Performance Characteristics of Webbing
Nylon
Polyester
Used mainly where acid conditions are present or a minimum
stretch is desired, polyester is unaffected by common acids
and hot bleaching agents. It is not suitable for use with concentrated sulfuric acids, alkalis or at temperatures in excess
of 194 degrees F (90º C). Stretch at rated capacity is approximately 3% (untreated).

Acid
The most widely used general purpose synthetic web sling, is
unaffected by grease and oil. It has good chemical resistance
to aldehydes, ethers, and strong alkalis; but is not suitable
for use with acids and bleaching agents or at temperatures in
excess of 194 degrees F (90º C). Stretch at rated capacity is
approximately 8-10%.

When you lift a load with a leg or legs of a sling at an angle, you can calculate the load per leg
and the slings rated capacity by using the following formula example:
1) Total Load is 1,000 lbs., divided by 2 legs = 500 lbs. (load per leg)
2) Suppose sling angle is 60º
3) Multiply 500 lbs. x 1.154 (load factor from table) = 577 lbs. (actual load per leg)
You will need a sling rated at 1,154 lbs. in basket capacity to safely lift this 1,000 lb. load.
Inspection Frequency
Three important factors need to be
reviewed to determine your sling
inspection frequency:
• Sling Usage: The more frequently sling is used, the more often it
requires inspection.
•Use Environment: The harsher
the working environment the sling is used in, the more often it
requires inspection.
• Sling Service Life: Base your
conclusions on your previous
experience in using slings.
The individual handling your slings
should visually inspect all slings before each lift. Additional inspections
should be made at least once a year
by a qualified individual, and permanent records should be kept.
OSHA mandates that “Each day before being used, the sling and all
fastenings and attachment shall be
inspected for damage or defects by
a competent person designated by
the employer. Additional inspections
shall be performed during sling use,
where service conditions warrant.”
Replacement Guidelines
If you see damage such as the following listed below, remove slings (including round
slings) immediately from service. Return them to service only when approved by a
qualified individual. Following are the removal criteria established by ANSI B30.9:
1. Acid or caustic burns.
2. Melting or charring of any part of the sling.
3. Holes, tears, cuts or snags.
4. Broken or worn stitching in load-bearing splices.
5. Excessive abrasive wear.
6. Knots in any part of the sling.
7. Excessive pitting or corrosion, or cracked, distorted or broken fittings.
8. Signs of Ultraviolet (UV) light degradation.
9. Other visible damage that causes doubt as to the strength of the sling.
In addition, Safeway Sling USA recommends four other important reasons to remove
slings from service:
1. If you see our Red Core warning yarns.
2. Distortion of the sling.
3. The sling has an identification tag that is in any way unreadable.
4. Anytime a sling is loaded beyond its rated capacity, for any reason.
While these standards are quite specific regarding reasons for removal, others require
your good judgement and common sense. Critical areas to watch are wear to the body
of the sling, the selvage edge of the webbing, and the condition of the eyes.

Warning: Horizontal sling angles

Do not exceed rated capacity.
SAF/GRIP Wear Pads
While slings shown above are covered by wear pad, they are optional at extra cost
on all other slings to protect from severe wear situations.
Cordura nylon, heavy sling web and leather are most commonly used.
Contact us for your special needs.
1. REGULAR pads are an extra layer sewn to webbing at wear points on either or both sides of the sling body or eyes. Multiple layers are available on request.
2. EDGEGUARD pads are sewn along edges of the sling body wherever protection
is desired.
3. SLEEVE or Tube pads protect both sides and may be shifted along the sling.
This type offers the advantage of remaining stationary as the sling stretches
while the load is being lifted. Quick sleeves using velcro closures also available.
Coatings
All Safeway Slings are given an abrasive resistant
latex treatment at the mill.
A Super Latex coating is available at an additional
cost. This greatly increases abrasion resistance.
Contact the factory for further specifications.

Saf/Grip
Round Slings
Saf/Grip Round Slings
The Saf/Grip Round Sling is a major advancement in pulling and overhead lifting. It is fabricated using red striped, white
polyester load bearing yarns encased in a flexible polyester fabric.
Why use a Round Sling?
Use Care:
• Seamless tubular construction has no stitched edge
to get snagged or ruptured.
Below are conditions to be avoided when using Saf/Grip
Round Slings:
• Color coding, in accordance with international stan-
dards, gives most frequently used capacities a unique
color.
• Do not expose Saf/Grip Round Slings to strong alkalis
at elevated temperatures, and never use at tempera-
tures above 194ºF (90ºC) or below -40ºF (-40ºC).
• As with web slings, red striped, white core yarns offer
an additional warning to aid in inspection.
• Avoid sling contact with any kind of sharp surfaces.
• Round Slings are soft. Pliable body will hug many un-
even and odd-shaped loads. Grips tightly and is easy
to unhitch. Choker hitch will not lock up on the load.
• 100% polyester construction stretches approximately
3% at its rated capacity and will return to its original
length.
• Load bearing yarns are protected from ultraviolet
degradation.
• Cost effective in high capacity lifting or pulling applications.
• Do not overload any sling beyond its rated capacity.
Inspect Your Slings Regularly:
Before each lift, you should visually inspect your Saf/
Grip Round Sling for any damage. Immediately remove
sling from service if you see:
• Missing or illegible identification tag.
• Melting, charring or weld spatter on any part of the
sling.
• Holes, tears, cuts, embedded particles, abrasive
wear or snags that expose the sling’s core yarns.
• Broken or worn stitching in the cover that exposes
the core yarns.
• Fittings that are damaged, stretched, cracked, pitted
or distorted in any way.
• Knotting in the sling.
• Acid or alkali burns.
• Other visible damage that causes doubt as to the
sling’s strength.
Saf/Grip Round Slings are
Available in Three Configurations:
• Endless - The most versatile sling rotates wear points.
• Eye and Eye - Formed by enclosing the body of sling in a tubular jacket.
• Multi-Leg Bridles.
Movable wear pads of polyester or leather are available
to help protect against hooks and corners of loads.
14
Saf/Grip Round Slings
The Saf/Grip Endless Round Sling is the most versatile.
Capable of being used in vertical, choker and basket
hitches, wear points can be shifted to extend sling life.
Pliable body hugs the load and offers super strength and
ease of handling. Slings feature identification tags indicating size, type and rated capacity.
