The winner is trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias, who said
afterwards: “She had a hard first part of the season, so we
gave her a two-month break and started to prepare her for
the Arc. Soft ground is very important to her, but Olivier
made the difference. I hoped she might get a place and
obviously this is much better.
“It’s a big day for me to have all my family with me. It’s
my third runner in the Arc, but the first that I’ve had with a
chance. To be honest, I think the fillies are better than the
colts and the older horses are better than the three-yearolds.”
Christophe Soumillon, rider of Orfevre, said, “It’s sad
because he’s got huge potential but I’ve got no regrets.
Once I had the lead, no-one could have imagined that
we’d be beaten. The horse’s overconfidence defeated him
and 50 metres from the line, I saw I’d have difficulty
getting him going again.
“He has what it takes to win the Arc; he’s the best horse
I’ve ever ridden. I hope he’ll run against Frankel in the
Champion Stakes or else in the Japan Cup.”
O’Brien said of Camelot, after saying again that the colt
was the best he’d ever trained and that he would stay in
training at four, “It was very sporting of the lads to let him
run but he wants fast ground. Joseph has always said he
is a better horse on quicker ground and it’s been a long,
hard season. He’s also come back minus two or three
shoes. He’s something for us to look forward to next
season, as he will remain in training. Hopefully he will have
a good winter and he could be something unbelievable
next year.
“As far as St Nicholas Abbey is concerned, he will now
go to Santa Anita for another crack at the Breeders’ Cup.”

SOLEMIA PIPS ORFEVRE
IN ARC THRILLER
There was a large Japanese crowd at Longchamp hoping
to cheer home their latest superstar Orfevre (Stay Gold)
in the Gr.1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and they looked like
doing just that as he came wide from almost last to first
down the home straight, opening up a three-length lead
over Solemia (Poliglote) and Masterstroke (Monsun) at
the 300m mark. Sadly for the visitors, he tired in the
closing stages on the very testing ground and Solemia,
again having a target to aim for, was galvanised for
another effort by Olivier Peslier and caught him in the last
few strides, winning her first Gr.1 by a neck. Masterstroke
was a gallant third, albeit seven lengths adrift of Orfevre,
and was followed home by the fillies Haya Landa (Lando),
Yellow And Green (Monsun) and Great Heavens
(Galileo). Camelot (Montjeu), who had raced in about
sixth, was never able to get closer and finished seventh.
This was a terrific result for the winner’s owner-breeders
the Wertheimer brothers, who also bred and raced her
dam, the Gr.3 Prix Cleopatre winner Brooklyn’s Dance
(Shirley Heights), whose 13th and last foal she is.
Brooklyn’s Dance is also the third dam of Silasol
(Monsun), who had earlier won the Gr.1 Prix Marcel
Boussac for the same connections.

Solemia has been a consistent filly on the track, with one
win (beating Gr.1 winners Shareta and Siyouma) in a Gr.2
and two in Listed races, as well as third in the recent Gr.1
Prix Vermeille. At 33-1, this victory was certainly a
surprise, but she had proved in the past that she acted on
heavy ground and stayed the trip well.
Her Gr.3-winning dam has produced five other blacktype winners, headed by the Group-winning Sadler’s
Wells brothers Prospect Wells and Prospect Park, and
Listed winners by Halling, Seeking The Gold and Slew
O’Gold. Brooklyn’s Dance is a half-sister to Listed winner
Princesse Dansante (King’s Best), the Listed-placed
Krissante (Kris), dam of Gr.1 winner and sire Okawango
and grandam of Gr.1 Derby winner and sire Authorized,
and to Quest Of Fire, grandam of the dual Gr.1 winner
Quijano. There is further strength in depth in this family, as
the third dam, Green Valley (Val De Loir), produced the
Gr.1 winner and Champion Sire Green Dancer, is the
grandam of Gr.1 winner and sire Alhaarth and the third
dam of Gr.1 2,000 Guineas winner and young sire Makfi.

