antique & collectible dealers offering something for everyone!
Linens, glassware, and furniture will be offered at this year’s
wonderful antique shows and much, much more!
Our Railroad Hobby Show Features:
While on the grounds, enjoy a weekend of the hit & miss engines, a civil war
encampment, the sounds of D & S tractor pullers, and live entertainment
throughout the day. Be sure to bring your appetite for all the great country
cooking and awesome desserts. Take time on Sunday to mill around the classic
car show, or bring in your own classic car or truck. Each driver receives free
admission along with a dash plaque. One trophy will be awarded to the best
overall vehicle. A parade of tractors will also take place on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Great Starter: It had taken Bill Bakeman 40 years to assemble this
set of six banister back chairs that were strongly attributed to
Zadock King of Deerfield, Mass. He told me that the crest rails
and the finials were typical of King’s work, as was the double
ring in the center of the front stretchers. They’d been around his
dining table for years, and he thought that the time had now come
to show them in public. An instant and special collection for a
reasonable price: $8,350 at Bromley.

Great Starter: This tricycle boneshaker was patented by
the Montpelier Mfg. Co., Vermont, on August 12, 1862, so
Nancy Prince thought it would be a natural for Weston:
she was right - it sold at the preview party. It had iron-shod
wheels, no springs and was accompanied by a photograph
of it that had been made into a postcard entitled “Wooden
Velocipede.” The card had been mailed to a Mrs. William G.
Fisher of New Orleans.

out, he argues, that there
are really good antiques at
there at affordable prices.
As an example, he showed
me this pewter teapot made
by Boardman and Hart who
were working in New York
City between 1828 and
1853. The bottom was clearly signed, it had the “X” mark
indicating high quality metal, and showed the lathe marks
where it had been cleaned up after casting. As a bonus, it
afforded an interesting insight into the pewterer’s process: it
was an “inverted mold” teapot – if you look closely you can
see that the top and bottom halves are from the same mold.

Show Stoppers and Great Starters
Show Stopper: Amy Finkel told me just how rare it was to find a pair of
samplers worked by sisters. But that was what she brought to Deerfield.
Charlotte and Miranda Frye were born in 1797 and 1806, respectively,
in Andover, Mass. Charlotte’s sampler is more vertical, and is still 18th
century in composition, whereas the larger, square sampler by Miranda
is clearly of the early 19th century. Amy thought it quite likely that the
same teacher taught both sisters: The lettering of the alphabets and the
verse is almost identical and the phrasing of the inscription is virtually
the same. Each of the sisters used a large basket filled with flowers
as her central element centered along the bottom of the sampler.
Both samplers are silk on linen, and Amy asked $28,000 for the pair. I
particularly liked the verse on Miranda’s: Its celebration of the “arts of
industry” seemed so earnest and so very 19th century!

Show Stopper: Sumpter Priddy enthused about the
sideboard he brought to Deerfield. It had been made
in Virginia or North Carolina, 1800 – 1810. The line
and proportions were perfect with the simple and
solid block of the case uplifted on fine tapering legs.
“It just shows,” he told me, “the elegance that these
southern cabinetmakers were capable of.” He showed
me how the vertical run of the legs through the

Atlantic City 2011: More Bang for
your Buck
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - JMK Shows successfully took over the
Atlantic City Antiques & Collectibles Show last year, with 250
dealers and almost 5,000 people attending the promoter’s first
show at the venue.
For 2011, Convention Center executives, Atlantic City
Convention & Visitors Bureau officials and JMK SHOWS
management have coordinated their expansion efforts to create
lower, “recession buster” operating costs for all exhibitors signing
up to participate in the March 19 & 20 show. For example, the
cost of a standard 12-ft. booth will now start at $300 (instead
of $600), exhibit tables will now be less expensive to rent and
all hotels serving the show at the Convention Center will offer
lower prices, with some starting as low as $49 per night. Hotels
will be offering special package deals to AC Show guests, and
casino hotels will be offering their “high rollers” free tickets to
the antiques show.

The American Antiques Show
NEW YORK, NY - Recognized as one of the most important
Americana and folk art fairs in the country, The American Antiques
Show (TAAS) features 300 years of great American design and
marks the opening of Americana Week in New York City.
Each year TAAS honors a different state at the Gala Preview
