Zumba aerobics new

GUARDIAN NEWS SERVICE
I
AM standing in an empty
nightclub at 9.30 on a
Saturday morning, watching more than 100 women
(and a few shy-looking
men) queue to pay their GBP10
entry fee. Tru Nightclub, in the
city of Brighton on England’s
south coast, still feels a little
warm from the evening before
- like the ghost of last night’s
revelry is still in the venue,
spritzing it with room spray
that smells of youthful sweat
and
pineapple-flavoured
Bacardi Breezer. A sausage
stand, which must sputter
into life on the pavement
outside most evenings, is
parked by the cloakroom,
grease-free and gleaming.
It’s not the obvious place to
take an exercise class.
Only it’s not a “class” it’s a party! I’m at the launch
of Brighton’s monthly Zumba
Party, the brainchild of exmusic industry executive Gillian
Millar and events organiser Sarah
Walker, who discovered the Latino
dance-based aerobics craze a little over a
year ago.
Millar came to it while trying to shift
3st after having her son.
“I lost all the
weight I’d gained during my pregnancy by
doing three Zumba classes a week in
London,” she says. “And I loved it so much
that I decided to train as an instructor when I
moved to Brighton.” Millar and Walker decided to take Zumba’s slogan - “Ditch the workout and join the party” - literally. Both
women were bored with gyms and thought
that taking the class - easy-to-follow
workout routines set to salsa and
merengue music - to a nightclub might
remove the self-consciousness of joining
a health club. “It works because there
are no mirrors,” says Millar. “There’s no
pressure to look a certain way and there
are no fluorescent strip lights.”
Zumba is not hip, and doesn’t pretend to
be, but it has become big business around the
world. It was created by Colombian dancer
and choreographer Alberto Perez, while teaching an aerobics class in his homeland in the
mid-90s. The story goes that Perez had forgotten his regular aerobics music and had to use a
tape of recorded Latin songs for the class he
was teaching; he threw in a couple of samba
moves here, a salsa swivel there and it was
such a hit that he renamed the lesson
“Rumbacise”. Word got out that a fun new class
had started and people began turning up in
droves.
By late 1999 Perez had moved to Miami,
Victoria Beckham’s doing
it, Natalie Portman,
Madonna and Shakira are
fans - not to mention
America’s First Lady.
Zumba is the exercise
craze dancing its way to
a nightclub near you
where he met investors Alberto Perlman and
Alberto Aghion, who saw its money-making
potential, and Zumba Fitness LLC was born.
More than a decade later their venture has
grown into a full-blown fitness phenomenon more than 10 million Americans take a Zumba
class each week, with 50,000 classes taking
place across 75 countries worldwide on a weekly basis. Perez has also launched a host of spinoffs - specialised classes for children
(Zumbatomic) and the over-50s (Zumba Gold),
clothing lines, DVDs and a Zumba Fitness Wii
game. Celebrity fans are a dime a dozen:
Victoria Beckham, Natalie Portman, Madonna
and Shakira are all said to be hip-shimmying
Zumba fans. Last year Michelle Obama incorporated it into her Get Moving campaign and a
mass Zumba class was taught on the White
House lawn at the launch.
The “get fit and have fun” ethos is the key
to the success of Zumba, says Millar. But it’s
also a business model that works. Instructors
operate as a franchise, paying for training sessions and CDs and using Zumba branding; the
only caveat is that 70% of the class must be
taught in the official Zumba style, and only 30%
is under the creative control of the instructor.
Millar and Walker aim to launch Zumba parties
in nightclubs in other towns and cities this year,
while also concentrating on children’s parties,
corporate events, hen parties and festivals.
Back at the club, I’m stumbling my way
through the hour-long class when I notice
something remarkable: everyone is looking
happy, as if we’re all slightly uncoordinated
extras in a pop-music video. The three instructors, including Millar, don’t shout instructions you just follow their steps as best you can. There
are two (male) live percussionists on the stage,
drumming enthusiastically, lost in the music,
which flits from samba and salsa, to bhangra
and African beats - even a touch of hip-hop. A
couple of belly dancers burst out from behind
the stage and dance into the crowd, adding to
the already surreal atmosphere. I now understand why fans tend to evangelise: as well as
getting fit (burning up to 1,000 calories per
hour), it really is fun.

