Chain Life Wear Properties 4-Ball Test
Chain Life Wear Properties
4-Ball Test
Results indicate that Chain Life
provides 114% increased wear
protection when compared to base oil
and a leading popular brand chain
lubricant resulting in improved
efficiency, longer chain life and lower
maintenance costs.

Specified Testing Parameters:
(Load-40kg) (Temp-25C) (Time-60min)
(Dilution-Neat) (Speed-1200rpm)
Wear scar length results in millimeters (mm)
Shorter wear scar = BETTER PERFORMANCE
Description:
The Four Ball Test is used to determine
the Wear Preventive (WP) and Extreme
Pressure (EP) characteristics of
greases and lubricating oils in sliding
steel-on-steel applications. A single
12.7mm diameter steel ball is rotated at
a pre-selected load, speed,
temperature and time, as determined
by ASTM and IP test standards, against
three stationary steel balls immersed in
a lubricant. The Wear Preventive
capacity of the lubricant is then
determined by calculating the average
measurement of the wear scar,
in millimeters, created on each
of the three stationary balls. A
smaller wear scar indicates more
effective WP and EP lubricating
properties resulting in better
performance and longer tool life.
