It is important to ensure that minimum mount spacings in side mounting antennas are
observed and in the case of type 18S/D, the gate end top mount is fitted, otherwise the
antenna may not have adequate support to survive wind conditions. In the case of high
speed vessels, it usually better to fit a slightly smaller antenna than normally indicated for
displacement hull vessels, unless the antenna is designed for the purpose.
MF Antenna Systems
Type T Top
Professional tower supported wire MF NDB antenna system
Designed as a higher efficiency alternative to vertical
radiators, the T Top is a wire capacitive top antenna system
for NDB and Differential GPS transmissions in the MF
Band.
The antenna system requires support at either end from
two towers or masts, free standing or guyed (option). The
radiating section is the centre wire vertical base fed via
high voltage insulators and corona shield. Standard power
rating is 1 kW CW with 100% modulation. Higher power is
available to order. Halyards and winching equipment are
available for antenna erection as an option.
As antenna height is directly related to efficiency, the antenna supporting tower should be as high as
possible. Apart from the antenna itself, system efficiency is greatly dependent upon earth conditions
and the installed earth system. The Moonraker supplied earth system is based on 60 radials spaced
at 6° and not less than 100 metres long (328ft) with earth stakes at each end. The radials are
normally bare copper buried approximately 150mm (5.9 in) terminated on copper earth stakes.
T Top systems are available to suit varying conditions and support structures and are designed for
use with commonly available couplers. Actual overall performance depends mainly upon the
antenna coupling unit Q and earth losses. The performance specifications given below are typical of
a 70m long (230ft) three wire top section supported by 27m (88.6ft) towers. A mid span sag of 5.5m
(18ft) is allowed for giving a vertical radiating length of 21.5m (70.5ft).

The 15 metre (50ft) whip is base mounted and guyed to
withstand winds of 216 km/h (134 mph). Construction
is of heavy gauge high temper marine grade aluminium
alloy to give a large low loss surface area for maximum
radiating efficiency. High durability epoxy based
coating provides protection from chemical attack,
abrasion and the effects of ozone and ultra-violet
radiation. The base insulator is ribbed high strength
low loss polypropylene shrouded with a dished corona
shield. RF connection is via a stainless steel terminal
above the corona shield.
The antenna breaks down into five transportable
sections which slip together and fasten with stainless
steel locking screws. The top wire radials are utilised
as capacitive top loading. Joints are “O” ring sealed
to prevent water ingress. The top loading coil is easily
replaced should this be necessary. A hinged base
mount is available as an option to assist further with
erection and maintenance. The system may be
deployed by 2 to 4 people in up to 1 hour.
150MF systems are tailored to suit individual frequency and ground conditions and can be
used with commonly available couplers. Earth system design is critical as actual overall
performance depends mainly upon the antenna coupling unit Q and earth losses relating to
soil type, soil conductivity and earth system.
The performance specifications given below are based on an earth system resistance of 1Ω
and an ATU (coupler) working Q of 200. The expected feed point impedance is 1.35 -J970Ω
at 300 kHz, 2.1 +j938Ω at 490 kHz and 3.9 +j1847Ω at 518 kHz.

The following performance figures are theoretical and based upon the assumption that
the following installation conditions apply:
.
The antenna is mounted in a location that is reasonably clear from other antennas
and metal structures which may absorb power, cause distortion of the omnidirectional
pattern and affect tuning.
.
Earth loss resistance of 1Ω and an ATU (coupler) working Q of 300. Radiation
efficiency is directly affected by earth system and ATU losses.
.
Field strength is the expected value based on 100w CW input to the antenna and over
an unobstructed sea water path. Performance for land based systems will differ.

