Commodore’s Comments
The loss of our General Manager, David
Yarzab, on the first day of the year weighs
heavily on all of us as I write my first column.
David was not only a great manager, but
I considered him my friend. My personal
condolences to his family. I have asked Past
Commodore Zumbano to write a tribute to
David. Tony was the last Commodore to have
the luxury of David’s experience.
As I begin my term as your Commodore, I reflect on the fact that
each new commodore stands on the shoulders of his predecessor and
all of the Past Commodores that have served. I want to thank P/C Tony
Zumbano and his wife, Kathy, for a wonderful year. Tony proved to
be a steady hand, turning over the helm in a strong financial state and
close to membership equilibrium. The Membership Committee, under
the leadership of Kathy Zumbano, has earned my thanks and that of the
entire membership.
Last month, the membership had the difficult task of selecting
three Directors to join the Board from among the strongest field of
candidates in memory. I want to welcome Turk Hemseri and Gus Olson
and welcome back David Morley. I am confident that they will serve
your interests well.
We had a great holiday period here at the Club starting with our
always impressive Lighting of the Fleet and culminating with the
spectacular New Year’s Eve Party. All of our winners of Lighting of
the Fleet and the Holiday Boat Parade are acknowledged elsewhere
in this Currents, but I want to particularly congratulate Mark and Kat
In Memoriam
David Yarzab, CCM

Obendorf (Knot Pressed) for Best Overall here at the Club, and Gus
and Karla Olson for Best Overall in the parade (Carpe Diem). Joe and
Pat Fanciulli led the parade for the fifth straight year, starting to look
like a tradition.
Of course, we don’t stop the fun just because the holidays have
passed. In January, we playfully roasted P/C Zumbano and followed
that with our signature event, the Commodore’s Ball.
Now in February, or Dead of Winter as we called it up north, we’ll
start the month with our raucous Super Bowl Party. The Deniros and
the Carpers seem to put a unique twist on the event each year. If you
haven’t already bought some squares on our score boards at the Tiki,
you can pick some out before the kickoff. I’m betting on the spare ribs!
We’ll follow up that party with the Fleet Captain’s Roast on the 8th.
This popular cruisers’ event has been moved back to the Club so that
we can all enjoy poking retiring F/C Turk Hemseri one more time.
For our Valentine’s Day celebration on the 15th, the Ablings and the
Wiggs will convert the Club into a speakeasy for a Roaring Twenties
Party. Flappers and their zoot suited “gangstas” will dance to the Big Z
Band who regularly rock Marina Jack.
We’ll show our cultural side at the Ladies Luncheon on the 21st.
Antoinette has arranged for some of the principal singers of the Sarasota
Opera to entertain us. I know she’s hoping some of the guys will attend
as well. I’ll be there.
Antoinette and I are honored to serve as your Commodore and first
lady. We’ll work hard to make this another great year.
Bill Dowling, Commodore

“Life is good.” Those three simple words
marked the end of David’s column each
month in the Currents. “Life” to David was
his wife, Geri, his children and grandchildren
and, of course, the Venice Yacht Club.
David began his VYC career in September,
1989 in the maintenance department, quickly
rising to maintenance manager. His stellar
work there led to his appointment as Food and
Beverage Manager - not an easy transition.
Typical of David, however, he handled that
position with enthusiasm and dedication,
leading to his promotion to Dining Room
Manager. Not surprisingly, his effort and
engaging personality again led to success
and, in 2006, David was promoted to General
Manager, a position he filled with pride for
the next seven years.
Never complacent, David was focused on
personal improvement, spending weekends
taking courses which led to earning his
Certified Club Manager designation. The
CCM designation is known as the hallmark of
professionalism in club management. He was
also active in the Venice-Nokomis Rotary and
served on the Board of Rotary Futures for
three years.
All these business accomplishments and
statistics don’t define David, however. What defined
him was his loyalty to VYC and its members and
staff. The Club was not a job for David, it was his
life. At a Saturday evening function, you might
see him in a tux, welcoming the mayor and other
dignitaries. The next day, he would be out at the
Tiki in jeans, mowing the lawn around the flagpole.
It was no surprise when you called the Club and
David answered or when he delivered your meal at
dinner.
Other than family, there was nothing more
important to David than “his” staff. His pleasant
demeanor could disappear in a second if he felt that
an employee was being treated unfairly. That’s
another trait that defined him - his unique ability to
be an effective manager and a good friend to his
staff, all in one package.
VYC is a special place, more like a family than
a club. David has been a beloved member of that
family for over 25 years. We will not be the same
without him, but he would want us to move forward.
The best way to celebrate David’s legacy will be to
support and enjoy the Club he worked so hard to
build for us.