BRIGHT FUTURE BECKONS
FOR BOUSSAC WINNER SILASOL
French-trained fillies completed a clean sweep of the Gr.1
Prix Marcel Boussac, which produced a brave frontrunning performance by the Wertmeimer brothers’
homebred Silasol. She had broken her maiden when
making all over this course and distance four weeks ago
and held on from her Carlos Laffon-Parias-trained
stablemate Topaze Blanche (Zamindar) and the
supplemented Alterite (Literato), who both made up
ground from the back of the field but were always being
held. The previously unbeaten favourite Peace Burg
(Sageburg) raced against the rails and was never able to
get a clear run, while, of the British runners, Agent Allison
(Dutch Art) was prominent early before fading, and Purr
Along (Mount Nelson), who was found to have come into
season and also lost a shoe during the race, was caught
behind rivals near the back of the field and failed to get
into contention.
Laffon-Parias said afterwards, “Both fillies had shown
decent form in conditions races and shown some ability in
the mornings, but there is very little in the programme
book, so I had to run them both here. It's a great result for
us.”
The winning rider Olivier Peslier said, “She’s been a very
progressive filly and this was a good step forward from
her previous run. The stable is in very good form and the
fresh bit of ground was a big help. When the other horses
came alongside her it made her go on again.”
Silasol is yet another Gr.1 winner by the recently
deceased Monsun and is out of the Gulch mare
Stormina. She was third in the Gr.2 Prix de Sandringham
before continuing her racing career with Todd Pletcher in
the US, winning three times at Stakes level. Stormina is
out of a winning Storm Cat half-sister to yesterday’s Arc
heroine Solemia, as well as to Group winners Prospect
Wells and Prospect Park, and the Listed-winning trio
Brooklyn’s Gold, Gold Dodger and Never Green.

RACING REVIEW
Wizz Kid has looked a smart filly since making a winning
debut in the Listed Prix Yacowlef and has since taken the
scalps of some leading sprinters in the past two runnings
of the Gr.2 Prix du Gros-Chene at Chantilly.
Running in the colours of Maeve Mahony, she was bred
by Ballylinch Stud, who used to stand her multiple Gr.1winning sire Whipper. The sire of Group winners Royal
Bench, Dolled Up and Topeka has stood at Haras du
Mezeray for the past two seasons. The winner’s dam
Lidanski (Soviet Star) ran second in a Listed race in
Ireland and is a half-sister to the Listed scorer Yaa Wayl
(also by Whipper). Lidanski’s three-year-old is the
Lawman colt Mustaheel, who won April’s Listed Prix des
Surenes at Maisons-Laffitte, and the more distant family
includes the Gr.1-winning sprinter and sire Godswalk.
Ballylinch Stud are consigning Lidanski’s yearling
Lawman colt, a full-brother to Mustaheel and Wizz Kid’s
half-brother, as Lot 75 at Book 1 of Tattersalls October
Sale on Tuesday.

OLYMPIC GLORY LANDS
JEAN-LUC LAGARDERE
Olympic Glory (Choisir), who was recently bought
privately by Qatar’s Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani in a
deal brokered by Nicolas de Watrigant of the Mandore
International Agency, was the game winner of the Gr.1 Prix
Jean-Luc Lagardere. The Richard Hannon-trained colt
was patiently ridden by Richard Hughes, waiting for a gap
to appear down the home straight, and the pair got to the
lead 200m from home. The favourite, the filly What A
Name (Mr Greeley), made up a lot of ground from the
back of the field but could never quite catch the colt, who
won by a length and a quarter, with the Kevin Ryan-trained
Indian Jade (Sleeping Indian) hanging on for third.
Winner of the Gr.2 Superlative Stakes and Gr.2 Vintage
Stakes for Julie Wood, Olympic Glory has only met with
defeat once, when outpointed by the unbeaten Dawn
Approach in the Gr.2 Coventry Stakes. He was bred by
Denis McDonnell and was a £65,000 DBS Premier Yearling
Sale purchase by Peter and Ross Doyle. Although his dam
only won a modest Beverly maiden from six starts, his
third dam is the flying filly Amaranda (Bold Lad [Ire]) and
the further family includes Classic winners Teenoso and
Rule Of Law.
WIZZ KID BEATS BRITS TO KEEP
ABBAYE IN FRANCE
The French had only won the Gr.1 Prix de l’Abbaye three
times since Sigy was successful way back in 1978, but
they drew first blood in the opener with the Robert Collettrained filly Wizz Kid (Whipper). Inxile (Fayruz), Hamish
McGonagall (Namid) and Mayson (Invincible Spirit)
were at the front by half way and, after the former faded
out of contention, Mayson gradually got the better of his
older rival, looking like the sure winner 100m from home.
However, the filly, who had been racing against the rail,
was pulled into the clear by Gerald Mosse and pounced in
the final strides, landing the valuable prize by a neck.
John O'Connor of Ballylinch Stud said, “She’s been
unlucky in a couple of the big sprints before but it’s nice
everything has gone her way. She was beaten a length
here last year and finished only fifth. She loved the fast
pace and finished off well, so she deserves it. We will
certainly consider going to Ascot on Champions’ Day now
because she doesn’t have to carry a Group One penalty
there.”