For optimum performance, the required antenna length is
determined by operating frequency. However, this may be
varied according to the size of the helipad where
insufficient space is available, an efficient antenna tuning
unit (ATU) being required to make up the difference. The
number of standoff support insulators is determined by
physical antenna length. A typical installation would
comprise 12 standoffs plus a support standoff at each end.
RF connection is direct from one end of the antenna to the
antenna tuning unit.
Insulator construction is of low loss polypropylene. Insulator outer ends are fitted with a stainless
steel eyebolt to facilitate threading through the antenna cable. The inner ends of the galvanised
steel tubular sections are fitted with a hot dip galvanised steel channel section permitting the tubes
to be locked in the vertical upwards maintenance/installation position or the vertical downwards or
horizontal operating positions, thus allowing maximum freedom for landing aircraft and to comply
with local safety regulations. The channel section may be bolted or welded to the helideck safety
net supports. Antenna cable is supplied with stainless steel wire clamp grips for making off and the
two end tubes are fitted with stainless steel thimbles and turnbuckles to enable tensioning of the
antenna from each end.
Efficiency and range of this type of antenna is dependent upon a number of factors: quality of
installation and earth, transmitter power, ATU efficiency, frequency of operation and atmospheric
noise. All have a bearing on range. Notwithstanding, with a transmit power of 100w, a reliable
operating range of better than 100 km (52 miles) should be possible.

Type 23B/3C
High power capability base mounted marine HF whip antenna
for military and professional vessels over 18 metres (60 feet)
The type 23B/3C is a 7 metre (23 ft) heavy duty self supporting whip antenna with a
continuous power capability up to 1 kW in the frequency range 1.6 to 30 MHz. It is
designed to provide efficient and reliable communications in the professional and
military services. NATO No. 5985/66/129/1426.
The 23B/3C is base mounted and designed to withstand constant wind speeds up to 250
km/h (156 mph) without permanent deformation effects. Construction is of heavy gauge
marine grade aluminium alloy tubing to give a large low loss surface area for maximum
radiating efficiency, fully protected by a high durability epoxy based coating resistant to
chemical attack, abrasion and the effects of ozone and ultra-violet radiation. Standard

A high reliability corona shield forming part of the base insulator reduces the effects of
flashover caused by saltwater spray and permits a rapid recovery from saltwater induced
short circuits caused by splashing. The shield neither burns nor leaves tracks, even
when subject to severe surface arcing, and is impact resistant, being moulded onto the
antenna using a flexible modified polymer. The physical shape of the shield is arranged
to provide a long and broken path to further assist with low leakage of RF energy.
For ease of transport, the antenna breaks down into two sections [base 3.76m (12.3 ft);
top 3.35m (11 ft)] which slip together and fasten with four stainless steel locking screws.

Type 23L/D
High power HF antenna for vessels over 18 metres (60 feet)
with laydown facility for horizontal operation to overcome skip zone problems
Designed to permit easy adjustment of antenna polarisation and to provide higher efficiency
communications in the transmit and receive modes for professional ocean going vessels
where higher power and environmental capability is required. The antenna utilises our
heavy duty aluminium laydown mount which permits the antenna to be operated in both
horizontal (for high angle radiation) and vertical (low angle radiation) positions.
The type 23L/D is a 7 metre (23 ft) heavy duty self supporting whip antenna with a power
capability of 800W PEP in the frequency range 1.6 to 30 MHz. The antenna is designed to
withstand winds to 240 km/h (150 mph) without permanent deformation effects, being a
version of the military type 23B/3C. It has minimal tip deflection which is very important
when operating in the horizontal mode whilst the vessel in underway.
Construction is of heavy gauge marine grade tempered aluminium alloy tubing, providing a
large, low loss radiating surface, fully protected by a high durability epoxy based coating
resistant to chemical attack, abrasion and the effects of ozone and ultra -violet radiation.
Standard colour is silver grey (other colours to order). The base insulator is nylon with
stainless steel connection. A low loss loading coil 2.75 m (9 ft) from the top is available as an
option. For ease of transport, the antenna breaks down into 2 sections [base 3.76m (12.3 ft); top
3.35m (11 ft)] which slip together and fasten with 3 stainless steel locking screws.
The system is designed with an easy quick lock pin so that lowering and
erection can be carried out by one man. Simply releasing the pin and
swinging the antenna (8kg) to the new position. The locking pin and lock
are secured by safety wires. Ideally, for best high angle radiation, the
antenna, when horizontal, should be as far above the deck below as
possible, particularly when above a metal deck.

