2012 Cruise – Bettin’ on a Good Time
Believe it or not, we have less than one month of winter left – at least according
to the calendar. Your Cruise Committee once again has readily accepted the
challenge of reinventing the annual summer mainstay event – the “Cruise”.
Your committee is pleased to present the 2012 Edition of the WPS Summer
Cruise -“Bettin’ on a Good Time,” a title befitting the week afloat theme - GAMBLING.
Whether you cruise by boat or by car (no extreme distances involved), either way
works - just as long as you “Cruise”, full week participation or day travel to a
single event, whatever works for your individual situation.
The charge of the committee is to encourage participation in this special week by
creating an itinerary with ports of call and activities that would appeal to both
boat and boatless members. We begin with the Commander’s Kick- Off Party
and Picnic at Lankford Bay Marina. What more can be said about this ever popular and well attended event that kicks off the summer season with always memorable food, beverage, and camaraderie. Attendees, for food planning purposes,
are requested to make reservations in advance (see Registration Form in this
Lubber’s Line issue for this and all other “Cruise” activities).
Careful consideration has been given to port selection, shore side activities, and
the availability of local lodging to not only entice, but to cater to our land traveling members. The western shore offers us as visitors not only panoramic water
overlooks and indescribably glorious sunsets, but an opportunity to experience
firsthand the distinctly different personalities of both Annapolis and Baltimore.
Seasoned WPS cruisers will quickly recognize the ports of call as having been
visited by any number of cruises past and yet are still worthy of one more trip.
Our week afloat is essentially as follows: Saturday – Lankford Bay Marina
(kick-off party), Sunday – Little Round Bay-Severn River anchor out, Monday –
Herrington Harbour South (shore side party and dinner on your own), Tuesday –
Harness Creek-South River anchor out, Wednesday – Port of Annapolis – theme
party (a little shore side gambling), Thursday – Magothy River anchor out, and
Friday – Harbor East Marina, Baltimore, Closing Ceremonies

COMMANDER’S
MESSAGE
By Cdr. James Robinson, AP
Winter, as of this writing, is quickly unfolding into spring. Just
last weekend we celebrated Founders’ Day. The annual Change
of Watch at the scenic North East River Yacht Club is close at
hand, 18 March 2012. (Reservation form in this issue.) Next
comes boat prep and those warm Chesapeake days.
Another WPS year, 2011-2012, draws to a close. This passing
Bridge year, our 73rd, was a rewarding one for me. In spite of advancing years, WPS years of course, we remain viable. Amazingly, we still seem to be an active group even as we approach the
start of our 74th year.
Our longevity and continuing success, like most enduring volunteer organizations, is solely attributable to a 70+ year long list of
dedicated and contributing members. This past year has been a
continuation of our proud tradition. We may deviate a little here
and there but still have generally been able to remain on course.
Our first get-together following Change of Watch was a reinstatement of the spring picnic. Memorable food, as usual, was
pleasantly coupled with a scenic backdrop, Rock Hall.
The 2011 annual cruise has been widely acknowledged as one of
the best yet thanks to the combined efforts of a diligent committee co-chaired by P/C Dave Sharpless, AP, and P/C Dennis Wallace, P. Our Assemblies Committee co-chaired by Lt. Betty Ingram, P, and Lt/C Judy Stadler, AP, once again put together an
incredibly interesting series of presentations.
The possibility of a name revision is still under evaluation. The
Executive Committee should be in a position to offer recommendations to membership in the near future.
This year we awarded Merit Marks to over 40 individuals in
recognition of their time and energies given to the squadron. It is
the combined contribution of these people that provides our
operating framework.

Education Department
WPS will have offered for the first time a truly custom
formatted sail-themed seminar on 26 February at the New
Castle Sailing Club facility in New Castle. The subject
perhaps is not as important here as is the presentation concept. We will have drawn upon the expertise of some of
our most dedicated and knowledgeable members* for the
sole purpose of crafting and presenting a theme-specific
type of program. Interested in attending one of these in
the future? Put us to work; the choice for customized
seminar subjects is up to you-let us know!
Our National organization is constantly making available new programs intended to improving the boating
experience. A list of these useful and informative topics (CDs) is available in the squadron Yearbook and on
the National website.
Once again we will be offering NASBLA approved Safe Boating Classes locally. Annual enrollments, in decline, are largely due to the number of potential attendees taking online non-proctored exams. The WPS Executive Committee still firmly believes that the subject matter is better served in the classroom environment
and will continue certification offerings.
Spring Certification Class schedules are as follows:
March 22, Thursday, 7:00 PM- Kennett Square Area, VFW Club
April 3, Tuesday, 7:00 PM-A.I. DuPont High School
April 19, Thursday, 7:00 PM-McKean High School
WPS, tentatively, is planning to man a booth on 5/18-5/20 at the West Marine facility in New Castle. More
info on this subject will become available via the WPS e-net as details firm.
Questions, suggestions, whatever? Please feel free to contact soon-to-be P/C Jim Robinson, AP at (610)-444
-5155 or P/C David Sharpless, AP at (302) 239-7995

