Hello, all you wonderful members! It is time to renew your annual St Andrew Society membership!!

ABOUT THE
COUNCIL
Fàilte! 2016 has proven to be an
eventful year. The Saint Patrick’s Day
Parade in March was again a huge success and we were greeted by thousands of excited parade viewers. March
also included a fundraiser Scotch Tasting and Concert for the Festival. Participants had an outstanding time.
April brings two very elegant events.
The Spring Brunch promises to be an
occasion for Society members to enjoy
delicious fare and each other’s company. The Kirkin’ of the Tartan will be held
on April 24 at Saint John’s Cathedral.
This event is an annual tradition that
features important elements of our culture set in a beautiful venue. Please try
to attend.
The Colorado Scottish Festival and
Rocky Mountain Highland Games will
be held in Snowmass again on August
5-7, 2016. The event has free entry and
parking this year! The same wonderful
features that we all enjoy...and more…
are not to be missed!
Be sure to visit our website for all the
details for each event and visit the Festival’s website at scottishgames.org.
We will have several openings on the
SASC Council Meetings
council this coming year and I want to
extend an invitation to anyone who is
interested. The slate is voted in at the
October Annual General Meeting.
I can attest to the privilege of being on
the council and what an honor it is to
serve the Society. I am ever impressed
with the dedication of the members of
the council and the Society as we preserve our heritage for generations to
come. It will be easy for all to celebrate
based on the work that has been done
before.
Slainte!

St Pat’s & Kirkin...
Who participated? Well, I cannot be at everything! You folks
need to tell me! Send me info
and pictures!
Who organized? Pretty sure Larry Hay is the driving force behind St Pat’s each year. And
other members
who make it a
festive, fun-fill
ed day! The
Kirkin is assuredly a group
effort. St John’s enjoys this service immensely! And so do we!
Piper, Jamie Cuthill and delightful wife/drummer, Lindsay, are
instrumental as are many others. Thank Youuuuu, All !!!
Organized in 1979, The Rocky
Mountain Highland Dancers
(RMHD) support Scottish Highland
Dance in Colorado. Currently over
100 dancers
participate in
workshops,
competitions,
and more than
50 performances per
year. RMHD
works with
children starting from the
age of four to instill cultural heritage, the discipline of dancing, and
a love of the arts and live performance. Donations to the RMHD
help pay for local workshops and
competitions that we sponsor, as
well as expenses for the dancers
to travel to workshops and competitions outside of Colorado. Annual
Membership to the RMHD is
$15.00. RMHD.org
COLORADO SCOTTISH
COUNTRY DANCERS
Scottish Country Dancing is the
social and ballroom dancing of
Scotland, combining folk and court
dance elements.
The St. Andrew Scottish Country
Dancers sponsor classes in Boulder, Denver, Fort Collins, and Colorado Springs.
We have a lively demonstration
team which introduces audiences
to the fun and beauty of Scottish
Country Dance and demonstrates
at the major St. Andrew Society
events, and at local schools and
heritage festivals in the front
range area. Any contributions to
the organization will go towards
paying the rental fees at class ven3
ues and purchasing music CDs to
dance to.
COLORADO TARTAN DAY
COUNCIL
President Woodrow Wilson said,
“Every line of strength in American
history is a line covered with Scottish blood.”
From Dr. Benjamin Waterhouse,
who was the only doctor among
the founders of Harvard Medical
School, to the famous musician
Johnny Cash, Scottish Americans
are woven into the fabric of American culture. These contributions
are the reason the Congresses of
the United States and the State of
Colorado set aside April 6th as a
day of recognition. The Colorado
Tartan Day Council (CTDC) was
formed for the sole purpose of
ensuring that this day is honored
and celebrated. Thus, Tartan Day
festivities are held in April, including Highland Tea’s, Whisky Tastings, Dinners and
Ceilidhs (parties!)
as well as numerous
other activities
throughout the year.
Donations to the Colorado
Tartan Day Council go toward
funding these activities. Annual
membership for the CTDC is
$25.00 for a Family and $15.00 for
an individual. For more information or to make a donation, go
to ColoradoTartanDay.com.

