OUR MISSION
The University of Baltimore Foundation was established in 1969 as a
nonstock corporation. The purpose of the foundation is to provide
financial support to the University of Baltimore and to provide
leadership, oversight and guidance to the University’s administration as
it works to advance the mission of the institution. The foundation is a
designated 501c3, and it uses its resources to support various programs
throughout the University, including scholarship initiatives, capital
improvements and academic programming. THE UNIVERSITY OF
BALTIMORE FOUNDATION:
Building Relationships
There is much more to the University of Baltimore
than buildings or banners or its innovative physical
campus in Maryland’s largest urban center. The
heart of UB is the community it has cultivated in
an expanding, thriving area called UB Midtown.
Our connected, vibrant location emphasizes one
of our core values: building the University’s relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni and
the city itself.
There is no doubt that UB adds value to
Baltimore city.
Near the intersection of Charles Street and
Mount Royal Avenue, students gather at local
eateries in sight of the massive cranes and other
construction equipment working on UB’s new
John and Frances Angelos Law Center. In
Baltimore City Public Schools, UB volunteers—
many of them students and alumni—help children
develop a more positive attitude about education
while addressing issues such as chronic truancy.
Alumni gather throughout the area for a wide
variety of events, from networking socials to major
league baseball games, where they reconnect with
the University and with colleagues and friends.
Students and volunteer alumni meet over lunch or
dinner as part of UB’s new alumni relations program SavorUB, through which alumni offer advice
about moving from the classroom into a career
and provide students with an opportunity to build
valuable professional and personal connections.
Each year, the University of Baltimore
Foundation funds programs and projects such as
these—in addition to scholarships, professorships
and other special initiatives that enhance the UB
community, not just on campus but throughout
the region. In doing so, the foundation recognizes
that it owes its accomplishments to its generous
donors—and, in turn, the University owes its
future to those same philanthropic supporters.
Throughout these pages, we highlight a few
of the many relationships that the University of
Baltimore Foundation has helped build during
the past year. As you read these stories, keep in
mind that they are only a small sample of how our
donors’ gifts continue to help UB grow a strong
and vital community.

at an extraordinary rate.”
Dear Friends,
You need only to spend a few minutes in UB
Midtown, whether it’s catching a train in or out of
Penn Station, walking along North Charles Street
or driving down the Jones Falls Expressway, to
recognize the transformation that’s occurring on
the University of Baltimore campus. The signs are
pervasive: cranes, hard hats, bulldozers and cement
mixers. You can actually see UB’s progress, and it’s
happening at an extraordinary rate.
A student apartment building is well on its way
to completion, unfolding seemingly overnight. At
Maryland Avenue and Biddle Street, the 11-story
Varsity at the University of Baltimore will feature
114 studio, two- and four-bedroom apartments.
The project, which requires no University or
University of Baltimore Foundation funding, is
scheduled to be ready for fall 2012.
But we’re not just building buildings; we’re
constructing an identity that reflects the quality
of a UB education, because excellent students and
distinguished faculty deserve equally exemplary
facilities. We’re developing an environment that
encourages our students and scholars to thrive,
both academically and socially. We’re committed
to the notion that meeting their current needs and
anticipating their future needs prepares them to
excel throughout their careers in a rapidly shifting
society—the goal of our community-wide planning
effort, UB21. (Learn more at www.ubalt.edu/ub21.)
And we’re not thinking simply about the 21st
century; by focusing on the way the University
impacts its natural environment, we’re preparing
for the 22nd century and all others to come. The
new John and Frances Angelos Law Center, which
continues to rise on the corner of North Charles
Street and Mount Royal Avenue, boasts technologically advanced, environmentally conscious design
features that will help set green building standards
in the city and on university campuses across
the country.
We know that environmental awareness must
be expansive, and UB’s sustainability initiatives
address nearly every aspect of campus life, from
recycling to roofing to carbon emissions. We’ve
planted flowers, trees and more than 60 trees
along campus sidewalks, beautifying our neighborhood and greening our city. All told, these efforts
will reduce the University’s carbon footprint by
approximately 16 percent. Most importantly, this
increasing awareness extends to the classroom: UB’s
new Environmental Sustainability and Human
Ecology program reflects our continued focus on
our primary mission of preparing students to reach
their professional and personal goals—and then, in
so many cases, to exceed them.
Through UB21 and our other programs and
achievements, we are focusing our efforts, building
on our strengths and encouraging innovation. I
look forward to telling you more about these successes in future communications, and I thank you
for all you do to make this possible.

