Cantor’s Notes

In this past week’s Parsha – Pinchas – we are faced with
the concept of zealotry - a very serious and present danger for us
– not only in Israel, but now around the world.
In the previous week’s Parsha – Balak – we read that
Bila’am is prevented from cursing the Israelites by G-d. Instead,
Bila’am blesses the people three separate times - with one of them
being the blessing we say in every morning service:
Mah tovu ohalecha Ya-a-kov
How goodly are your tents Jacob
Bila’am tells Balak the way to destroy the Israelites is
from within their own camp.
In the words of Rabbi Rueven Mann: “What is amazing
is that their strategy presupposed belief in the truth of Torah,
particularly it’s teaching that G-d holds the Jews to account for
their sins. There are no greater transgressions than idolatry and
sexual licentiousness. The Midianites reasoned that, if Jews
could be lured into these behaviors, they would place themselves
at serious risk for Divine retribution. The plan was to use the
Torah as a weapon with which to slay the Jews.
“This is truly an astounding phenomenon that is contrary
to ordinary human psychology. Generally, if a person becomes
convinced of the truth of a religion, his desire is to observe it.
But these sinners acknowledged Hashem and His Torah and still
sought to subvert His will by instigating His people to rebel
against Him.
“This attitude reflects a unique type of evil never seen
again in history. It reinforces the warning that we must guard the
secrets of Torah, lest they fall into the wrong hands. Many
oppressors have arisen with the intention of forcing us to abandon
Judaism and to eliminate our religion from the world.
“These enemies never imagined that, by causing us to
sin, they could arouse G-d’s wrath against us. That would have

We begin August (can you believe that it’s already
August?) with a Torah Service on Saturday, August 6th, as the
Torah Study Group reads the final chapter and verses from
Bamidbar (Numbers). A lite Kiddush will follow. Please support
our outstanding Torah readers! The following Saturday, August
13th, at 10:00 , we will move our Torah Study to The Legacy
Willow Bend, 6101 Ohio Dr., Plano, Bldg B, 2nd Floor. This will
become a once a month event on the second Saturday (unless
otherwise announced). As many of you know, Hilda Pritsker has
taken up residence at The Legacy and she will greatly appreciate
our coming to her for Torah Study once a month!
Michael Bergel led a discussion on the impact of the
Holocaust during our Shabbat Service on Friday, July 15th. The
conversation centered on its impact on our current life. Michael
opened with a couple of slides describing the losses sustained not
only by Jewish communities but also the even greater numbers of
people lost during the war. This was a very interesting
discussion.
On Friday, July 29th, we held a movie night with the film
“Phoenix” being the feature. As part of the movie night we
incorporated a Pot Luck Dinner. Thank you to all for the great
food and all who came and enjoyed this very touching movie.
Plans are underway for the upcoming High Holidays.
They will be here before you know it! Rosh Hashanah begins on
October 2nd, and Yom Kippur on October 11th, this year. Please
mark your calendar!
Remember to support our Community Service activities (see page
9). We have added another opportunity to help our service people
around the world. It is Cell Phones For Soldiers. They accept
cellphones, tablets & MP3 players. Smartphones are preferred.
We have placed a collection box at Temple. The website is

Lazy Days!
Last month Brittni wrote “it’s too
hot to cook” and gave us two recipes to
cool us off. I will stay with the theme of
the “too hot to cook”, after all, August is
even hotter than July and this month we hit
the 100 degree mark. Most of us are back
from vacation and the ones with kids are
planning back to school activities. The kids
have already forgotten that they spent days
and nights on the roads, in hotels and outdoors. They are already starting with the
annoying sentence “Mom I’m bored”.
The recipes below are no bake
recipes; most importantly you can get the
kids involved and make it a fun cooking
experience.
No-Bake Coconut Lime Drops
INGREDIENTS
1 package vanilla cookies (such as Nilla
Wafers)
1⅓ cup powdered sugar, divided
2 teaspoons lime zest
⅓ cup fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons light corn syrup
¾ cup sweetened flaked coconut,
toasted
DIRECTIONS
1. Process the Nilla Wafers and 1 cup of
the powdered sugar in a food processor
until finely ground, 1 to 2 minutes. Add
lime zest, lime juice, and corn syrup,
and pulse until mixture just begins to
come together, 2 to 3 times. Add coconut, and pulse until mixture comes together completely.