Type 15S/R
Marine HF antenna for vessels
where permanent mounting is not possible or not required
The 4.6m (15ft) 15S/R antenna system is a larger version of our very popular type 12S/R
emergency antenna system. Easily and quickly assembled or removed, this
demountable whip is especially suitable for trailed craft or as an emergency antenna
where a wire to masthead system is used, such as a backstay on yachts,.
The antenna is easily assembled from two sections of 2.7 (9 ft) and 1.85m (6 ft), which
are easily stored below deck. These sections screw together on a self locking taper
and then into a permanently deck mounted feedthrough insulator to provide instant,
efficient communications in the HF Band range from 2-30 MHz.
Antenna construction comprises light-weight marine grade tempered aluminium alloy
tubing fully protected from the marine environment by a high durability epoxy based
coating resistant to chemical attack, abrasion and the effects of ultra-violet radiation.
The deckmount is of high density polyethylene with chromed bronze insert and
stainless steel mounting bolt. Fittings are of nylon, stainless steel and chromed
bronze with low loss coils (loaded top sections).
A backstay wire connection kit is available so that the deckmount may be used as a
deck feedthrough insulator to feed a backstay antenna or the ship’s main HF antenna.
If dismasted or the main antenna is lost, the backstay feed wire connection may be
removed and the whip antenna screwed into the deckmount.
The antenna is available unloaded or resonant at a single frequency (the highest to be
used, normally 2.6, 4.6, 6.3, 8.3 or 10 MHz). For operation on frequencies lower than the
resonant frequency, the difference is made up in the ATU.

E Plate
Radio/Electrical earth system
for wooden or fibreglass vessels
A compact radio or electrical earth plate designed to provide an efficient low resistance earth
connection in wooden or fibreglass vessels for the professional and non professional user.
The Moonraker E Plate has an effective surface area of approximately 1265 sq cm (1.26 sq ft)
and is not appreciably affected by marine growth fouling. Two units connected together meet
the Australian marine electrical standard of 2500 sq cm.
Normally constructed of 94% low corrosion copper alloy, designed especially for tropical
waters, it is also available in low corrosion aluminium for boats fitted with aluminium outboard
legs or under conditions where bronze fittings should not be used, to prevent electrolysis.
Two threaded studs are integrally connected with the E Plate for mounting. No pre assembly
is necessary and there are no bolted joints to corrode and cause problems.

Feedthrough Insulators
High efficiency insulation for HF marine communications
Small Insulator
Large Insulator
Designed to provide high quality protection for HF antenna feed line on marine vessels where
cable needs to be passed through decks a nd bulkheads.
Moonraker Feedthrough Insulators are constructed from high strength, low loss polypropylene.
The surface is ribbed to provide a longer leakage path yet is smooth and easily washed free of
salt and dust deposits. Fittings are of stainless steel and a weatherproof cap is provided for the
small insulator to protect the external connection.
Important Factors
For maximum protection from water leakage, the small insulator weatherproof cap should be
fitted with a silicone rubber sealant before being pushed on. Sealant should also be smeared
around the insulator mounting hole before fitting the insulator. Only neutral cure silicone
sealants should be used. Other types may corrode metal fixtures.

