1.0 LED BASICS
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits light on certain wavelength (colour).
“yellow” photons in the phosphor layer (Figure 1.1.2c). The combination of “blue” and “yellow” photons leads
to white light (Figure 1.1.2d).
Active area of LED is encased in plastic or ceramic housing. The housing may incorporate one or many dies.

The term SSL (Solid State Lighting) is common term for LED technology being used for lighting applications.
It refers to technology in which the light is emitted by solid-state electroluminescence as opposed to
incandescent bulbs (where the light is emitted via thermal radiation in visible part of spectrum – incandescence).
White LED working principle
The most common method involves coating LEDs of one colour (mostly blue LEDs made of InGaN) with phosphor (Figure 1.1.2a) of different colours to form white light; the resultant LEDs are called phosphor-based white
LEDs.
The “blue” photons emitted by High-brightness LED (HB LED) (Figure 1.1.2b) either passes through
the phosphor layer without alteration, or they are converted to the

such as arsenic or phosphorus may occur.
The efficacy (energy efficiency) of LED lighting fixtures is ratio between net lumen output (in lumens) and
input power (in watts) of a luminaire, or lm/W. LEDs with the highest efficacy are the coolest whites – 5000 K
and above.
For colours based on black body theory, blue occurs at higher temperatures, while red occurs at lower
temperatures. This is the opposite of the cultural associations attributed to colours, in which “red” is “hot”, and
“blue” is “cold”.
Colour rendering index – CRI
Colour rendering index measures the ability of a light source to render colors of illuminated objects faithfully
in reference to an ideal light source – sun or incandescent bulb.

The black-body curve (Planckian locus)
defines the range of colour temperatures, from warm (reddish) to cold
(bluish), within the CIE 1931 colour
space.
Colour temperature of a light source is the temperature of an ideal black-body radiator (solid object with
certain properties heated up to point of incandescence) that radiates light of comparable hue to that of the
light source, and its temperature is expressed in Kelvin’s (K). As a black body gets hotter, wavelength of light
emits progress through a sequence of colors from red to blue (Figure 1.2.3). Sequence of colours is described
by curve (Planckian locus) within a CIE 1931 colour space (Figure 1.2.4).

2.0 LED OPTICS
Optics is the branch of physics which involves the behaviour and properties of light, including its interactions
with matter and the construction of instruments that use or detect it.
Luminaire is a device that changes light distribution of a light source, diffuses the light or eventually changes
its spectral composition. This goal is reached by luminous active parts of luminaire (reflector, diffuser, lens,
etc.) and auxiliary parts (socket, leads, starter, ballast, etc.) that are designed and constructed for specific
light sources. Luminaire is also equipped with parts that are used for fixation, protection of a light source and
feeder.

2.2 Reflector
Reflector is an optical part that regulates luminous flux from the light source by reflection from reflector material - a mirror reflection, a diffuse reflection, and a mixed reflection.
Reflectors are basically divided into two groups: first group includes conic reflectors of four basic geometries
– elliptical, zonal, hyperbolic, and parabolic (Figure 2.2.1); second group includes non-conic reflectors, such
as square or asymmetric ones of the same basic geometries of reflection surfaces.

2.3 Diffuser
Diffuser directs the light by diffuse-scattering through its material. Diffuse light is also obtained by making light
to reflect diffusely from a white surface. Based on diffusion mechanism diffusers are divided into the following
types: Opal, Gaussian, and Prismatic diffuser.

2.1 Introduction
Lens is an optical device with perfect or approximate axial symmetry which transmits and refracts light,
converging or diverging the beam.

A simple lens consists of a single optical element. A compound lens is an array of simple lenses (elements)
with a common axis. The use of multiple elements allows more optical aberrations to be corrected than it is
possible with a single element. Lenses are typically made from glass or transparent plastic.

2.5 Materials
Various optical parts need various optical materials. Aluminium with various types of finish and powder-coated metal sheets are used for reflectors. Clear polycarbonate (PC), polystyrene, and Polymethylmethacrylate
(PMMA) are used for micro-prismatic diffusers and lenses.
Materials for reflective optics – with various characteristics are available in order to achieve different types of
reflection. There are three basic types of reflection: mirror, diffuse and mixed reflection. Difference between
types of reflection is in the proportion of mirror and diffuse part of reflection.
2.4 Lens
3.1 LED THERMAL
LEDs, like all electronic devices, are temperature dependent. LED performance strongly depends on the
ambient temperature. Operating LED-based luminaires at high ambient temperatures without proper
thermal design may overheat LED packages, eventually lead to short lifespan or device failure in the worst
case. Well-designed cooling system is required to maintain long lifetime and high efficacy of the luminaire
(Figure 3.1.1). Therefore thermal management is the most critical part within LED-based luminaire design.
All light sources convert electric power into light and heat in various proportions. Incandescent bulbs emit
mainly in infrared (IR) region with only approx. 8% of light emitted. Fluorescents emit higher portion of light
(21%) but also emit IR, UV, and heat. LEDs generate little IR and convert up to 40% of the electrical power into
the light (see Figure 3.3.1). The rest is converted to heat that must be conducted from the LED active area to
the underlying printed circuit board, cooling system, housing, and atmosphere.

