UAlbany Athletics
The University at Albany athletics program continued its success in the 2005-06 athletic year. With
momentum from the 2004-05 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup, which recognizes the strongest athletic program in the America East Conference, the Great Danes captured five conference
championships, two regular-season championships, and saw numerous student-athletes garner individual accolades, including five All-America honorees.
UAlbany won America East championships in men's basketball, men's indoor and outdoor track &
field, women's outdoor track & field, and softball. In addition, the Great Danes were runners-up in
women's indoor track & field and men's lacrosse. Volleyball and men's basketball also won conference regular-season titles, led by America East Conference Player of the Years and All-Americans
Blair Buchanan and Jamar Wilson, respectively.
In addition, men's basketball captured its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth, becoming the first
SUNY Division I team to accomplish that feat. Building on the mantra "Why not us?" the Great Danes
nearly became the first 16-seed to topple a one-seed when they faced the University of Connecticut.
Softball became the first women's program to make back-to-back trips to NCAA post-season play,
while Gered Burns, Joe Greene and Marc Pallozzi became the first Division I track & field All-Americans for the Great Danes.
UAlbany sponsors 19 NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic programs, with 18 teams competing
in the America East Conference. Football, a Division I-AA program, has been an associate member of
the Northeast Conference since 1999.

Scott Marr is in his seventh season
as the University at Albany’s head men’s
lacrosse coach. In 2006, Marr's squad
reached the America East Conference
championship final for the fifth straight
year. His team ranked third nationally in
scoring offense at 11.73 goals per game.
Marr led the Great Danes to their
third consecutive America East Conference Tournament championship and NCAA berth in 2005. UAlbany was sixth nationally
in scoring offense (11.63 goals/game). The Great Danes defeated three top-20 squads during the regular season, including ninth-ranked Massachusetts.
Coach Marr guided the UAlbany program to the school’s
first-ever NCAA Division I Tournament appearance in 2003.
The Great Danes tied a school record for single-season victories with a 10-6 overall won-loss mark. The 2004 squad also
posted 10 victories and finished seventh in the nation in team
scoring before losing to eventual national champion Syracuse
in the NCAA's first round.
Marr produced significant results in his second year at the
helm. UAlbany captured the 2002 America East regular-season title with a 9-7 record. Albany’s six-win improvement from
the previous season was the best one-year turnaround in the
program’s history. He was recognized for his efforts by being
voted America East coach of the year.
Marr served as one of three assistants for the 2006 U.S.
Men's Lacrosse Team that won the silver medal. Syracuse's
John Desko was the U.S. team's head coach. The 2006 International Lacrosse Federation World Championship were held
in London, Ontario from July 13-22.
As an assistant on Dick Edell’s Maryland staff for six years,
Marr served as both assistant coach and offensive coordina-
tor. Maryland made five NCAA Tournament appearances during that period and was the Division I national runner-up in
1995, 1997 and 1998. The Terrapins shattered the school’s
single-season scoring record with 236 goals when the program captured the ‘98 Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season and tournament titles. Maryland’s attack averaged 12.5
goals under Marr’s direction from 1995-2000. All-Americans
Matt Hahn and Andrew Whipple became two of the most storied scorers in school history.
Marr began his coaching career as the University of
Delaware’s offensive coordinator, where he worked with the
school’s all-time scorer Anthony DiMarzo. From 1992-94, the
Blue Hens captured three consecutive North Atlantic Conference championships and earned a top-20 national ranking in
each season. Marr was also an assistant on the United States
team that won the 1999 World Cup.
As a collegiate player at Johns Hopkins University, Marr
was an attackman on the 1987 national championship squad
and the ‘89 national runner-up team. The Blue Jays garnered
four straight NCAA berths during his career. He received a
B.S. in social and behavorial sciences in 1991.
A native of Yorktown, N.Y., Marr was a high school AllAmerican who twice led his team to the state’s semifinal round.
He and his wife, Traci, a special education teacher, have three
children, Kyle, Jordyn and Keeley.

John Svec, who works with UAlbany’s
defense, is in his sixth year as an assistant coach on Scott Marr's staff. The Great

East Conference opponents in regularseason play. In 2004, UAlbany ranked eighth among the NCAA
Division I leaders in man-down percentage (.819).
Svec was a four-year letterman at Loyola College in Maryland from 1997-2001. He was positioned as a defenseman
and as a member of the man-down unit as a junior and senior.
The Greyhounds posted a 10-4 record and reached the 2001
NCAA quarterfinal round. Loyola made four straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including the 1998 Final Four
at Rutgers Stadium. A native of Arnold, Md., Svec earned a
B.A. in elementary education.