Extra Large Feedthrough
High efficiency insulation for HF marine communications
The Extra Large Feedthrough Insulator provides high quality protection for HF antenna feed line
on marine vessels where cable needs to be passed through decks and bulkheads. It is designed
for high power installations demanding high breakdown or flashover resistance and fits decks up
to 114mm (4.5 in) thick.
Construction is from high strength, low loss polypropylene. The surface is ribb ed to provide a
longer leakage path yet is smooth and easily washed free of salt and dust deposits. Fittings are
of stainless steel and lugs provide the external connections.
Mounting is simplified by a flange mount together with “O” ring seal, enabling one man
installation from one side of the deck. The insulator body may be reversed to facilitate a wide
range of deck or bulkhead thicknesses.

Long Wire Insulators
For land and marine long wire type antennas
Constructed from high strength, low loss polypropylene, long wire
insulators have a multi ribbed surface to provide a long electrical
leakage path.
Connection is provided by large stainless steel “D” shackles at each end.
Polypropylene is an excellent dielectric. Its dissipation factor and
dielectric constant remain low over a wide range of frequencies and
temperatures. Volume resistivity is high and this, together with its
extremely low water absorption, makes it an ideal material for wire
antenna insulators.
Power capability is 30,000 volts with a tensile strength of 1100 kg (242 0
lbs) minimum.
Important Factors
As a further guard against leakage, long wire insulators are polished with
a silicone grease compound. To ensure their integrity over long periods
of use, we recommend that this process be repeated as the opportunity
arises.

HF Mobile, Base Station and Masts
M O O N R A K E R
Type AT230
Automatic tuning antenna system
for multi-frequency HF radio mobile and base station communications
Designed to provide automatic microprocessor controlled continuous tuning from 2 to 30 MHz from
the transceiver without the use of an ante nna tuning unit (ATU).
The Moonraker Type AT230 Auto Tune antenna system is comprised of a 2.55m whip (8.4ft)
together with the AT104 antenna control unit (ACU). Typical tuning time for one channel
frequency to another is 1 to 2 seconds with maximum time dep endent upon channel
separation. NV IS (near vertical incidence skywave) communications is achieved by pulling
the top whip section of the antenna down to a near horizontal position and securing with a
non conductive material.
The system is fully automatic and on installation no further tuning or technician
programming is required. It is robust, reliable and extremely rugged and has passed
extensive testing in off road remote conditions, including tropical jungles and arid
environments, as well as populated areas. The whip may be mounted low down on the
vehicle behind the bull bar, on the bumper bar or even on the tow bar, and relatively close
to the body work on forward control vehicles and buses.
Construction is of anodised aluminium alloy tubing with a sealed lower section housing the
control devices, mid section and stainless steel whip top section, which may be easily
removed to facilitate garaging. Centre loading is utilised for maximum performance and a
wide band HF amplifier, located in the ante nna base section and operated via the ACU,
provides enhanced reception of weak signals, particularly when the receiver is in scan
mode.
The ACU, the interface between the antenna and the transceiver, contains the sensor and
controlling electronics. It is compatible with even basic transceiver types that are able to
provide continuous RF for tuning purposes by arranging the ACU to control the transceiver
using a remote PTT line, an external initiate switch and an audible tuning indicator. Fully
automatic operation is possible with more sophisticated transceivers. It can be installed in
any convenient position in the vehicle other than the engine bay or can be used up to 20m
(65.6ft) from the antenna for base station installations.

Type MD/HS
High Strength Low Maintenance VHF Base Station Antenna
A rugged fully radome enclosed VHF base station antenna for professional use in
harsh environments.
The MD-HS antenna was developed in response to user requests for a very low
maintenance omnidirectional VHF base station antenna able to withstand high
wind velocities, together with radial ice build up such as on mountain tops and
highly corrosive atmospheres with cyclonic winds as in the tropics.
The MD/HS meets these criteria.
The antenna is a derivation of our high performance half wave ground
independent Type MD, fully enclosed in a poly vinyl chloride radome with a heavy
duty galvanised mounting pole. The radome minimises the affects of precipitation
static yet provides a low surface tension to reduce ice build up. All metal parts of
at DC earth potential for static discharge with other fittings of nylon and stainless
steel.