No-Bake Cookies and Cream Bars
Inside this issue:
Anniversaries & Birthdays
Calendars
INGREDIENTS
¼ cup salted butter, melted
2½ cups finely crushed cream-filled
chocolate sandwich cookies (about 25
cookies)
16 ounces cream cheese, softened
7 ounces marshmallow cream (such as
Fluff or Jet-Puffed)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup coarsely crumbled cream-filled
chocolate sandwich cookies (about 7
cookies), plus more for garnish
DIRECTIONS
1. Put 25 cookies in a Ziploc bag and
crush cookies with rolling pin (this is
the kid’s favorite task). Stir together
the melted butter and crushed cookies
in a medium bowl. Line the bottom
and sides of a 9-inch square pan with
foil, leaving a 2-inch overhang on all
sides; lightly grease foil with cooking
spray. Press the cookie mixture into
the bottom of the prepared pan.
2. Beat the cream cheese, marshmallow
cream, and vanilla in a large bowl with
an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Gently fold in the coarsely crumbled cookies. Add the cream cheese mixture to
the pan, spreading it evenly over the
cookie crust. Cover and chill for at least
4 hours or up to 3 days. Lift mixture
from the pan using the foil overhang as
a handle, and cut into bars. Garnish
with more coarsely crumbled cookies, if
desired.
2. Shape dough into about 30 (1-inch)
balls. Place remaining ⅓ cup powdered
sugar in a shallow bowl; roll each ball in
powdered sugar until coated.
Serve
immediately, or store in an airtight container at room temperature for 4 to 5
days.
*** These cookies can be added later as
a snack or dessert to the kids’ lunch
box.

required that they acknowledge the
veracity of Torah, something they could
never bring themselves to do.
“As a result of their sin, the Jews
were smitten with a severe plague.
Hashem told Moshe to appoint judges and
execute justice against all who had
engaged in the idolatry of Baal Peor.
Only in this manner would the plague be
halted.
“But suddenly, the disaster took
on a new dimension. The Prince of the
tribe of Shimon joined in the sin when he
openly flaunted his affair with a beautiful
Midianite princess named Cozbi. Its one
thing when ordinary people transgress,
but quite another when great leaders
shamelessly violate the most sacred tenets
of Judaism.
“Pinchas did not hesitate. He
sprang into action, remembering the
teaching that, in public desecrations of
this kind, “zealots may deal with him.”
He entered the tent of cohabitation and
put a spear through both of them. As a
result of this great deed, the plague,
which had consumed 24,000 people, was
ended.
“Pinchas was a righteous
zealot…. In our time, the label “religious
zealot” has gotten a bad reputation.

Weekly Parshas
Matot
Numbers 30:2 – 32:42
Our double Torah portion begins
with rules regarding the binding nature of and the nullification of - vows, particularly
those made by women.
The Israelites successfully defeat
and slay the Midianites, including the five
kings of the region and Balaam, the
sorcerer. Nevertheless, the warriors are
chastised by Moses for sparing the
Midianite women with whom the Israelites
had recently engaged in idolatry and
promiscuity. The army is sent out again to
complete the mission. The spoils of war
are divided.
The tribes of Reuben and Gad and
half of Menasseh possessed large herds
and were desirous of settling on the
conquered lands on the eastern side of the
Jordan River. Permission is granted to
them - provided they participate in the
efforts to wrest the territory on the western
side of the Jordan from the Canaanites.
They agree and take a vow to this effect.
Masei
Numbers 33:1 - 36:13
The various locales in which the
Israelites encamped from the time of the
Exodus until their arrival at the plains of
Moab are enumerated.
Following an admonition to root
out idolatry in Canaan upon its conquest,
the land is divided by lot under the
supervision of Joshua, Elazar and the
leaders of the ten tribes whose peoples will
occupy the territory west of the Jordan
River.
Six Cities of Refuge are
established - three on each side of the
Jordan. These cities are to be given to the
Levites and will serve as a place of
sanctuary for anyone who has committed
murder accidentally. Vengeful relatives of
the deceased may not pursue these
individuals into the Cities of Refuge.
One additional refinement is
made to the laws of inheritance in order to
maintain the tribal integrity of real
property; in cases where daughters inherit
their fathers' property, the heiresses may
not marry men from other tribes.