Dear Friends,
The University of Baltimore Foundation is fortunate to have the generous support of individuals,
foundations and businesses that understand the
level of commitment it takes to provide an exceptional yet accessible education.
As a result of this remarkable commitment,
I had the pleasure of bearing witness as the
University reached several historic milestones in the
five years during which I served as chairman of the
UB Foundation Board of Directors. Student enrollment is at an all-time high, the University has once
again become a four-year institution and its physical presence in midtown Baltimore has expanded
significantly as a result of new construction and
capital improvements on campus.
Even in the midst of such transformative
progress, one key constant remained—and will
continue to remain—unchanged: UB’s commitment to its students. Thanks to the University’s
leadership and staff, in FY 2011 we successfully
raised funds to support important campuswide
initiatives such as scholarship aid and faculty
developments as well as campus improvements.
Although June 30, 2011, marked the end of
my tenure as board chairman, I remain actively
committed to the University of Baltimore. I am
pleased with the foundation’s accomplishments
during the past five years and am confident in its
potential to play an increasingly significant role in
the University’s development.
I am also pleased to welcome Michael L.
Curry, B.S. 77, as the new chair of the University
of Baltimore Foundation. He is engaging and
dynamic and will be a champion for UB. He is
also committed to seeing the University reach new
levels of excellence during his tenure.
On behalf of the entire board, I would like to
thank you for your steadfast support of both the
UB Foundation and the University of Baltimore.

DORINE ANDREWS

Dorine Andrews, D.C.D. ’01, chief information
officer for the Peace Corps, credits the University
of Baltimore for enabling her earlier reinvention
as a midlife career-changer. “I was 52, an active
and successful IT business systems consultant and
business owner,” Andrews says. Intrigued by how
technology was changing the business landscape,
she decided that the time was right to find out if
this trend might open more professional options
for her. UB’s then-new Doctor of Communications
Design program was an ideal fit, and Andrews
spent the next few years discovering just how
business and technology can work together to
forge new frontiers. In 2001, Andrews became the University’s
first D.C.D. recipient. Her doctorate would
subsequently lead to faculty positions, consulting
opportunities and, most importantly, the ability
to understand emerging technologies and their
application to business.
“UB is an important institution for those of us
who never fit the traditional student ‘academic’
model,” she says. “It gives people a chance to
bloom that would not be available in the traditional environment, no matter what our age or

background. UB also has programs that stretch
the edges of normal education. The programs are
practical, innovative and creative; the learning
makes real sense and makes a difference in people’s
lives, whether they are pursuing a business degree
or a fine arts degree.” Andrews says her own
professional experiences are a testament to how
the University’s cutting-edge arts and sciences
programs enable its graduates to launch
rewarding careers.
Andrews remains connected to UB despite her
demanding schedule at the Peace Corps, for which
she oversees the technology systems that support
the agency’s headquarters, nine recruitment offices
and 70 posts worldwide. She’s served in numerous
volunteer positions while consistently supporting
the University of Baltimore Foundation’s Fund for
Excellence. “It’s all about making a difference in
the world we live in every day,” she says.