2014 VYC ART SHOW GUEST
Karen Hitt will be our guest artist this year. Her classically training
at Parson’s School of Design in New York, with a major in illustration,
is ever evident in her style. Her area landscapes/skyscapes reflect the
essence of the landmark with accentuation on the effects of light to the
scene. Karen is predominately an oil painter. Her style is representational and impressionistic, making the emphasis on color and effect of
light along with depicting innocence candidly with expressions where a
character or portrait also plays a role.
The Artist Statement: My paintings capture influential daily
moments, and the lasting effects these memories play on our hearts and
minds throughout our lives. As an artist the passion is to reflect light,
life, land expressions as genuinely experienced “At that moment.” I
paint in the hope to transport the viewer while also exposing them to the
very emotion that stops us both now in our tracks to experience a view;
simply, seeking with my art to bring you into viewing your own, “At that
moment..” too.
Please mark your calendars for March 19, 20 and 21. This is going to
be a real treat!

Message from the Fleet Captain Sail
I’m honored to serve as your Fleet
Captain for Sail in 2014. We have an
exciting year ahead with cruises and
boating events, including regattas.
We will also have our traditional
flag and memorial ceremonies, such
as the Blessing of the Fleet. Sailors
are encouraged to participate in all
events.
December marked the 25th
Anniversary of the Venice Christmas Boat Parade. This
spectacular event was originated by yacht club members back
in 1989. There were 46 boats in the parade this year, with
eight boats from VYC. Joe and Pat Fanciulli were on Trust
No One, David and Susan Morley on Blue Aspen, Taylor
MacPherson and Ann Thompson on Mobile Home, Mark and
Kat Obendorf on Knot Pressed, Stan and Tina Stenten on
Angel Fish, Cindy Watson and Rod Jacobson on Pure Cin,
Don and Linda Schillinger on Linda ‘B’ and Gus and Karla
Olson on Carpe Diem.
The weather was fantastic and it was a beautiful evening
of lights, music, food and libations. Spectators were lined up
all along the shorelines expressing their gratitude with cheers
and applause. The Club’s cannon was also in full action that
evening with 200 rounds shot off on Carpe Diem to the
yell of “fire in the hole” in celebration of this momentous
occasion.
Of the eight awards presented by the Venice Christmas
Boat Parade, our Club returned with half of the awards!

VYC Kayak Group
Members and guests celebrated a warm December afternoon
kayaking from the Club.
Kayaking is a year-round activity in Venice and winter
is a good time to explore Curry Creek and Shakett
Creek. Enjoy the fledgling ospreys and herons as you
paddle past their nests—ospreys on channel markers
and herons camouflaged in mangroves. If you don’t
have your own kayak, try borrowing one of the Club’s
loaners. Reserve through the Dockmaster at 4833625. We suggest a donation to VYC of $15 per day.
Upcoming activities:
Tuesday, February 4, 11:30 a.m. Join the Kayak Table
at Fleet Captains’ lunch to meet other kayakers.
No scheduled trips. Watch for e-mails.
Call Nancy Simonetti at 486-8166 or Beth
Anderson at 685-8065 for info and to be added to
our e-mail contact list.
Sailors’ Table
Thursday, February 6
I would like to thank the VYC fleet that participated in the
parade and especially our shipmates Jim and Patty Begley
(Mr. and Mrs. Pirate Santa), Denny and Michele Wertheimer,
Melinda Short, Michael Nemser and my wife Karla and
daughter Tiffany who were all in full pirate costume. It takes
a lot of time, effort and dedication to take part in an event
like this.
The impressive 25th Anniversary “Best in Show” trophy
was presented to Commodore Tony Zumbano on December
19 and is on permanent display in the VYC trophy case
located upstairs in the Sunset Room.
Upcoming Sailing Events:
Windjammer Regatta – Feb. 22nd -23rd
Shark Tooth Regatta – May 3rd
May you have fair winds and following seas…