ASSISTANT COACH
Chris Kivlen is in his second season
as an assistant coach. Kivlen, one of four
captains on the 2005 UAlbany team,
earned four varsity letters as a
defenseman. He played on three America
East Conference championship teams.
A native of Huntington Station, N.Y., Kivlen was a 16-game
starter on the 2005 UAlbany squad that made its third consecutive NCAA tournament appearance. He had 19 ground balls
and one assist as a senior.
Kivlen earned his B.A. in communication with a minor in
business administration in May 2005. He received all-league
recognition on the scholastic level at Walt Whitman High.
Jan Brown serves as associate athletics director for student-athlete enrichment.
Brown, who joined the UAlbany athletic
staff in 2005, oversees academic support, enrichment, sports medicine, compliance and campus affairs. She also
serves as the department's senior women's administrator.
Brown served as the NCAA's Director of Division II and
Governance Liaison to the Executive Committee and as Assistant Chief of Staff for Division II for nearly six years prior to her
present appointment. In that position, she provided counsel,
advice and leadership to the main governing entities of Division
II intercollegiate athletics, the NCAA President and other NCAA
staff regarding current Division II issues and policies.

RICK COE
DEPUTY ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Rick Coe was elevated to the position
of deputy director of athletics in June
2005. Coe, who has added the role of
University liaison with regard to New York
Giants training camp, manages athletic
business operations. He also has administrative oversight for various sports programs and has been a
key planner in the master plan for the athletic and recreational
complex and turf field project.
A native of New Cumberland, W.Va., Coe was previously an
independent consultant in the financial planning and insurance
industry. He administered all business and fiscal affairs and
served as chief financial officer for American University's department of athletics from 1989-2000. He was also a member
of the NCAA self-study steering committee.

TONY TULLOCK
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
Tony Tullock is in his seventh year as
strength and conditioning coach. He supervises UAlbany's 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program. Tullock was previously assistant strength coach at Colgate
University for two years. A certified strength
and conditioning specialist, Tullock was a graduate assistant at
the University of Massachusetts.
JAY GEIGER
HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER
Jay Geiger was named head athletic
trainer in October 2006. He is responsible
for all aspects of the sports medicine program, including preventive training, injury
rehabilitation and nutrition counseling.
Geiger supervises an athletic training staff
of four assistants, one graduate assistant and several volunteers. He previously served as assistant athletics director and
head trainer at the College of Saint Rose since 1996.
WAYNE BRIDGEMAN
COMPLIANCE
Charlie Voelker is in his second year
as associate director of athletics for external affairs. He came to the UAlbany athletic department in the summer of 2003.
Voelker directs the department's marketing and corporate sales division, plus
oversees media relations and ticket operations.
Voelker previously worked for two minor league baseball
organizations. He served as director of player personnel for the
Berkshire Black Bears, and was vice president and general
manager of the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs. He was named
Northern League General Manager of the Year twice.
Wayne Bridgeman was appointed
assistant athletics director for compliance
in August 2006. He spent the last two
years at New Mexico State University
where he was director fo athletic compliance and eligibility. Bridgeman was responsible for all compliance issues ranging from NCAA and
conference interpretations to the Academic Progress Rate
(APR). He reported to the school's board of regents.

After returning just three starters for
the 2006 season, the Great Danes
developed into a team that made its
fifth consecutive appearance in the
America East Conference tournament
championship. Now the challenge will
be to take those lessons learned and
improve upon last year's progress.
"Last year's team took a step in the
right direction in terms of competing at
the national level," said UAlbany coach
Scott Marr, who has guided the
program to three NCAA berths during
his six seasons at the helm. "We
learned from several close losses and
realize that discipline and conditioning
cost us an NCAA at-large spot."
The Great Danes, who went 8-7
overall with a win over national runnerup Massachusetts, but dropped four
games by two goals or less, have all
but one starter back to go up against a
traditionally tough schedule that
features national powers Johns
Hopkins and Syracuse.
"Our goal is to increase our offensive production by winning more faceoffs and making better decisions," Marr
offers. "Our defensive personnel now
have a full year under their belt. They
just need to improve their communication and understand our packages and
how we switch defenses."