Type CMGP
Low Profile Disguise VHF or UHF Radome Enclosed Antenna System
The Moonraker type CMGP is designed to provide efficient VHF or UHF communications
where visual impact or covert requirements restrict the use of standard antenna systems.
Shopping centres, hospitals, airports, railway stations and hotels are typical locations for
these antennas.
Housed within a disguise radome the antenna closely resembles a standard ceiling/flush
mounted light fitting. Normal colour is white. It blends well with other fittings found in
modern buildings.
The antenna is ground independent and therefore does not require a metal ground
plane/ceiling etc., for correct operation. It is DC grounded for protection from static and
other like forms of interference. It may be supplied tuned to any frequency in the range
with a bandwidth better than 1 MHz (VHF) or 15 MHz (UHF) at the specified frequency.
Mounting is simplified by the extended base flange with positions marked for screw holes
placed equally around its perimeter. Cable entry is via a connector in the base of the
housing, allowing the cable to enter directly through the ceiling behind the base.

durability epoxy based coating, highly resistant to chemical attack, abrasion and the effects
of ozone and ultra-violet radiation.
The vehicle roof or bodywork provides the antenna ground plane. The antenna is mounted
flush to the vehicle roof via a brass plate at either end. Cable entry is via a UHF, N type or
other suitable connector at one end. The connection may be made externally at the side of
the vehicle by overhanging the mounting plate sufficiently, or through the vehicle roof.
The antenna may be supplied tuned to any frequency in the range. Antenna length and
bandwidth vary according to frequency. At standard frequencies 148-175 MHz and 400-512
MHz antenna length is 460mm (18 in).

CEL800 - CEL900
For improved analogue, CDMA or digital cellular
marine mobile and land based telephone communications
CEL800 and CEL 900 are high gain, high strength vertically polarised collinear array antennas,
designed for use in the marine mobile and fixed land environments.
These systems are ideal for fringe area operation being suitable for both inshore
marine and land communications including remote building sites, and temporary
bases. The efficiency of both reception and transmission is improved throughout
the mobile network, especially when operating in fringe areas where signal power
is significantly reduced and fading of signal strength causes communication
difficulties. Signals are transmitted at the required field intensity using less
power, thus significantly reducing drain on the mobile battery. In analogue and
CDMA systems range can also be increased due to high gain characteristics.
Antennas are fully marinised, with a fibreglass radome providing high strength
protection for the radiating element. This together with a stainless steel mounting
tube ensures a high degree of strength and long operational life. It can be
supplied for side or base mounting or with a strong, multi-angled nylon swing
down mount. Five meters of low loss UHF co-axial cable is supplied to connect to
the mobile telephone.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
Antenna Assembly
HF
Screw the top and base sections together. Tighten hard down by HAND, so that it locks
firmly on the taper. Do not use tools. On permanent instal lations use locking compound
such as loctite on screw threads. Note that some grades of Loctite do not allow
disassembly, we suggest 242 grade. Do not use silicone sealant or grease on this joint.
VHF Remove the three self tapping screws fitted to the ba se section of the antenna. Use of a
smear of grease on the bare aluminium before assembly will aid future disassembly.
Insert the antenna into the mounting pole and replace the three self tapping screws.
Mounting
1.
Use the mounts as a template to mark the position of the mounting holes. Minimum
spacing between mounts is 600mm (24 in.)
2.
Drill 6.4mm (1/4 in) holes in the marked position.
3.
Reinforce thin decks with a metal or wooden backing plate to spread the load.
4.
Bolt the mounts into position.
Important Factors
HF
1.
For best results the antenna should be mounted vertically (not sloping).
2.
The length of lead supplied with the antenna should not be exceeded. Longer lead may
be used if necessary, but antenna efficiency may decrease and series capacitance may be
required to tune the higher frequencies.
3.
Keep the lead clear of ship's wiring and other metallic objects and avoid running parallel
to metal decks, etc. with less than 2cm (3/4 in) clearance. We recommend Moonraker stand
off and cable run insulators.
4.
Lead should be run as short and direct as possible between the antenna and equipment.
5.
If using deck feed through insulator, make sure the terminals are protected from salt spray,
otherwise severe loss of power may result due to leakage across the wet insulator.
Moonraker feed through insulators are recommended wherever the lead passes through
the cabin or deck.
6.
Earth leads should be connected directly to the ATU and kept as short as possible.
7.
Copper strip at least 50mm (2 in) wide is recommended for earth lead betw een the ATU
and earth. A Moonraker earth plate should be used on wooden and fibreglass vessels.
8.
If the top section is removed when transporting the vessel on land, make sure you replace
it tightly when using the antenna again.
VHF
1.
The antenna should be mounted clear of nearby metal objects which may affect antenna
tuning, and for best results should be vertical, not sloping.
2.
Note that due to inbuilt static discharge capability, this antenna will exhibit a short circuit
if tested with an ohm meter or DC cir cuit tester.
3.
Allow sufficient free cable for antenna to swingdown.