Dum Maro team seeks Asha’s blessings
Juhi miffed with airline for damage to her tanpura
A SERIES of musical evenings entitled ‘Dum Maro Dum Nite’ are
being planned across Indian metros over the next two weeks and the
team wants singing legend Asha Bhosle to give the venture her blessings. Directed by Rohan Sippy, the film that also stars Abhishek
Bachchan, Bipasha Basu, Prateik and Rana Daggubati, will release
on April 22. Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star India who has co-produced
Dum Maro Dum, is guarded in disclosing plans visa-a-vis Asha
Bhosle. “All I can say is, we would be very happy and proud if she
gave us her thumbs up. At the moment I am not at a liberty to say
anything more. We’d like Ashaji to know that Dum maro dum is not
just a song for us, it is the heartbeat of our film. It’s our film’s title. Our
song and film are a homage to Ashaji and RD Burman,” said Singh.
BOLLYWOOD actress Juhi Chawla was left disappointed when she
was denied a chance to carry her tanpura (stringed music instrument)
as cabin baggage in a flight from Sydney to Melbourne recently. The
actress, who was in Australia to promote her forthcoming release I
Am, is taking music lessons these days and is quite devoted to it. So,
she wanted to keep the instrument safe with her, but the airline insisted on tagging it as fragile, and keeping it with the rest of the baggage,
said a source, but didn’t name the airline. Juhi agreed, but she was
upset to find a big hole in the instrument after the flight. “Juhi was
very attached to her tanpura and was very upset to see it damaged.
Nevertheless, she took it like a sport and continued with the promotion
bit,” added the source. Onir’s I Am will release in India on April 22.

AREENA Kapoor injures herself while
shooting in New Delhi for a high-octane
action scene for Agent Vinod. Kareena
Kapoor suffered a sprain in the neck
while shooting for beau Saif Ali Khan’s
Agent Vinod in Delhi. Sriram Raghavan directs the
film.
A unit source informs, “Bebo plays a role that has
grey shades and will be doing her own stunts for the
first time. She’s extremely excited and has toned her
body for it.
Yesterday she had to eject from a helicopter
using a harness and fire guns while at it. She fell
from the harness at some distance from the
ground, spraining her neck. She was in a lot of
pain and couldn’t get up.”
Luckily, there are two medical teams on the
sets 24X7 (Saif was shooting a chase scene on
another set a little distance away) and one was
immediately rushed to assist Bebo.
“When she resumed shooting, Kareena had
bruises but gamely continued shooting after
taking painkillers and injections. A concerned
Saif kept calling her every hour to check if she
was fine.”
After she completes this shoot, it’s back to
Mumbai to start work on Reema Kagti’s Aamir
starrer.
Says the actress, “I have not done this kind of
action before. I had a neck sprain as I had to do
a fall from the harness. I never thought I would
enjoy action but I am surprised how much I love it
here.
Peter, the action guy, makes things so easy. I am currently not on medication but ointments and painkillers and am
still shooting for Agent Vinod.”