secluded natural harbor near the mouth of the
Caloosahatchee River in South Fort Myers.
The Club boasts wonderful facilities including a
lovely clubhouse, an excellent dining room, Har Tru
tennis courts, and a heated swimming pool. The wellprotected 65 dock marina can accommodate vessels up
to 78 feet, and has a full-time harbormaster and fuel
and pumpout services. A friendly service-oriented staff
enhances the enjoyment of Club members and guests.

located a mile away.
Contact the Grahams at [email protected]
to join the cruise.
It’s a new year, and I am excited
to be your new Fleet Captain Power
for the next twelve months. Trying to
follow in Turk’s footsteps is going to
be a real challenge as he did a really
outstanding job this past year. Speaking
of Turk, I hope you will join me at this
year’s Fleet Captain Power Roast to be
held on Saturday February 8th here at
the Venice Yacht Club. It was decided to
have the roast at our Club this year so that more VYC members
could attend keeping the money in our own Club. This will be a
fun event as we relive the experiences from last year’s cruises. I
hope you will join us even if you are not a boater!
We did have a cruise in January the weekend of 17-19th to
Sarasota Yacht Club (although at this writing it hasn’t taken
place). This year, we are planning to have reciprocal trips with
other yacht clubs - that is, a number of boats come to VYC as
we go to their club. Two such cruises are planned for this year in
March and May. See the cruise calendar for details.
A cruise to Palm Island is scheduled this month. This is
always well attended and a favorite destination. Turk and Anita
Hemseri will be leading this cruise and have a fabulous weekend
planned for February 21-23. You can contact them directly to
reserve a spot.
The Fleet Captain’s Lunch is held every Tuesday at 11:30
a.m. Please join your fellow members, boaters and non-boaters
alike, for a great lunch and casual conversation.

I am honored and pleased to serve as the chairman of your
Venice Yacht Club Charitable Foundation. In a little over three
years, the VYC Foundation has attained a prominent position in
our community. We owe a special thanks to last year’s committee,
chaired by Michael Nemser, and committee members Matt DePalma,
Merle Graser, Jerry Jarrett, Elise John, John Moore, Dewey
Snowden, Denny Wertheimer and Tony Zumbano. Importantly, we
owe thanks to the 132 VYC members who have already supported
the Foundation with their generous contributions.
The Foundation has set a strong course with sound governance,
has established a positive reputation for itself and the Club, and has
helped many people with grants of over $129,000 to 33 different
local organizations.
Although I have lived in Venice for over 23 years, I am relatively
new to the Venice Yacht Club. This is my first position with the
Yacht Club. I will need input from the present and past Foundation
Committee members and the general membership. I plan to do
lots of listening and work with the Foundation Committee to plot
the best course for this year. I am pleased that Jack Murphy and
Melinda Short have agreed to help with important parts of the
Foundation operations.
The Foundation’s success is due to the support and generosity
of our VYC membership, such as the members of our Founders
Club: Max Eisenbarth, Betty Castigliano Scott, John and Bonnie
Sammet, Hubert and Elaine Ocamb and Tony and Kathy Zumbano.
Everyone’s support and continuing participation is very much
appreciated.
The Foundation will continue this year with two grant cycles
(May 1 and November 1). You are encouraged to submit grant
applications on behalf of your favorite local charities that support
youth boating, health and education, veterans and active military,
the environment and civic improvement. Applications are simple
and can be found under the Charitable Foundation tab on the VYC
web site. We have plans to increase our presence in the community
beyond our financial support by holding a number of VYC volunteer
days. Our first on on January six at All Faiths Food Bank was very
successful with 22 members participating by sorting enough food
for 3,200 meals. I hope you will consider joining us in these efforts.
On behalf of Jack, Melinda and the rest of the Foundation
Committee, I look forward to another great year at the VYC and your
continuing support as we “Chart a course to a better community.”