RICHARD DAVISON

Owner of Mount Royal Management Co.
and longtime UB friend
Richard Davison’s office on Mount Royal Avenue is
just a short walk from the University of Baltimore
campus. As a business owner, Davison has been a
member of the Mount Royal Avenue community
since 1955; he has also served as a member of
the University of Baltimore Foundation Board of
Directors since 1979.
But Davison’s connection to UB began long
before he founded the Mount Royal Management
Co. It began with his father-in-law, Ben Cohen,
a former student at the Baltimore College of
Commerce—which later merged with the
University of Baltimore. Cohen was a Baltimore
entrepreneur and co-owner of Pimlico race course
for 34 years.
In 1995, Davison and his wife, Rosalee (Cohen’s
daughter), endowed the Ben Cohen Scholarship
Fund at UB. “We have always been interested in
helping people get an education,” Davison says.
“What better way to do that than to start a scholarship fund in Ben’s honor at UB?” The endowment
fund generates income that provides scholarships
for undergraduate students enrolled in UB’s
Merrick School of Business.
From his vantage point on Mount Royal
Avenue, Davison has witnessed many forwardthinking changes in the neighborhood and at the
University. “UB has always taken an interest in the
community,” Davison says. As a business neighbor
to both UB and MICA, Davison appreciates that
the two institutions share similar goals for revitalizing midtown. “Collaborations between institutions
are very good for Baltimore,” he says, noting that
by working together, the universities will continue
to build a cohesive community in UB Midtown.
THE FUTURE
B.S. ’64
BUILDING
Robert C. Russel, B.S. ’64, credits the University
of Baltimore with allowing him to complete his
undergraduate degree without giving up his career.
“UB was a good fit for me,” says Russel, president
of R&H Motor Cars Ltd. “It allowed me to work
part time while going to school, and my degree
unquestionably helped me a great deal throughout
my career.” UB’s flexibility in class and activity
scheduling is one of the things Russel says he remembers best about UB; it permitted him to juggle
morning classes and an afternoon work schedule.
While Russel never worked directly in accounting, the subject in which he majored, he says the
entrepreneurial skills he learned at UB nevertheless
benefited him greatly as he helped to expand his
family’s automobile business.
He has been involved since he was 14 in the
business his father established, and he has worked
there for the entirety of his career. Under his
leadership, R&H Motor Cars Ltd. has grown from
being a single new-car franchise to being one of the
largest dealership groups in Maryland. To recognize
his successes, Russel was named the University
of Baltimore’s Distinguished Small Business
Entrepreneur in 2010.
Russel and his wife, Irene, are involved with
many area organizations and have a long history
of supporting philanthropic causes. He recently
has become engaged with his alma mater and now
serves on the University of Baltimore Foundation
Board of Directors. “In the few years that I’ve been
involved with UB, I [have been] impressed with
the incredible job the administration has done to
expand UB’s presence and to revive the neighborhood. UB is heading in a great direction.”