3.4 LED performance
3.2 Heat transfer introduction
Heat transfer is a discipline of thermal engineering that concerns the exchange of thermal energy and heat
between physical systems. It is classified into three main mechanisms (Figure 3.2.1):

The use of LEDs has been increasing dramatically over the last few years. At the beginning, heat dissipation
from LED junction was not a problem because low-power LEDs were used. However, modern high-power LEDs
dissipate much higher portion of heat which has to be removed from the junction in order to maintain high
efficacy, reliability and lifetime of LED-based light source.
Basic parameters to evaluate LED performance are (Figure 3.4.1):

3.3 Power conversion
3.1 Introduction
From the thermal design point of view, typical LED-based luminaire consists of an LED light source, a printed
circuit board (PCB) and a cooling system. The LED light source incorporates semiconductor die (active part),
optics, casing, and heat slug which is used to withdraw the heat away from the die. Heat slug is soldered to
the PCB (mostly metal core PCB – MCPCB).
Figure 3.5.1 shows simplified setup of typical LED luminaire being simulated with basic input/output parameters
Passive cooling
The term “passive” implies that energy-consuming mechanical components like pumps, jets, and fans are
not used. Heat sinks are the most commonly used for LED luminaires. Generally, heat sink has finned metal
encasement that conducts accumulated heat away from the LED light source. Since heat sink does not
consume any additional energy, it is the most energy-efficient cooling system. However, LED light source with
high power consumption requires large cooling area, i.e. complexly shaped heat sink, which adversely
influences luminaire design.
Active cooling
The term “active” implies that cooling system contains energy consuming mechanical components like
pumps, jets, and fans. Active cooling system is necessary for high lumen packages within small luminaires
since it makes smaller structural shapes possible.

3.6 Cooling system
Excess heat affects directly short-term and long-term LED light source performance.
Short-term: Colour shift and light output reduction
Long-term: accelerated lumen depreciation and shortened lifetime
Natural (passive) and forced (active) cooling systems are commonly used for heat dissipation (Figure 3.6.1).
3.7 Thermal design of passive cooling
Passive cooling is the most preferable cooling system for LED luminaries. During such a thermal design it is
necessary to take into the account several factors such a spacing of LED light sources, material properties of
materials used for luminaries’ construction, shape and surface finish of heat sink being designed, and several
others.

4.0 LED BENEFITS
The efficacy of LEDs is improving rapidly (Figure 4.1.1). Latest lab data showed efficacy more than 250 lm/W.
However, in real lighting fixture we have to consider several factors such as control gear performance,
luminous flux depreciation with increasing junction temperature, optical losses etc., which reduce the overall
system efficacy.

4.4 Directionality
Thanks to directional nature of the light emission, LEDs have higher application efficiency than other light
sources in certain lighting applications.
Fluorescent and standard “bulb” shaped incandescent lamps emit light in all directions. Much of the light
produced by the lamp is lost within the fixture, reabsorbed by the lamp, or escapes from the fixture in a
direction that is not useful for the intended application. LEDs emit light in a specific direction, reducing the
need for reflectors and diffusers that direct the light.
4.2 Controllability
LEDs can be integrated into the electronic control system which allows for control of colour balance and
intensity, independent of each other while maintaining colour rendering accuracy. This is impossible with
traditional light sources. For general illumination, LEDs have the ability to dim from 0.1 % to 100 %.
4.3 Size
LEDs are significantly smaller than all other light sources (Figure 4.3.1) which allows designers to create
luminaires in almost any shapes and sizes required by an application.
LED TECHNOLOGY / LED BENEFITS
4.1 High Efficacy
LEDs are highly rugged. They incorporated no filament or fragile glass bulb that can be damaged due to
mechanical vibrations and shocks. LED light fixtures are especially appropriate in applications with strong
probability of lamp breakage such as bridges, industrial areas, or stadiums.
4.7 Instant on, frequent switching
Unlike other traditional light sources such as fluorescent or metal halide lamps, LEDs reach full brightness
instantly, with no re-strike delay. In general illumination, instant turn on can be desirable for both safety and
convenience. In contrast with traditional light sources, LED’s lifetime and lumen maintenance stays
unaffected by frequent switching

4.8 No UV emissions
4.6 Low-temperature operation
Low temperatures present a challenge for fluorescent lamps. At low temperatures, higher voltage is required
to start fluorescent lamp, and luminous flux is decreased. In contrast, LED performance is inherently increased
at low operating temperatures. This feature predestines LEDs for grocery stores, cold storage facilities, and
outdoor application.

