Message from the President - Glass Odyssey Corvette Club
GOCC is Celebrating its 42nd Year - 1972 to 2014!

Message from the President
Wow – the last couple of weeks have
been exhausting all leading up to the
GOCC Corvette Summer Car Show,
our largest event of the year. I am
very humbled by all of the effort put
forth by so many people to make this
a success. Each of you stepped up to
do whatever was needed, but I want
to especially thank the car show
steering committee – Michele
Roberts, Caeleigh Villareal, Rich
Culley, Larry Ficca, the Whitlock’s,
the Paulbitski’s, Kathy Shafer, and
all of you who put your Corvettes in
the show and/or stepped up to help
with the many tasks at hand. Our
event sponsors – Grey Chevrolet and
Wells Fargo Investments (Bob &
Pam Battin) - a big thank you goes
out to you. This event would not
have been possible without your
support.
Great weather, lots of
Corvettes and music by Born to be
Wild really made that day special.
Remember that our meeting next
month is on July 3rd at our house.
Directions to our house are contained
in this newsletter and at our website.
We will have a BBQ at 6:00 pm
followed by a short meeting at 7:00
pm. Anyone wanting to watch the
Poulsbo fireworks from our shoreline
are welcome to stay for that. Usually
they begin after 10:00 pm. Bring
lawn chairs and a jacket because it
can get cool when the sun goes down.
And all Corvettes get to park on the
shoreline facing Poulsbo. This has
been a big attraction in past years for
the neighbors and boaters heading
into Liberty Bay for the fireworks
show. Hot dogs and hamburgers will
be provided by GOCC. Just bring a
salad or dessert to share.
I attended the NWACC meeting on
June 22nd – here are a couple of
highlights. Someone stole the trailer
containing most of the equipment
used for autocrosses the night before
the last autocross. A mad scramble
spearheaded by George Schwatz and
Dave Kaiser enabled the autocross to
go on as scheduled.
We also
discussed NWACC offices up for
election this year and D&O insurance
for individual member clubs. I will
provide a detailed summary at the
July 3rd meeting.
On a sad note, the E-Board has
accepted the resignation of Donovan
Gregory as Vice President of GOCC.
Per our Bylaws, a replacement needs
to be elected at the next general
meeting. Interested in serving as the
VP? Just give me a call or be
nominated during the meeting.
Thanks
for
your
continued
involvement and support of GOCC.
Remember that dues were due on
April 1st, so if you have not sent
yours in, please do it today. In
accordance with our constitution and
bylaws, membership rights must be
suspended after July 1st if dues for
the current year have not been paid.
Hope to see you on July 3rd.

The Seattle Marque Club, the Tacoma Corvette, and
Classical Glass Clubs joined us at the Bucks A & W Port
Orchard on May 31, 2014 and we drove together to the
Retsil Veterans Home. Debbie C. from the GOCC
brought Piper, a therapy dog to the activity, too. Piper
is an Alaskan Husky and was a sled dog in Alaska.

ignore your check engine lamp if it's on." Here is a
great article on check engine lamps.

When a dashboard light suddenly appears, it could
indicate a problem that could cost anywhere from 11
cents to $11K to fix. Either way, it's best not to ignore it.