*Thanks to Tom Stoner, Dennis Wallace, Tom Webster, Don Engler, John Ingram and the management of
the New Castle Sailing Club for making this happen

As Spring approaches, many of us are already thinking about commissioning, needed repairs, and other
things we have to do before the boating season begins. This warm winter really has made it seem like fair
weather for an outing on the water is just around the corner.
We had a great holiday party and some interesting winter assemblies. Still in the future is a sailing seminar,
planned for the last weekend in February, and the Change of Watch in mid-March, which will be at a new
location this year. The North East River Yacht Club is a new venue for us, and should be a great setting for
this event. We’re hoping you’ll consider joining in these activities.
Looking ahead to the boating season, the cruise committee has been busy, and details of this year’s cruise
are now available. Look for the day-to-day activities and sign-up information elsewhere in this newsletter
issue. And if you have ideas for other events on the water this summer, let us know!

2012 - 2013 Yearbook
It's the time for our yearbook to be assembled and printed.
(Need a personal data change) such as email, phone number, boat location,
etc. If you have any changes to your listing in the member roster section of
the yearbook please email your changes to Barbara Sharpless at: [email protected]
This is your last chance to make any changes! Do it now. The yearbook
is going to press.
(Continued from page 2)
Once again our squadron newsletter, The Lubber’s Line, was recognized for excellence. Many thanks to
our superb editor Pam Orris.
We have worked hard, we have played hard-a good good year! It has been my pleasure and privilege to
serve as your Commander and represent Wilmington Power Squadron at the District 5 functions this past
year. The squadron is in good shape. It can remain so with all of your continuing support.
In closing, thanks to a great group of outgoing Bridge Officers and Executive Committee members. A
very very special thanks from not only me but from all of our members to our Secretary Barbara Sharpless
for helping to keep our squadron waters smooth and navigable.
I wish all the best to the incoming Commander, Judy Stadler, AP, and her Bridge as we go forward into
our 74th year.
To each of you, thank you again for your support and as always best wishes for continued fair sailing going forward.
It has been a memorable voyage.

Baltimore Harbor Lighthouse/January WPS Assembly
In April, 2008, the U.S. government ‘disposed’ of the Baltimore
Light by offering it for sale in auction bidding. Since 1908, this
lighthouse has been a prominent landmark on the western shore of
the upper Chesapeake Bay. A private group of investors (4 couples) successfully won the bid to become owners of the lighthouse,
agreeing to restore the structure and preserve this landmark. At our
January Assembly, we were fortunate to hear from Ron Katz, one
of the new owners, about how this undertaking is progressing.
Ron Katz
BHL, LLC
The Baltimore Lighthouse is a three-story ‘cottage’ constructed on
top of a concrete and stone cast-iron caisson. Major repairs of the
upper structure will be required, and the new owners are using the
original schematics and drawings of the lighthouse as a guide for
restoration. Although the Coast Guard continues to have responsibility for the navigation light, the owners are required to maintain
the structure itself. They have completed some of the work, but
have a long list of tasks to be done in the ensuing years. Funraising efforts are also underway. In the meantime, they are enjoying
the use of the building, and are especially excited about the awesome views from the middle of the bay.
Plans for the near future involve developing dockage at the base of
the light, so that visitors may tour the structure. If you missed our assembly or are further interested in the
Baltimore Light, check out the website at www.BaltimoreLight.org. The website provides a history and
photos of the restoration projects.