Administration
“I cannot say how honored I felt
when I received the Sylvan and
Isabelle Ribakow Scholarship,”
says Kevin Carpio, an undergraduate student in the Merrick
School of Business. “The scholarship encouraged me because
it meant my hard work was
being noticed.”
Carpio is a business administration/accounting specialization
major who plans to graduate
in spring 2014. He chose UB
because the Merrick School of
Business is recognized by U.S.
News & World Report as offering
one of the country’s best undergraduate business programs.
Another factor in his decision
was UB’s location and flexible
scheduling, which allows Carpio
to maintain his 30-hour-per-
week job and to live at home.
“Because I can commute to
and from UB, I am able to help
my youngest sister, Alicia, with
her homework,” Carpio says,
adding that it’s important to him
not only to help out at home
as needed but also to be a role
model to both of his sisters.
While he readily admits that
taking five classes, working
nearly full time and taking an
active role with his family can
be challenging, Carpio gets
through by keeping his eyes on
his ultimate goal, becoming a
successful CPA.
SAMANTHA MOSELEY
Samantha Moseley,
student, B.A. in
Psychology
Samantha Moseley’s career
goal is to become a child and
adolescent counselor or psychologist, and UB’s undergraduate
Psychology program is the first
step on her professional path.
Moseley selected the program
in UB’s Yale Gordon College of
Arts and Sciences because of its
diverse course selection and its
options for additional studies,
such as participating in research
projects. She is also working
toward a minor in creative
writing, because she finds the
creative nature of the courses
complements psychology’s emphasis on research and statistics.
Moseley is a member of UB’s
Helen P. Denit Honors Program
and, as part of the Federal
Mary Jo Pohlner’s Master of
Public Administration degree
from UB has already resulted
in a promotion at work and,
more importantly, has given her
a focus for her career plans. “I
did not earn my degree just to
place a diploma on my wall,”
says Pohlner, M.P.A. ’11. “I want
to actually use the training I received so that I can be a valuable
asset to a government agency.”
Pohlner is now an administrative analyst in the Dean’s Office
of Academic Administration
at the University of Maryland
School of Medicine, a postgraduation reclassification. In
this new position, she can use
the analytical skills she sharpened during her coursework
at UB; it’s a tough job, but the
challenges don’t faze Pohlner.
She graduated with a 3.975
GPA and earned UB’s 2011
College of Public Affairs Dean’s
Advisory Council Student
Award for Academic Excellence,
presented annually.
“I know I’ve worked hard for
my achievements, but I have to
acknowledge the excellence of
my professors. Without their
ability to convey their knowledge and push me to do my
best, I doubt that my successes
would be at the same level,”
Pohlner says. “The support and
encouragement I received from
them has been invaluable, and
I appreciate it more than I can
ever express.”

Because of her high academic
standing and her demonstrated
financial need, Moseley earned

Foundation’s Jim White
Scholarship for the 2010-11
academic year. “Receiving this
scholarship means that there
are individuals out there who
understand the cost of college
and feel that a student’s primary
focus should be placed on their
academics and not on their
financial situation,” she says.
“While this might sound cliche,
I always wanted to go to law
school and become an attorney,”
says Heather Rice, J.D. ’11.

and research skills while they
participate in interscholastic
competitions. Rice received
the scholarships in recognition
of her demonstrated academic
excellence and her accomplishments, including leadership
positions—like her moot
court team membership—
that she’s held within the
law school community.
“With the help provided
by my scholarships, I have the
privilege of worrying less about
how to pay for law school,” she
says. “It is my hope that one day
I will be able to do the same for
other students.”

HIGHLIGHTS
BACKPACK TO BRIEFCASE PROGRAM
Knowledge that works, that translates from the
classroom into the professional world, is the
hallmark of a University of Baltimore education,
and UB’s Backpack to Briefcase program encourages alumni to help students thrive during that
transition.
The Backpack to Briefcase program brings UB
alumni to campus to provide informational in-class
presentations in which they share their career
experiences and offer advice about life after college.
The program matches alumni with current classes
related to their areas of study and/or their professional fields.
“Backpack to Briefcase gives students a visceral
connection to the workplace,” says Karen Colvin,
B.A. ’95. “Students find that there are career
opportunities beyond what they’ve previously considered.” The program provides students with an
opportunity to meet working professionals, to learn
about the skills needed for career success and to ask
questions of the presenters.
Colvin, who unlike most Backpack to Briefcase
presenters also has served as a UB faculty member,
shared her experiences as a UB student and as
an alumna with two of her sociology classes last
spring. She discussed what students can expect
when they leave campus for the business world and