TV AM/FM DOME
Land Mobile/Shipboard Non-directional TV and FM Radio Reception Antenna System
The Moonraker TV/FM Antenna is a compact active antenna system, designed to provide
improved reception of TV and FM signals in both the VHF and UHF bands for both analogue and
digital transmissions.
The system is truly omnidirectional and features separate VHF and
multiple UHF arrays. These two arrays are suitably coupled via a
built-in diplexer. Reception at UHF frequencies is also optimised
through the ability to receive both horizontally and vertically
polarised signals.
Completely sealed within a low profile ABS plastic radome, foam
filled for complete protection from vibration and the marine
environment, the antenna exhibits minimum pickup from other
shipboard communications equipment and is protected from
lightning static discharge. It may be roof mounted on buses,
camper vans, and the like, providing a low profile, streamlined
and rugged installation. It is supplied with 6 metres of low loss
co-axial cable for connection to a remote control unit. There are
two types of control unit available.
The AM/FM Antenna system has TV and AM/FM receiver outlets and input for a separate AM/BC
receiving antenna for installations where a combined AM/FM receiver is used. The AM/BC signal
is combined with the dome’s FM signal and connected to the AM/FM receiver outlet via the control
unit. A suitable AM antenna is the Moonraker type 15BC/Marine with matching transformer or the
standard AM antenna on vehicles.
The TV/S Antenna is designed for installations where only a TV receiver outlet is required.

Type MRA RX-Transformer
Matching transformer for receiving antennas
The MRA RX-Transformer is a wideband (0.3-30 MHz) impedance transformer, designed for
matching either whip or long wire antennas to the coaxial cable and receiver. It is ideally
suited for 7 metre (23ft) whips (types 23B/3, 23B/3C and 23H/S) and long wire antennas.
antenna
The transformer converts the widely varying antenna impedance to a
constant 50ohms, permitting long or variable lengths of coaxial cable to
be used between the antenna and the receiver. Low loss cable is
recommended for lengths exceeding 40 metres (130 feet).
It is designed primarily for shipboard use, but is equally suitable for land
based systems, to allow location of receiving antennas to be situated as
far as practically possible from transmitting antennas or other high noise
areas, such as power lines.
The antenna is DC grounded via the transformer to prevent static build-up
and the connecting cable is DC isolated to prevent electrolysis. In
addition a gas discharge device is also provided to allow for nearby
lightning strikes.
Electrical connection to the antenna is by way of insulated cable to the
antenna feedpoint and an earth cable connected to ground. Mechanical
mounting is by way of two screws or small bolts through the holes in the
PVC mounting plate. The unit should be fixed near to the feedpoint of the
antenna. The transformer components are housed in an insulated fully
marinised PVC box designed to withstand the harsh marine conditions.
As a further guard against water ingress, the components are completely
encapsulated in a silicone material.