RACING REVIEW
Richard Hannon junior, who was representing his father
at Longchamp, said, “He’s done it very well. Sheikh Joaan
bought him three weeks ago and he'll be very pleased.
“It took a lot to go in that ground. He didn’t travel
particularly well but that’s become a habit of his. I’ll have
to speak to the racing manager. We’ll sleep on it but that
might be it for the year.
“I wouldn’t rule the Breeders’ Cup out completely and
he has plenty of options for next year – the Guineas or
coming back here for the French Guineas.”

RIDASIYNA BACK
TO WINNING WAYS IN OPERA
" *
The Aga Khan’s homebred Motivator filly Ridasiyna lost
her unbeaten record last time out when a beaten favourite
in the Gr.2 Prix de la Nonette but she put that record
straight with a convincing victory in the Gr.1 Prix de
l’Opera. The Irish challenger Manieree (Medicean) soon
built up a commanding lead, as is her usual way of
running, and she still led into the straight, chased by Izzi
Top (Pivotal). The latter went past her 400m from home
but could not withstand the late charge of Ridasiyna, who
raced clear in the closing stages to win by three and a half
lengths, while Giofra (Dansili), ridden patiently due to the
testing ground, kept on well to take a close third.
The winning trainer Mikel Delzangles said afterwards,
“She showed she was a good filly in previous races but we
were disappointed with her last run when everything went
wrong. I was worried like everybody is about the ground,
but she didn’t mind it and she was happy because they
went a good pace. We’ve got plenty of races to think
about now but nothing has been decided.”
John Gosden added of the runner-up, the Meon Valley
Stud homebred Izzi Top, “She’s got a lot of speed and got
bogged down in the ground. She can handle this ground
but it’s not her favourite. Today was all about specialists
handling the conditions. There might be one more race for
her but not the Breeders’ Cup. We’ll talk to the owners and
see how we get on.”
Ridasiyna is the first Gr.1 winner for her Derby-winning
sire Motivator, who has produced nine other Stakes
winners, including the Group-winning fillies Clinical,
Pollenator and Skia. Sadly, he has no yearlings to offer at
this year’s sales, having had to miss the 2010 covering
season due to injury, but covered a book of 59 mares in
2011.
Ridasiyna had won her maiden, the Listed Prix
Melisande and Gr.3 Prix Chloe by a combined margin of
almost 13 lengths before only managing fifth at Deauville.
She is out of a winning Darshaan half-sister to Listed
scorer Rajik (Kalanisi) while the family has also produced
the Aga Khan’s Group winners Rayseka, Rafayda, Rayeni
and Rifapour, as well as Gr.1 Prix de l’Opera winner
Kinnaird and her half-brother, this season’s Gr.3 Chester
Vase winner Mickdaam, for other owners.

pacesetting Lethal Force (Dark Angel) down the home
straight but Gordon Lord Byron made a late swoop on his
outside to score by just over a length, while the slowstarting Kendam (Kendargent) made up ground late
home to finish a close third.
The winner, trained by Tom Hogan for owner Morgan
Calahan, has improved out of all recognition this season,
starting with an eleventh place in a Listed race at Cork in
April, while his three latest runs brought a Gr.3 second at
the Curragh, a win in the Listed City of York Stakes and a
close second in the Gr.1 Sprint Cup at Haydock.
This was the first Gr.1 victory for the trainer, the first
Group win for the horse and the first Gr.1 win for the
horse’s sire Byron, a dual Group-winning sprinter who
moved from Dalham Hall Stud to Woodlands Stud in Co
Galway for the 2011 season. The winner is the first foal out
of the unraced Boa Estrela (Intikhab), a half-sister to the
dual Gr.3 winner Cheyenne Star whose dam, Charita
(Lycius), is a Listed-winning half-sister to Italian Gr.2
winner Stanott.
The successful Tipperary-based trainer commented,
“All credit to the owner who has had the guts to stump up
€100,000 to supplement him. Some friends of ours leased
him for the day. He’s been running on this ground all year
in Ireland but we never imagined it would be this deep. We
might take him to Hong Kong for the Mile.”