Devarim
Deuteronomy 1:1 - 3:22
In a series of three lengthy and
final discourses that comprise the book of
Deuteronomy, Moses reviews Israelite
history from the time of the Exodus,
repeats and expands upon many of the
commandments, and admonishes the
people to remain faithful to God and His
Torah.
The Israelites left the area around
Mount Sinai with the objective of
conquering Canaan shortly thereafter. To
assist Moses in his manifold duties, judges
and other administrators were appointed.
Following the disheartening report of ten
of twelve spies sent into Canaan the people
refuse to embark on the conquest. In view
of this, God decrees that the generation of
the Exodus (with the exception of Joshua
and Caleb) will wander in the wilderness
for thirty-eight years until they die out;
their children will inhabit the Promised
Land.
The Israelites were enjoined from
attacking the Edomites (descendents of
Esau), and the Moabites and Canaanites
(descendents of Lot). They did, however,
defeat Sihon, the Amorite king, and Og,
the King of Bashan. Their lands were
divided between Reuben, Gad and half the
tribe of Menasseh, who settled on the
eastern side of the Jordan River.
Vaetchanan
Deuteronomy 3:23 - 7:11
The Sidra continues the address to
the people by Moses that began in last
week's portion. Moses recounts how God
denied his request to be allowed to enter
the land of Israel; Moses must view the
country from atop Mount Pisgah. He
pleads with the nation to adhere to God's
laws scrupulously - especially the laws
regarding idolatry. Failure to conform to
these laws will inevitably result in
expulsion from the land.
Moses apportions three cities on
the eastern side of the Jordan River to
serve as Cities of Refuge.
In an effort to stress the
importance of maintaining all the
commandments, Moses recalls how awestruck the people were at the time of the
Revelation when they assembled at the
foot of Mount Sinai to receive the Ten
Commandments.
A slightly altered
version of the Ten Commandments from
26 TAMMUZ - 27 AV 5776

the one found in the Book of Exodus is
restated.
The most prominent of our
prayers is found here: the first paragraph of
the Sh'ma, asserting the exclusive
relationship between God and Israel, and
Israel's duty to study and observe the
Torah at all times.
Future generations should be
trained, not only in the observance of the
Torah, but in the account of the
deliverance from Egypt. A strict warning
against intermarriage and idolatry is
issued. The special relationship between
God and Israel is stressed again: in love,
God redeemed the Israelites from slavery;
it is, therefore, their duty to observe the
commandments.
Eikev
Deuteronomy 7:12 - 11:25
In this continuation of Moses’
farewell messages, he reassures the
Israelites of God’s blessings as a reward
for observance of the commandments.
Similarly they will be led to victory over
the Canaanite inhabitants of the Land of
Israel if they remain faithful. Conquest of
the land must be followed by purging it of
all remnants of idolatrous practice.
Many were the lessons to be
learned from the Israelites’ forty-year
sojourn in the wilderness: they were tested
in terms of their loyalty to God’s
commandments, they had achieved a
measure of discipline through the
hardships they endured, and they learned
that God would see them through their
difficulties. Most importantly, they must
remember that their impending victory
over the Canaanites should not be viewed
as a sign of their virtue and piety - it was a
fulfillment of the promise made to their
ancestors.

Today, Islamic Jihadists react with
murderous anger at any perceived insult
to their “prophet” or religion. Anyone
who publishes an article or cartoon that
can be seen as disrespectful to Islam puts
his life in grave jeopardy.
“…Thus, it behooves us to ask,
what is so noble and different about the
action of Pinchas? The answer is that the
average person identifies with his religion
and its icons. If it is insulted, he takes it
as a severe personal affront. He may not
admit it, but it is his own anger which
motivates his need for revenge. This
person is generally a hateful and
disgruntled character, totally lacking in
human compassion. He is not acting for
the sake of noble ideals, but hides behind
them so he can unleash his great
subjective frustrations and resentments.
“Not so, the truly righteous
zealot. He must be a person on the
highest level of wisdom, love, and
compassion. The deed does not emanate
from his selfish, emotional disposition.
He acts only because of his great love of
Hashem and with complete absence of
rancor towards anyone, because he
recognizes the great harm caused by a
blatant desecration of G-d.
“He seeks the peace and
wellbeing of mankind….”
May G-d. send us such an
individual…one who will seek the peace
and wellbeing of all peoples in the world,
and not just their own.

Publicity
Your assistance is needed. A Publicity Committee is being formed to
help get the word out that Ner Tamid is one of the best kept secrets in the
Metroplex. We don’t want to be secret anymore. We need some ideas,
some writing and some placement to get the word out.
Please contact:
Randy Friedberg at [email protected]
if you can give us a couple of minutes of your time.