Corvette of the Month: '67 L88
performance. Chevrolet sold just 20 L88 Corvettes in 1967,
80 in 1968 and 116 in 1969. All have obtained legendary
status, especially the 1967 models, which are considered by
many the zenith of mid-year Corvette production.
Corvette Bucket List, Part 8
Documented with the original factory tank sticker and
Bloomington Gold literature and paperwork, this rare and
remarkable L88 Coupe is the ultimate version of the classic
th
second-generation Sting Ray. High Bid on June 14 at
Mecum's Seattle auction was $3.75 million, but it did not
meet the reserve and was not sold.
The tank sticker documenting this 1967 Corvette L88 Coupe
shows that it was originally ordered for production on
February 16, 1967 and scheduled for production on April 7.
Ordered with code 976 Marina Blue paint with Black Stinger
and standard Black vinyl interior, it was completed with a
Muncie close ratio M22 “Rock Crusher” 4-speed, J56 heavy
duty brakes and J50 power brakes, F41 special suspension,
K66 transistor ignition, G81 Positraction with 4.11 gearset,
N14 dual side exhaust and AO1 Soft Ray tinted glass. It was
delivered to its first owner by Bast Chevrolet of Seaforth,
New York, who installed a roll bar and shoulder harness.
After being raced for a time it was sold to a lady in Canada
before eventually being repatriated to the U.S. by its third
owner. It was cosmetically restored in the early 1980s and
subsequently earned Bloomington Gold Certification in 1985
with a score of 95.9 points. It returned to Bloomington in
1988 for the “Earthquake 88” L88 Special Collection and
again as part of the Bloomington Special Collection in 1992.
In 1998 the body was removed from the car for the first time
as part of a complete restoration by Naber’s Motors Corvette
Restorations in Houston, Texas. Upon completing the
project, the car was sent directly to the Bloomington Gold
meet where it was once again displayed in that year’s “L88
Invasion” Special Collection.
First offered in 1967, Corvettes ordered with the L88 engine
were delivered with racing suspension and brakes and
without power steering or air conditioning; even the heater
and radio were deleted. L88s were delivered without fan
shrouds and were notorious for overheating in traffic. They
did not have chokes, and were almost impossible to keep
idling until they came up to operating temperature. One
feature not seen in other Corvettes, however, was a label
affixed to the center console that ominously stated in bright
Red print, "Warning: Vehicle must operate on a fuel having a
minimum of 103 research octane and 95 motor octane or
serious engine damage may result.”
L88 Corvettes famously won the GT class at Sebring and
Daytona and ruled SCCA competition, all while Chevrolet did
its best to keep the car out of the hands of the public; it
appears that only Hot Rod Magazine (April1969) and Car Life
(July 1969) ever published a road test on a factory-supplied
L88, and strangely in both cases the test car was equipped
with a 3-speed automatic that seriously hampered its
Many of us over the years have come to the conclusion that
we should experience some of the good things in life before
we kick the bucket. Most likely that is why we own one or
more Corvettes. This is the eighth and last installment in
which we list events and venues where we are sure to see
Corvettes and their owners in their natural habitat.
Mid-America Motorworks Corvette Funfest
In 1994 Mike Yager and the team at Mid America
Motorworks - then called Mid America Designs - staged a
relaxed Corvette show to thank their customers and share
the Corvette hobby. An enthusiastic crowd of 1,200 people
brought 350 assorted Corvettes to Mid America Motorworks'
corporate campus to celebrate. Yager was thrilled with the
response to the first-time event!
By 2006, more than 14,000 Corvettes filled every available
space on the grounds at Mid America Motorworks. This
casual show has become the Largest Corvette Party in the
World, welcoming enthusiasts from across the country and
across the globe.
Over the years, a number of noteworthy Corvette celebrities
have attended the ever-growing event, including Zora ArkusDuntov, the first Chief Engineer of Corvette, Larry Shinoda,
designer of the 1963 Corvette Split Window, Wil Cooksey,
Manager of the Bowling Green Corvette Plant, David
McLellan, the Chief Engineer of the C4 Corvette, and Dave
Hill, the Chief Engineer of the C5 and C6 Corvettes.
According to Mike Yager, "It has been especially gratifying
for us to be able to host Funfest on our campus and be able
to meet our customers face-to-face. Our customers actually
named it ‘Funfest’ in many of the cards and letters we
received after the first event. We continue to give away Tshirts, posters and pins to each registrant attending Funfest
— a tradition that began years ago. Once you attend
Funfest, you usually make a point of attending every year."
Today Funfest continues to grow with 15,000 Corvettes and
45,000 attendees flooding the grounds. The 2014 event
starts on September 18th and Celebrates "Vets with
Vettes".

Corvette Racing
Corvette Racing came in second in the GTE Pro
class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 14-15. The
new Chevrolet Corvette C7.R is a podium finisher in
its debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Antonio Garcia,
Jan Magnussen and Jordan Taylor were runners- up
in the GTE Pro class in Corvette Racing's No. 73
Corvette C7.R thanks to late-race heroics by the trio.
Despite losing valuable laps due to safety car
nuances and a faulty valve stem for the Corvette's air
jack system, the No. 73 Corvette and its drivers
completed 338 laps and finished a lap shy of the
team's first victory at the French endurance classic
since 2011. The runner-up Corvette traveled 2,862.52
miles in the event.
The next GTLM round of the TUDOR United Sports
car Championship takes place at Watkins Glen on
June 29. The event will air live at 11 a.m. ET on FOX
Sports 1.

Pink Corvettes
On 14 June members met behind Olive Garden in
Silverdale and cruised to the CENCOM facility at 911
Carver Street in Bremerton. Very interesting tour. Did
you know that routing all 911 calls in this area go thru
CENCOM, even "the cat in the tree" calls? And they
do it with about 6 people and a very sophisticated
computer system. After the tour, members cruised to
the Green Light Diner in Poulsbo for dinner. Good
food and service.
Angelyne, the curvaceous LA icon known for putting up
her own billboards with catchy phrases like “Barbie
Wishes She Were Me”, was recently spotted driving
around town in her pink Corvette.

Vehicles: 33 model-year 2014 Corvettes
The Problem: An internal short circuit in the
sensing and diagnostic module could disable
the frontal airbags, seat belt pretensioners and
Automatic Occupancy Sensing module. GM said
it is unaware of any crashes or injuries related to
the condition. The Fix: GM will notify the 33
owners, and dealers will replace the sensing
and diagnostic module for free.
General Motors is also recalling 712 2014
Chevrolet Corvette Stingray cars equipped with
optional Competition Sport seats to replace the
passenger-seat airbag.