SWEET CADRAN VICTORY
FOR MOLLY MALONE
The four-year-old Lomitas filly Molly Malone put up the
best performance of her career to win the Gr.1 Prix du
Cadran under Italian jockey Umberto Rispoli. The filly
tracked her Mikel Delzangles stable companion Vadamar
(Dalakhani), who made made most of the running, until
taking over just over 200m from home and kept on in good
style to win by two and a half lengths. High Jinx (High
Chaparral) stayed on to just grab second from the
prominently-ridden Colour Vision (Rainbow Quest).
Molly Malone had won twice up to 2400m in her eight
previous starts and had only once tackled a long trip before,
when second in a conditions race over 3000m at Angers
last autumn. More recently she had finished third in the Gr.3
Pinnacle Stakes at Haydock and ran yesterday’s Arc third
Masterstroke to two and a half lengths when third in the
Gr.2 Grand Prix de Deauville in August.
Owned and bred by Dieter Burkle, she is the best of five
winners out of the placed Law Society mare Moonlight
Melody, whose dam is a winning half-sister to multiple
Gr.1 winner and multiple Champion Sire Monsun.

JEREMY’S ROSEBUD
WINS HER SECOND GR.3
Yellow Rosebud won her second Gr.3 of the season with
a comfortable victory in Tipperary’s Coolmore Stud Home
of Champions Concorde Stakes over seven and a half
furlongs. The Dermot Weld-trained filly sat behind
Custom Cut (Notnowcato) until the home straight, where
she readily pulled clear to score by three lengths from
Lady Wingshot (Lawman), who had beaten her into
second in their two previous meetings but was running on
level terms yesterday.

Owned and bred by the Wertheimer brothers, Solemia is
the thirteenth and final foal of the Gr.3 Prix Cleopatre
victrix and Gr.2 Prix de Royallieu runner-up Brooklyn’s
Dance, six of whom are Stakes winners. To Poliglote’s sire
Sadler’s Wells, Brooklyn’s Dance produced Prospect

Gr.1 Grand Prix de Paris, and Prospect Park, successful
in the Gr.3 Prix du Lys and Gr.3 La Coupe de MaisonsLaffitte and runner-up in the Gr.1 Prix du Jockey Club.
Brooklyn’s Dance also produced the Listed scorers
Brooklyn’s Gold to Seeking The Gold, Gold Dodger to
Slew O’ Gold and Never Green to Halling. In turn, Gold
Dodger is the dam of Danehill Dancer’s Gr.3 C L Weld
Park Stakes victrix Chintz and the grandam of Cadeaux
Genereux’s Listed winner Duplicity, while other daughters
of Brooklyn’s Dance have produced the Listed victrix
Stormina to Gulch and the Pattern-placed Campanillas

Silasol made all, showing the utmost tenacity in the
closing stages to repel her stable companion Topaze
Blanche. The bay thus became the 52nd Graded/Group
winner by the recently deceased German Horse Of The

triumph at the highest level.
Owned and bred by the Wertheimer brothers, Silasol is
the second foal of Stormina, who finished third in the Gr.2
Prix Sandringham before winning three Listed events in
the USA. Stormina has a yearling colt by Invincible Spirit
and foaled a filly by Cape Cross on 25th March. By
Gulch, Stormina is a granddaughter of the Gr.3 Prix
Cleopatre victrix and Gr.2 Prix de Royallieu runner-up
Brooklyn’s Dance, whose 13 foals number six Stakes
winners. To Sadler’s Wells, Brooklyn’s Dance produced
Prospect Wells, winner of the Gr.2 Prix Greffulhe and