Colorado Tartan Day: The Legacy
Shown in the photograph
above with his wife, Patty,
Dale Baird Sr and a small
group of friends, including Dik
Lowe, worked to establish Colorado Tartan Day in its earliest
form. Small parties were held
and it eventually took root.
Dale approached the State
Legislature which made it an
official State observance
when, in 1996, the Colorado
General Assembly declared a
Scottish Tartan Day for Colorado.
In 1998, April 6th was designated as National Tartan Day
to recognize the achievements

and contributions made by
Scottish Americans to the United States. This date was chosen to coincide with the day in
1320 when the Scottish Declaration of Independence was
signed at Arbroath, Scotland
(The Declaration of Arbroath).
Colorado House Joint Resolution 96-1014 designated April
6th as Tartan Day in the State
of Colorado.

Beltane-Celtic May Day Festival
La Bealltainn (The Beginning of Summer)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beltane
William Ewart Gladstone
(1809-1898)
Was a British statesman,
considered by some to be
one of the trhee greatest Liberals in British history. In a
career lasting over 60 years,
during the Victorian Golden
Age of Great Britain, he
served as Prime Minister four
separate times (1868-1874,
1880-1885, Feb-Jul 1886,
and 1892-1894), more than
any other person. He is remembered for introducing
secret ballot at elections, for
proposing Irish Home rule
and improving the legal rights
of Irish tenant farmers.
Though born in Liverpool, his
father was from Edinburgh
and his mother from Rossshire, and he was of purely
Scottish ancestry.

Beltane is the anglicised name for the
Gaelic May Day festival. Most commonly it
is held on 1 May, or about halfway between the spring equinox and the summer
solstice. Historically, it was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and
the Isle of Man. In Scottish Gaelic the
name for the festival day is Là Bealltainn
and in Manx Gaelic Laa Boaltinn/Boaldyn.
It is one of the four Gaelic seasonal festivals—along with Samhain, Imbolc and
Lughnasadh—and is similar to the Welsh
Calan Mai.
The aos sí (often referred to as spirits or
fairies) were thought to be especially active at Beltane (as at Samhain) and the
goal of many Beltane rituals was to appease them. Most scholars see the aos sí
as remnants of the pagan gods and nature spirits. Beltaine was a "spring time
festival of optimism" during which "fertility
ritual again was important, perhaps connecting with the waxing power of the
sun".
Bonfires Are a key part of the festival to
this day. Hearth fires and candles are
doused before lighting the bonfire, generally on a mountain or hill. Burning torches
from the bonfire are taken home, where
they are carried around the house or
boundary of the farmstead and used to re
-light the hearth taking advantage of protective powers.
Yellow flowers such as primrose, rowan, hawthorn, gorse, hazel and marsh
marigold were placed at doorways and
windows in 19th century Ireland, Scotland
and Mann. Sometimes loose flowers were
strewn at the doors and windows or made
into bouquets, garlands or crosses and
fastened to them. They would also be
fastened to cows and equipment for milking and butter making. It is likely that
Ciorcal Cairde Irish Pipes & Drums
such flowers were used because they
evoked fire.
The first water drawn from a well on
Beltane was seen as especially potent, as
was Beltane morning dew. At dawn on
Beltane, maidens would roll in the dew or
wash their faces with it. It would also be
collected in a jar, left in the sunlight, and
then filtered. The dew was thought to
increase sexual attractiveness, maintain
youthfulness, and help with skin ailments.
People also took steps specifically to ward
-off or appease the aos sí. Food was left
or milk poured at the doorstep or places
associated with the aos sí, such as 'fairy
trees', as an offering.
The town of Peebles in the Scottish Borders holds a traditional week-long Beltane
Fair every year in June, when a local girl
is crowned Beltane Queen on the steps of
the parish church. Like other Borders festivals, it incorporates a Common Riding.
Additionally, the Edinburgh Beltane Fire
Festival has expanded into a large participatory arts event. This is hosted by the
Beltane Fire Society formed in 1988.
We hope to see you all at many of
the upcoming events listed in the
(Keer’cle Care’deh) = Circle of Friends
Highland Herald calendar.