trade in their well-worn backpacks for a professional briefcase.
Six participating alumni piloted the Backpack
to Briefcase program during UB’s 2006-07
academic year, launching an initiative that has
grown significantly; during the 2010-11 academic
year, 36 alumni connected with 35 classes in the
Yale Gordon College of Arts and Sciences and the
College of Public Affairs.
Alan Weisman, B.S. ’71, M.A. ’91, has made
several presentations as part of the program. “It is a
great opportunity for the students,” says Weisman,
whose presentation focuses on his 41 years of
experience in health care. “I would definitely be a
presenter again.”
Backpack to Briefcase is an easy way for alumni
to stay connected with the University; the time
commitment necessary can be as little as one hour,
but many alumni return frequently, participating at
least once per semester. For students, the program
is a means of understanding more concretely how
their coursework can benefit them in the working
world. Plus, Colvin says, “Backpack to Briefcase
gives students a sense of pride in their degree.”
HELEN P. DENIT HONORS PROGRAM
Internships, study-abroad programs, academic
conferences—students in UB’s Helen P. Denit
Honors Program have opportunities to experience
them all. They also participate in small, themed
courses with fewer lectures and more hours of
discussion and evaluation, and they engage in independent research projects for which they receive
the educational and financial support necessary to
present findings nationally.
Brian Etheridge, director of the honors program,
has made incorporating the program as an integral
part of UB’s four-year undergraduate program his
goal. The benefits to the student participants are
immeasurable, he says. “We provide enhanced educational experiences that students can articulate on
their applications and in interviews. It helps them
stand out,” he explains.
The honors program contributes to UB’s commitment to preparing students for the 21st century
by empowering them with the skills necessary to
thrive in a rapidly changing and increasingly interdependent world. Honors classes are small, fast
paced and focused on learning through discussing
and doing. Students participate in professional and
academic development outside of the classroom
through conferences, internships and study-abroad
experiences as well as through leadership and
service opportunities like last spring’s two-day
alternative spring break, in which students helped
rehabilitate homes in east Baltimore as part of a
Habitat for Humanity project.
In the Helen P. Denit Business Honors Program,
a division of the University-wide honors program,
Merrick School of Business students enroll in
honors sections of required business courses, attend
alumni networking events and participate in field
trips to prospective employers.
The honors program helps UB attract and retain
academically excellent students by offering opportunities they might not find in a typical university
setting. Applicants to the program must have a
cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or greater,
but all students who have a UB GPA of at least
3.3 are encouraged to apply. The program requires
students to complete 21 credits of honors coursework and produce a capstone honors project.
Etheridge says that approximately 200 students
are participating in the program as of the fall
2011 semester.
The Helen P. Denit Honors Program was established through endowment gifts from the Helen
P. Denit Trust in 1993 and in 2000. Income from
these two gifts exclusively supports student activities in the honors program.
HENRY AND RUTH BLAUSTEIN ROSENBERG
CENTER FOR STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
More than100 UB students, faculty members
and staff rolled up their sleeves to paint, plant
and generally create positive change for their
city neighbors during the April 2011 annual UB
Community Service Day, organized by the Henry
and Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Center for Student
Involvement.
The center provides enrichment opportunities for all UB students through a varied calendar
of activities. “We enhance learning by allowing
students to practice what they find in the classroom,” says Anthony Butler, assistant director of
the center. “We play a key role in getting students
more involved with the University.” Projects like
Community Service Day help students recognize
that they are a part of the larger UB and Baltimore
communities.
Other initiatives the center sponsors include
walking tours of Mount Vernon, seminars on
polishing public-speaking skills and certificate programs aimed at developing leadership skills. CSI
also manages student government and the dozens
of special-interest organizations that appeal to
UB’s diverse student body.
The programming is designed for students
simply looking for something to fill a few hours of
leisure time as well as those who want to become
more deeply involved in UB’s campus life. Students
can attend a single event or join one of UB’s active
student organizations.
The center also coordinates the University’s
Leadership UB program, which attracts students
who are focused on developing and honing skills
that can translate to their careers. “These are the
skills that will equip students to succeed in the real
world,” Butler says. “UB is a safe place to try things
out—to run a committee meeting or organize an
event. We try to challenge students to think about
what they are doing, to examine what went right
and what went wrong.”
Support for the Rosenberg Center for Student
Involvement comes from an endowed fund established by the Henry and Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg
Foundation. Recognizing the importance of providing college students with opportunities to build
skills and to develop a commitment to broader
communities, the foundation has made a generous
commitment to ensure annual funding is available
for the center’s programs and initiatives.