talented on offense with five scorers
returning with 20-plus points. UAlbany
was among the NCAA leaders in
scoring at 11.73 goals per game.
Frank Resetarits, a three-time allconference selection, led the nation in
Jordan Levine set the program's Division
I record with 88 ground balls last season.

scoring with a 4.27 scoring average.
Resetarits, who had 45 goals and 19
assists, had four or more points against
11 opponents. He has produced 45plus points in three straight seasons.
Merrick Thomson, who along with
Resetarits, is a preseason honorable
mention All-American, added 31 goals
and 11 assists last year. Thomson, a
three-time All-America East attacker, is
the school's career leader with 132
goals. A left-hander from Ontario, he
keys the nation's fourth-ranked offense.
"Frank and Merrick are good,
positive leaders who do things the right
way to win games," Marr says. "They
take pride in having the opportunity to
establish the program in the America
East Conference and at the next level."
Sophomore Corey Small (20 goals,
5 assists) and junior Derek Dale (14
goals, 6 assists) are coming off
productive campaigns. Small, who
was a fixture on the man-up unit with
his low-to-high shooting motion, was
one of the nation's top freshman
scorers. Dale, a speedy midifielder,
looked like a more confident player.
UAlbany may have its best group of
midfielders since the program upgraded to Division I. Jordan Levine, a
first-team all-conference pick who
covers a lot of ground in a short period
of time, ranked eighth nationally in
ground balls with 88. Steve and Mike
Ammann, a pair of juniors, combined
for seven goals and 16 assists.
Matthew Green, who also started
on defense last year after missing the
previous season with an injury,
bolsters the midfield. Green, who has
26 career goals, was a second-team
all-league choice last season. Eric
Wolf, a senior who has played in 44
games as a collegian, can also play
multiple positions.
Sophomore John Alpizar (4 goals,

named to the A-East championship alltournament team. Tyler Endres (32
ground balls) made 15 appearances
as a defensive midfielder.
Walk-on Dan Barnes, a starting
linebacker on the UAlbany football
team, brought an aggressive style to
the face-off circle. He won 139 of 294
draws for a .473 percentage and was
voted to the A-East all-rookie team.
"This is the deepest midifield that
we have had," Marr states. "They can
play both ways and create in transition
with our up-and-out, fastbreak style.
(Jordan) Levine has a nose for the ball
with a quick first step. He's on it before
other players can react."
Merrick Thomson was voted to the Inside
Lacrosse preseason All-America squad.
Goalkeeper Brett Queener, who
led Herkimer County Community
College to the 2005 national title,
earned first-team All-America East
recognition in his first season with the
UAlbany program. Queener led the
conference in saves per game (12.13)
and posted a .547 save percentage.
Dan McKeon, who made seven
appearances as a true freshman, will
also see time between the pipes.
"Brett has bought into the team
system," Marr says about Queener,
who made double-figure saves against
11 opponents. "He needs to keep
improving as a stopper by making the
easy save along with the spectacular.
He adds another dimension with his
ability to start our transition game."
Craig McDonald and Tom Trapani
lead a group of defensemen who
played together as a unit for the first
time last year. McDonald, a secondteam All-America East defender, has
takeaway ability coupled with good
clearing skills. He was third on the
team with 38 ground balls. Trapani, a
two-time team captain, has played in
44 games over the last three seasons.
Garrett Pedley, a 6'3" sophomore,
started 12 games in his first season of
competition. He was named to the
America East all-rookie unit. Mark
Phelan, another sophomore, appeared
in 13 contests on defense. Liam
Gleason (6'4") and Greg Shondel (6'2")
are vying for more playing time. Chris
Schongar, who is also positioned at
long-stick midfielder, totaled 37 ground
balls as a freshman.
"This team is in a position to make
something happen, says Marr, who
was a U.S. Team assistant at the 2006
World Championship. "They have
great energy and the attitude is good."

