President’s Message
As I look at what we have
accomplished this year, I feel
very fortunate to be a part of
this organization. Most of all, I
am very proud to be representing South Florida SGNA, Region
16. We have a dynamic region
full of enthusiasm and expertise.
Region 16 along with the other 5
Florida regions are excited about
bringing you “Illuminating the
Future of Endoscopy” being held
September 16 –18 at The Peabody Orlando. Our region is
responsible for the program this
year. This conference promises
to bring you and update you in
what is new and exciting in Endoscopy 2011. We are also very
excited about our website:
www.sgnaflorida.org. When
you visit the site, you will be
able to do the online registration
for the state conference and you
will find links to the National
SGNA for valuable information
like position statements, educational resources and legislative
issues affecting nursing today,
just to name a few. Region 16 is
also proud to award three
scholarships to members to
attend the state meeting.
Every year during the National Meeting, the theme for
the year is revealed and the
year’s national theme is about
developing the leader in you. I
would like to invite you to get
involved and show your commitment to your specialty.
Attend one of the Board of
Directors meeting that is held
the second Tuesday of every
month at Memorial Regional
Hospital in Hollywood. Just
email one of the board members, if you are interested in
attending (email information on
page 4). I have been on the
board for more than 10 years.
I have met great people, have
seen great places and have
expanded my knowledge in my
specialty and I can only wish
the same for you.
Sincerely,
Teresita Foliacci, BSN, RN,

Feature Story: Olympus University Training Course a Grand Success
Many thanks to the Memorial Hospital West Endoscopy team for initiating and promoting the recent collaboration with our
Olympus Endoscopy Specialists. On May 26th a Reprocessing Training course was held at the Renaissance Hotel in Ft
Lauderdale Florida. Among those in attendance where nurses and GI Techs from the Virgin Islands, Atlanta, Jacksonville and
Tampa just to name a few. South Florida Region 16 attendees included Holy Cross, Broward General and the entire Endoscopy team from MHW Magnet Hospital. The learning objectives included review of endoscope construction, reprocessing
standards and resources, reprocessing order as supported by the SGNA, proper handling and storage, common reprcessing
errors, repair reduction and prevention of cross-contamination in endoscope processing. The interactive jeopardy style of
audience participation was fantastic. There was plenty of question and answer time as well as break out stations for reprocessing. I must say there was a wealth of new information that was learned in each category as well as networking with
other hospital attendees.
Olympus Endoscopy Training Specialists included representation from every region in Florida as well as Randell Orner the Senior
Manager of Endoscopy Support Services. Thanks to our very own James Fiorito you taught us so much! We are very fortunate to
have a company like Olympus that encourages and supports its customers with knowledgeable specialists, and training courses.
Please let your managers know about the New Flexible Endoscope Reprocessor (CFER) Exam. The exam is administered by the
Certification Board for Sterile Processing & Distribution, Inc- an independent certification board formed to plan, develop, administer and evaluate a program on an international level. The mission is to promote and encourage high standards of ethical
and professional practice through a recognized, credible credentialing program. Through the support of Olympus this certification was made possible. Be on the look out as our digest will provide more detailed information on this very important certification .