Type HF RXA
Active broadband receiving antenna for LF/MF/HF communications
with single feed or cascading multicoupler
The Moonraker HF RXA antenna system is a compact receiving whip antenna and
integral broadband amplifier with either a multicoupler power supply distribution unit
or a single channel power supply unit, where only one feed is required. The system is
suitable for use in buildings such as hotels, motels, schools and broadcast stations for
off air monitors. Being fully marinised, it is also eminently suitable for shipboard and
offshore oil rig installations for distribution to receivers, fax machines, crew quarters
and the like.
The multicoupler power supply has five separate isolated outputs. For installations
requiring a greater number additional units may be cascaded in multiples of four
outlets (ie 5, 9, 13, 17...). In its single channel configuration it is also suitable for
amateur DX enthusiasts or anywhere that enhanced reception is required.
A stud on the side of the antenna permits connection of another wire antenna to utilise
the HF RXA amplification system improving reception in weak signal areas. With
horizontally erected wire antennas, this also gives the added advantage of providing
horizontally polarised reception if required. The stud is provided as a connection point
only and is not intended to be used as a strain relief.

Type BC Loop
For directional MF broadcast reception
Designed as a high efficiency receiving antenna for the MF Broadcast Band (530-1650
KHz), where directional reception and electrostatic screening can be used to advantage.
Moonraker
Compact and unobtrusive, the BC Loop does not detract
from the environment and is well suited to school, hospital,
motel, betting shop and oil rig applications. It is
constructed from marine grade aluminium alloy tubing,
coated with black PVC, and has a ABS plastic tuning box
and galvanised iron mounting tube. No maintenance is
required.
The BC Loop has a broad maximum signal pickup pattern
in the plane of the loop and two sharp deep nulls broadside
to the loop. The loop pickup pattern may be used to
improve weak signals in the presence of strong local
signals or to null out noise interference. The electrostatic
screening of the loop ensures minimum interference from
nearby objects and a symmetrical pattern.
The antenna may be easily tuned on site to the station
required. It is not suitable for multi-frequency or
broadband reception.

Type LPU
MF to HF Lightning Protection Unit
for marine and land based antenna systems
The Moonraker LPU is a horn gap overvoltage lightning protection system designed to be
placed in MF/HF open wire antenna feeders. It gives an easy path to earth for high voltage
static charges, such as those induced in the antenna system by lightning induction and other
electromagnetic disturbances. When used with the CSS Coaxial Surge Suppressor, the range
is extended to cover all frequencies from MF to 2 GHz.
The solid copper, nickel plated horns are mounted upon special ribbed high voltage
insulators which facilitate easy horn gap adjustment. The device is completely enclosed in
an IP56 rated (weatherproof) cast aluminium housing, finished with a high durability epoxy
based coating, highly resistant to chemical attack, abrasion and the effects of ozone and
ultra violet radiation. It is designed to be back mounted externally, close to the antenna feed
point. The LPU metal housing ensures it is intrinsically safe from fire and explosion.
The unit exhibits low capacitance to earth in order to cause minimal effect upon antenna
tuning. As most antenna tuning units (ATUs) provide little resistance to high reverse
voltages, we also recommend that a Coaxial Surge Suppressor be fitted in the 50Ω coaxial
cable between the ATU and the transmitter for HF installations.