What is a Great Dane?
The University at Albany adopted the
nickname "Great Danes" in the spring of
1965. UAlbany's mascot was founded in
a contest on campus for a $25 savings
bond. The judging committee made the
choice noting, "The Great Dane is noted
for its grandeur, its alertness, and its intelligence. It is an animal whose prowess and strength are easily
recognizable and readily admired." Contest winner Kathy Earle
explained the Great Dane was renowned for its "size, weight,
strength, character, courage, speed, and stamina."
In the 1960s, UAlbany grew from a college for teachers to
a top research university. The old school mascot, "Pierre the
Pedguin," representing the Pedagogues, seemed inappropriate as the University's mascot and nickname.
College: First season with UAlbany program after transferring
from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute ... appeared in 31 games
over the last two years for the Red Hawks ... combined for 11
goals, six assists and 32 ground balls ... Personal: Major is

HOME OF UALBANY LACROSSE
John Fallon Field, the home for UAlbany men’s and women’s lacrosse, was completed in the fall of 2005. Fallon, a former UAlbany
student-athlete, and a partner at LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene and
MacRae, LLP in New York City, made a significant contribution to fund
the construction of the all-weather turf field, a Sportexe Momentum
Turf 41 surface. The first phase of the project was coordinated by
UAlbany’s Office of Architecture, Engineering and Construction
Management. The plan was designed by Clough Harbor and Associates LLP. John Fallon Field is adjacent to Alumni Turf Field, which
serves as the home for the school’s field hockey team and as a multiuse recreational field for UAlbany students. Both all-weather fields
are located just south of Indian Quad on campus.

In 2004, UAlbany won both America East tournament games on the road to capture
its second straight championship and advance to the NCAAs against Syracuse.
Paw Prints: Chris Martocchia was selected to play in the 65th Annual
North-South All-Star Game that featured the nation's finest senior
collegiate lacrosse players. Martocchia scored three goals to lead his
team to a 17-6 victory. Martocchia finished his career ranked sixth in
goals (105) and ninth in points (153) on the school's all-time lists.

AMERICA EAST CONFERENCE
Since its modest beginning as a men’s basketball-only conference in 1979, America East has evolved
into one of the most comprehensive NCAA Division I conferences with a commitment to broad-based,
competitive athletics programs, complementing the academic integrity and missions of the member
institutions.
Each of the nine institutions - University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University
of Hartford, University of Maine, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), University of New
Hampshire, Stony Brook University, and University of Vermont - offers a unique blend of academic and athletic
tradition.
Progressive in its approach to its more than 3,500 student-athletes, America East recognizes champions
in each of its 22 sports: men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s and women’s golf, men’s
and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s soccer, softball,
men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball.
America East also conducts the nation’s most comprehensive academic recognition program for student-athletes. More than 1,800 studentathletes with grade-point averages of 3.0 or better were honored in 2005-06 alone.
With a geographic footprint covering the Mid-Atlantic to Northeast regions of the United States, America East has a population base of more than
50 million people and nearly 30 million television homes. America East member institutions include more than 106,000 students on the nine campuses
and boast nearly one million living alumni.
America East enters its 19th year of all-sports championship competition on the heels of one of the most successful seasons in history as four
of its 10 team sport champions won at least one game in the NCAA Championship. Hartford advanced in the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship
with a 64-58 upset win over Temple in the first round. Albany's men's basketball team earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA Championship by capturing
the league's regular-season and tournament championships.
America East institutions boasted eight Academic All-Americans in 2005-06 while another 30 were named All-District. UAlbany's Stephan Hall
was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Men's Soccer Team as selected by CoSIDA. The conference also honored
a top-scholar athlete in each of its 22 championship sports. More than 1,800 of America East’s 3,500 student-athletes were named to the Academic
Honor Roll after receiving grade-point averages of 3.0 or better. Included in that total were 757 student-athletes who earned a 3.5 or better.
UMBC won its first America East Men's Lacrosse Championship in 2006 by defeating Albany in the final. The Retrievers received the conference's
automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament . Brendan Mundorf, who had five goals and one assist, was named the championship's most outstanding
player. Past America East men's lacrosse champions are: Delaware (1994), Hofstra (1995), Hofstra (1996), Hofstra (1997), Hofstra (1998),
Delaware (1999), Hofstra (2000), Towson (2001), Stony Brook (2002), Albany (2003), Albany (2004), Albany (2005) and UMBC (2006).