LEDs emit light with negligible ultraviolet (UV) and very little infrared radiation. Small amount of radiated heat
by LEDs makes them appropriate for goods which are sensitive to heat. The lack of UV radiation (with appropriate design of optical part) makes them an attractive also for illumination of delicate objects such as artworks
as well as materials subject to UV degradation

4.5 Durability
5.0 INGRESS PROTECTION
Using LEDs reduce environmental impact in several areas. Longer lamp life means that fewer resources are
required for maintenance. They also use no mercury and less phosphorus than fluorescent alternatives. These
facts combined together with high efficiency make LEDs a smart choice while reducing the footprint on the
nature.

The quality of its protection against direct contact, Its sealing against ingress of solid, foreign
bodies (dust, stones, sand, etc.), Its sealing against ingress of water.
The type of protection is defined by two degrees of protection in accordance with IEC529:
Degree of shock-hazard protection & protection against ingress of solid foreign bodies (1st
digit), Degree of protection against the ingress of water (2nd digit).

4.10 Reliability and lifetime
Unlike other light sources, LEDs don‘t “burn out” they just slowly lose their light output over the time. This factor is
important in determining the lifespan of LEDs. Lifetimes can vary depending on operating conditions
(temperature, humidity), current, and type of LED.

A Luminaire or lighting installation in which the ratio of direct to indirect light can be varied via a control system.
Can be achieved by a suspended direct/indirect Luminaire with separate upwards and downwards lamps or by
separate downlights and wallwashers / uplights.
Beam Angle:
Inverse Square Law:
Because light travels in straight lines away from a source, the numbers of lumens within a given solid angle is constant
– irrespective of the distance from the source. This means that the illuminance on a surface within this solid angle is
simply inversely proportional to the square of it’s distance from the source.
LOR (Light Output Ratio):
Lamps (and occasionally Luminaries) with narrow beams are described in terms of their beam angle. The illogical
and confusing practice of quoting the angular diameter (rather than the angular radius) of beam has become
common in Britain and America. Thus a “24° beam” is actually 2X12° beam. Where the angle between the axis
and the edge of the beam is 12°.
The total no. of lumens leaving a Luminaire, divided by the no. of lumens which originally left the lamp. The result is a
dimensionless quantity expressing the “efficiency” of the Luminaire.
Colour Rendering Index:
A measure of the shape of a room for lighting purposes. Defined as the total area of horizontal surfaces (floor plus
ceiling) divide by the total area of vertical surfaces (walls). Room index is used to determine the utilization factor of a
Luminaire in a specific room, since lower and wider rooms (with high room indices) result in better utilization factors.
K = L . B / hLP (L+B) Where: hLP = mounting height of luminaries above working plane.
A measurement of the colour quality of light from the lamp; not usually affected by the Luminaire in which the
lamp is placed. Measured as the degree to which measured colours of objects under the test lamp conform to
those of the same object under a CIE reference illuminant. A good colour rendering index of 1B (80<Ra<90) is
required for office environments, but an excellent rendering index of 1A (90<Ra<100) is essential in many industrial processes and in art classrooms and hospital treatment areas.
Daylight Factor:
Under a standard CIE overcast sky, the illuminance at a point inside a model building will rise and fall in simple
proportion to the illuminance outside. This proportion is defined as the daylight factor and is expressed as a
percentage.
Efficacy:
A measure of the visual efficiency of a light source. Measured in lumens per watt. Yellow light is highly efficacious,
whereas red and blue have low efficacies and green and orange lie somewhere in between. Ultra – violet and
infra red light have efficacies of zero.
Flux Fraction Ratio (FFR):
A number used to describe the effect of lighting in a space. Defined as the ratio of indirect to direct light from a
single Luminaire, or from the combined effect of many Luminaries. For a single Luminaire, divide the ULOR by the
DLOR to obtain FFR.
Intensity:
A measure of total amount of light leaving a source in a given direction. Defined as the number of lumens per
steradian, and measured in candela (cd).
Room Index:
Scallop:
The characteristic curved pool of light thrown onto a wall by a ceiling Luminaire placed near the edge of the ceiling.
Scallops may be unplanned and unsightly, such as those resulting from poor placement of downlights, or they may
from intentional and attractive patterns.
ULOR (Upward Light Output Ratio):
The number of lumens leaving a Luminaire at an angle above the horizontal, divided by the number of lumens which
originally left the lamp. The result is a dimensionless quantity expressing the “upward efficiency” of the Luminaire.
Uniformity:
The difference (expressed as a fraction) b/w the minimum and average illumination values for a specified work plane.
Very poor uniformity can lead to noticeable differences in illumination, but in most cases the purpose of a uniformity
specification is to ensure a minimum illumination value for a work area, so that workers do not suffer eyestrain. For
instance if the average illuminance is 400 Lux with a uniformity of 0.7 , the minimum value should be 400X0.7=280 Lx.
Utilization Factor:
A mathematically – derived measure of the proportion of light from a Luminaire which eventually reaches the working
plane; either directly or by reflection from walls. Utilization factor is determined by the intensity distribution of the
Luminaire, the room index and the reflectance of room surfaces.
