Charlotte is the center of the nation’s fifth largest urban region. This is startling considering that
Charlotte, a mid-sized city with a population of 680,828, is the largest city within the region.
The Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) is comprised of several
counties in North Carolina, and York County in South Carolina. This area has a population of
over 1.9 million and during the last ten years has grown by over 35%. Within a 100 mile radius,
Charlotte’s population of 6.3 million exceeds Atlanta’s 6.2 million. The area’s prosperity is reflected by an effective buying income of $18.9 billion in retail sales (fiscal year 2012) with a median
income of $49,552.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg region is the only major distribution center midway between the
Northeast, Midwest and Florida markets. Over half of the U.S. population can be reached from
Charlotte within two hours by air or one day by truck.
Charlotte is served by an excellent state and federal highway network system. I-77 runs north and
south, I-85 runs northeast to southwest, with I-485 as its fast outer belt (completed 2014), and
I-40, is located 25 minutes north of the city. Several major airlines serve the Charlotte-Douglas
International Airport, providing non-stop and direct daily flights to nearly 160 domestic cities.
International travelers appreciate the convenience of non-stop flights to Frankfurt, London, and
Beijing. Each year, 11 million passengers board planes at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport,
ranking it the 24th most active air transportation hub in the nation.
Charlotte is first and foremost a banking city. With $2 Trillion in assets, it is the second largest
financial center in the nation, behind only New York. One of the nation’s largest banks, Bank of
America is headquartered here. Wells Fargo will also continue to have a very large presence. In
total, 20 banks with more than 197 local branches are located in Charlotte. Our banks provide a
wealth of services to commercial and individual customers and are leaders in the service industry.
Charlotte serves as the subsidiary headquarters for many national and international companies.
