FROM THE PRINCIPAL…
I am not a punter. However, when the nation stopped to watch that horse race last week, I had a “flutter” and watched the
telecast. I am delighted I did … even though I didn’t back the winner. I know that every woman across our nation felt
victorious. In fact, I have not stopped smiling when I recall that beautiful image of the 2015 Melbourne Cup winning jockey,
Michelle Payne, embracing her brother, strapper Stevie Payne.
Not only did Michelle take out this most coveted trophy; she rode triumphantly into the history books, declaring loudly and
proudly "... women can do anything and we can beat the world". Michelle has every right to be proud; she has overcome an
array of obstacles, any one of which would cause most of us to give up. She is a shining beacon in a male-dominated sport, a
woman who truly inspires. Her determination, dedication, courage, belief in self and love of family makes her a powerful and
positive role model.
I cannot help but reflect upon our VCE students who are sitting their exams as I write this reflection. My prayer for them is
that they, too, “never give up” and believe in themselves, remaining determined to achieve their dreams.
Thank you, Michelle: you truly are a winner.
On Sunday, 8 November, a beautiful inaugural Mass of Remembrance was held in the Star chapel. The chapel was filled with
members of the extended Star family, our students sang beautifully and the names of deceased relatives were read. It was a
very special gathering: see page 3 for a report and photos. Following the Mass, those in attendance enjoyed morning tea and
a tour of Trasna, led by our wonderful Year 7 guides. Thank you to Kris Johnstone and the Past Students’ Association, Anne
Muirhead, Judy Ryan, Mary Harmes, Jennifer Levett, Meredith Talia, Gabi Molan, Amelia McCulloch, Jessica Zuk, the Year 8
and 9 singers, the Year 7 guides and the many other staff who supported this event.
Our 2015 Presentation Night takes place on Monday, 16 November at Hamer Hall. This event is a highlight on the Star
calendar. It is an opportunity to showcase the school year in a vibrant and engaging manner. Presentation Night is a
compulsory College event: all students are expected to attend in full school uniform. I look forward to sharing an overview of
our year with you.
This prayer from Sunday’s Mass of Remembrance captures the prayer of our hearts and world in the wake of Remembrance
Day on Wednesday, 11 November:
Let us pray for peace - peace in our own lives, in our families and local communities, in the many places in our world where
intolerance and misunderstanding cause hatred and violence.
May we become instruments of peace, faith, hope and love in our broken world. Amen.

UPDATE ON ARRANGEMENTS WITH ST JAMES PARISH …
As you are aware, Star of the Sea made the College chapel available to the Parish Priest and the parishioners of St James for
their use following the catastrophic fire that destroyed the church earlier this year.
On 14 October, Sr Maria Lazzaro, Congregational Head of the Presentation Sisters (Victoria) , Kevin Velthuis, the College
Business Manager and Sandra Diafas met with Fr Michel Corriveau, Parish Priest of St James. The purpose of the meeting was
to discuss the arrangements between St James Parish and Star regarding the former’s use of the College chapel.
Fr Michel informed the meeting that he had planned to erect a temporary church on the tennis courts and that St James
would vacate the College chapel before Christmas 2015.

fabulous effort for the youngest-ever female competitor in this Championship.
Friday Night Tutoring attracts dedicated Star students…
 Rachael Beaumont (Year 12) attended Friday Night Tutoring in the middle of her Year 12 exams. She
tutors “Hannah” regularly and didn't want to let her down during Hannah's end-of-year
assessments. Rachael has tutored regularly for three years.
 Georgia Elston, Clare Cooper, Kiara Arizstelatto Pledger and Gabrielle Matterson (Year 10), who had been
involved in Drama Festival throughout Thursday (and weeks prior) and had competed for their house in the

INAUGURAL MASS OF REMEMBRANCE ON SUNDAY, 8 NOVEMBER
A glorious Spring morning set the scene perfectly for the inaugural Mass of Remembrance in the College chapel on
Sunday, 8 November. Co-hosted by the Past Students’ Association and the College, the Mass was followed by
morning tea in the George Reed foyer. The event was very well attended by past and current families, and staff
members.
The Mass featured delightful singing by Year 8 & 9 students, accompanied by Meredith Talia. A particular highlight
was the stunning performance by soloist, Year 11 student, Jessica Zuk, at the conclusion of the Mass: Jessica sang
Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem. Past students, current staff members and Maria Lazzaro pbvm,
Congregational Head of the Presentation Sisters in Victoria, also participated in the liturgy. A special inclusion was
the reading out of names of deceased family members who had been part of the Star community, as requested by
their families or friends.
After Mass, the congregation processed from the chapel through the Garden of Reflection where members of the
Cheng family laid a floral tribute. The mood was reflective and peaceful.
Many families expressed their gratitude for the commemorative Mass: it was a wonderful opportunity to recognise
our loss in such a familiar and supportive place - Mum loved Star.
One family reflected … being in the Star chapel with the students in their uniforms, singing the College hymn, was
so moving – we felt very close to our daughter.

HOUSE DRAMA FESTIVAL
Congratulations to all students who performed so spectacularly at the 2015 House Drama Festival on Thursday, 29
October. The House Drama Festival is a fine example of a wonderful student-directed activity where ownership,
creativity and supported risk-taking are all encouraged.
The Festival is open to any interested students in Years 8, 9 and 10. The Year 10 Drama Captains are responsible for
the script writing, auditioning, direction and production tasks associated with their piece. Each house is given a
theme to interpret in its own innovative way. The theme this year was ‘Fractured Shakespeare’. Each house was
given an original Shakespeare text to reimagine and recontextualise.
The 2015 House Drama Captains and their play titles:
Ave Victoria Mikos & Georgie Bianco … The Red Kitchen (based on Macbeth)
Fay Rubina Smith & Kiara Arizstelatto Pledger … What you Will (based on Twelfth Night)
Nagle Alexandra O’Donnell & Karina Vasudevan … Price of Fame (based on Timon of Athens)
Stella Mia Geraerts & Greta White … Medium Somno (based on A Midsummers’ Night’s Dream)
The House Drama Captains and all the performers are to be congratulated on presenting four wonderfully diverse
pieces. Deputy Principal, Kathy Smith, announced Stella House winners on the night with their performance of
Medium Somno.
We look forward to House Drama Festival 2016 as Stella House defends its title.

STAR PE WEEK … 26 - 30 OCTOBER
STARFIT GET FIT was the theme for days of lunchtime activity during PE Week.
As a Faculty and all school staff, we encourage the students to take every opportunity to be active during class time
and their own leisure time. This continued with the activities provided at lunchtime and during their PE classes.
The Year 11 VCE PE Unit 2 class, the newly-appointed house leaders, the sports leadership team and all the PE staff
assisted with the organisation in their year level or core class homerooms to field teams and encourage
participation in the fun activities at lunchtime.
Students had the opportunity to participate in the boxing and boot camp training sessions before school, PE class
Beep Test relay, Year 8 PE class basketball, STARFIT lunchtime fitness activities, Zumba class, skipping, Big Sister
Little Sister dodge ball, Pink Netball round robin for Year 10 PE classes, staff walking group, healthy breakfast and
the house triathlon.
Congratulations to all the students who actively participated in the daily activities: their enthusiasm, interest and
effort was greatly appreciated. At lunchtime, it takes an inner strength to move away from your friends and get
involved.