OLLYWOOD, Kollywood, Tollywood. This
seems to be the order Tamannah is following. The actress, apart from Dhanush starrer Venghai, has no other films in Tamil
now. But she is extremely busy in Telugu.
“Since I am currently doing three films in Telugu,
I have not accepted any offer from Kollywood. I will
surely act in a Tamil film after completing my
Tollywood commitments,” she says.
Even before she made a mark in Tamil,
Tamannah was a popular actress in Andhra
Pradesh. “I love acting in south Indian movies,
especially Tamil and Telugu,” she says with a smile.
On Venghai, she says, “Director Hari is making the
film on fast track. He plans things well in advance
and executes them accordingly. Working with
Dhanush again (after Padikadhavan) is a delight.”
In 2005, Tamannah made her Telugu debut in
Sri, and in the following year she appeared in her
first Tamil film, Kedi. In 2007, she starred in two
college-life-based drama films, Happy Days in
Telugu and Kalloori in Tamil, which both earned
her critical acclaim.
Following
commercial
successes
with
Padikathavan (2009), Ayan (2009), Paiyaa
(2010) and Siruthai (2011), she established herself
as one of the leading contemporary actresses in
the Tamil film industry.

Lopez denies adoption rumours
ACTRESS Jennifer Lopez has dismissed reports that she plans
to adopt a child, saying she and her husband Marc Anthony
want biological kids. "No, no. That's not true," Lopez told
Britain's Fabulous magazine. The 41-year-old singer-actress
became a mother of twins - Max and Emme - in February
2008, and recent rumours suggested that both Lopez and
Anthony were looking to adopt a child, reports
femalefirst.co.uk. Lopez also said a brother or sister for her
twins was not likely to arrive any time soon. "I would like to
have another baby myself, actually. If it happens I'll be thrilled.
But we're not trying," she said.
SINGER Gwen Stefani says she can't compete with top quality
designers when it comes to her own fashion range because
she's not qualified. The No Doubt singer launched her clothing
line LAMB in 2004. Gwen admits she prefers designing casual
wear. "I just have a vibe of what I like and I have strong opinions about what I like and what is me," contactmusic.com quoted her as saying. "I'm not going to ever be a Vivienne Westwood
or a John Galliano. I'm trying to make clothes to wear every
day, that's what LAMB is. It's not a couture line."

P
ARIS Hilton, the woman who perfected
the art of being famous for being
famous, says she has met all of her professional goals. The heiress-turned-TV
star, who was in Mexico on Tuesday to
promote a new line of shoes, says she doesn't fear
being overshadowed by Kim Kardashian or any
other reality show rival with her own fragrance, Bmovies, sex tape and autobiography, all by age 30.
"There's so many people out there who try to imitate what I do but I am the original," Hilton said.
"There is nothing like me."
The socialite, who started her career as a model
and has tried her hand at movies, fashion and
singing, is currently shooting her latest reality TV
show, The World According to Paris, which will
debut this spring on the Oxygen cable channel.
"The show's everything about my life, showing
the business woman", Hilton said.
Before the media reported on Kardashian's every
move, Hilton was the favourite celebutante of the
tabloids, which covered every party she went to,
every man she dated and every brush she had with
the law.
Hilton angrily dismissed questions about
whether her life is superficial.
"I thought we were talking about the shoes," she
said.
Her shoe collection is the latest addition to a
lucrative empire that lends her name to 17 lines of
products from handbags and fragrances to clothing.
"I have done everything that I wanted to do and I
feel very blessed that I have been very successful on
every area," Hilton, wearing a long beige, sleeveless
dress in her Mexico City hotel suite.

"I think that I have the best style and I know
fashion," she added. "The girls all love my style.
When they buy my products they can be like me."
Her sense of fulfillment doesn't mean she's about
to retire. Hilton said she hopes the next phase of
her business career will be in real estate, with her
own chain of hotels, restaurants and nightclubs, a fitting path for the hotel heiress.
At a news conference in Mexico City
later, she matched a ruffled blouse and
dramatic oversized sun hat with a
pair of Champaign heels, one of her
new creations. Some of the other
pairs lined a table next to her.
Organisers initially refused to translate
when a reporter asked if she had
demanded the Swarovski crystal water
bottle at her side. But when journalists pressed for an answer, Hilton
quickly said she would be happy
to reply.
"I didn't order the water, I
think someone sent it as a
present," she said. "I'm not
a diva, I am not like that. I
can drink water out of
any bottle."