Vadamar’s gallant attempt to make all was thwarted as
Molly Malone sped by with 300 metres remaining and
stayed on too strongly for the Newmarket-trained pair of
High Jinx and Colour Vision. The dark bay hails from the
penultimate crop of the 1991 German Horse Of The Year
Lomitas. Germany’s Champion Sire in 2001, Lomitas
produced the Gr.1 winners Belenus, Danedream,
Meridana, Salomina, Shalanaya and Silvano and Haras
de Bougy’s German Champion Juvenile Sumitas.
Molly Malone is the sixth foal of Moonlight Melody,
who has a yearling filly by Bertolini. By Law Society,
Moonlight Melody is out of Morning Queen who, as a
daughter of Konigsstuhl and the Slenderella-Rennen
victrix Mosella, is a full-sister to Monsun. The German
Horse Of The Year of 1993, Monsun won the Gr.1 Europa
Preis twice and the Gr.1 Rheinland Pokal and was German
Champion Sire five times, the latest of his 52
Graded/Group winners and the 15th to triumph at the
highest level being yesterday’s Gr.1 Prix Marcel Boussac
heroine Silasol. Sadly, Monsun died on 11th September
from acute neurological trauma, aged 22. By Dansili out
of Mosella’s daughter Montaria, Piracicaba won last
month’s Listed Prix Joubert.
Interestingly, Lomitas’s dam, the German Champion
Juvenile Filly La Colorada, is bred on similar lines to
Monsun. By Monsun’s damsire Surumu, La Colorada is
out of a daughter of the German Horse Of The Year
Kronzeuge, who is closely related to Monsun’s sire
Konigsstuhl: Kronzeuge’s sire Neckar and dam
Kaiserkrone each appear in Konigsstuhl’s third

Deutsches Derby runner-up who was crowned German

could run again this season.
She is a half-sister to the Listed Balanchine Stakes

The highest rated horse in North America, Wise Dan
enjoyed a lucrative work-out, racing prominently until
cruising past Silver Max and Dominus early in the home
straight. The chesnut hails from the third crop of Dana
Point Farm’s Wiseman’s Ferry, a three-parts-brother to
Bernstein who won the Gr.3 West Virginia Derby and Gr.3
Lone Star Derby at three having finished runner-up to
Johannesburg in the Gr.3 Angelsey Stakes as a juvenile.
Wise Dan is not only one of the most talented
racehorses in North America, but also the most versatile,
having previously won last November’s Gr.1 Clark
Handicap on dirt, last month’s Gr.1 Woodbine Mile, the
Gr.2 Firecracker Handicap and the Gr.2 Fourstardave
Handicap on turf and the Gr.2 Fayette Stakes, Gr.3

Choisir, of whom Choice Bro, Sacred Choice,

Lagardere ace Olympic Glory have triumphed at the
highest level.
Obviously is the second foal of Leala. By Montjeu,
Leala is out of Silver Bubble, whose son Definate
Spectacle (Spectrum) won a Listed event over hurdles at
Aintree. By Silver Hawk out of Strait Lane, Silver Bubble

Gr.3 Prix de la Grotte victrix Silver Lane, the Gr.3 Chester

Stakes-winning offspring feature two whose best victories

and held the late surge of his Gr.2 Pat O’Brien Stakes
conqueror Capital Account by a head. Redefined as a
sprinter this season, Coil hails from the sixth crop of Three
Chimneys Farm’s Point Given. Successful in the Gr.1
Hollywood Futurity as a juvenile, the imposing son of
Thunder Gulch earned the title of US Horse Of The Year at
three when winning six of his seven starts including the Gr.1
Belmont Stakes by over twelve lengths, the Gr.1 Preakness
Stakes, the Gr.1 Haskell Invitational, the Gr.1 Travers Stakes
and the Gr.1 Santa Anita Derby. His 392 named Northern
Hemisphere foals aged three and over number seven
Graded winners, notably the Canadian Triple Tiara heroine
Sealy Hill, the Gr.1 Del Mar Debutante victrix Point Ashley
and the Gr.1 Pacific Classic ace Go Between.
Coil is the second foal of Eversmile, who foaled a colt
by Kitten’s Joy on 25th February. By Theatrical out of
Avasand, Eversmile is a half-sister to Northern Baby’s
1995 US Champion Turf Female Possibly Perfect, whose
six victories at the highest level included the Beverly D
Stakes and Yellow Ribbon Stakes, and to Dixieland
Band’s Gr.3 Horris Hill Stakes victor Makhlab. In turn,
Possibly Perfect produced the Gr.3 Hill Prince Stakes
scorer Promontory Gold to Gone West. By the Belmont
Stakes hero Avatar, Avasand is out of Windy Sands’ Gr.2
Hollywood Oaks victrix Sandy Blue, who produced the
Gr.3 Landaluce Stakes winner Window Seat to Super
