.S. headquarters that will be located in the award-winning Kentucky Transpark. Prior to the
announcement of the Constellium-UACJ Body in White Plant in July 2014, Bilstein
was the largest announcement for the South Central Kentucky region in more than
a decade.
“I’d like to congratulate the Bowling Green Area Chamber on their 5 Star reaccreditation and numerous awards over the past year. We are truly fortunate for the leadership and support in Bowling Green and Warren County that continues to propel our
community forward. It’s the hard work of a number of individuals and organizations
that make such impressive accolades and economic growth possible, and it’s an honor to be a part of it,” said Warren County Judge Executive Mike Buchanon.
According to Bowling Green Mayor Bruce Wilkerson, “We are fortunate to have a
Chamber of Commerce here in Bowling Green that operates at the highest level of
performance in their industry. I’d like to congratulate the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce on their 5 Star reaccreditation from the US Chamber. I look forward
to working with them as we continue to grow this outstanding community.”