Lee McElroy, Vice President & Director of Athletics
Dr. Lee A. McElroy Jr. is in his seventh year as the
University at Albany's Vice President and Director of
Athletics. McElroy, who provides leadership for UAlbany’s
NCAA Division I 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program for men and women and is a member of the
University's Executive Committee, spearheaded a successful search for a broad-based athletic conference
when the University accepted an invitation to join the
America East Conference in the 2001-02 academic year.
During his tenure, UAlbany has won 17 conference
championships and made NCAA appearances in men's
basketball, men's lacrosse, softball, women's volleyball, and men's and women's
track and field. In 2004-05, the Great Danes were awarded the Commissioner's
Cup as the America East Conference's top athletic program. McElroy has also
worked to renew the men's and women's basketball crosstown rivalry with Siena
College, led the development of a master plan to upgrade the school's athletic and
recreational complex, plus has energized athletic development efforts.
McElroy, who serves as president of the National Association of Collegiate
Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in 2006-07, was also a key figure as the University
successfully completed the NCAA's second cycle of Division I athletics certification. He was honored with the 2004 General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding
Athletic Director Award by the All-American Football Foundation.
McElroy, who played football at UCLA in the late 1960s, was previously
American University’s director of athletics for four years. American, a Division I
school in Washington, D.C., competed in the Colonial Athletic Association. In that
period, the AU athletic department upgraded to 19 sports, expanded corporate
partners by 400 percent, and planned capital projects for a fitness facility,
intramural field and soccer stadium. McElroy founded the Eagle Club, the
department’s fundraising arm, and developed a program rated as one of the top
ten in the nation in its compliance with NCAA gender equity requirements.
Dr. McElroy served as president of the America East Conference Executive
Committee in the 2003-04 academic year, and has gained national prominence
for his roles with numerous professional organizations and NCAA committees. He
served a three-year term on the NCAA Division I Management Council as one of
four at-large representatives from I-AA or I-AAA conferences. McElroy previously
worked on four prestigious NCAA Committees: Athletics Certification, Financial
Aid, Degree Completion Program, and the NCAA Special Committee on Agents
and Amateurism.
In 1998, McElroy was named to the NACDA Executive Committee for the
University Division, and chair of the Sears Directors Cup Committee. The Sears
Directors Cup is the only national award and academic scholarship program to
recognize all NCAA and NAIA championship sports for women and men.
From 1989-96, McElroy was the director of athletics at California State University-Sacramento. He led the program’s transition from Division II to Division I and
engineered a move to the Big Sky and Big West conferences. He also implemented a strategic plan that developed a corporate partners plan, created an
effective fundraising and marketing program, redesigned academic support
services, improved the athletic facilities complex, and provided for campus and
community outreach programs.
McElroy also worked at the University of Houston from 1981 to 1988 as an
assistant director of men’s and women’s sports and as an associate director of
athletics, and for one year as the director of athletics at The University of the District
of Columbia. Before joining the Houston staff, he taught in the public school
systems of Santa Monica, California and Beaumont, Texas, and was a high school
principal in Beaumont.
Along with his duties for the NCAA, McElroy has testified before congressional
committees on issues in college athletics, such as gender equity, the welfare of
the minority student-athlete, and the academic/athletic balance. McElroy serves
on the boards of the National Consortium of Academics and Sports, Athletic
Business magazine, and the National Minority Golf Association. He is also a fellow
at the Institute of Ethics and Sportsmanship at the University of Rhode Island.
McElroy, who resides with his wife, Karen, in Slingerlands, earned his B.S. in
political science and history from UCLA in 1970. He later received a M.Ed. from
the University of Southern California, and an Ed.D. from the University of Houston.

ALBANY
NEW YORK’S CAPITAL
Albany, the state capital of New York, offers something for everyone, and is the center of a region remarkable
for its natural and cultural resources. The city, first settled
by the Dutch in 1624, was given its charter in 1686 by
Governer Thomas Dongan and became the Capital of
State of New York in 179.
The Capital District area represents the cities of
Albany, Schenectady and Troy, and has a population of
approximately 875,000. Within a short distance are the
Berkshires, the Catskills and the Adirondacks, the largest
wilderness area east of the Mississippi River.
Major ski areas such as Killington, Gore, Hunter,
Bromley, Stratton and Mt. Snow are within easy commuting distance. Saratoga Springs, 25 miles to the north, is
internationally known as a sports, concert, and cultural
center, and features outstanding thoroughbred and harness racing at Saratoga Race Track.
Geographically, the city of Albany is only 150 miles
from New York City, 175 miles from Boston, and 225 miles
from Montreal in Canada. The New York State Thruway
and two major interstate highways intersect one mile from
the main campus. Bus, rail, and air terminals are all within
ten minutes of the University.
Designated an All-America City by the National Civic
League in 1991, Albany is dominated by the Nelson A.
Rockefeller Empire State Plaza, a billion-dollar complex. It
includes government buildings, a convention center, the
state museum, and the state library.
Directly across from the Plaza stands the State