Type CSS
RF Coaxial Surge Suppressor
Radio transmitters, receivers, high frequency LANs and all high frequency cable systems require
protection from transient over voltage due to lightning strikes causing direct induction or potential
differences due to earth potential rise caused by spikes to buildings and towers.
Transient over voltage appearing between the inner conductor of the coaxial cable and its screen
can directly damage receiver and line driver chips of communications equipment connected via
coaxial cables.
The coaxial cable surge protectors contain fast response gas filled arrestors to provide low let
through voltage for fast rise time transients. The use of low capacitance gas filled arrestors ensures
operation at high frequencies with low insertion loss. The coaxial cable protector consists of a fast
acting gas filled arrestor enclosed in an in line mounting with coaxial connectors on either end.
The device is configured to minimise circuit capacitance and present a 50 Ω characteristic
impedance so that performance up to 2GHz is assured. Standard models provide protection for
receivers and transmitters up to a 1kW power level. Models for higher power levels are readily
available. A range of connectors is av ailable
Installation is easily effected by connecting the protector in the coaxial line as close to the
equipment to be protected as is practical. The essential aim of these protectors is to provide
electrical clamping between the inner and outer conductors of coaxial cables. Normal precautions
such as earthing coaxial cable sheaths at building points of entry is still vitally important. The N
bulkhead models are specifically designed to be mounted at cable entry points. The bulkhead
mount allows a secure earth connection to the cabl e entry plate and provides a convenient cable
termination point. This is the preferred method of installation.

Type LPS
Lightning Protection Grounding Rod
Moonraker LPS Rods provide a low impedance path for lightning strikes to ground. They are
equally suitable for protecting a large rooftop area of a building or for shipboard use when
strategically placed around the upper perimeter of the area to be protected.
Lightning tends to take the path of least impedance (resistance and inductance).
The LPS keeps this impedance to a minimum by the use of tempered marine grade
aluminium tube which provides a large low loss surface area minimising the skin
effect. Combined with this lowering of inductance from skin effect is the inherent
low resistance of aluminium to provide an overall low impedance path. This type of
construction keeps the overall weight low, important in modern ship design. The
LPS also features a stainless steel tip sharpened to increase the intercept capability
of the lightning leader in the charged field below a thunderstorm.
Mounting is via a cast aluminium alloy base flange and support tube integrally
connected to the LPS Rod. A stainless steel stud provides direct electrical
connection to the earth system or to the metal deck or superstructure of a ship.
The base and the rod are fully protected by a high durability epoxy based coating
resistant to chemical attack, abrasion and the effects of ozone and ultra-violet
radiation.
For ease of transport, the LPS is supplied in two slip together sections, complete
with special jointing shroud and conducting grease sealing kit. Standard colour is
low reflecting APO grey.

Type DCL/ACL
DC and AC Line Lightning Protection for vessels at sea
Lightning generated transients or overvoltages appearing across DC or AC cables and between
them and earth are likely to be damaging to connected equipment. DC and AC external cables
feeding navigation lights, wind speed and direction indicators, etc., can also carry these
transient over voltages via the ships DC or AC wiring to other instruments and electronic devices
such as chart plotters, computers, radios and the like, to cause damage.
Moonraker DCL/ACL line protectors provide high quality protection from these potentially
damaging transients by clamping the voltage and conducting surges safely to ground. The use
of solid-state transient clamping devices connected between each cable and earth, ensures
virtually instantaneous protection is achieved. With a rating of 10 amps continuous current, a
single DCL or ACL protector will, for instance, support the navigation lights in. For higher
current drain two units should be used.
The protectors should be fitted at the point of entry of the cables to the interior of the vessel.
Connection in the type DC or type AC cable is via sealed cable glands and internal screw
terminals. The lid of the housing is fitted with an O ring seal. The housing is mounted via two
bolts (not supplied) through the mounting plate.
The protectors are housed in safe all metal enclosures so that they are intrinsically safe. In the
event of a prolonged overvoltage they will not catch fire or explode. The housing is constructed
from cast aluminium, being finished with a high durability epoxy based coating, highly resistant
to chemical attack, abrasion and the effects of ozone and ultra-violet radiation, and sealed to
IP65 rating for waterproofing.