WPS Annual Meeting and Founders’ Day Social
The 73rd Founders’ Day Social was held at the Brandywine Community Center on 17 February 2012. Seventy-five attendees enjoyed a delightful dinner of pizza and salad with brownies for dessert. Following the
dinner course, Lt Don Engler, P, and Sue Engler, P, after introducing their guests for the evening, presented
a very entertaining slide show of their cruise to the Bahamas during the winter of 2010-2011. (Please see
the article written by Don and Sue on “Living the Dream” located in this issue.)
At the conclusion of the entertainment portion of the evening, the annual meeting was called to order by
Commander James Robinson, AP. F/Lt Carl Stacey, AP, led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to
the Flag. New members Kim Miller-Royal, P, and Michael Royal, P, were recognized as well as John and
Heloise Osborn, guests of member Bert Willett, AP. P/C Donna Zimmerman, JN, Nominating Committee
Chairperson, was asked to present the Slate of Officers for the coming Bridge year which was subsequently
approved by members present. Tom Stoner, AP, was presented the silver cup for winning the 2011 cruise
racing series while the Harwin Smith Navigator’s Trophy went to Lt Tom Webster, SN. Commander Robinson presented a 25 year membership pin to P/C Jeffrey Russell, AP.
P/C David Sharpless, AP, was asked to give some highlights of the upcoming 2012 Annual Summer Cruise.
He commented that the itinerary is set up for both cruisers and non-cruisers, and encouraged participation
from our shore-traveling members. Lt/C Barbara Sharpless, P, Chairperson of the 2012 Change of Watch
Committee, reminded members to get their reservation forms in for the festivities on 18 March at the North
East River Yacht Club. Commander Robinson commented that P/C Sharpless is continuing research on the
name change.
Prior to adjourning the meeting for the evening, Commander Robinson was enthusiastically thanked for all
his efforts during the 2011-2012 Bridge year. The Assemblies Committee led by Co-Chairs Lt Betty Ingram, P, and Lt/C Judith Stadler, AP, was recognized and thanked for putting the evening together.

Finally, all members - new cruisers, old cruisers, potential auto cruisers - are encouraged to participate in
all or any part (event) of our week afloat. Our gambling theme will be visible in most everything we do
this week. A yet to be designed theme commemorative “T” shirt will be available.
The Registration Form (deadline adherence requested) appears in this Lubber’s Line issue. Need more details, interested in local lodging options, personal timetable conflict, general questions – whatever? Don’t
give up just yet! Contact the undersigned or any committee member. The Cruise Committee is committed
to do anything we can to bring a little WPS “Bettin’ and Cruisin” into your life!!!
Please try and join us.

Living the Dream; Founders Day Presentation
Don & Sue Engler
If you missed Don & Sue’s show on Friday 17 February 2012 — well you can ask anyone that attended,
about 75 persons, how they enjoyed it. Since I am writing this piece for the Lubber’s Line, I can’t lie, it was
well attended and I hope well liked. We began that evening by talking a little about:

Why we went...We felt our health was good and perhaps would not get any better. Our nations’ economy, and our business were at a point where leaving wouldn’t alter a lot in the next 8 months. We wanted
to escape the ungodly amount of snow that was going to be dumped on the Phila/Wilm areas.

Where we went and why there...A short sail (135+miles overnight) to get into the aqua waters of the Bahamas and warm temps (Nassau to clear customs). Lots of small islands to explore and meet other cruisers. Warmest temps anywhere in the Bahamas are in the Exumas, specifically George Town, with protected areas to anchor. GT has had a reputation for being a large meeting place for cruisers and fun
things to do. Regatta competition happens during the last week in February and continues for 2 weeks.
We visited Long Island in March. Long Island is split by the Tropic of Cancer on its’ northern section
and is particularly noted for its caves. Dean’s Blue Hole is the world’s deepest underwater sinkhole
dropping to the depth of 660’. Long has a population of roughly 4,000 inhabitants and is known as the
most scenic island in the Bahamas.

What did we miss? Our children and grandchildren, our church, our friends, dining out, our comfortable
bed, and ice. We sacrificed these comforts but our lives were enriched by the many friends we met on
the way.
This presentation involved four sections that appeared on the screen as a
menu driven DVD. Introductions of
honored guests attending, Nuts and
Bolts (what worked & what didn’t),
Our Experiences (just our three favorite ones) and the show. The Living the Dream Show was reduced
from over 450 images to the present
260, 6 videos, 12 of our favorite
songs, and lots of dissolves and transitions to add to the appeal. The
sound was transmitted by the
Engler’s JBL Eon speaker and appeared to be on the louder than normal volume some of the time, but
some of the music sounded better
louder. Sue tells us that they have
been asked to do this same show for their church family.
Could I have the lights off please…
