Murphy struck my computer at an inopportune moment, just when most needed for the
newsletter. It was partly self inflicted as I was trying to free up some space on my hard drive
and get rid of some of those time wasting MSN’s and Ask and those things across the top one
never uses. My photographs were also taking too much space. Fortunately my son-in-law has a
I.T. shop in Gordons Bay and we finally got it all running A1.
Thanks Gerda for the bonnet-up picture, the flower girls in the gallery and the horse & cart.
Quite a lot of content in this issue and hope you like it!

THE CHAIRMAN’S BRIEF
Dear friends,
I trust you have your jerseys, jackets and blankets handy and your heaters ready to face this
winter. The “green season” is here and with it the splendour of the beautiful Cape. It is that
time of the year when we enjoy drives around the Peninsula particularly after a nice breakfast
or prior to a warm lunch. Such an instance was the drive and lunch at Snoekies, which is
always a winner. What an enjoyable gathering!
The 2015 AGM run successfully and smoothly with a large attendance and among great
camaraderie. After speeches, reports and prize giving we were treated to a display of cakes and
savouries. Since no nominations were submitted the existing Committee will remain
unchanged. A special mention was made for the excellent job done by the Committee members
who volunteer their time to make sure that the Club runs efficiently. Thank you once more to
the Morris “A Team”.
A very big and warm welcome to our new members: Saiyuree Sewchuran, Alan & Lyn Bradley
and Jasper Hoon.
On a not so happy note I must bring up again the subject of subs. A high percentage of subs
still remain unpaid in spite of numerous remainders. Bear in mind we are already in the month
of July. Regrettably those memberships will be cancelled and will no longer be entitled to
receive any correspondence or attend events.
And remember that any articles and photographs for the magazine, suggestions for events and
ideas for regalia are very much appreciated. Your own contribution is welcome.
Cheers and I hope to see you all during our next Club event.
Malcolm

PLEASED BE ADVISED; When you do an electronic transfer it is most important to give at
least your surname as a beneficiary reference other wise there is NO knowing where the money is
coming from; resultantly we may strike you off the list until it has been resolved. These are modern
times!? By the same token as we found out at the AGM, cheques are not even a consideration anymore
because they cost the club R25,00 which is plainly and simply a loss to the club!!! Cheques are history
and the Post Office has not too long to go. There are lots of forecasts in this regard as we know.

CHARLES WARE
We are sad to hear of the passing, on
Saturday afternoon, of Charles Ware.
Charles founded the Morris Minor
Centre, which bears his name, in
1976 and in 1991 went on to set up
the durable car company in Sri
Lanka which produces many of the
body and chassis repair panels which
make keeping a Morris Minor on the
road today and possible at an
attainable budget. It is in no small
part thanks to Charles’ v...ision and
business acumen in ensuring parts
availability for the future, as well as
the restoration and maintenance work carried out at the Morris Minor Centre, that there are so
many Morris Minors on the road today. Charles’ legacy will live on through the cars he has
played a part in keeping on the road, and our thoughts go to his friends and family at this
difficult time.

SOME
FORWARD
PLANNING
THE FOLLOWING:
20 September – British Car Run – “Amazing Race” Fun Run where anyone can win. Meet at the
clubhouse at 9.00 for a mystery destination. Particulars of the route will be divulged at different
points during the course of the run. A navigator is strongly recommended. Please put money
away for a 3 course buffet lunch at said destination @ R180 per person. This promises to be great
fun and the highlight of the events calendar. As the MMOC is the host club, as many as possible
Morris owners are requested to participate.
17 October - HAMLET KAROO KULTUURFEES @HAMLET. The usual festivities and we have been
invited to bring our Morries to join in with the other clubs. More details next issue.
15 November – Boot sale at the clubhouse in collaboration with the Early Ford Car club. Gates
will open at 8.00. Hot dogs for sale.
5
6 December – End of the year function, details to follow. As you will remember from last year
the committee hit on the right idea for an end of the year function in late November or very
early December to avoid this hype of OVER-PAYING for a Christmas party.

RECENT EVENTS
SNOEKIES
28th JUNE 2015
Gerda Muller
The first time, we, as a club, went
to Snoekies, was exactly 2 years
ago and that day was memorable
in more ways than one. Number
one is that we drove through on
of the worst storms ever, with
the water streaming down every
side street coming from the
mountain on the left, which
turned the road we were driving
on, into a river.
Secondly,
especially
seeing
that the
weather was so bad, it turned
out to be one of the best attended
events we’ve ever had in the time Frikkie and I have been members of the club. 29 people, 12 Morries,
1 Valiant and 1 Mini and a few plastics!
Needless to say, I was a bit worried this
time, but the weather turned out to be
fine. We had to meet at Bartholomew
Diaz Avenue in town – 13 Morries, 1
Mini, 1 Wolseley, a Cortina pick up and 4
plastics, and 30 members!
Seems like Snoekies is a winner, every
time. I’ve always been of the opinion that
whenever motor enthusiasts meet, it is
inevitable that they will get one or more
hoods open and the men will gather around it. It’s like Pavlov’s dogs…. ring the bell and the dogs will
start drooling. Open the hood, and the men will start drooling. This time it was Frikkie’s
Morris……don’t
really know what
was wrong, don’t
care,
doesn’t
matter, it’s just
one of those things
that men do that
women
don’t
understand….. a
man-thing

The food, as always, was a winner and after a while everybody had their orders taken care of and
settled down. Whilst standing in the queue, a
lady came up to me and asked about the
owner of a white Morris, because apparently
the Morris rolled backwards towards the
pavement. I told Andrew Riggs (who turned
out to be the only one there with a white
Morris) and he took care of it. It was only
when we started packing up to go, that the
same lady and her husband came up to our
table and asked who the chairman was. It
turned out to be our newest members Lynn
and Alan Bradley! Nobody realized they were
members – I hope we all succeeded in making them feel welcome to the Morris fold. So sorry that we
didn’t know earlier!

Quite intriguing to think that the MM started life with the code name
Mosquito which name was already taken by de Havilland for a twin engine (2
Spitfire engines) fighter/bomber and was of wooden construction to keep the
cabinet makers employed. Here we have a little wooden MM Fridge magnet.

Hello John
Your latest newsletter and the article about the Ford
inspired me to write this piece. As a country member
I always enjoy the newsletters, over and above the fact
that it is a pleasure to be a Morris Club member.
I found this gem here in Worcester after 30 odd years
in storage. We had to remove the vibracrete panels to
get it out of the storage place. This is a 1948 Fiat
Topolino Model B, the last of the old body shape with
the up-rated OHV 570 cc 16hp engine and mechanicals
that were used on the model C or Cub as it was known
from 1949 onwards. The car is fairly complete and
original but needs a full restoration. If any of our
members are “hiding” some Fiat Topolino parts,
please let me know.
Good show Gawie. Let’s hope we see it at the clubhouse in the

This car was more than
six years in development;
during and after the war.
What is quite fascinating/
intriguing and amazing
(at the time) is that this
sort of development was
indeed taking place. Even
if it looked like a
POACHED EGG.
WELL the first
English/thing car to sell
more than a million
“poached eggs” was the
Morris Minor!