The Venice YMCA has a

is now included.
Please view our page on the VYC web site for a

chocolaty mousse recipe is chocolate to the
extreme. Seriously delicious, this is a date
night must. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Chocolate Mousse
3 egg yolks
6 squares (6oz.) semi-sweet chocolate
1/3 cup water
1 cup heavy cream
3 tablespoons confectioner sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Semi-sweet chocolate shavings for garnish
Directions: In a small bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks.
In a saucepan, melt the chocolate with water, stirring
until smooth. Add three tablespoons of chocolate
mixture to egg yolks, then pour mixture back into the
pan with the remaining chocolate. Cook over low heat,
stirring until thickened, about one minute. Transfer to a
new bowl and let cool for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, mix
the cream, sugar and vanilla with a mixer on high speed
until soft peaks form. Transfer ½ cup of mixture to a
small bowl and refrigerate. Fold the remaining mixture
into the chocolate mixture. Spoon into four dessert
cups. Refrigerate until firm (approx. two hours). Spoon
refrigerated cream mixture onto mousse before serving
and add chocolate shavings as garnish.
Bon appétit!

Spring Semester
Our spring semester began on January 11th and ends on May
17th. Our schedule includes:
★Participation in three major regattas along the west coast
of Florida
★Big Boat Day for our young sailors with Venice Sailing
Squadron members
★The VYBA-hosted regatta here in Venice in April for
other FL. west coast based young sailing organizations
★Beginning Sailing Program during Venice area schools
spring break week
The spring break week offering, a heavily discounted tuition
of $200 per sailor, is the equivalent of our two-week Summer
Learn to Sail Program. It will run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
It also offers the opportunity for participating girl or boy scouts
to earn a sailing merit badge. Successful completion of this
one-week offering in the spring qualifies the sailor for one of
our advanced sailing classes in our upcoming summer program.
The sailor is then qualified to enter our summer Green Fleet
sailing program and becomes eligible to join our school year
sailing program in late August as school begins.
Club 420 Fleet – two-person sailboats!
New this year, our 420 fleet of nine sailors is having great
fun and learning how the skipper and the crew work together to
enjoy fun on the water and hone racing skills.
Adult Twilight Sailing
This fun-filled evening of sailing returns during the spring
semester. It occurs on Thursday afternoons and is open to
anyone who is interested. Participants may sail in our Club
420’s, or they may sail in their own boats. VYBA provides
a coach and a coach boat to ensure everyone’s safety. There
are racing opportunities, and several “older” sailors are quite
competitive on the water!
Introducing the VYBA Venetian Cup Regatta
This regatta will replace what was formerly known as the
Jabbo Gordon Regatta held in Lemon Bay. It is planned for
April 12th. A large regatta committee is working now to enable
a great and successful fun-filled day. Stay tuned for more news
next month!
Thank You
As always, the VYBA is deeply appreciative of the support
provided by the Venice Yacht Club and its members. This
support is integral to continuing this impressive legacy of 62
years… which exists for all youth of greater Venice.
Remembering … David Yarzab
The tragic death of David leaves all of us in shock and in
grief. David was a staunch supporter of the VYBA. Its mission,
and its purpose. He was always ready to assist the Board of
Directors, our young sailors, their parents, our coaches, and the
director of the VYBA, and he did so with a huge smile. The
entire VYBA organization shall miss him.