Capitol Building. This majestic five-story structure, in
existence since 1879, houses the governor's offices and
the chambers of the State Senate and Assembly.
The Plaza has spurred the renovation of a large portion
of historic downtown Albany. You will enjoy exploring the
cosmopolitan area of old townhouses, boutiques and
restaurants, or attending major sports, entertainment or
cultural events at the Times Union Center, the host site for
the 2001 NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Frozen Four, 2002
NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, and 2003
NCAA Division I Men's Basketball East Regional.
This $65.4 million arena seats approximately 17,500
with a 1,700-car parking facility. Times Union Center hosts
nearly 200 events a year including professional basketball
and hockey games, arena football, rock concerts, trade
shows, and conventions. The arena previously hosted
UAlbany’s spring commencement.
The City of Albany has experienced unprecedented
progress and development during the past fifteen years.
Over $1 billion in economic development projects have
been implemented. The historic link between downtown
Albany and the Hudson River was restored with the opening
of the Hudson River Way Pedestrian Bridge and the
construction of a multi-purpose amphitheatre at the Corning Park. The restoration of the historic Palace Theatre now
provides a venue that complements the Times Union
Center as a host to world class entertainers and cultural
events.
Four major malls and shopping centers, including
Crossgates, Stuyvesant Plaza and Colonie Center, fall
within one mile of campus. Nightlife in Albany is lively with
concerts, movies, theatre, dancing, and just about every
kind of restaurant or eatery you can imagine. Most
attractions or activities are a short walk or accessible
through the local bus system.
The University at Albany today is an internationally recognized public research
university with a broad mission of undergraduate and graduate education, research
and service. More than 17,000 students are enrolled in ten schools and colleges
offering 177 undergraduate, master's and doctoral degree programs.
Outstanding faculty, an innovative curriculum, and student-centered services
create a distinctive learning environment that nurtures student success.
Undergraduates choose from 55 majors in the arts and sciences, business and
accounting, public policy, criminal justice, information science, pre-law and prehealth; approximately 40 percent of undergraduates participate in research with
faculty.
Innovative degree programs with an international focus and more than 300
study-abroad programs prepare students for the global economy. A new Honors College offers high-powered academic
challenges for the best prepared students. Extensive internship opportunities offer real-world experience in New York's
capital and the surrounding region.
The University boasts academic strengths in sociology, demography, education, anthropology, social work, clinical
psychology, creative writing, earth and atmospheric sciences, ethics, public policy, criminal justice and nanoscale
science. According to U.S. News and World Report, many of the University's graduate programs rank among the nation's
best.
Both the UAlbany campus and the region are bustling with extracurricular opportunities. Students participate in
more than 150 student clubs, honor societies, and other campus-related groups, and choose from a busy calendar of
campus events, including spirited Division I athletic competition in 19 sports and a rich array of cultural activities.
Since its founding in 1844, the University has graduated generations of leaders in all fields. Today, more than twothirds of undergraduates go on for advanced degrees, and acceptances to law and medical schools are well above the
national average.
UAlbany has more than 134,000 living alumni, including: Norman E. Snyder Jr., B.S. '83, chief operating officer of
Rheingold Brewing Company and former partner of the South Beach Brewing Company (SoBe); Marcia Brown, B.A.'40,
three-time Caldecott Award-winning children's book author; Tom Clarke, B.A. '73, president of new business ventures,
Nike, Inc.; and Maureen Baginski, B.A. '77, M.A. '79, former director of the FBI Office of Intelligence.
UAlbany, working with governmental and business partners, plays a vital role in the economic development of the
Capital Region and New York State. The University is a major international center for research and development in the
fields of nanosciences and nanoengineering. An economic impact study in 2004 estimated UAlbany's economic impact
as $1.119 billion annually in New York State -- $1.005 billion of that in the Capital Region.

Ave.), which leads right into UAlbany.
From the South: Take the Thruway (I-87) north to Exit 24. After the tollbooths, go onto I-90 east towards Boston to Exit
2 (Washington Ave.) which leads right into UAlbany.
From the East: Take I-90 west (towards Buffalo) to Exit 2 (Fuller Road). Turn left onto Fuller Road then next left at
Washington Ave. UAlbany will be on your right.
From the West: Take the Thruway (I-90) east to Exit 24. After the tollbooths, go onto I-90 east towards Boston to Exit
2 (Washington Ave.), which leads right into UAlbany.
All Directions: Follow University Drive (bearing right/south) one mile to Recreation & Convocation Center parking lot.
