Mountain biking in an unspoilt area between olive trees and
aromatic herbs, between rough mountains and deep valleys,
between sheep and goats, to distant mountain villages and
deserted beaches, to archeological sites and other tourist attractions. Every trail offers the possibility of a fresh dive in the
sea from a remote beach and of a bite to eat or a cool drink
in a hidden village where time has really come to a standstill.
You will invariably be welcomed there with a heartfelt “jasou”
or “jasas” because hospitality is not an idle word. The area
is genuinely Greek, the weather is always fantastic, no mass
tourism or crowds here, no big holiday resorts.
Crete has to be felt and experienced, here you can combine
off-road mountain biking with a real holiday.
Who goes?
Our Freak Mountain Bike Trips are open to recreational, sporty and trained mountain bikers. You can choose to explore
quiet parts of east Crete at your leisure or opt for more extreme trails in the rugged mountains.
Are you interested in a Group package? Then Jan will very
eagerly organize a very special trip for you that delivers the
right level of difficulty and includes two-or-more day tracks
if you wish.
Will you be bringing your family? No problem! Non-cyclists
will be able to enjoy the sea, the sun, the beach and the
peaceful pool at our Castri Village Hotel. They can visit the
many nearby attractions (archeological sites, Kato Zakros,
Vai, deserted beaches…) or walk the many gorges of the area.
Mountain Bike Trails
You can choose between various mountain bike trails that range from easy-going to technically and physically demanding,
from short to long-distance, from cross-country to all-mountain. You can opt for a carefully mapped and GPS-guided route on your own or you can take part in well-organized group
day trips under professional guidance. There is something for
everyone at the Freak Mountain Bike Centre.
Mountain Bike Hire
You will be riding brand new BMC mountain bikes and you will
have the choice between standard and expert bikes. There will
be no stress because of gears getting stuck or brakes not working properly: the bikes are serviced by our mechanic every
day. You send us your personal measurements and a perfectly
fitted bike will be put aside for you. The bikes come with flat
pedals but you can have your own pedals fitted. And especially
for the ladies we have a range of women’s specific mountain
bike saddles available!
Helmets are compulsory. A few helmets are available but we
would recommend you bringing your own helmet.
The Weather
The most southerly island in Europe is only at about 175km
from Africa. That is why it is blessed with a very mild climate. East Crete is the sunniest and driest part of the island
with no less than 320 days of sunshine per year.

It is always possible to extend your stay or to combine it
with a surfing holiday at the Freak Surf Station.
Castri Village Hotel
Our home base is Castri Village Hotel in Palekastro, where
the mountain bikers are staying and where all trips begin.
It is a small-scale, pleasant and quietly located hotel on
Kouremenos Hill, at about 300m from one of the most
beautiful beaches in eastern Crete.
The flats lie scattered on the hill in small Cretan
houses. They all have a terrace with a spectacular view on
Kouremenos Bay and Castri Hill. Breakfast is served next to
the pool. In the evenings you can sit and talk over your “heroic
exploits” of the day at the bar, also offering a great view of the
bay. There are worse places to stay ... Close to Paradise !
Restaurants and bars
At Palekastro village, which is about 2.5 km from the hotel,
there is a friendly Greek atmosphere. For the evenings you
can find a variety of restaurants there, all serving typical, local
food at very reasonable prices. You can also enjoy an “à la carte” meal at the hotel.
GENERAL infoRMATION
Getting there
Palekastro is situated in the most Eastern part of Crete. Heraklion airport is about 2 hours away from Palekastro and
covers almost all the major airlines. Sitia airport is a small
community airport situated at only 19 km. There are buses and
taxis from Heraklion and Sitia but you will probably be much
better off with your own transport. Taxi prices from and to Heraklion easily cover the price of 1 week car hire.
