TISSUE REVIEW - connective tissues • The following slides are from your text or other sources. This will allow you to study tissues at home. • You are also responsible for tissue slides that we view with the microscope in class. • Also study the tissue slides and pictures found in the PAL CD or at www.masteringaandp.com • know: – name of the tissue – the cells ; the matrix ; other structures – the function of the tissue – where it is found procedure to identify connective tissues • if it’s connective : • is the matrix loose or dense arrangement of fibers? – loose probably areolar – loose, with many cells reticular – large cells with nucleus at edge adipose – under epithelial tissue areolar – dense, parallel fibers dense regular (fibrous) – dense, dark, parallel “ (elastic) – dense, not parallel dense irregular c.t. • what are the cells called? • what function matches this structure? • other connective tissues: – chondrocytes in lacuna • smooth matrix • dark lines in matrix • cells in rows – osteons – blood cells cartilage hyaline cartilage elastic cartilage fibrocartilage compact bone blood areolar c.t. mast cell fibroblast areolar ct high power fibroblast Mast cell areolar c.t. elastic fibers collagen fiber areolar c.t. mast cell ground substance occupies the space between cells, fibers If it’s under epithelia, it’s probably areolar c.t. in low power, areolar looks like this. Adipose connective tissue Capillary Adipocyte This is not an empty space. The entire cytoplasm is filled with fats/lipids Nucleus adipose under the skin reticular c.t. dark fibers + many cells dense regular c.t.; found where? elastic c.t. elastin fibers always stain dark Dense fibrous irregular c.t. Collagen fibers not in a parallel arrangement Fibroblast nuclei Dense fibrous irregular connective tissue hyaline cartilage chondrocytes in lacuna hyaline cartilage if you see Chondrocytes in lacuna – it’s cartilage ; if the matrix is smooth – it’s hyaline cartilage hyaline cartilage elastic cartilage dark lines in the matrix = elastin Elastic Cartilage Elastic cartilage = cartilage with extra elastin fibers in the matrix. Elastin appears very dark. Chondrocyte in lacuna Elastic fibers Perichondrium Fibrocartilage = cartilage with extra collagen fibers in the matrix. The chondrocytes appear in striaight rows. Collagen fibers Fibrocartilage Chondrocytes in a lacunae We are built with several tissues in the same organ, area: dense irregular c.t. adipose c.t. gland
